Peer Pressure
Katie’s nervous because at school it’ll be announced who’ll get to be in the Winter Olympics. Katie is trying out for synchronized skating and is one of the four finalists. Katie is picked but so is Stacey. Katie didn’t hear them announce her partner is Laurel Spencer (one of Stacey’s BFFs). Laurel used to be Katie’s best friend’s (best friend) before she moved to Cali.

Sabrina shares some good news. She’s made the band and she’s first clarinet. Randy says she also made the band as a precaution. Now they’ll all be in the Winter Carnival. Allison also says she’s one of the reporters for the Carnival (even though she’s a little nervous about talking to people). Katie worries that she won’t be able to skate in sync with Laurel because they’re so different. Laurel shaes her up a little bit by questioning her abilities. She gives her the chance to tell the Coach. But Katie is determined to show her she’s just as good as Laurel is. Stacey of course has to throw in her put-downs.

After school, they run into Stacey and Laurel and find out they’re trying to get switched to be each other’s partners. Randy tells them this can only work to their advantage. Katie really doesn’t know anything about Kim but figures she’ll probably be easier to work with. Emily announces at home, she’s been chosen to be the Winter Carnival Queen for the seniors. Katie’s mom tells them both she’s proud of them.

The next day there’s a practice held at the indoor rink. Katie notices Laurel’s moves are stiff and Stacey’s are overdone. The Coach doesn’t switch partners and Laurel makes practice difficult The Coach tells them the key is to trust each other. He says to meet with their partner before the next practice and the next practice they should agree on music. Katie agrees to meet Laurel the next day. Laurel introduces Katie to her mother (whose dismissive and distant) and her sister Laurel (whose a dancer and says she won the figure skating contest when she went to Bradley). Katie thinks she is snobbish. Laurel suggests a jazz song called “Breezes Blowing”. Katie loves the song but they listen to some others. But Katie likes the first one the best.

Laurel starts to say something about how her sister used the song last year and you’d think she’d hate it but she trails off. She shows Katie the skating outfit she has in mind. It’s nice but Katie knows she doesn’t have the money for it. Katie sees that when they have a snack, Mrs. Spencer hardly listens to Laurel and pays more attention to her sister (Lana), (She hardly listens to Laurel ask if she sees a costume for there routine because she’s so concerned with getting Lana a costume for a dance audition). Laurel invites Katie to come over to her house to work on the routine. So, the go to the Spenders. Katie notices Lana doesn’t even ask them about the routine. Katie and Laurel bond over how they feel second rate compared to their sisters.

Sabrina signs everyone up for the decorating committee. Sabs invites Katie to go to the mall but she’s already made plans with Laurel to pick out their costumes. So they try to make plans for another day but Sabrina has band practice. She just says she’ll go with Al and Randy. Sabrina calls Randy and complains about Katie and Randy points out she didn’t really ask her. Then Sab tells her about Katie going shopping with Laurel and says she’s worried she’ll turn back to Stacey’s group. Then Randy calls Allison and repeats what Sab said. Allison says they’re probably just spending a lot of time together so they can win the competition.

When the GT crew meets up, Sab and Randy worry that they’ll never sound like a band. The next practice tho, with Laurel goes next better. Stacey’s flashy techniques don’t cover up the fact that she really doesn’t have any skill. Laurel and Katie get applause by the boys hockey team. Stacey gets mad and walks out. The Coach says Bradley can’t afford costumes and they need to pick out their own outfits. He tells them they all did 100 percent better. There won’t be a rehearsal the next day. Allison shows up and says she’s there to do interviews. Stacey tries to give Katie a hard time after practice, but to her surprise Laurel defends her.

So, they all bring it up at lunch. But Katie says just because she’s spending time with Laurel that doesn’t mean she’s letting them go. Katie suggests that Laurel come over to help her and the rest with the decorations (after they go to the mall) and she’s ok with it. Laurel and Katie go in an expensive store but surprisingly Laurel says she doesn’t see anything she likes and then kinda reads Katie’s mind that it doesn’t make any sense to pay 75.00 for something she’s only gonna wear once. Laurel confesses that she didn’t think it would work out but even Stacey’s ok with her partner and told Laurel she’ll probably have a better chance winning with Kim. Katie is shocked but Laurel just says that’s just how Stacey is. They decide on simple pink leotards with pink and yellow skirts.

They run into Stacey, BZ, and Eva and they all go hang out at a hamburger place. Katie realizes how much she’s outgrown their group. After they pick out some things (ribbons, sequins, rhinestones,) to decorate and make their own barrettes. Randy, Allison, Sabrina, Katie, and Laurel all start working on the theme for the Carnival “The Winter Sky”. Sabrina says she has good news. She overheard the Coach talking and he said that she and Laurel have a good chance of winning but the other team one girl tries to do her own thing. Then Randy makes a snarky comment and it gets awkward because they forget Laurel is there and she says she’d better leave.

They make up the next day. They both apologize for their friends and stay they didn’t mean anything by it (Stacey made a comment when they were at the burger place about Allison who interviewe them. It was about her being shy). Kim and Stacey get worse, Laurel and Katie practice like crazy and get better. Emily even surprises them with matching pink tights. Allison interview comes out and it’s amazing! There’s this gorgeous picture of Laurel and Katie.

The band gets a standing ovation at the Carnival. Even though there’s some tough competition to no surprise of anyone reading this Katie and Laurel win! They invite Laurel but she turns it down to be with Stacey because she’s furious. They agree to still be friends.

My Thoughts:
This really reminded me of the Jem episode, I think it was called “The Bands Break Up.” In the episode, Kimber and Stormer find themselves on the outs with their groups and end up in a club together. The crowd urges them to play and reluctantly they do but find out they’re a good fit. I think someone gets them to record an album, but I wanna say it’s a shady deal. Then Jem and the Holograms help them put out the album and make it a success. In the end, Kimber invites Stormer to (be a Hologram?) but then the Misfits are pleading her to come back to them. So she tells Kimber they don’t really need her (the Holograms) but they (the Misfits0 do. They hug and say something like “Friends.” And one says “Always.” Then you hear their song “I’m Ok.” Like I said in the last book, again in this one it shows that just because one of em got involved with the Winter Carnival they ALL got involved. And AGAIN it shows how one of them (Sabrina) makes a decision for the others and even though Katie had enough on her plate no one EVER has the courage to say NO I CANT DO IT or NO I just DON’T WANT to. JUST SAD the lack of individuality.

Rating: 5
There was a good message in it about how you never really know what someone’s life is like by just looking at it from the outside.

I love how the author tells us that Katie “taught herself” figure skating by watching clips on TV. Uh-huh, sure she did. Also, Sabrina is still the worst. Here she is “accidentally” catty about Stacey in front of one of the girl’s best friends. And how is Sabrina any different than the MGs in this series?
