Genre: Fantasy

Rating: 2.4/5

Publishers Description: When Rowan Middlebrook left Secret Hallow for college, she swore she would never return home. It’s not that she doesn’t like her hometown. It’s just kinda weird there, what with the eternal autumn thing, the hauntings, and…oh yeah, all the witchcraft.

Review: I am on the fence with this one. Most of the novel was complete drivel. Rowan, our reluctant hottie hero, lacked depth as did all her cohorts. The storyline was rushed, and where a mystery could have easily been inserted, in its place was a mundane love triangle and a dying tree. Epithets or exclamations were adolescent outbursts that sought to bring a “witchy” vibe to the dialogue. “Oh cauldron/goblins”, “Oh my pumpkins!” and “Oh, dragon eggs” were a few unmemorable moments.

The idea that a college girl that has been gone for 6 years has no contact with her world traveling parents is ridiculous. If you’re estranged, then yes but she gets all her info about her parents from her Grandma. Rowan constantly is sniffing out the musky sweat scent of men while denying her birthright yet fights for her place as the leader of the coven. Huh?

Despite all the negatives, this was well written. The writer has talent yet trended the novels as a serialization rather than putting in real effort to make a substantive novel. Insert a mystery, create some character depth through movement and quite possibly you have a winner.

Definitely not what I expected

If you look at the actual title of the book, it includes the line 'a romantic paranormal mystery'.....

Um, no. That description is a complete and epic fail.

In what world was that book a mystery? It was a poorly written book about witches and had a shabby plot thrown in with snooze worthy 'romance'... if you can even call it that.

It was just undeniably disappointing.

I received a free copy of this book for my honest review. It was a cute, quick read. The two problems I had with it were (1) Part of the title says it's a mystery romance..where is the mystery? (2) it needed to be longer. I don't think I've ever said that about a book but in thus instance there just wasn't enough information. I'll give you an example at one point she's says her family thinks she's going to help the Elder a Tree but she has no plans of doing anything. Next chapter she's driving there talking about how she wished she had already started working on it and telling the guy in charge he can leave cause she's there now. What changed? A conversation? A thought? Give us something.

Not the book for me

I read the whole thing. It seemed rushed and some of the plot not needed. I guess if your looking for a quick read it is good for that. Just not my favorite.

Coming home comes with heartache

A good read. Great mix of characters which should become better the more we get to know them.
Coming home is both distressing and delight. Distressing because she is so very tempted to use her magic and a delight to see her family and friends. But the news isn't good, the Elder Tree is in trouble in fact it is close to dying. Also she had to break off her relationship with Garrett to come home even if it was for a short visit. After all he had no magic and she was the strongest earth witch for some time. However using her magic may have unwanted consequences so that was out of the question. Add a visiting warlock who seems hell bent on getting together with her, Garrett finding her, her best friend and her elemental daughter and the destruction of the Elder Tree. Can the tree be saved? Can she find happiness?

We all run away from our families at one time or another. For Rowan Middlebrook; whose parents are on their own adventures, it was up to her to go help her grandmother in Elder Grove, OR. A family of witches had trouble in their coven. A strange warlock was trying to cut Rowan out of her coven heritage and seemed to have everyone under a spell.

Will Rowan wake up from her fear and do what she needs to? Will she save the coven? Will she get over a recent break-up?

I really enjoyed this book, the witches were interesting. Rowan moved away from home and left witchcraft behind. Now, at the behest of her grandma, she is back but determined not to use magic and make it a short stay. Each witch has their own speciality and makes this book unique. Looking forward to reading the next one,

Rowan a witch returns to her village after college. She is afraid of her powers and won’t use them. I gave the book only 3 stars because although it was light reading I really didn’t think it had enough content. I didn’t feel any urgency to heal the Elder Tree. I also didn’t find any real conflict in the book. A pleasant book but not great.

Flat characters

It was a fun read, but the characters were rather flat. There were quite a few typos that editing could help.

Rowan has returned to Secret Hallow, a town she left years ago and swore never to return to, at her grandmother’s request, to help save the Elder Tree. If the Elder Tree dies, there will be no more magic in Secret Hallow. Rowan’s witch family has lived there, a community coven, for generations. Her parents have cared for the community for years but are now on an extended trip to see the world beyond their small community. Almost upon returning, Rowan meets Caedmon McFarland, a warlock who thinks he can take over the coven by marrying Rowan, though she does not want to marry him and though they have never met before. Though advertised as a paranormal mystery, this is not really much of a mystery here. In fact, there is not even much of a romance. Caedmon tries unsuccessfully to get Rowan interested in him, while, all the time, he is really interested in another witch in the coven, who has rejected him. There is little chemistry between any of the characters as the story unfolds. In fact, I really found most of the characters were underdeveloped. This is not the genre of book I normally read. It is a paranormal story and involves witches, which I enjoy, but I prefer a book with a much lighter tone than this one has. I am just too grounded in reality to read, enjoy and believe all the stuff the book presents about a “hidden” community no one can easily find, a community that remains in the autumn timeframe, a community with all the things we normally attribute to witches everywhere all the time, etc. The story is interesting, but a bit far-fetched for me. I also thought that the author went a bit too far , every now and then, inserting comments by a little girl witch and other characters that we might associate with witches and covens and magic to lend an aura of paranormal witch-like magic to the book. The story is not very long, and moved along almost too rushed to suit me. I felt there was little time for any real development of characters or story line. This is a book for the reader who really enjoys reading about paranormal witches will enjoy or for someone who is looking for something a bit different. The book did show promise, however. The author can write fairly well and can develop a loosely woven plot, but the story still needs work, in my opinion. I received this from NetGalley to read and provide an honest review.

Rowan is a witch, although you wouldn’t know it. She hates to use her magic and has abandoned the place that she grew up in, ‘Secret Hallow’, because she doesn’t like to use her craft.

When Rowan is called back to the village by her grandmother, who needs her help to save the Elder Tree, and to stop ‘Secret Hallow’ from losing it’s magic, Rowan feels like she has no option but to return.

What her grandmother wasn’t expecting though, was Rowan to try to help in a non-magical way. Can she save them all without having to resort to using the one thing she hates about herself?

I love a bit of witchcraft (I don’t know if you could tell by the logo for the blog!), so I was intrigued and excited to get my teeth into this book.

The story though wasn’t exactly what I was expecting. I was expecting action, magical moments, bad guys, a fight to save the tree. What we actually get is a sweet story about a witch trying her best to help her ageing grandmother.

I also expected the Elder Tree to have a bigger part in the story, seeing as though that was the reason that she returned home, but the tree plays a secondary role to Rowan herself.

The book mainly is about Rowan, well, just being Rowan and getting on with her life. Meeting her friends and family and failing to use her magic, even when it is needed. There is however a bit of a love story to the book too, as well as a non-starter love triangle (all one-sided on the warlocks behalf).

The book reads very easily and much like a YA book (that’s why I’ve put it in the YA category as well). The story is lovely, but I was really hoping for a bit more oomph and depth to it.

There was one bit about the book that really narked me though. Rowan’s grandmother never called her by her name. She called ‘grand-daughter’ every time she spoke to her. Now I don’t know about you, but my grandparents have always called me by my name, not ‘grand-daughter’ when speaking to me.

It is an interesting, fun book, but I think this would suit someone around 12-15, more than an adult.

I can see myself getting into this series but I did find this first installment a bit difficult. It was initially tricky to sort out the various magical abilities. Much like any fantasy series there were new terms and new characters that don’t only relate to each other but have additional powers that you need to keep straight.

I wish the novel had been longer because there were a number of members whom I felt didn’t get enough background information for me to feel their link to Rowan. Though Rowan was well described and you got a good understanding for her, there were the Ash sisters for example that I was a bit confused about. Are they Rowan’s sisters? They seemed to behave as if they were but they didn’t have much link to her within the novel?

I was also confused by Rowan’s relationship with Orianna- we were given the impression that they were really close but they hadn’t communicated in the four years Rowan left to go to college outside of the village? That was tricky for me because the female characters should have an established bond which I didn’t feel until the end of this novel. I was also taken aback by the assumption that Rowan should marry a complete stranger to save the village- he was in himself a bizarre character- his personality flip-flopped from completely unpleasant to mildly endearing but I loved Garrett immensely- I think if you don’t then you must have missed something. He seemed like he could be Rowan’s dream man.

Overall I found the novel interesting but felt something was missing to make me fall in love. I would likely read the next one in the series (should it be offered) though as I’m curious about what happens next. I think it could have used more time and more in depth setting of the scene to really get my attention.

This is a cute story, I really enjoyed it! This is a story about acceptance, how we must accept who we are in order to truly be happy. Rowan has become a reluctant witch. She is very powerful, and has become afraid of her magical abilities. Rowan does the only thing she can think of, run away. She soon finds that running from her problems isn't going to solve anything when she is called home to help save the Elder Tree.

With the help of young witch, who is also quite powerful, Rowan begins to slowly realize things about herself. She has the help of her grandmother and friends to help on her journey of self discovery and love.

This is a charming tale that will keep you interested and wanting to read more. The story is fast paced and moves along swiftly. The characters are entertaining, and enjoyable.

My only concern is this story is labled as a mystery, there was no mystery so this will be misleading for some readers. There were a few things that might have been more developed such as why Rowan's parents, the leaders of the coven, were traveling so much and why they didn't come back home to check on things. The idea was touched upon but could have been further developed. I'm also curious why there was not a second in command that could have helped run the coven. Perhaps, these will be answer in subsequent books?

Overall, I really enjoyed the story and am curious to know what will happen next. I'm looking forward to reading other books in this series.

I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

This book was filled with a really fun mix of interesting characters. There are witches of all different types thrown into a single magical town.

Rowan left the magical town of Secret Hallow years ago to pursue her dreams of living a normal life and going to college. Her parents, the absentee leaders of their magical town, are away on holiday, leaving the town to flounder about when the source of their magic (the Elder Tree) suffers. In a moment of desperation, Rowan decides to face her “demons” and head back to her childhood home. Because she couldn’t really carry on a relationship with a “normal” anymore, she broke up with her longtime boyfriend, Garrett, and headed home to try to fix the tree.

Nothing is really the way she left it, and while Rowan is determined not to stay, it still makes her incredibly angry that an arrogant man has swooped into her town and tried to save the tree without her. These two face off constantly, which leads to a horrible work environment for the both of them. Luckily, fate steps in (in the form of meddling parents and friends) to set them both back on the path they should never have left. This book was somewhere between a fantasy read and a romance, leaning more towards the fantasy/adventure aspects of the story.

Rowan was greeted by Nana, Enid, and Gemma Ash on returning to Secret Hollow. Rowan and the whole village were witches Rowan had broken up with her long time boyfriend Garrett so she felt she didn't have to impress anyone she met.Rowan only plans on staying at home one week before leaving again to return to graduate school. There is a new warlock in town Caedman McFarland and he thinks he is going to take over the coven by marrying Rowan even though they have never met.
I like this story a lot. It was a light read but enjoyable imagine a place where everyone gets along. I liked that. I like how Rowan learns to enjoy being a witch again. Although why would her parents leave her grandma without making sure she had help first. Anyway I liked the characters also especially Rowan and all the ins and outs she went through to be who she is suppose to be. I recommend

Great Book!
This is a great book; this is the first book in The Witches of Secret Hallow series by Nora Lee. Rowan Middlebrook left Secret Hallow for college, and said she would never return home. She believes that her magic is too dangerous for her to control. When Nana Winterblossom asks Rowan to help save the Elder Tree she has no choice but to help. Rowan meets a new warlock, Caedmon McFarland in Secret Hallow who has an arranged marriage to Rowan. If you are looking for a great book then you need to read this book. I am looking forward to reading the next book in this series.

Love the Witch, Hate the Craft by Nora Lee is the first book in the Witches of Secret Hallow. I really enjoyed this book, and surprised how the book developed.

Rowen is reluctantly returning home to Secret Hallow, town of witches, to help save the Tree of Life, which is the coven's tree. Rowen is determined not to use her powers, but she can see how her home town is hurting.

This book is full of emotion, which I found different from typical cozy witch books. There is no violence, death or evil in this book, and the coven all gets along. If you want a light read full of secrets and surprises, you will enjoy this book.

This is a lovely new series that portrays witches and their covens the way you imagined as a child. A new series set in Secret Hallow that has the coven's tree of life dying. Rowen is returning home after being away at college, reluctantly. She never wanted her magical powers and resisted using them until she sees what is happening at home. Readers from young adult to elderly will enjoy this story, it's refreshing with no terrible evil, death or violence. Will look forward to the entire series.

I received an ARC of this book from NetGalley for an honest review. I enjoyed this book. It is easy to relate to Rowan's fear of being taken over by her magic. Her need to protect her Nana and the coven - along with all it's interesting members overpowers this fear. It was refreshing to find out her longtime boyfriend, Garrett, always knew she was "different" and loves her all the more for it. I look forward to reading the next installment in this series.

A fairly quick read. I found the book very light reading and I liked Rowan as a character. I was routing for her the whole way. I hated the romantic plot lines as these felt phoney and they almost made me stop reading, but I am glad I persevered. The ending was sudden like the author was desperate to finish the book. I don't know if I would read the second in the series. I'll see how compelling the description is.

Sweet love story written with a new twist. I like how the story is about witches but not about them casting spells to make things happen. Their town seems like such a lovely place to be. And I loved how the town members all supported each other. Will read the next book in the series. Given a free copy by NetGalley.com for an honest review.

Yawn

I did not care for this book. The characters were hard to connect with, and to be honest it was very hard for me to finish. This just wasn't my cup of tea. If you like typical romance novels this might be your thing. Typical internal struggle solved with love and all the other mushy stuff.

I received a copy of this book for free from NetGalley. This was a really cute and fun read. While there wasn't much substance to the story, all the quirky characters made up for that. Rowan is amazing and I hope to see her in other books. It felt like the ending was rushed but I definitely want to read more.
