Rick has struggled all his life. Under Alpha Erskine, he was forced to take his deceased father’s place in the inner circle. While part of that circle he saw things that he wished he could forget. He is used to being abused and derided for both his position and his stutter. He holds no hope that his life will change under the new alpha. His only desire is to live in the shadows and hide as best he can.
Cole is on the council, but he does not like to stay in one place for long. His mind changes when he finds his mate, Rick. He knows Rick has not had an easy life and Cole will have a hard time convincing Rick to give everything a chance, but he is determined. Then Rick finds Cole’s presence is threatened and he will have to fight for his mate.
Your heart will go out to Rick. Abused for a long time at the hands of his old alpha, Rick is a shadow of what he could be. Cole is an incredible mate for Rick and just what he needs. Exhibiting a lot of patience, Cole is determined to break down Rick’s barriers, but it takes time. Time could be running out as they are forced to fight for a successful mating. Good book but it progressed a bit differently than expected. Rick has been abused his whole life and dreamed of finding his mate and experiencing unconditional love for the first time. But when he does meet his mate he can't quite get with the program. He holds Cole back and makes him jump through hoops. Cole's patience is freaking God like! It was even a bit ridiculous at times. I know that not every mating story can be wham bam thank you sam and I love you... but poor Cole waited months for a freaking kiss!!! There were times when I felt like rick should be called on his behavior when he would say or do something hurtful to Cole, like saying he wanted seperate rooms in their house...wtf? I think the book would have been a 5 star if Cole had expressed his hurt and maybe walked away a time or 2 and made rick come to him.

Kameron quickly figured out that one of the inner circle, Rick, hadn't wanted anything to do with the horrible things the old alpha had done, but the pack judged him as guilty as the rest. Rick's inability to hurt others had left him as vulnerable as the pack getting verbally and physically abused. All this left him terribly frightened and withdrawn until Cole arrived. Cole's life as a wander suited him well until he met his mate Rick changing everything. Cole's rough and tough exterior hid a loving a gentle soul and he would need all his patience and love to help Rick overcome his abusive past. Rick's terrible past made it difficult for him to open up and trust, but with Cole and the Gillham Packs support he may have a chance. It was inspiring how when Cole needed him Rick stepped up to the task without hesitation proving that he may be finally ready to look towards the future. This was an inspiring story about how the power of love can overcome anything.

This was so sweet and lovely to read. I loved Rick and I thought that Cole was so sweet towards him, and I love that they took their time.
One thing that did distract me from the writing (and maybe the author will see this?) but when Rick had a bad time stuttering words that started with letter "L" it appeared as a number "1" on my kindle version, so it looked like "1-1-1-leave" instead of the letter "L" being the stutter. I don't know if that was some weird auto-correct on my version, but that happened several times throughout the story.
I love this series, I love how it flows so well with her other series, and I'm always looking forward to more! You don't have to have read the previous stories, but I feel like it means more when you have, since there are so many characters from previous stories included. Can't wait for more!

Reviewed for Prism Book Alliance
There is a definite theme to the Whitedell Pride and Gillham Pack books by Catherine Lievens. They are about fated mates who face roadblocks to their mating. Usually, one mate is all for the mating, and one is not for whatever reason. The other theme common in these two series is mates you don't necessarily expect.

Sweet romance
I enjoyed this sweet story about Rick, a werewolf shifter who had been abused and was very fearful, and Cole, a very patient and understanding bear shifter. This was definitely a very sweet story.
