7/10 stars

This volume was mostly dedicated to the Ishvalan war, and it was mostly quite well done - especially the negative spreads, highlighting the horrors of war. On the other hand, however, I felt as if this was mostly unnecessary - we already knew what had happened there, and FMA style doesn't entirely lends itself to the images of war, IMO. The motivations of different characters are made clear...er, but at the same time it means that the manga loses some of its ambivalence - which I valued. So, in a way, I'm of two minds about this particular volume ;).

I like some of the reveals, though, and I'm waiting to see it all come together soon.

I truly do just love FMA so much. This volume (re?) introduces one of my favorite characters and begins the explanation of what happened in Ishvala, which if you know, is a crucial part to the story.

I also am so happy that I'm collecting this gorgeous Fullmetal Editions of one of my favorite manga.

It wasn't the flashback itself that drug this book down for me, it was the execution. For whatever reason it was hard to follow, that segment of the story wasn't set up in the same black background format as the rest of the flashbacks have been in the story and Arakawa didn't do much to make the characters look younger so it kept throwing me off. I understand that the ranks of the characters were different and that was probably supposed to be what was tipping us off that it was a different time period but I always remember the characters based off their names and faces not their ranks so it kind of went over my head. Oh well, in running series it's rare for the whole thing to be a full 5 stars all the way through, we'll cut FMA some slack on this one.

Not much humor in this one, and surprisingly, hardly any Ed and Al. The major event in this volume is the flashback to the Ishvalan extermination, which reveals details about how some characters became the way they are when we first meet them. There is some very interesting background about Mustang and Hawkeye. The book begins with Greed taking over Ling, and much of the book can be read as characters struggling with (or gleefully giving in to) greed.

When this edition of the books is completed, I really want to read the whole series, with no breaks between books. Everything has become way too complex to step away for a few months and then dive back in.

This continues to be my favorite manga series of all time. I love that we got more background on the war in this story and more character origin stories; however, I found the time jumps to be a bit confusing. It also was a more heavy volume, so I’m missing some of the jokes and laughter that the other volumes have. Also there wasn’t nearly enough Alphonse in this one!

Beragam misteri mulai terkuak di voluem ini. Penuh ketegangan!!

I think I may have cried the most from this volume. The Ishvalan War has so many parallels to current events. Please be mindful if you’re reading this post 2023, it may be triggering.

I just have so much respect for Hiromu Arakawa for her delivery on the evils of Imperialism, capitalism and genocide. Shounen manga just doesn’t do that. Her attention to speaking on marginalized groups specifically is why FMA continues to outlast any other series in my opinion.

This is a review of the entire series.

Fullmetal Alchemist takes place in the fictional country of Amestris which is heavily based on the Industrial Revolution. Amestris is a unitary state under the rule of a parliamentary republic, run by state alchemists that serve the king utilizing the mystifying arts of alchemy. Alchemy is the power to alter the physical world utilizing its natural elements, performing magic and miracles in the form of science. Alchemy follows the law of equivalent exchange, you must sacrifice something that is of equal value to what you create. You must sacrifice a life to create a life, you must extinguish one flame to ignite another, you have to sacrifice one home to build another, etc...

After being abandoned by their father as children and subjected to watching their mother die, Edward Elric and his brother Alphonse once attempted to utilize the power of alchemy to bring their mother back from the grave, ignoring the dangers of creating a life by offering something of equal value. Edward loses an arm and a leg while Alphonse loses his entire body; his soul placed in a hollow suit of armor that can't feel the touch of others. As neither of them sacrificed their lives in their entirety, the exchange failed and the boys created an abomination in place of their dead mother.

After burning their own home down and dealing with the abomination they created, Edward and his brother enlist themselves in the military to atone for their sins and learn more about the many secrets of alchemy; potentially learning how to recover their original bodies in the process. While serving in the military, the brothers begin to realize how the wonders of alchemy can be abused for nefarious purposes. Immortal life can be gained by sacrificing hundreds of innocents souls, wars can be staged and foreign nations can be annihilated under false charges, human experimentation aided by alchemy can lead to unnatural mutations, the world of alchemy is more dark and dangerous than either of them could've bargained for.

Fullmetal Alchemist grew on me the longer I read it. When I first started reading, it seemed like it was going to be generic shounen material, but it gets deeper and darker the further it goes on. The way it handles political and religious corruption, the dangers of advanced states abusing their technology and resources at the expense of foreign nations caught in the turmoil, and the sad futility of revenge are all very well done.

The characters all bear the weight of what alchemy is capable of. Edward and Alphonse carry the burden of abusing alchemy for selfish purposes. Their master Izumi loses her womb after attempting to resurrect her dead child. Scar takes many lives after his entire country is desecrated and gets trapped in a pointless cycle of revenge. Roy and Riza endure the regret of committing brutal war crimes for the sake of protecting their own nation. Alchemy creates and destroys in equal measure and no one is free from the consequences of tipping the balance.

The fight scenes are flashy and exciting without being too over-the-top because of the dangerous limitations that alchemy involves. The law of equivalent exchange keeps the power scaling in check and adds plenty of tension to the action. The female characters are especially well done, all of them are strong and unique in their own way. The lead heroine Winry being a skilled mechanic, Riza being an honorable warrior of the military, Olivier Armstrong as cold and vicious as the snowy fortress she guards, and that's just a few of them.

The villains are an interesting parody of the seven deadly sins. Each of them represent the darkness and regrets of each of the main characters and they can only be conquered by coming to terms with their own flaws and sins. The characters having to overcome their personal demons to take on the greater demons trying to overthrow the world from the shadows made the struggles of every single person in the story feel personal. Every character, no matter how minor had their moments to shine. Everyone had a vital role to play and the camaraderie between friend and foe alike never felt cheesy or forced.

Unlike most shounen series I've read, the final arc was my favorite. A lot of long-running shounen series have a habit of being dragged out, losing touch with what made them great or breaking their own rules in messy, plot-hole-filled final arcs that leave a lot to be desired. Fullmetal Alchemist has no lose ends, all characters have complete arcs where they learn and grow from their dark pasts, the romance and comedy are handled well without relying on cheap fanservice, the action scenes are great but they don't overshadow the plot and the final chapters tie everything together beautifully. It's not my favorite manga by any means as I usually tend to favor seinen, but it's definitely one of the greatest stories to ever come out of the shounen demographic in my opinion. The ending is a tearjerker but it left me in good spirits.

Such a bleak volume...

Existential crisis word diarrhoea:

I will say this, even after that existential crisis word diarrhoea I still want to continu on with this series! Which speaks volumes about the storytelling. Very well done

***Read for the 30 in 30 Manga Challenge***
Runs from Friday April 1 to Saturday April 30

The person whose announcement I saw for this challenge was Shaegeeksout on YouTube. She announced this challenge in their MANGA CHALLENGE ANNOUNCEMENT | 30 IN 30 IS BACK! video.

It's a bit embarrassing to admit but I have way too many unread manga on my shelves. I say it’s embarrassing because unlike my fiction books I feel like manga isn’t too much of a time-commitment. So having series complete, but only the first volume is read, is not okay in my bookish world.

So doing this will hopefully knock some series off my TBR shelves.

Read more graphic novel reviews at www.graphiclibrary.org.

At the beginning of this novel, we get the resolution of the big reveal from the previous volume, where Ed, Alphonse, and Mustang all become privy to just how far the reach of the homunculi is within Amestris. The rest of the novel is a major flashback to the Ishvalan Civil War. We know from previous volumes how the war started, but until this point, we have only been privy to snippets as characters try not to remember the slaughter they took part of. Hawkeye, never one to shield Edward or treat him like a kid, is finally the one to educate him on the horror of what they were asked to do as part of the military. We also learn a vital piece of Colonel Mustang's past, and it further explains the dynamic between Hawkeye and Mustang.

Since Ed and Alphonse, and by extension, the reader, know so much now about the corruption of the country and the truth behind the Philosopher Stones, this is a perfect time to launch into this complicated story of the Ishvalan Civil War. This event has been a driving force behind so much of the plot in the previous nine volumes that we are so familiar and yet so clueless as to what happened, just as Edward admits to being with Hawkeye. There is more violence and blood in this volume as we are talking about a war, but the blood is always understated in the drawing, looking more like dirt spots than gore.

While the subject matter in this one is pretty heavy, there are many parallels to draw between the Ishvalan Civil War and the extermination campaign of Nazi Germany. The operation the Amestrian military undertakes is even called the "Extermination" effort or mission. Any student who has studied World War II should be able to make these comparisons and have a deeper appreciation for the gravity of this event in the story.

Mild spoilers here.

"Hey if im a Doctor, why am I killing People?"
Its baerly possible to describe this Volume in a way, what serves it justice.
For me its one of the best Ark in Anime/Manga. And whit over 200 Anime, and Manga, I think I have an alright level of experience to say that.

The Writer Hiromi Arakawa stated, she interviewed many war Veterans for her Story, and this Part realy shows it.
War profeteer Countrys, who refuse Refugees Entry, Armstrongs PTSD, the mental State of the Soldier, Mustangs Scene whit his low ranking Subordinates, Kimbley calling them out, a Snipers Burden, Dr. Knoxes selfe hatred, the number of Children as Victims of the war, Ishval as proud Nation, able to defend themselfe, and so much more.
So much Charakter building, so many very realistic war Scenes, I have nothing but respect for her Work here.
The Line "A regular Soldier might fire his Weapon a few times randomly, and might hit someone by Accident, but Sniping is different. If you pull the Trigger, you know for sure someone will die"
Was a actual Quote someone said to her.

It might not the best analysis here, but I dont think I can write it down better then just by complimentimg it randomly. READ IT

Setelah sekian purnama mandek, akhirnya lanjut lagi.

At the end, they were thenger thenger bingung meh piyeee mbalekke awakke
