O καλλιτέχνης Darryl Cunningham είναι καλός δάσκαλος σε αυτό, καθώς με το πρόσφατο graphic novel του μας ταξιδεύει στα άδυτα της πολιτικής του δυτικού κόσμου και της χρηματοπιστωτικής κρίσης, ανιχνεύοντας τις ρίζες της οικονομικής κατάρρευσης στις πολιτικές των συντηρητικών κυβερνήσεων και στους ανθρώπους που τις δημιούργησαν.

Σχεδιάζει μάλιστα ένα συναρπαστικό πορτραίτο της Νέας Αμερικανικής Δεξιάς και της χαρισματικής φιλελευθερίστριας Άιν Ραντ, που υπήρξε μέντορας του Άλαν Γκρίνσπαν στα νεανικά του χρόνια. Δείχνει πώς οι Νεο-Συντηρητικοί σφετερίστηκαν τη δημόσια συζήτηση περί οικονομίας οδηγώντας τον κόσμο σε ένα καθεστώς κυριαρχίας των μη ρυθμισμένων αγορών, όπου οι φτωχοί, όπως πάντα, πληρώνουν για τα λάθη των πλουσίων – με καταστροφικά αποτελέσματα.

Για να είμαι ειλικρινής, δεν είχα ιδέα πως υπήρχε εκεί έξω ένα graphic novel όπως το Σύπερκραχ, πριν μάθω πως οι εκδόσεις Κριτική θα το φέρνανε στην Ελλάδα. Δίνω props και στο δημιουργό για τη σκέψη του να το δημιουργήσει και στην Κριτική για τη σκέψη του να το μεταφράσει για τη χώρα μας. Δεν είμαι σίγουρος όμως πως να κρίνω κάτι σαν κι αυτό.

Ναι, το σχέδιο του Darryl Cunningham δεν είναι ακριβώς του γούστου μου και η επιλογή της γραμματοσειράς με ενόχλησε σε όλη τη διάρκειά του βιβλίου [όχι πως στο πρωτότυπο είναι ιδιαίτερα καλύτερη] αλλά αισθάνομαι πως λίγη σημασία έχουν αυτά. Σημασία έχει το περιεχόμενο.

Το βιβλίο χωρίζεται σε 3 κομμάτια. Το πρώτο ασχολείται με τη ζωή και τα πιστεύω της Άυν Ραντ, το δεύτερο με το πως φτάσαμε στην πρόσφατη οικονομική κρίση και το τρίτο προσεγγίζει τις διαφορές αριστεράς και δεξιάς κάτω από μια λίγο πιο ψυχολογική και κοινωνική ματιά.

Η μίνι βιογραφία της Ραντ είναι ιδιαίτερα αξιόλογη. Συγκεντρώνει σε λιγότερες από 70 σελίδες όλες τις βασικές της αρχές και εξηγεί το πως έζησε τη ζωή της. Είναι μια καλή πρώτη γνωριμία με μια τόσο αμφιλεγόμενη προσωπικότητα και είναι μάλλον το πιο ενδιαφέρον τμήμα του graphic novel.

Στο υπόλοιπο βιβλίο, η επεξήγηση των μηχανισμών πίσω από την οικονομική κρίση και η σύγκριση των κοσμοθεωριών αριστεράς και δεξιάς γίνονται όσο πιο απλά και κατανοητά μπορούν. Το Σούπερκραχ δεν ξεφεύγει από τον στόχο του, έχει καθαρή εικόνα της κατάστασης και συγκεκριμένη άποψη. Ο Cunningham έχει γνώση των θεμάτων του και κάνει καλή δουλειά στο να τα παρουσιάσει μέσα από το έργο του.

Κι αυτό ίσως να είναι και το πρόβλημά του. Το βιβλίο μου άρεσε *κυρίως* επειδή συμφωνώ μαζί του. Η θέση και η οπτική με την οποία βλέπει τα πράγματα ταιριάζουν με τη δική μου και αυτός είναι ο βασικότερος λόγος που έφυγα ικανοποιημένος από το περιεχόμενό του. Αν εσείς δε συμμερίζεστε τις απόψεις του, τότε μάλλον δε θα αισθανθείτε το ίδιο με μένα.

Από μένα έχει ένα γεμάτο 3,5*/5, που φυσιολογικά θα γίνει 4*/5 στο Goodreads και νομίζω πως δε θα χάσει το χρόνο του όποιος του δώσει την ευκαιρία.

An utterly superb discussion of the rise of neo-liberalism, the cult of the free market and the damage that the concentration of wealth into fewer and fewer hands is doing to our society and environment.

I saw Cunningham speak at the Kendal Comic Arts Festival in October. I was struck by how he had educated himself on this subject, and how well his drawings convey really complex economic ideas to non-experts.

I absolutely, thoroughly recommend this book to anyone who wants to get a grip on the economic problems that we are all suffering at the moment.

Blij dat ik het heb gelezen, het heeft mij kennis en inzicht gegeven hoe het zo ontzettend mis kon (en kan) gaan in de financiële wereld, gesteund door de politiek.
En dat gebaseerd op een ideologie van een vrouw die in 1926 naar Amerika kwam vanuit Rusland, op haar 21e.
Nu ik dit heb gelezen snap ik de geest van het conservatisme én het verschil tussen conservatisme en progressivisme, dat wordt haarfijn in hoofdstuk 3 beschreven.
Het eerste deel van deze beeldroman gaat over haar en hoe ze zoveel invloed heeft, (ge)had.
Een boek over de financiële wereld lezen is niet direct wat mij aantrekt, maar omdat het beeldend is prettiger en begrijpelijker om te lezen. Ik vond het heel boeiend en niet taai.
Het is door een journalist geschreven én getekend, met kennis van zaken.
Joris Luyendijk zegt over dit boek; "Een niet te missen boek" en dat kan ik alleen maar onderschrijven.

Wichtiges und gut lesbares Buch.

Darryl Cunningham verwebt Ayn Rand Moralphilosophie des Objektivismus mit dem Finanzcrash der gierigen Banken 2008. Diese Gegenüberstellung zeigt, dass Ayn Rands Philosophie des Fokus auf den Individualismus und den freien Kapitalismus nicht die Utopie ist, die sie sich darstellt. Zumindest ist es eine Utopie, die letzten Endes durch den durchschnittlichen Steuerzahler "gerettet" werden konnte.

Eine politische und gesetzliche Aufarbeitung der Freiheiten von Bänken hätte nach dem Finanzcrash folgen sollen. Es ist eher das Gegenteil passiert. Lobbyismus und große Unternehmen beeinflussen Politiker. Aktuell herrscht eine Verbindung, von den die reichsten profitieren. Es ist lustig, wie bekannt ist, dass große Unternehmen wie Starbucks, Amazon, Google, Vodafone, und Apple von Steueroasen profitieren - also selbst nicht die eigentlich gesetzlich verpflichteten Steuerzahlen und dann aber Druck gemacht, dass nicht "Schmarotzer" Steuergelder klauen (S.218).

Es ist einfach zu gut... Wie manche Menschen Migranten oder Behinderten die Schuld geben und die Reichen klatschen sich in die Hände und sind fein raus. Es ist wichtig, dass die Gesetze für alle gelten und nicht eine "Extrawurst" gemacht wird für diejenigen, die mehr Geld und dadurch mehr Macht haben.

"Die Bankindsutrie hat in den USA dank einer Klausel im Gramm-Leachy-Billey Act von 1999 (auch bekannt als Gesetz zur Modernisierung des Finanzsystems) die Möglichkeit, sich massiv in der Realwirtschaft zu engagieren.

Die Klausel erlaubte Geschäftsbanken, aus der Finanzwelt hinauszutreten und Vermögenswerte zu erwerben, die ihr Kerngeschäft ergänzen, beispielsweise ein Reisemagazin zu kaufen, um die Kreditkartennutzung zu bewerben. Klingt harmlos, oder?

Ist es aber nicht. Die Banken und ihre Juristen haben diese Klausel auf eine Art ausgelegt, die weit über die bloße Verkaufsförderung hinausgeht. Heute besitzen Banken wie Morgan Stanley, J.P. Morgan Chase und Goldman Sachs Öltanker, betreiben Flughäfen und kontrollieren gewaltige Mengen an Kohle, Erdgas, Heizöl, Strom und Edelmetallen." (S.226f)

Der Dodd–Frank Act schränkte dieses Verhalten aber wieder stärker ein, 2018 hat allerdings Donald Trump diese Beschränkungen für viele Banken wieder aufgehoben. Banken dürfen seither zudem wieder mehr spekulative Aktivitäten betreiben. Q: https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dodd%E2...

Ich frage mich, wann wir Politiker wählen, die für die Menschen Gesetze machen und durchziehen und nicht für sich und ihre reichen Freunde. Von geringeren Sozialleistungen profitieren die meisten rechten Wähler nicht.

Ich fand aber die psychologie Analyse von "Konservativen" und "Progressiven" etwas far-fetched und einfach gedacht. Ich finde es kritisch, wenn man Menschen in einfache psychologische Modelle pressen will.

Every time I'd pick up this book and start reading, I'd feel a knot in my stomach and anger rising - it is so hard for me to comprehend how people are so power hungry and greedy that all they can think of is themselves. We definitely live in selfish times and the world is suffering for it. Ayn Rand's theory of objectivism is promoted by many, that is an egotistical society that does not care for the elderly, the less fortunate, the disabled or children - it does not believe in social welfare of any kind. The rich get richer by destroying everybody else! Just writing about it makes me sick!
If you want to understand why the global financial crisis happened this is the book to read. It's simple to understand, a graphic novel for those who don't like reading (though I wasn't impressed by graphics or their relevance at times) but the book's content is what matters, not the graphics.

Τα ευρώ μην τα σκορπάς, τα μαλλιά σου θα τραβάς. Έλληνα βαρυγκωμάς, έχεις γίνει φουκαράς!

Ήταν ένα πάρα πολύ ενδιαφέρον ανάγνωσμα, τολμώ να πω. Έκανε κατανοητή την όλη φιλοσοφία της δυτικής οικονομίας και της κλιμακωτής κατάρρευσής της. Γιατί αν μια πεταλούδα πετάξει στην Γουόλ Στριτ, μια τράπεζα θα καταρρεύσει στην Αθήνα.

Το γκράφικ νόβελ αναφέρεται μέχρι και στην κρίση του 2008 (και λίγο μετά). Θα μου άρεσε πολύ αν έβγαινε και Παρτ Του έκδοση που να περιέχει και τα πιο σύγχρονα οικονομικά "κατορθώματα" μας, εμάς των πολιτισμένων (γελάει_ο_κόσμος). Ειδικά με εκείνες τις ωραίες (νοτ) εποχές με τον αναβρασμό των ΔΝΤ, των μνημονίων, των κάπιταλ κοντρόλς, των P.I.G.S. (το θυμάστε αυτό;), της Άγκελας και της παρέας της, του μπρέξιτ, του κοβιντ κουλουπού. Πλάκα θα είχε!

Ενδιαφέρον!
Η ιστορία και η (ιδεολογική) προϊστορία της παγκόσμιας οικονομικής κρίσης του 2008 σε ένα graphic novel. Τα σκίτσα είναι αφαιρετικά, με γεωμετρικά σχήματα, επικεντρώνοντας το βλέμμα του αναγνώστη στο κείμενο και όχι στο σχέδιο.

Ο Ντάριλ Κάνινγκχαμ ξεκινάει με το πορτρέτο της Άυν Ραντ, για κάποιους την ιέρεια του ακραίου νεοφιλελευθερισμου. Μετανάστευσε από τη Ρωσία στις ΗΠΑ σε ηλικία 20 ετών, έχοντας βιώσει την Οκτωβριανή επανάσταση ως τραυματική εμπειρία. Μέσα από τα έργα της (βιβλία λογοτεχνίας, σενάρια για το σινεμά) υπερασπίστηκε τον ατομικισμό/εγωισμό ως κινητήρια δύναμη για τα πάντα. Ο χωρίς περιορισμούς καπιταλισμός, αποτελούσε για την ίδια τη μονη εγγύηση για ατομικά δικαιώματα. Η θεωρία της, του αντικειμενισμου, θυμίζει κάτι από αναρχοκαπιταλισμο. Το 1/3 του βιβλίου είναι αφιερωμένο στη Ραντ γιατί η θεωρία της θεμελιώνει την άποψη που χτίζει ο συγγραφέας, ότι δηλαδή ο καπιταλισμός χωρίς ηθική και χωρίς πέριορισμούς από το κράτος οδήγησε στο παγκόσμιο κραχ το 2008.
Σημειωτέον ότι η Ραντ ήταν μέντορας του Άλαν Γκρίνσπαν, προέδρου της FED όταν έσκασε η φούσκα του τραπεζικού τομέα στις ΗΠΑ (που είχε μεγαλώσει με τη βοήθειά του) .
Στο δεύτερο μέρος με τίτλο “Το κραχ” ο Κάνινγκχαμ παρουσιάζει ένα χρονικό χρηματοοικονομικής κρίσης με τους γνώριμους και απο την ελληνική κρίση πρωταγωνιστές - Standard and Poor’s, Moody’s, Fitch Ratings , Goldman Sachs- και εξηγεί με εξαιρετικά απλό και ευσύνοπτο τρόπο το πως η εποπτεία του κράτους στον τραπεζικό τομέα άρχισε να υποχωρεί και πως η απληστία των αγορών οδήγησε στην κρίση των ενυπόθηκων δανείων και την κατάρρευση. Ο Κανινγχαμ αφιερώνει και 12 καρέ στο ρόλο που έπαιξε η Goldman Sachs στη διαχείριση του ελληνικού χρέους, λίγο πριν το ξέσπασμα της κρίσης. Προφανώς το θέμα του δεν είναι η ελληνική κρίση η οποία επίσης προφανώς δεν εξηγείται μονοδιάστατα.
Στο τρίτο (και κατά τη γνώμη μου πιο αδύναμο) μέρος με τίτλο “Η εποχή του εγωϊσμού” προσπαθεί να σκιαγραφήσει το προφίλ του προοδευτικού και του συντηρητικού ανθρώπου, ωσάν αυτά τα χαρακτηριστικά να είναι περίπου γενετικά καθορισμένα και να μην αλλάζουν.
Παρουσιάζει την ανάδυση των νεοσυντηρητικών δυνάμεων στις ΗΠΑ φτάνοντας μέχρι το κόμμα του Τσαγιού, και στο αντίστοιχο βρετανικό UKIP του Φάρατζ , την κατάρρευση του κοινωνικού κράτους Ε.Ε. και το πως οι πολυεθνικές τη βγάζουν καθαρή φοροδιαφεύγοντας με νόμιμο τρόπο. Το φάντασμα της Ραντ επανέρχεται θριαμβευτικά, κι ο αναγνώστης νιώθει την ένταση να κορυφώνεται και τη θήλεια του νεοφιλελευθερισμού να σφίγγει, αλλά ο Κάνιγχαμ κλείνει με ένα αισιόδοξο μήνυμα:

“Είναι λάθος να νομίζουμε ότι οι τωρινές πολιτικές συνθήκες θα ισχύουν αιώνια. Πολλές φορές στο παρελθόν, κινήματα φτιαγμένα από ανθρώπους από όλα τα κοινωνικά στρώματα έχουν επιφέρει τεράστιες αλλαγές. Δίχως αυτές τις εκστρατείες, δεν θα υπήρχε δημόσια εκπαίδευση για όλους, δεν θα θεσπίζονταν νόμοι για την παιδική εργασία ή την προστασία του περιβάλλοντος, ούτε για τη γυναικεία χειραφέτηση. Στις νότιες πολιτείες των ΗΠΑ δεν θα είχε καταργηθεί ο φυλετικός διαχωρισμός. Η δουλεία θα συνεχιζόταν. Ολα αυτά τα κινήματα συνάντησαν απίστευτες αντιστάσεις σε εποχές όπου φαινόταν σίγουρο πως τίποτα δεν θα άλλαζε ποτέ. Τόσο δυνατά ήταν τα συμφέροντα εναντίον τους. Κι όμως στο τέλος τα κατάφεραν…

Supercrash is a comic about finance… sounds boring… Well itis not! Supercrach dissect the economic collapse of 2008 and give a detailed foundation of understanding the crises, but also give an insight to the twisted world of global finance. The simple art and the complex text work really well together and are easy to understand. In the back of the book, there is also a glossary of geeky finance words. Overall a must read, if you like left wing comics. You don’t hate Mondays you hate capitalism.

This is actually three quite different 'stories' combined that were somewhat loosely connected thematically. The first was a biography of Ayn Rand, which the author disparaged as a selfish, lonely and harsh woman. We see how her philosophy of individualism and anti-government paved the way for the neoliberal economic policies of Alan Greenspan that ultimately resulted in the Global Financial Crisis of 2008 as the subprime mortgage crisis unfolded. These events were the focus of the second part of the graphic novel, and for those not familiar with financial terminology and theories a very sound overview of what happened exactly and how banks were complicit in every instance. The injustice of the subsequent bailouts from the governments that let these financial criminals get away scot-free but left the vast majority of the public to bear the cost, created a broader discussion of political ideologies in the final part.

The drawings were so-so, and this read more like a short non-fiction book with graphical embellishment than a true comic. There were many panels of repeated/identical pictures with dense text captions. Admittedly the subject of financial shenanigans and politics are not easy to bring alive with illustrations, most of it being drawings of talking figures and buildings. This did not work well as a graphic novel, but for explaining the subject matter in a clear and very understandable manner the book succeeds.

This was quite uneven. The first third was a life history of Ayn Rand, for some reason. The last third was some kind dissertation on why the left/right political divide exists. Only the middle third was actually about the financial crash, and it predictably made me hate everybody. I wish the whole book had been the middle third.

Son zamanlarda okuduğum en etkiliyici grafik roman: Büyük çöküş.
Ekonomi, küresel ekonomi, serbest piyasa, krizler...Bu tür iktisadi konulardan genelde pek anlamam. Ancak bu grafik romanda o kadar akıcı, net ve anlaşılır anlatmış ki Darryl Cunningham, hayran oldum. Açıkçası okuyunca insan gerçekten kapitalist sistemin aç gözlülüğünden nefret ediyor. Çok ilginç bir şekilde kitap Ayn Rand ile başlıyor. Ayn Rand 'ın bireyci, bencil, seçkinci ve serbest ekonomiyi şiddetle destekleyen kişilik özelliklerini biliyordum ama gerek Amerika gerekse de dünya ekonomisi üzerine bu kadar etkisinin olduğunu asla tahmin etmezdim. Meşhur Alan Greenspan'in bile akıl hocası imiş Ayn Rand.. Bu ilk bölüm cidden ilginç..Sonraki bölümde de 2008 emlak krizine giden yolda bankaların, kredi kuruluşlarının üçkağıtları, sömürü taktikleri anlatılıyor. Ve daha sonra patlak veren kriz. Hırsın ve aç gözlülüğün sınırı yok. Bedel ise hep olduğu üzere çalışan, vergi verenlerce ödeniyor. Yani bizler tarafından.."Kâr kasanın, zarar ise vergi mükelleflerinin..Peki yaşadığımız bu hayat kimin?" ..Defalarca okunabilecek bir kitap..

Third graphic novel book group of 2021.

But is this a graphic novel? One thing I am pretty militant about at graphic novel book group is analysing what we read in those terms - how does this work as a graphic novel? The artform lends itself to a wide range of topics, including non-narrative and non-fiction ones, but these run a greater risk of failing as graphic novels.

Supercrash doesn't work as a graphic novel for me. The first section, the life of Ayn Rand, is the most successful, but lacks the immersive flair and capacity for insight which other biographical graphic novels have (it is less good than Red Rosa which was January's group book, for example).

The second and third sections don't even achieve this. They read more like illustrated Twitter threads. While the content is interesting, it just doesn't feel like reading a graphic novel. The repetitive presentation would work better in a series of short reads (I read this in two sittings), and it is already out of date insofar as it dates from 2014 and hoo-boy has a lot happened in economics and rightwing populism since 2014.

Overall, it would work as a primer and introduction to the topics of economic collapse and rightwing thinking if consumed in smaller doses. But it's not a graphic novel to me.

The first two parts are great, nice introduction to the topics without too much simplification.

The third part got a bit polemical _and_ centrist for my taste. I'm not sure how well supported the stuff about brain differences between conservatives and "liberals" are, but it's interesting.

There's a weird argument which really turned me off the book quite significantly when it suggested that there was a rise in crime since the 60s could be somewhat attributed to counterculture: that people were too individualistic until the 90s when conservative values came back and made crime drop again????? Doesn't talk at all about maybe economic fluctuations during this time?

And additionally there's an almost throwaway thing that upset me: in talking about bank deregulation tha author mentions how "banks purchasing a travel magazine to promote credit cards seems harmless" and... No? Not at all?

A book that stirs up your feelings. The feelings towards the simplicity and stupidity of the society. How ordinary people are lead to believe in the conservative right and be fooled by incomplete and false propaganda.
The book shows many of the bad sides of the conservative right and the selfishness that has grown so strong. That doesn't need to mean that you should lean into the the opposite. But you should be aware facts that are hidden to the public.
The book explains both Ayn Rands philosophy and what happened to the global economy because of crazy people in leading positions the fully believed and followed Ayn's philosophy...

Starts telling the story of Ayn Rand as a philosophical preamble to the economic crisis of 2008.

The last chapter explaining the differences in behaviour between liberal and conservative people is very good to understand the minds on each side of the political spectrum.

The book is good in general, but I think it focused too much on blaming the greed of the banks and displaying the problems of a free market. Even if the crisis was because of these reasons, I ended up feeling like I was being presented a biased point of view, not an impartial one.

Undoubtedly, this book grew an interest on me to learn more about the 2008 crisis!

Τονίζει τα λάθη του χρηματοπιστωτικου συστήματος, την έλλειψη κρατικης παρέμβασης για την ρύθμιση της αγοράς και αναλύει ιστορικά πως καταλήξαμε στο κραχ του 2008. Αξίζει την προσοχή σας για πράγματα τα οποία έχουν ειπωθεί αλλά είναι ταμπού να μιλάμε ιδίως στην συντηρητική ελληνική κοινωνία. Θα μπορούσα να πω ότι περιγράφει τον αναρχοκαπιταλισμο σε ολο του το μεγαλείο και τις επιπτώσεις του. Επίσης προτείνω να δείτε και την ταινία Network..

Riveting & eye-opening! Using the medium of comic strips, the author deftly delivers the outrageous facts and context behind the 2008 financial crash, it's beginnings in the theories and influence of Ayn Rand and her objectivists, and the systematic hijacking of the economic and political world since. Most presciently, the division between left and right wing is brilliantly explained, using succinct captions and poignant illustrations. A must-read explainer for the world we find ourselves in today.

A helpful exploration of the causes of the financial crash and how these key factors - Ayn Rand's philosophy, the desire for a small state, limits on government regulation, etc. - continue to influence the world. At the time of the crash I was studying philosophy and friends with economists and following the news, so I thought I understood it fairly well, but still learned some things from this, including about the details of financial structures in the USA and how different elements of the situation were connected.

I was pleasantly surprised by this graphic novel – I have heard of Ayn Rand and her political theory before, but the concise and well-streamlined narrative of this publication gave me a bigger insight.

It is definitely an interesting read from the perspective of time. Especially, if you take into consideration some of the comments made about the UK system at the time, and how it changes.

Informative overview of Ayn Rand's philosophy, the complicated, immoral financial moves that caused the 2008 crash and the rise of neoliberalism. I was not aware of the absolute disaster the UK's austerity measures had on the disabled. Disgusting behaviour all around.

Darryl Cunninghams books always stay with me. He manages to communicate complex and complicated subject matter in easy to follow comics. Even though this was first published in 2014 it is still relevant (maybe even more so) today.
