It’s been over 60 years since the familiar dum-di-dum-didum- di-dum of ‘Barwick Green’ first brought The Archers to our airwaves, and in that time millions of listeners have followed the everyday lives of country folk in Ambridge. This new companion, which brings together facts and trivia about characters, controversies and country customs in one handy volume, will delight avid addicts and keen newbies alike.
Brilliant introduction to the Ambridge universe for a novice like me. Packed with entertaining anecdotes and back stories of characters past and present, this engaging and informative guide should please the seasoned listener as well as the as yet uninitiated.
I got the same excitement and joy from owning this beautifully written book as I did an annual for my favourite comic book as a child. It has the same feel for me. I can pick it up and read from anywhere in the book. Every time I find something new. One day I might find I have read all of it but the joy is, I probably won't as I will be surprised again.
There is so much information in here. I thought I knew a lot about The Archers having listened to it for most of my life. The soundtrack brings back happy memories of my mother in her kitchen. I was mistaken.
The quizzes, memorable moments, character profiles, and listener portraits make this book a joy to read. I love it.
"Covering the farms, families, deaths, dramas, animals and community antics, this book is a trip down a country memory lane and a delightful compendium of facts and folics of Archers life." (18)
I would like to thank Beth Miller for providing me a copy of this book!
As I have never heard Archers, I still really enjoyed this book! I can see how fans would love all the facts and the education in this book! It was very well written, and still made sense without any knowledge of the show.
This book was a quick read, as I read it in a couple of hours!
I can't believe I've been listening to The Archers for 12 years!
This is a great collection. It's kind of like the official website, but in a more appealing, reference format. I liked the organization of the sections and enjoyed learning about the olden days. This was from 2017, so it was missing a few modern details, but that's to be expected. I'd knock half a star for a few typos (and one time when it seemed like an entire bullet point was missing), but overall really well done.
I'm a relatively new fan of The Archers, having only started listening in 2016 at the climax of the Helen and Rob saga so this was a fun way to swot up on the history of the show and its characters. It was an interesting guide, although I'd have liked more in depth pieces about specific storylines, rather than say a list of weddings which was pretty dry to read.
If you're an Archers fan then this is a little gem! As I'm a relatively new listener (20 plus years) then I did have a few revelatory moments with some unknown facts. (I admit starting this a couple of days ago...)
