Concordia Wells #4

Unseemly Haste

Murder aboard the Overland Limited…
It is the summer of 1898. Professor Concordia Wells is eager to accompany her friend, Pinkerton detective Penelope Hamilton, on a cross-country train trip to San Francisco. Breathless vistas and exciting locales will be a welcome change from a fiancé impatient to set a wedding date and the threat of revenge from the remaining Inner Circle members back in Hartford.
But Concordia should know there is no such thing as a free ride. When the Pinkerton Agency switches assignments at the last minute, she and Miss Hamilton have their work cut out for them. Fellow passengers prove to be both help and hindrance: a lady reporter in hiding, a con man…and a corpse or two. Then there is the handsome gentleman with the dark hair, green eyes, and a secret agenda of his own. Good thing Concordia is an engaged lady. Or is it?

historical mystery. Concordia Wells is a college professor at a ladies college. She is in love and want to marry, but married women in her class do not work out side the home. She does not want to give up her career. She is also close friends with the lady Pinkerton detective. She also has a knack of being in the wrong place at the wrong time.
It seems odd to me as I always worked. I never really considered becoming a housewife. Couldn't have afforded to anyway. Also in the back of my mind I think in the poorer classes women have always contributed to the household income. Also when you think about it when men are sent off to war who ran the farm, and the shops, and the castle? Makes you think.

sort of complicated

and how is it Concordia's always intimately involved before the fact even? lots of loose ends to bring together, almost too many. good mystery, good solution. perhaps i just need a rest from reading so much?

These books continue to be a delight - very fun to read and I am very curious to see how Concordia navigates her new decisions about how she wants to balance her duties as a wife with her passions as a teacher!

Stopped reading at Chapter 14. The main characters, who in previous books behaved more or less intelligently, have been reduced to idiots and I can't stand to keep reading.

It's disgusting the way Owens has betrayed her characters.

I LOVE Mysteries! It is my favorite genre by far. This is the first book I have read by Mrs. Owens. I wasn't sure what to expect of this book when it was given to me but the book grabbed my attention from the beginning. This book was definitely not a disappointment. I enjoyed it so much I completed it in two afternoons. The book is extremely well written with enough plot twist to keep you guessing until the end. The main character Concordia was a delight. I can't wait to read the next one. Without a doubt, Mrs. Owen and her Concordia Wells Mystery series will be added to my TBR list. I would definitely recommend this book and author!

For the sake of full disclosure, I am also a misterio press author. I've read several of Owen's books in this series, and so far this is my favorite. I enjoyed having the mystery set on a cross-country train ride in 1898. The way card sharps and criminals would ride the rails to ply their arts because they could get on and off, alluding the law, fascinated me. The movement of the train from state to state complicates the plot in a believable manner, while Owen provides colorful historical details of a ride from New York to San Francisco.

Disappointed. This one was so drawn out by the train trip west, and then wrapped up in a few short chapters. The romantic interest starting to build was dashed aside too easily, and the wrap up too neat. I would have liked more detail about the acrobatic troop-- like why they were necessary for the plot, and of course to learn more of the copy from Reno. I don't like neatly wrapped packages and this one was. Too bad as I found her other novels very fun and satisfying.
