Unlucky in Love

Rate this book
After Alexis Maguire’s wedding day comes and goes without a groom, she decides that it’s time for a change. Tired of being the dependable, steady—and apparently boring—one, Alexis hopes that a cross-country road trip will help her loosen up and find her inner sparkle. Her first stop is the Whisper Creek Ranch, where the hot wranglers are sure to bring out her inner party girl. The trouble is, she can’t stand pretending to be someone she’s not—especially around the cowboy who tempts her to stay put.

Gunnar Peterson has spent six months working at Whisper Creek, and he’s never been happier. Having grown up an army brat, he’s ready to put down roots, and the only thing missing is a woman to share his life with. When Alexis blows into town, Gunnar thinks he may have met his match, despite the wild-child facade he sees right through. But Alexis swears she won’t settle down anytime soon—so it’s up to Gunnar to convince her that what she’s looking for . . . is right here.

3.5 Breaking the curse Stars

Unlucky in Love the 4th book in the Whisper Creek Series was a sweet read. It can be read as a stand alone as I didn't read any of the others and I had no problems. Although I liked the secondary characters so much I kinda wanna go back and read their stories too. This was a clean romance for my friends that don't like the sexy time. But just because this is a clean read didn't mean it was lacking in romance. Lexi and Gunnar had a connection that was coming through the pages strong. I loved Gunnar. He was just so charming. There was just something special about him. I liked Lexi too. I found some of her quirks cute, but her obsession to get her ex, who was clearly a worthless coward, back drove me crazy. I felt she held on to her plan to get her ex back for too long. I loved Gunnar and Lexi together. They had a sweet love and a deep friendship too. There are some really funny moments in this book too. At the end the romantic gestures that Gunnar did had me smiling like a silly sap. They were over the top super sweet and I loved every minute of it.

4 Accepting Who You Are Completely Stars
* * * * It's Live!!!
Whenever I want a heartfelt romance, one which has extra layers added to it... I turn to Maggie McGininnis. Her style of writing lets you tuck in and be taken to a place that is just like that favoritet pocket or groove in the song you love. Her Whisper Creek Series is a perfect example of this type of writing for me.

In this installment, we have Gunnar Peterson... one of the long time ranch hands as the focus. We have meet Gunnar before and he has always been a solid character. With this book, just like all the others in this series, it can be read on its own.

It starts with us being with Alexis Maguire packing for a forced get away to Whisper Creek Ranch by her younger sister. It seems that Alexis has finally had that "Come to Jesus Moment" when she realizes something must change. Two weeks ago her longtime fiance left her a note in her mailbox to inform her he wasn't going to be at the wedding they had planned. He took off on an adventure trip leaving Alexis to feel once again, second best.

It seems this has been the story of her romantic life... starting in grade school. A boy/man would ask her to a dance, an event... and then when the hot, better looking or more desired woman became available or agreed to go with Alexis's date...She would get dropped and the guy would go with the other woman. It was like she was a place holder...she was old reliable...She was like Charlie Brown believing the football was going to be there when he ran to kick it...and have Lucy every time pull it away at the last minute causing him to land on his ass, again.

Well, no more. Lucy's sister has come up with a plan and Alexis has convinced herself to "Go for It". Since Alexis is a school nurse with all of the licenses, her sister talked her into doing a summer stint as a nurse somewhere else...somewhere fun. The opening at Whisper Creek Ranch for their summer season was on the job board and Alexis took it. She will be handling any medical needs of the guests. That she can do...It is the whole different bio her sister put together which has her nervous. It makes her out to be adventurous, free spirited and everything Alexis isn't.

Alexis has always been the responsible one. When her father left 15 years ago, it was she who ended up being her mother's rock. Alexis was the one her mother needed holding her hand through it all. Her sister played the free spirit card to the hilt and so as the years went by, Alexis managed the mother's constant fears of her heart... or some other medical issue which was always happening. Alexis was the one who took her mother to the ER for all the false alarms.

And it took a toll on her. She used up most of her sick and vacation time. It may have factored into her never taking any time for herself and now with this wedding fiasco, Alexis is tired of being told she is boring and just not good enough for a man to follow through with any commitment to her.

Alexis pulls up her big girl panties and goes off to Montana... to where the Cowboys on the Whisper Creek Calendar must be models and not real....for they are amazing...muscles from working the land and faces you dream about. She has looked at all of them and figures the actual cowboys on the ranch will be more like real people...wrinkled, potbellied.

After a plane ride with a entertaining and helpful seatmate, Alexis gets off and there standing big as you please is Mr. July of the Calendar...Holy Sh!t...He is real and looking at her.

Gunnar Peterson has a plan. He is finally where he wants to be; working toward getting his own ranch and handling broken, hard to handle horses. He feels he has found his home for good this time; he is going to plant himself down and make it real. His past of traveling from Army base to Army base with his mom taught him a few things...never try to make yourself into something you're not...learned that lesson the hard way watching his mom tie herself up, moving them to follow his dad all over the country.

Gunnar was asked to pick up the new summer nurse for the ranch. He was fine with it as some of the guests were coming on to him a little too strong lately. Gunnar had no interest in being "Man Candy" for their vacation. It was sometimes tricky to be friendly and professional as part of his job but also get them to understand "Thank you but no thanks," too. So driving a few hours to the airport and getting the nurse was fine with him.

He had no description of this nurse and when she walked out of the tunnel, he was taken by the reddish blond beauty. She acted from the her walk like she was carefree but something in her eyes was telling him vulnerability was there...curious...

Alexis introduced herself as Lexi and over the course of the drive, Gunnar was taken by this woman. Little things would cause her to blush or babble...and it was adorable. Alexis was trying her best to be this New Improved Lexi her sister dreamed up... but it was harder to do in reality. Every time something would come up, she would have to use her sister's life to tell the story... and Gunnar was quick to see the struggle. It made him intrigued and he liked the little bit of the real Lexi she let escape.

These two do more together on the ranch and it comes out what caused Lexi to be there in the first place...she hopes by reinventing herself... she will show her ex how adventurous she really is and he will want her back. When she tells this to Gunnar, he has already started to feel something for her... the real her... but he is willing to take her on her adventure bucket list tasks to watch over and make sure she is safe.

A very sweet and strong friendship develops over the 8 weeks with these two. Gunnar is interested in her and would love to pursue it but he knows she is only here for 8 weeks and then back to Maine and her obligations. She is not a woman to hit it and quit it... and he is not a man to do that either...they are both long haul types and it plays in both of their minds and the attraction grows stronger.

This book was a joy to read. It had a man you would want for your own...caring, strong and who knew who he was...He also was so supportive of Lexi. He loved her for the Lexi she was at her core...and with her time on the ranch she grew into a stronger, more secure Lexi. She was able to see clearly what she allowed in her life and also her own responsibilities in why things happened. She came into herself and we cheered for her.

When these two connected, it was everything a Maggie McGinnis read promises...sexy, hot and loving. They were connected on a true level and wanted the chance to see what would happen if they gave it time.

One of the best parts of this book was seeing all the characters we have grown to love...Ma, the other brothers, their wives and friends of Whisper Creek. The series is so warm and inviting, you can't help wondering if you should book your own adventure trip there...Luckily, until you do, we have all the books in the series to tide us over.

3.5 - "I'm off to find... myself." Stars!

Maggie McGinnis returns to Whisper Creek with the fourth novel from the series; Unlucky In Love.

I have found myself with the last couple of books that I have read by this author, loving most of the aspects of the stories she is telling, but then massively struggling with her characterizations of her female lead. And once again Unlucky in Love fell into that area for me.

"Don’t close the door on possibilities quite yet. You never know what could happen."

Jilted two weeks before her wedding, Alexis Maguire heads to the Whisper Creek Ranch for the summer, to work as the Ranch Nurse, and to find her inner daredevil, and through the course of her adventures meets delectable, sweet and mightily swoony cowboy /ranch hand Gunnar Steele, now at this point I would have been all Fiancé, Schmiancé, tally-ho cowboy, but nope our slightly desperate heroine decides to take another path initially…

"None of this sounds remotely insane to you? Moulding yourself into someone you’re not, in hopes of getting back a guy who I’m dead sure never deserved you in the first place?"

Now I would say that for the most part, I enjoyed this story, especially the parts where the ex, wasn’t Lexi’s sole motivation for doing things, call me independent but I just can’t understand why any woman of any intelligence would want to try and win back a man that dumps her, by letter two weeks before their wedding. Gunnar had all the aspects of a hero that I expect from Maggie, in that he was a gentleman, a charmer and totally lovable in his actions and behaviour towards, Lexi.

"This is real… Whatever’s going on here-and however we decide it ends up-it’s all real."

This was still a relatively enjoyable read, even with the heavy dose of familial drama to finish it off, I loved the way the author pulled everything together, and the ending left me happy-sighing. I just hope that we start to get some more kick-ass type heroines from this author going forwards.

Meant to Be is due for release in January, so happily we don’t have too long to wait to return to Whisper Creek, I get as much enjoyment out of getting updates about past couples as I do from reading the stories the characters books are about. I also hope that Alexis' sister gets a book at some point in the future as well, because there is a single girl, desperate for a good old Cowboy lassoing!

Ms. McGinnis has cornered the market on sweet romance because every book of hers I've read falls into that category and UNLUCKY IN LOVE is no different. It's adorable and the characters are simple but very lovable. And, if you're like me, the Whisper Creek ranch would be your next vacation spot, if it were real. Those descriptions of the mountains and the woods make me want to give up city living for the tranquil mountains.

Alexis Maguire's love history has convinced her that she is cursed with being the 'for-now' girl and sooner or later she gets dumped for a better option, and her fiancé walking away two weeks before their wedding has only served to emphasize that belief. So she decides to make herself over and step one: leave her comfort zone. The best way to do so? Head out west and take a summer job as a ranch nurse in Whisper Creek, where she meets cowboy Gunnar Steele.

Gunnar is a charming gentleman and really sweet, which you think would have an effect on Alexis. Turns out her courage is only good for leaving Maine. Every adventure she attempts is a part of the plan to show her ex that she has become more adventurous and win him back. This is where usually you think a girl is crazy for trying to get a no-good ex back instead of rebounding with the hottie in front of her, but I can actually understand why Alexis was so stuck on getting her ex back and I really can't blame her for being afraid to start all over again, especially when there was no chance of this being more than a summer thing. But I'm also glad that she grew more secure and comfortable with herself that she wasn't afraid to dream of possibilities.

I loved Gunnar because he was so laid back and took life as it came but was willing to pull out all the stops when it came to things that mattered a lot. I loved how welcoming everyone was and darn if the effort they all made to get Gunnar and Alexis together didn't make my heart happy.

I really enjoyed UNLUCKY IN LOVE because it's sweet and easy, with very little drama and is perfect for when you need a very low dose of angst. If you enjoy really engaging friendships and dialogue, then this is the book for you.

Whisper Creek is definitely the place to be! This was the sweetest, emotionally heartwarming story that made your toes curl. I was pleasantly surprised.
This book was a real breath of fresh air!
Throughout the story I had this dreamy and goofy face, and I was utterly picturing this magnificent place. I was transported by the beautiful love story, by the overwhelming feelings and damn by the hot cowboys for sure!

I really have a spot for this author and series, I loved how she could write about lonely and sexy cowboys falling in love with a woman who they have to work for. Always challenging!
The characters and their issues felt real, and it was so freaking sweet and full of good feelings vibes.

Alexis Maguire wanted a change in her life. After a disastrous non wedding, tired of being the good girl with some slight hope to bring her ex-fiancé back to her; she was on a plane to Whisper Creek, hired as the new nurse in the ranch. I had some difficulties to get really acquainted to this character, but I liked to peel all the layers and see how beautiful, full of life she was, despite all her stubbornness to win a guy who wasn’t the one.

Gunnar Peterson, just his name made me smile. True, kind and honest, he was too good to be true for Alexis, off limits. His attraction for a woman who wanted to win an other man’s heart could be surprising. He was really a very supportive guy helping her and also proving that she didn’t need to be a better version of herself, just to open her heart and her mind.
A smoking hot cowboy with a heart of gold was so endearing.

The pace of the book was really great with a beautiful quietness, and scenery places. The two main characters worked perfectly together, as friends and couple to be.
I was delightfully surprised by how the author could write such a sweet book with some strong steamy and sexy vibes.

For the ones who already read the series and mostly for those who haven't yet, don't underestimate the power of the water out there, once you start drinking, the magic will operate! And BAM you will get a cowboy!!

And after finishing it, I'm still like this :

Damn it got it bad!! I love this series!

A Cowboy Convert

Okay, I’m going to actually say this out loud, admit it and suffer the wrath of females everywhere: I’ve never really gotten the cowboy thing.
I know. Go ahead and curse me.
But…I’ve had a complete 180 turnaround ever since I finished an ARC of Maggie MacGinnis’s UNLUCKY in LOVE, her soon to be released novel in the Whisper Creek series. This book is so wonderful, the characters so damn real and fun, the cowboys so delicious, I now know what all the fuss is about- and I am a believer and a convert!

Alexis Maquire is left at the alter 2 weeks before her wedding. This isn’t the first time she’s been dumped so unceremoniously by a beau. Middle school, high school, even in college, the boys she dated where great, but they seemed to be dating her just until they “found someone better.” Which they always did. Alexis is still hung up on ex-fiancé “the Arse”, Tristan, and tries to figure out a way to get him back and make him love her forever. We’ve all been there, girls, haven’t we?

Her sister Katie gets her involved with a summer job as nurse at a ranch in Montana…with single, sexy, cowboys. Just the thing Katie thinks Alexis needs to get her out of her funk about her missed wedding. Oh, and while she’s in Montana, Katie has devised a new identity for her sister, of sorts. She’s not to be plain, old boring Alexis 1.0, but fun, flirtatious, willing to risk it all Lexi 2.0

But can Alexis embrace the new Lexi? Maybe, if it can help her become a better, happier Alexis and show The Arse that she really is marriage worthy.

Gunnar, a real honest to goodness cowboy- and Mr. July in the Whisper Creek Ranch calendar, picks Lexi up at the airport and right away finds her more than enough! But convincing her she doesn’t need to be a new improved version of herself is a tall task – one he’s more than willing to take on.

I hate spoilers, so I’ll stop the plot summary there. But I do want to wax prolific about Ms. McGinnis for a while.

If you haven’t read Maggie McGinnis before, you are in for a treat. Her writing style is easy and effortless, her dialogue spot on. I sat down intending to read a chapter or two and when I looked up I was half way through the book and only had to stop because I had to make dinner for the family! The powers that be categorize this book as a “Sweet Romance,” but let me tell you, there is enough heat , steam, and spark between these two main characters to spontaneously strike a match. And the secondary characters ( Alexis’ family and the people who work at the Ranch) were so beautifully drawn and realized, by the end of the book I felt like they were old friends, come for a visit.

Unlucky In Love is book 4 in the Whisper Creek series and today I am going out to purchase books 1-3 because I need to know what’s happened before with my “new” friends!

I wish I could give this book more than 5 stars.

** I received an advanced readers copy from Loveswept via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. Thank you!**

Unlucky In Love is the fourth book in the Whisper Creek series but can be read as a stand alone. I have been fortunate enough to read this series from the beginning and highly recommend it but it is not necessary in order to follow along.

I had forgotten how much I loved the men and women of Whisper Creek Ranch and Carefree Montana. Opening up this book was like a breath of fresh air and going back to Whisper Creek Ranch was like revisiting that favourite vacation spot. The setting of this series and the writing really take you there and it was easy to visualise everything about it. I fell in love with it in the first book and my love for it has grown with each instalment. I could see the blue skies and mountains and smell the fresh air and horses. I've said it before and I'll say it again, I would vacation here in a heartbeat. It was that appealing.

McGinnis has a way with writing characters that are so sweet and likeable that they are hard to resist. Alexis and Gunnar were introduced in this book and as usual, I liked them both immediately. I could really relate to Alexis on all kinds of levels. Her love of books and a quiet life versus an adventurous one was very much like myself. I too am afraid of so many things that I found it easy to understand her. Gunnar, Gunnar, Gunnar...what could I possibly say about him that would do him justice? Not only was he drool worthy but he was one of the sweetest and respectful male characters I have had the pleasure of reading in quite a while. He didn't do casual or one night stands and I absolutely loved that about him. The chemistry between the two characters was so evident and a real pleasure to read.

This story is pretty clean. You won't find any detailed between the sheets action. However, the chemistry and attraction between Alexis and Gunnar is so powerful that it wasn't necessary. The slight touch of the hand, the way they looked at each other, the hand on the back and the kisses were more than enough to establish the heat between the two of them. Their beginning was built on more than lust and it was so sweet to read.

It is safe to say that normally I can start to tire of a series by the fourth book but that is not the case with this series. I always look forward to revisiting Whisper Creek and I hope that I will have more opportunities to in the future. If you are looking for a well written series full of likeable characters (and cowboys) with a breathtaking setting and engaging stories, look no farther. You can't go wrong with Unlucky In Love or any of the other books from this series.

What a sweet romance! I so enjoy going back to Whisper Creek and visit with the swoon worthy cowboys who work the ranch. This is book 4 of the series, but is definitely a stand alone.

Gunnar and Lexi stole my heart immediately, and I couldn't wait to see how they were going to tie each other up in knots.

Lexi, an elementary school nurse, who describes herself as a "cursed" certifiable introvert, has had numerous, disastrous relationships with guys who would ask her out, but then cancel at the last minute because someone "better" came along. Lexi's "curse" has struck again as her fiancé, Tristan, just dumped her two weeks before their wedding because she wasn't adventuresome enough for him. So, she decides to jet set off to Montana for the summer and work as a nurse at Whisper Creek Ranch where families come to experience life on a ranch, and where they also entertain a lot of single women who come to oogle the "sex on a stick" cowboys who work there. Whisper Creek even has it's own calendar showcasing said "sticks" ;) Lexi is determined to prove to Tristan and herself she can be adventurous no matter how much courage it takes and hopefully win him back.

Gunnar is one of the sexy as sin cowboys, is "Mr. July" on the ranch calendar, and whom also gets extreme attention from the single female guests. Lexi asks Gunnar to help her show Tristan she is capable of doing wild and crazy things and make him jealous. Gunnar knows it is a bad idea, fearing his heart will probably get broken if he agrees to spend that kind of fun time with Lexi, but he says "yes" anyways, all the while hoping her ex-moron stays the hell away. Gunnar is just a yummy, yummy cowboy, who of course, loves horses, especially the ones who need extra special care.

This is an enjoyable read with plenty of romantic adventures! And the epilogue, oh my, wait till you read the epilogue ;) 4.5 Stars!

I have not read this author before and the cover and the blurb for this book caught my eye so i decided to give it a try. Alexis Maguire's track record with men has not been a good one. She thinks she's cursed. The last bust up came when her fiance leaves her 2 weeks before the wedding via a letter. Her sister Katie helps her come up with a game plan and she decides she's going to reinvent herself a little and become the fun and exciting one. Heading off to Whisper Creek to be the nurse there for the summer. Gunnar falls for her the minute he sees her. Forced to be a wanderer in his childhood he craves something permanent. He's a man with a plan for his future. He can totally see Alexis there if he can get her to see what a idiot her ex is. Nothing is easy for Alexis and just when she thinks she's finally found the right man a family emergency changes everything. I really enjoyed this book. It was a snap to read it flowed so well. Everyone on Whisper Creek is pretty fun and loving and a perfect place to live. Gunnar shows Alexis what love is and is her rock when she needs one. I will definitely want to read this author again and wish i had read the previous book in this series but it is not necessary to in order to read this book. A page turner if you enjoy sweet contemporary romance.

This review is based on an ARC provided by the author and/or the publisher via NetGalley in exchange for an honest opinion.

I just found this author the other day. I fell in love with her then.and nothing at all has changed that fact. This was a cute little story. Absolutely loved the hero and most of the other characters in the book. I abhorred her choice of heroine though. You can tell that this is part of a bigger better series, but no bell ringing for this one.

Slick's review posted at Guilty Pleasures Book Reviews

I'm a sucker for book series and I'm a sucker for books about cowboys and books set in Montana because I love that area so much, so Maggie McGinnis' Whisper Creek series was kind of made for me and I was really excited when she announced there would be three more books in this series. Unlucky in Love is the first book in the next three books and I enjoyed a lot, but for me it lacked a bit of the charm the first three books had.

Alexis Maquire is convinced she is cursed; many times over in her life boys and then men have treated her as disposable until someone better comes along including her fiancé who broke up with her via a letter he left in her mailbox. With the summer off from her school nursing job, Alexis (Lexi) takes a job at a Montana guest ranch hoping for some fun and adventure to make her more attractive to the man who left her hanging two weeks before her wedding. What she doesn't count on is ranch hand Gunner Steele making her see that she doesn't need to change to please a man.

I find it amusing and cute that women come to this ranch and find their soul mates or simply don't want to leave. Alexis on the other hand wanted adventure and to become a more interesting and less inhibited person hoping to win her ex back and while Gunner agrees to help her; he also begins to see that she is pretty perfect just the way she is. I loved that about Gunner and that he eventually helped Alexis to see that she just needed to be herself and find the RIGHT man for her. It wasn't easy because Alexis has some big time commitments back in Maine and Gunner is set on staying in Montana. Thankfully Gunner knows exactly what he needs to do to prove he's worth the risk.

This is a sweet romance and while I appreciated their friendship and their getting to know you stage with this couple I didn't feel the intensity between them that I have in the other books in this series. There was more of a comfortable feel between these two, a rightness for sure, but the heat seemed to be missing. However, Unlucky in Love was sweet, charming, emotional, and with beautiful Montana as a backdrop, it was an engaging romance.

#4 in the Whisper Creek romance series

Thanks to NetGalley for a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

I'd rate this a solid 4.5 stars, but I'll round up for Goodreads. This whole book was sweet and loving. I especially loved the ending, which was a total surprise, leaving me with a warm feeling. Typical contemporary romance novels nowadays require lots of hot and steamy sexual scenes--this book had none of them. But it didn't need them. As a matter of fact, they wouldn't have fit with the personalities of the main characters. Actually, the characters are where the story really shone for me. Lexi is trying to remake herself after being dumped so many times that she's decided she's cursed. I thought she'd be annoyingly lacking in confidence, but instead she's got a deep core of strength that she just hasn't recognized yet. I also share many of her quiet, introverted characteristics, so perhaps that's why I identified with her so completely. Gunnar is the perfect romantic hero. He's handsome, caring, thoughtful, but not a player. I enjoyed getting to know them both better. And there was plenty of visiting with characters from earlier books in the series, and the interactions were great and continued to expand the wonderfully warm Whisper Creek setting. There were some fun humorous moments--nothing over the top, just lots of smiles throughout. For example, when Lexi was trying to saddle Goldie for the first time. Or when she decided to sing karoake in a local bar. Cute. A nice bonus was the fact that Lexi is from York, Maine, and described her time spent on Long Sands Beach--a favorite spot of mine as well. All in all, my favorite so far from this series. I can't wait to read more.

Alexis needs something new. The man whom she thought was her life partner ditched her right before their wedding. Encouraged by her younger, care-free sister, she creates a new her. She’ll be all the things her ex-fiance wanted her to be. More fun, more adventurous, read for anything. That’ll show him, and he’ll come running back to her open arms.

Unfortunately – or maybe not – fate partnered up with a too-hot-for-words cowboy and came up with a different plan. Gunnar doesn’t deny his attraction to Lexi (the new Alexis), but he will not get hooked on a woman who’s so hooked on the Idiot (his nickname for her ex) that she’s willing to change everything about herself (everything Gunnar himself is attracted to) to win him back. She should love who she is, and expect the same from any man lucky enough to get with her.

When she seeks out Gunnar’s help to indulge in some of her adventures, she finds herself thinking less and less about the Idiot and more and more about Gunnar. Gunnar starts to see her focus shifting, but he remains reluctant to get too deeply involved, although his heart has a mighty big tug on his actions. The change in the relationship is subtle enough that it’s believable without being too slow. The supporting characters are just that – supportive- not to mention extremely charming and lovable, just like the Lexi and Gunnar. I enjoyed their outings and watching Lexi discover that she’s fine just the way she is. McGinnis did a wonderful job wrapping up the story. I wasn’t the least bit disappointed that the resolution to their problem was not what I expected. It was definitely a happy ending after the unexpected turn.

I LOVED this book and I really enjoyed returning to Whisper Creek! While it's not necessary to have read the prior books to understand and enjoy this story, it was fun to catch up on all the characters I fell in love with in the previous stories. The writing is excellent and there is a nice easy flow to the story.

Alexis Maguire has spent much of her adult life caring for her mother. When the happily ever after she thought she was headed toward comes crashing down around her she knows she needs a break and a little time to herself. Her fiance dumped her just a few weeks before their wedding telling her she is just too predictable and boring. Well spending the summer on a ranch in Montana is neither of those and she plans to show her ex just how fun she can be. The first person she meets is Gunnar Peterson. He's a drop dead gorgeous cowboy who's easy, carefree, and fun to be around. Lexi (yep, shortened the name to be more fun) feels relaxed and adventurous when she's with Gunnar. Soon he has her trying all sorts of things she never would have done on her own. As the summer moves on and their relationship heats up, it saddens both of them to know that things between them could never work. Montana is the home he's always longed for and she's tied with caring for her mother in Maine. Sometimes though with a little faith and a lot of planning everyone can have their HEA!

Put this one on the must read list. I highly recommend it.

I have definitely found a new author to love!!
I just finished a spectacular new book, Unlucky in Love by an author I have never read before, Maggie McGinnis. I do not know why, I had not previously found her, but I have now. This is fourth book in this series (for which I am immensely grateful). I love an emotional romance, and this one certainly fits that bill. It took me through all of the emotions, from laughter, to the awe level, to the crying level. Needless to say, when I read a book, I love ones that can take me so deep into them that I really feel for the characters when something happens. This book certainly did this for me.
I am not going to give synopsis of the book. The blurb has already done that, and because I do not want to slip and give anything away. I will say my favorite part of the book was the horse on the beach, the tears were really running there.
I was gifted with a copy of this wonderful book by Random House Publishing Group - Loveswept for which I am eternally thankful. This book gave me hours of mind encompassing reading.
Now, I cannot wait to go read the rest of the books in this series. By the way, this book is a complete story, with a superb ending, and not a cliffhanger.
Kudos Ms. McGinnis on a phenomenal book!
Thank you for reading my review.

This was a sweet and enjoyable read for me. I think everyone needs a "Gunner" in their life. He certainly the book for me. Alexis and Gunner's romance was very sweet and romantic making the book full of warm feelings and happily ever after. It was just what I had been looking for.
Alexis has spent her life being responsible and it has stifled her. After a harsh break up, she's left trying to find out she wants to be. She finds an interesting looking ranch getaway that lands her right in the path of sexy cowboy Gunner.
Gunner is a cowboy who has paid his dues and is perfectly peaceful and content with where he is. He didn't even what hit him when Alexis storms into his life with a plan to reinvent herself. He wants be supportive, but something didn't seem right to him.
They definitely have an interesting road ahead of them.
I enjoyed this book and think I'll enjoy the other Whisper Creek books. I'd recommend this to all of my fellow romance fans looking for a warm and fuzzy HEA.

You know how much I love this series already, but somehow this one snuck out without me knowing. So, I read book five before reading this one, but you can read this series out of order and not get lost, so it was all good.

Lexi has quite the tricky home life. I'm not a fan of her mother or her sister. Plus, her ex-fiance is a complete turd. Needless to say, the girl needs a break, and if I were her, I'd run to Whisper Creek too. Then she meets Gunnar. There is an instant attraction, but that's okay in Whisper Creek, because there's obviously "something in the water". *wink*

This was a clean and cute romance, and it was packed with chemistry. Like all the books in this series, it keeps your interest in the romance so much so that you feel like you're right there in the room with the main characters. Awkward as that sounds, it makes for a delicious reading experience. I can't get enough of Whisper Creek!

5.0 out of 5 stars Maggie McGinnis does it again!, October 11, 2016
By twonutty99
Maggie McGinnis's Whisper Creek novel is one that I would be comfortable sharing with my 13 year old great-niece and my 77 years old aunt. It is a sweet Romance. There is some heat, but no sex. You don't need it. Even through Unlucky in Love is a stand alone and can be enjoyed by itself why would you when you can read the series from the beginning. It is set in Montana on a ranch that has cowboys on it. What's not to like. It is a fun, easy fast read and you will enjoy reading Alexis and Gunnar story.

A Lovely Fast-paced Romance
What I liked most about this novel:
- Likeable characters
- A well-painted canvas for the Montana setting – now I want to visit!
- Several times the story made me laugh out loud
- Aside from a couple of things, the story captivated me

What I didn’t care for as much:
- A mostly predictable ending
- It was trying too hard in the middle, constantly referring to the previous characters' stories – we heard many times how the past 3 sets of couples went through the same thing as this current set. We really didn’t need to have this explained to us over and over – leave a little mystery, something to the imagination for the characters to work out for themselves.

This is a good story about two people lost who come together at whisper creek. Alexis Maguire’s wedding comes and goes without the groom showing up. Tired and not waiting around she travels west to Montana and whisper creek. Not looking for romance she is looking for a recharge of her inner self, and she finds that and more. Gunner Peterson has been working at the ranch for six months and after a childhood of moving around always he has seem to have found a home. When these two meet neither are looking for romance but say in whisper creek don’t drink too much of the water for love will find you. This is what happens between these two but they put up a good fight. A good story with good characters. Worth the read. I got this book from netgalley. I gave it 4 stars. Received an ARC from NetGalley for an honest review.

Well now I kinda want to move to Montana. The way McGinnis describes Whisper Creek makes it seem absolutely perfect...throw in some attractive cowboys and your girl is hooked. Lexi gets a job on a ranch, helping out as a nurse as a way to lick her wounds recovering from practically being left at the altar. But she's got an alterior motive and when she enlists Gunnar's help, it isn't long before the attraction starts and Lexi realizes that maybe the "happily ever after" she was expecting was all smoke and mirrors. While there's a lot we get from Lexi's past, I feel like we sped past the issues in Gunnar's life and I would have liked more. All in all, a cute read that made me want to go horseback riding.

BOOK SYNOPSIS

From the author of Once Upon a Cowboy (“Sexy, charming, and perfectly heartwarming.”—Lauren Layne) comes another sweet novel of the Whisper Creek Ranch, where sizzling Montana men melt the most stubborn hearts.

Praise for the Whisper Creek series

“Sexy, charming, and perfectly heartwarming, Once Upon a Cowboy is the ultimate pick-me-up. Everything about this book made me smile. Maggie McGinnis just keeps getting better and better!”—USA Today bestselling author Lauren Layne

“Witty dialogue, a heartwarming story, and a hero I’d like to take home with me combine for a compelling and enjoyable read. Maggie McGinnis has crafted a novel sure to make you want a cowboy of your own!”—New York Times bestselling author Cheyenne McCray, on A Cowboy’s Christmas Promise

“With characters you’ll love and a story that will make you smile, Accidental Cowgirl is a winner from a witty new voice in contemporary romance.”—New York Times bestselling author Christie Craig

Includes a special message from the editor, as well as an excerpt from another Loveswept title.

My Thoughts

Just from the awe inspiring descriptions of the countryside would love to visit the towns and area that Whisper Creek Ranch is supposed to be set in, it sounds more breathtaking every time a new character gets there and falls in love with the mountains, the ranch and the particular cowboy who catches their fancy.

I will never view a lobster dinner the same way again, when you get to it around 68 to 69% in the story you will need to be somewhere private or those around you will think your uproarious laughter a bit odd.

The epilogue was so very different and the surprise Gunnar pulled off for he and Lexi was the sweetest, not too mention most romantic gesture, scene in the book and guaranteed to make you need a few tissues.

My favorite couple and my favorite story!

But for now I can live vicariously through Alexis. Maggie McGinnis has another charmer here and the sweetness of the story will hold on till the end. Read the rest of my review below.

Lexi 2.0

Alexis or Lexi, wants to reinvent herself. Cursed in love, her fiance calls it off right before the wedding. She, along with her sister hatch the Lexi 2.0 plan. The Lexi in this plan is more outgoing, takes risks, and knows how to have fun. However, the Lexi in this plan still wants her sleaze of an ex back. For she believes that he wants a more “sparkly” wife. Her insequirities and her somewhat delusional fantasy about him make for countless times that I spoke to my Kindle telling her to snap out of it.

Lexi’s secret plan (The one that was not discussed with her sister):

1. Take a bunch of photos doing cool stuff
2. Send to ex
3. Wait for him to come to his senses
4. Marry him for an HEA

Oh, Lexi, but you don’t know that flying all the way to Whisper Creek will throw a wrench in those plans....

There’s something in the water...

hot-cowboys-hot-cowboys-everywhere

Whisper Creek=Cowboy Heaven. Or is it if you are in Whisper Creek, you have somehow died and gone to cowboy heaven? But I digress...

Lexi is told to not drink the water because she might end up staying there permanently. Hmm...and that would be a bad thing why? Oh, responsibilities. High maintenance mother back home, a job, and a sister that needs her.

Favorite Gunnar Quote

“You clearly haven’t met the Whisper Creek barn cats yet.”

However, an unattached hot cowboy, named Gunnar turns her wold upside down. While Lexi tries to reinvent herself, Gunnar wants to discover the real Lexi. And it might sound cliche’ but he ends up discovering himself as well. His hangups about moving and her hangups about moving, cause the tension in the story.

Lexi 3.0

A little over 70% into the story, insert reader tears and dread.
At 92%, insert relief and feelings of awwww.

Lexi 3.0 gets her cowboy and HEA. Even though I thought her perfect just the way she was, her reinvention provided her with character growth that was necessary to achieve her happily ever after.

A little note...

This was my first read in the Whisper Creek series. It can totally be read as a standalone. But seriously, I need to backtrack and acquaint myself with more hot cowboys. :D

Unlucky in Love is the fourth book in Maggie McGinnis' Whisper Creek series and it's the second novel in the series that I've read.

Alexis (Lexi), an elementary school nurse in York, Maine, is on summer break and the title of this novel explains her situation perfectly. Two weeks before their wedding day, her fiance, Tristan, ended their engagement by dropping a letter into her mailbox and disappearing. It's not the first time something like this has happened to her, the two-week curse has been a pattern in her life all through her school and dating years and it's led to a serious case of low self-esteem. Add to that the fact that she's been the one to care for her hypochondriac mother for the past decade, while Katie, her younger sister has avoided that duty and had an active social life. When she compares herself to Katie, she believes that she's dull and boring. The break-up convinced her that she needs to change, and she hopes that by becoming a more exciting, adventurous woman she can win back Tristan's affection. With Katie's pushing, she's taken a summer job as a staff nurse at the Whisper Creek Ranch resort in Montana, and she and Katie have even drawn up a bucket list, a list which ends with "do a cowboy."

The handsome cowboy in question is Gunnar, the employee and honorary family member sent to retrieve Lexi from the airport. Having viewed the ranch on-line before leaving home, Lexi and Katie both assumed that the handsome cowboys posted on the website were just models, but Gunnar and the rest of the cowboys on staff are both very real and very handsome. Gunnar takes a particular interest in Lexi and when she finally explains her situation to him, he agrees to help her spice up her life by arranging a series of adventures for her, horseback riding, rock climbing, white water rafting and even paragliding. Three of the ranch women she meets are from back East, and their stories were told in the preceding novels. They came to Whisper Creek for short vacations and never left, and they warn Lexi that's there's something in the water that seems to have that effect on women, and these three found love and happiness there.

Slowly but surely, Gunnar tries to help Lexi change into someone more vivacious and exciting, but he refers to her ex-fiance as The Idiot, and cannot understand why she'd try to change into someone she's not to please him or regain his affection. As she tries new things, she sends selfies of herself back to Tristan, but she never hears back from him. Gunnar is attracted to Lexi just as she is, and just as their relationship begins to develop, she gets an urgent message from his sister that their mother has had a heart attack and Lexi must race back to Maine.

What about her budding relationship with Gunnar, who's made it clear his life is in Montana? What about Lexi's mother, who in addition to her heart attack also broke her hip? What happens when Tristan shows up and wants to rekindle the romance with the new, exciting Lexi? To learn the answers to these questions, you'll just have to read this well-written, sweet, funny, sad and charming romance to find out.

I know I begin a lot of my book reviews this way, but I absolutely loved this book. Put it this way, for me to say this about a book that is a 4th book in a series AND I haven’t read the other 3 before it, its huge. Like super huge because I am very picky about books in series. I am that person that has to read a series from the beginning so I know about the other people in the book first. Normally, if I read the books out of whack, then I get out of whack, know what I mean….lol. So I was happy that I could read this basically as a standalone.

The romance between Alexis and Gunnar was so sweet. It started off as a friendship of sorts (she asked him to help her with getting her ex-fiance (aka THE IDIOT) back by showing him how much fun she was having (for a lack of better words) and he agreed. The romance just grew from there.

Alexis was a sweetheart, in my eyes. She was a dependable person who was kinda afraid to step out of her comfort zone. Which is why she thinks that Tristan (aka THE IDIOT) left her. Her summer job at the Whisper Creek Ranch is supposed to let her explore her adventurous side. With her sister’s help, she makes up a list of what to do. That goes out the window when she meets Gunnar.

Gunnar was a cowboy with a past. Not an awful past. Up until he was 16, he traveled the country with his mother….who was following his father and his wife. Yeah, that’s kinda screwed up. So he craves stability, which is no shocker. He is also Mr July in the Whisper Creek Ranch calendar and website(OMG, when Alexis met him at the airport and realized who he was, I was dying laughing). He is also works with rescued horses and is very, very talented with that. Finding his love was the last thing on his mind but when he saw Alexis, it was over.

For some reason, I totally related to Alexis. From her failed paragliding adventure with the sorority sisters (I have an extreme fear of heights) to her drunken night of karaoke AND texting it to her ex fiance (been there, done that), I could see us being great friends. Heck, she even had a dysfunctional family (waves hand over here, I do too).

The ending and the epilogue got me right in the feels. Lets just saw that Gunnar is awesome and is perfect for Alexis (read the book).

How many stars will I give Unlucky in Love? 5

Why? A great clean (aka no sex) romance that makes you laugh and cry at various points in the book. Put it this way, I want a Gunnar in my life!!!

Will I reread? Yes

Will I recommend to family and friends? Yes

Age Range: Teen

Why: The cleanest romance that isn’t a Christian romance that I have read in a while. No sex, a couple of kissing scenes and that’s it. Some language, a drunken night at karaoke bar complete with bad singing and some poor lobsters getting cooked….lol.

An emotionally captivating, beautiful romance that is a must read! I was pulled in right from the start, and it stayed with me long after the last word. With it's unique storyline, interesting characters that you can't help but love, humorous, heartwarming, charming, and intriguing surprises, this story will capture your heart and not let go. An irresistible love story everyone will enjoy.

Gunner had a difficult time growing up with his mom always following his military father, which made forming any kind of long term attachments impossible, until he fell in love with Whisper Creek ranch. He's finally made his way back to the one place he loves, ready to put down permanent roots, then he meets Lexi.

Alexis, aka Lexi, has been always been the dependable daughter taking care of her "sick" mother since her father left. She's sweet, shy, would rather stay home and read than go out partying, but also has delt with a "curse," always being the "until something better comes along" girl. After being dumped 2 weeks before her wedding, her sister decides to help her step out of her comfort zone, and gets her a job as a nurse at the ranch. Lexi decides to try to be adventurous while becoming the woman her ex wanted her to be, recruits Gunner into helping her, until she starts having feelings for him.

Can Gunner make Lexi see that she doesn't need to change who she is, and that she's perfect being herself? Will Lexi finally see how her ex wasn't the perfect guy for her before it's too late? How could they possibly make things work out between them living on different sides of the country? Will they find a way to be together, or will circumstances beyond their control decide for them? Will either of them get the HEA they deserve?

This is my first book in this series, and I absolutely loved it! It can be read as a stand alone, but I do intend to go back and read the others in the series. If you're interested in this book/series, I suggest that you start from the beginning. If this book is any indication of how the rest of the series is, then they'll all be fantastic reads! I strongly recommend this book, series, and outstanding author!

Unlucky in Love

More hot country cowboys from the Whisper Creek Ranch!

Two weeks before her wedding Alexis Maguire finds a note from her fiancé that states that he’s leaving. She doesn’t hear from him again despite trying numerous times to reach out to him. In hopes of changing herself from the boring, dependable sibling that seems to turn men away she sets out to be revamp herself. With a little help from her younger sister, Katie, they start Lexi 2.0 by getting her a summer job as a nurse at the Whisper Creek Ranch. While Katie wanted Lexie to go to help stop mopping around and to get over Tristan, Alexis is determined to do things to make him want her back. She’s tired of being boring, of being afraid to try new things and is determined to be brave even if it means taking her out of her comfort zone. Maybe if she sends him pictures of her doing all of the things that she would never do in the past, he will want her back.

It doesn’t take a genius to know that the new nurse at the ranch isn’t as brave she tries to make herself out to be but what Gunnar can’t understand is why she would want to try and change who she is for someone who obviously didn’t appreciate her in the first place. One thing is certain though, he can’t get involved with her because her life is back in York, Maine while his right here in Montana.

I was so happy to see that this series was continuing after all of the girls that series was first based on had had their stories told had all found their HEAs at the Whisper Creek Ranch! The ranch has come a long way from the struggles that it was having when this series first started. It’s now packed to brim with guests and getting busier all the time. If you have followed the series from the beginning you will be happy that all of your favorites are still in it but if you haven’t read any of the previous books, don’t worry this one can be read as a stand-alone.

I received an ARC from the publisher through Netgalley in return for an honest review.

Holy Guacamole!!! With each new book in the Whisper Creek series I hate this author a little more... because every time she manages to make me fall head over heels in love with a new, very handsome and, alas! very fictional, cowboy. Her books always give me a bad cowboy hangover I need days to recover from... So, yes, I love her books but I hate that Whisper Creek doesn't exist - nor do the cowboys!

In the first three books in the Whisper Creek Series, we got to meet the two Driscoll brothers (Decker and Cole) and their handsome friend Daniel, the town vet. In Unlucky In Love, we meet two characters who are new to the fans of the series—and this might be a good reason to grab the book even if you haven’t read the previous ones.

Alexis and Gunnar's time together on the ranch is beautifully described and, just like in the previous books, you’ll be pulled into the story and will be able to see, smell and feel life on the ranch. You’ll become another member of the Driscoll family, you’ll laugh at Alexis’ antics and suffer with her, you’ll fall in love with Gunnar page after page, and by chapter three you’ll already be rooting for their happily ever after.

Once again, Mrs. McGinnis has crafted a beautiful story filled with the best elements of romance, without the annoying sex scenes that most of the time take away from the story (at least, as far as I’m concerned). There is absolutely no lack of chemistry, and you won’t be noticing the lack of sex because the writing is so compelling, you just won’t be able to put the book down for a moment.

If you love a good (clean) country romance that will keep you glued to your e-reader, buy this one (and if you haven't, go back and read the previous books - you won't regret it).
