Killer Temptation

Rate this book
This assignment in Fiji was supposed to be Zoë Conrad's ticket to a new life of excitement and adventure. But immediately stumbling over a body was a whole lot more excitement than she'd bargained for.

Then the dead man turned out to be very much alive— and she found herself giving in, almost against her will, to his slow, sensual seduction. And yet…millionaire hotel owner Sean "Breeze" Guthrie's killer smile couldn't quite conceal the darkness in his eyes. Was he really capable of the crimes he was accused of? Was she falling— and falling hard—for a murderer?

Both revolting and ridiculous in equal measure, this romance is quite the exercise in what-the-fuckery! Zoe Conrad works for Smart Traveler, where she evaluates various hotels. Her assignment is the Indigo Inn in Fiji. Upon arrival, she finds a dead man in a hammock!

Oh, wait. Not dead. Just bone tired. After a bizarre encounter which ends with him groping her, she assumes he's the gardener, and he introduces himself as Breeze. As a matter of fact, he's actually Sean Guthrie, the owner of Indigo Inn! He doesn't correct her assumptions. It leads to this utterly bizarre sequence where her dress is covered in Bloody Mary (Sean is covered in it too, which is why she thought he was dead), and they return to the inn. He takes her clothes to wash them, and throws his own in the washing machine with them, leaving him naked. (He doesn't wear underwear.)

He realises he has forgotten to leave the complimentary champagne in Zoe's room, so Sean just heads there naked (it's apparently too risky to head out to his boathouse despite the fact Zoe is showering), and drops it off. Right when Zoe emerges from the shower. I imagine the author thought it was comical, but I just felt nauseated. Imagine emerging from your shower to find a naked man in your room! And Zoe just brushes it off!!!!

Because she's secretly attracted to him, of course.

Sean's actions towards Zoe continue to reek more of sexual harassment and assault than actual romance (copping a feel of her butt in a thong while carrying her back to the hotel), before the plot finally kicks into gear. Sean is arrested for the murder of a couple that he had previously had an argument with, accusing them of stealing one of his yachts. Realising the police are eager to arrest him to prevent harm to the island's tourism industry, Sean must find the killer himself. Zoe agrees to help, obviously because his magic penis has made her forget Sean is several levels of slimy. They believe the victims were actually the latest work of a serial killer circling the South Pacific islands, targeting amorous couples.

From there, it's more sex than plot. Zoe just can't keep her clothes on! They're doing it everywhere! This reaches its nadir when they're searching for the missing yacht - while Zoe is naked because Sean has refused to let her wear any clothing (!!!) and they're underwater, and they see a shark. Zoe freaks out, at which point Sean starts having sex with her.

THEY ARE BEING CIRCLED BY A SHARK UNDER WATER AND THEY START HAVING SEX.

What. The. Fuck.

Sure, it just turns out to be a harmless grey nurse shark, but poor Zoe didn't know that, and seriously....WHO THE F*** WOULD HAVE SEX WHEN YOU'RE RIGHT NEXT TO A SHARK???????

Really? Who???

This was just too stupid to be believed. Its sheer what-the-fuckery actually lifted its rating from one star to two. I just couldn't believe someone would write some of the stuff in here, much less have it get past an editor and get published!

Having sex while being circled by a shark? Just when I think I've read everything...

This is part of a mini-series. The serial killer subplot is not resolved here. I can't say I'll be searching out the other two books for a resolution!

An eye-rolling plot, laughable leaps of logic, an ingenue who can't keep her clothes on and a romantic hero who doesn't know the meaning of foreplay. Welcome to the world of "Killer Temptation" by Nina Bruhns. Nina, Nina, NINA!!! What were you thinking?! I've read fanfic that's better than this! Lucky for me, I read Ms. Bruhns's "Passion For Danger" series first, otherwise I'd think this amateurish and utterly "meh" offering was indicative of her writing prowess. (Its single saving grace is that it's only 219 pages long.)

My advice? Forgo "Killer Temptation"...It'll only kill your desire to read another book by Nina Bruhns. Instead, pick up something more substantial from her "Passion For Danger" or "Men In Uniform" series.

Book 1 of the exciting SRS mini-series SEDUCTION SUMMER

Fiji is gorgeous.
Everything about the Indigo Inn is perfect, absolutely perfect.
Except for the dead guy in the hammock…

Sean Guthrie desperately needs to get a five-star rating for his new business venture, an idyllic bed and breakfast on the South Seas island paradise of Fiji. His fate is in the hands of a beautiful, starry-eyed guidebook evaluator for whom he feels a powerful and inopportune attraction. Can you say blackmail? Unfortunately, from the moment Zoë Conrad steps off the plane, one thing after another goes terribly wrong. The mysterious disappearance of a yacht, vocal feuding native families, Sean’s untimely arrest… Oh, yeah. And there’s a serial killer on the loose. How can she in good conscience give this disaster area a five-star rating?

Except something about the charming, commitment-phobic owner draws Zoë into his escalating woes, wanting to help. And also into wanting the man himself…. But Sean seems as determined to ignore their blossoming relationship as he is to solve the spiraling mysteries that beset his remote inn. Until a romantic interlude of sex on the beach turns to vicious murder.

This review contains spoilers. I have read Nina Bruhns before and enjoyed her work but “Killer Temptation” seems to be lacking a certain spirit overall. Kind of like a soda that has gone flat. The premise of the story is good and characters are well defined, it just seemed there was no spark in the story overall. I’ll still continue to watch for future works and "Blue Jeans and a Badge" is one of my favs!
