Winry continues to be the best. It's great when she begins to realize her true worth: "I guess I have people who are waiting for me to come back too." But what I love about this series is that every character develops into a full, changing, conflicted character. Even Scar, who has seemed completely unfeeling, is affected by his encounter with Winry: "Do my eyes...look like that too? No matter how far I travel down this road, will hatred only give birth to more hatred?"

I can’t believe I’m only on Volume 8 and we’re past where the original anime diverged from the manga. There’s still so much story left! We’re really so lucky that we got to have Brotherhood to adapt everything the way it was meant to be.

This is where, I feel, the series really starts to get heavier. This is a volume where A LOT of characters get some nice development. We get to see Winry have a breakdown that’s not about Ed and Al for once. We get to see Scar as sympathetic. He’d a villain, but Arakawa has also made him a person. It’s hard not to understand how he feels about the military, but it’s just as painful to see him consider his actions with something like regret.

We get to see more of Hoenheim and what sort of person he is. The real gold in this volume though is Edward’s growth and finding out what really happened to Trisha. The scene with Edward and Granny digging up the grave is absolutely heart-wrenching and, in my opinion, features some of the best character work in the series so far.

There’s also plenty of action in the last few chapters, and I’m always impressed by how clean and clear Arakawa is able to make her battles while still including artistically stunning panels. We see Ed, Scar, Ling and even Al in action. Mustang, despite his injuries in the previous volumes, also gets a little chance to shine in a different role from usual.

I feel like this volume pivots how we feel about a lot of the characters. We see Winry more for who she really is. We see Scar as a man. We see Ling as the future emperor who cares about his subjects. Even Edward changes. This is a powerful volume and a turning point for the series. It can only get better from here.

We STILL get the stakes being raised!
We STILL get great humor and awesome panel art!
For once I think this is the first time we didn't get a new character lol

There was so much emotion in this volume. Between Al's body, the human transmutation Al and Ed performed, Winry's parents, AND their Teachers history with her own human transmutation....there's just alot and I loved it all.

We also delve more into the mystery and have some answers (maybe) revealed.

Just keep. it. coming!

After some thought I believe in hindsight some of the plot twists could be revealed a bit more interestingly. Specifically, up to this point, I'm thinking of
I dont know if the show did it better or not but I thought I could recall that the reveals to some of these twists were done alot better instead of people just talking.

What I love about this volume:

1. The reveals: love interest, identities, back stories, etc.

2. The Aristotelian metaphysics.

3. The brotherly love is at an all time high.

4. The sacrifices characters make for one another.

5. The pro-life message.

6. The artwork (as usual).

7. The baby panda. Ugh, Shao May is way too adorable!

- è possibile recuperare il corpo di Al. Secondo Edward, il corpo del fratello esiste ancora da qualche parte e la mente sta facendo da collegamento tra corpo e anima. Ora vorrei solamente capire cosa diavolo era la cosa che è uscita fuori dal loro esperiemento di trasmutazione umana. Quello che è certo è che i defunti non possono essere richiamati indietro: ergo, ci sono ancora delle possibilità di salvare Alphonse e di ridargli il suo vecchio corpo. Bisogna solo capire come fare;
- Scar torna in scena alla grande, continuando a portare avanti il suo progetto di vendetta contro gli alchimisti di stato. Già si intuiva dai dettagli dati nel volume precedente, ma dovrebbe essere lui il responsabile della morte dei genitori di Winry. Nel tentativo di catturare due piccioni con una fava, Ed vuole attirare l'attenzione sia di Scar che degli homunculus: ne esce un combattimento senza quartiere, con i fratelli Elric sostenuti dal colonnello Mustang e da Ling, mentre dall'altro lato ci sono sia Scar, che Gluttony e Wrath. Tanto per cominciare, stima per Ling che è sopravvissuto all'assalto di King Bradley (rivelando così a tutti la sua vera identità) ed è pure riuscito a catturare Gluttony. Lo scontro tra Scar e i fratelli....beh, prende una piega drammatica quando Winry scopre che i due stanno affrontando l'assassino dei suoi genitori. Per la ragazza sarà un momento chiave: prendere la pistola e togliere la vita a un altro essere umano in nome dell'odio e della vendetta, con il concreto rischio di essere uccisa a sua volta, oppure cercare di vivere, senza abbandonare tutte le persone che le vogliono bene e hanno ancora bisogno di lei. L'intervento di Ed e il buon cuore della ragazza permetteranno di spezzare questo circolo vizioso di odio;
Ergo, shit is coming.

Mark my words, shit is coming.

Definitely my favorite volume up until now. I sometimes forget just how objectively good Fullmetal Alchemist is, until I pick another volume of the manga and get reminded at how well written this story is.

This is a point in the story when the intensity picks up a notch. We get more depth into the characters, mainly in the first chapters, that are heavily focused on their psychology. I absolutely adore that. I don't think I've ever read or seen a piece of fiction with characters that fleshed out and that well written. It's got such a big and various cast and each of them is unique and so interesting to read about. Everyone is slowly started to be introduced more and more, and I fall in love with each of them a bit more everytime I delve back into this universe. Of course, I will always have my soft spot for Ed, and seeing his growth (both literally and figuratively) always gets me. And of course, Hohenheim, who is my #1 weakness, and the character that will always make me cry no matter how short his appearance is.

The plot is incredible as well. Everything is slowly starting to link up, and you can feel that shit is going to blow up very fast very soon. I absolutely adore the fight scenes, that are always so well choreographed, and I cannot wrap my mind around the fact that they're always so emotional, without removing any of their epicness. And, in between these heavy moments, it never forgets to be absolutely hilarious. I love that we're getting a bit more explanation that in the anime, it's way easier to follow along and understand just how insane the storytelling is. I'm blown away by how well the parallels between events or characters are put in place. Truly, from the bottom of my heart, no story will ever be as good as FMA.

This is a review of the entire series.

Fullmetal Alchemist takes place in the fictional country of Amestris which is heavily based on the Industrial Revolution. Amestris is a unitary state under the rule of a parliamentary republic, run by state alchemists that serve the king utilizing the mystifying arts of alchemy. Alchemy is the power to alter the physical world utilizing its natural elements, performing magic and miracles in the form of science. Alchemy follows the law of equivalent exchange, you must sacrifice something that is of equal value to what you create. You must sacrifice a life to create a life, you must extinguish one flame to ignite another, you have to sacrifice one home to build another, etc...

After being abandoned by their father as children and subjected to watching their mother die, Edward Elric and his brother Alphonse once attempted to utilize the power of alchemy to bring their mother back from the grave, ignoring the dangers of creating a life by offering something of equal value. Edward loses an arm and a leg while Alphonse loses his entire body; his soul placed in a hollow suit of armor that can't feel the touch of others. As neither of them sacrificed their lives in their entirety, the exchange failed and the boys created an abomination in place of their dead mother.

After burning their own home down and dealing with the abomination they created, Edward and his brother enlist themselves in the military to atone for their sins and learn more about the many secrets of alchemy; potentially learning how to recover their original bodies in the process. While serving in the military, the brothers begin to realize how the wonders of alchemy can be abused for nefarious purposes. Immortal life can be gained by sacrificing hundreds of innocents souls, wars can be staged and foreign nations can be annihilated under false charges, human experimentation aided by alchemy can lead to unnatural mutations, the world of alchemy is more dark and dangerous than either of them could've bargained for.

Fullmetal Alchemist grew on me the longer I read it. When I first started reading, it seemed like it was going to be generic shounen material, but it gets deeper and darker the further it goes on. The way it handles political and religious corruption, the dangers of advanced states abusing their technology and resources at the expense of foreign nations caught in the turmoil, and the sad futility of revenge are all very well done.

The characters all bear the weight of what alchemy is capable of. Edward and Alphonse carry the burden of abusing alchemy for selfish purposes. Their master Izumi loses her womb after attempting to resurrect her dead child. Scar takes many lives after his entire country is desecrated and gets trapped in a pointless cycle of revenge. Roy and Riza endure the regret of committing brutal war crimes for the sake of protecting their own nation. Alchemy creates and destroys in equal measure and no one is free from the consequences of tipping the balance.

The fight scenes are flashy and exciting without being too over-the-top because of the dangerous limitations that alchemy involves. The law of equivalent exchange keeps the power scaling in check and adds plenty of tension to the action. The female characters are especially well done, all of them are strong and unique in their own way. The lead heroine Winry being a skilled mechanic, Riza being an honorable warrior of the military, Olivier Armstrong as cold and vicious as the snowy fortress she guards, and that's just a few of them.

The villains are an interesting parody of the seven deadly sins. Each of them represent the darkness and regrets of each of the main characters and they can only be conquered by coming to terms with their own flaws and sins. The characters having to overcome their personal demons to take on the greater demons trying to overthrow the world from the shadows made the struggles of every single person in the story feel personal. Every character, no matter how minor had their moments to shine. Everyone had a vital role to play and the camaraderie between friend and foe alike never felt cheesy or forced.

Unlike most shounen series I've read, the final arc was my favorite. A lot of long-running shounen series have a habit of being dragged out, losing touch with what made them great or breaking their own rules in messy, plot-hole-filled final arcs that leave a lot to be desired. Fullmetal Alchemist has no lose ends, all characters have complete arcs where they learn and grow from their dark pasts, the romance and comedy are handled well without relying on cheap fanservice, the action scenes are great but they don't overshadow the plot and the final chapters tie everything together beautifully. It's not my favorite manga by any means as I usually tend to favor seinen, but it's definitely one of the greatest stories to ever come out of the shounen demographic in my opinion. The ending is a tearjerker but it left me in good spirits.

"Your hands weren't meant to take people's lives. They were meant to save them."

It was a great struggle picking a quote for this volume. So many big moments happen in this volume.

Only Fullmetal Alchemist can entertain you with badass action and characters, engross you with revelations and military politics, inspire you by the drive of characters to reach their goals, while also leaving you in tears with emotional gut punches.

Nothing is better than a well written anti-hero/antagonist with a sad backstory that justifies their actions. Scar is one of the best examples of that. Even when he's actively attempting to hurt the protagonists, I can't help but to root for him.

One of Hiromu Arakawa's strengths as an author is keeping track of moving parts in her story and perfectly integrating them into the main storyline. I loved discovering the existence of a connection Ed and Al's father has to the Homunculi due to a seemingly unimportant event.

If these Fullmetal Editions had sewn bindings instead of crappy glue, they would be just about perfect. The story inside is already there! Hiromu Arakawa is obviously some kind of sorceress as I am enthralled by everything she produces. Her art is fantastic, the stories are entertaining, and her characters are unforgettable. Any fan of sequential art, graphic storytelling, and/or manga should be demanding this series from their local library or taking home copies of the Fullmetal Edition reprints to read, display on their bookshelves, and reread time and again. My kids also enjoy Arakawa sensei’s work here and in the also brilliant Silver Spoon.

Volume 8 is a real page turner as we see Edward learn the truth about human transmutation and gain renewed hope that he can restore Alphonse to his original body. The boys also use Scar to lure out the hommunucli and with help from Ling and the sacrifices of Lan Fan as well as assistance from Mustang and co the boys capture Gluttony. Enraged by the knowledge it was Mustang who killed Lust, Gluttony has only one thing on his mind by the books close: The end of Roy Mustang.

We also have a pivotal moment for Winry upon learning that Scar was the one responsible for her parents deaths. In the end, Winry does not go down the road she would likely never come back from.

None of that was in order, just DAMN I love this series. There is never a lull and everything is paced incredibly well.
