"I must confess that I have read all of Jane Austen's books"
He couldn't help but frown. "Then you have probably acquired high expectations that no mortal man can ever hope to live up to."

His Scandalous Kiss by Sophie Barnes was surprisingly Gothic, which was something I hadn't expected. It has all the right ingredients:
Thornhill Manor, secrets hinting at espionage and conspiracy, a masquerade, a secret romance and most importantly a ghost, in this case figuratively.

Richard and Mary meet at a masquerade ball at Thornhill, Mary only knows Richard as Signor Antonio and Richard only knows Mary as Lady Eleanor. Both hold incredible secrets, in Mary's case hers would ruin her and in Richards case his would send shockwaves through the ton. They begin a secrets affair which includes secrets rendevouz and exploring a hidden Villa in the manor.

This story was somewhat refreshing in that Mary was quite an independent woman compared to the Historical heroines I normally read about, her secret allowed her independence even though she gave the illusion of being a perfect lady. Her aspirations were also quite progressive, she wished to marry for love and even contemplated never marrying which if done so as a choice would have been quite scandalous.

As fond as I am of rakes and rogues, I'm going to be quote honest and say that I was a little disappointed that Richard was a perfect gentleman. It was actually quite sweet, but I will say that I did want a bit more conflict when it came to Richard and Mary's romance. They quickly overcame the initial hurdle and it was smooth sailing despite it being done in secret. Even the second attempt at a hurdle was quickly squashed and I do so love long and drawn out angst which unfortunately was not present in this book.

"You are the light to which I am drawn."
"And you are the darkness that lets me shine," she whispered. His mask was cool against the side of her neck, but his body was all heat, cascading through her and making her want things she'd never wanted before.
"I cannot seem to escape you."

The secondary story which was in fact the secrets about Thornhills past was quite interesting although I do feel like it would have been better had I read the previous books in the series. Ultimately I think my 3 star rating is based on the romance in the story, it lacked intensity and passion. I think it might be my fault though because I rarely read clean historical romance.

This book started off at the same high rating as book 1 and way better than my 2 star rating of book 2. However, NOTHING HAPPENED in the later end of the book and the author did not explore the characters more with the angst. Our hero is scarred and feels like he doesn't deserve love or a normal life. Our heroine is almost forced into a betrothal to a man she has no interest in. They meet at a masquerade ball and she falls for him and not his face. They have an attraction for each other but that's not emphasized aside from her brothers stupid gambling habits. And then it was annoying because her brothers past got between these two people and then it was quickly fixed with an apology. also, I did not like the pacing. I thought it was weird at how fast they liked each other, resolved issues, and got married really quickly.

However the ending is interesting and quickly picks up in pace!!! So I'll bump it up to a 4 stars LMFAOOOOOOOOO

I adore Historical Romances. Why? Because they really do bring the romance back. No, there’s not any explicit, hot, sweaty sex. What there is is a bit of mystery, a ton of romancing and a whole lot of love.

Sophie Barnes really pulled out all the stoppers with His Scandalous Kiss. And, as we learned the truth about both Lady Mary and Richard Heartly, about the secrets they have both been hiding, you can’t help but hope that all works out well for them. Because, when everything and everyone is revealed, it could mean the ruin of Lady Mary and the end of what Richard thought would be the beginning of the rest of his life.

The writing in this story really made me feel like I was back in the era of Masquerade Balls, walks in the garden, picnics on the lake. It made me yearn for simpler times when being entertained was with music, reading or talking and not computers or cell phones. You knew who the good people were and who were just out for revenge. You knew who was going to be the back-stabber, who was going to try to bring ruin to Lady Mary But, what you didn’t know is who Richard brought down and how that was going to affect his budding relationship with the one woman who saw him for who is was and not what he looked like.

I fell in love with Richard. Yes, he was mysterious and had nothing but revenge on his mind. But, he was truly romantic and loving. He knew that Mary was special when he first laid eyes on her but did not think that she would ever be interested in a man like him. He was almost a recluse because of his injuries. She saw right through to the heart of the man and he, in turn, decided that she was definitely worth facing the public and the ton again.

Mary had her own mystery around her. She was a caring person with a passion for Opera. She knew that her secret, if it came to light, would ruin her whole family. She also had no choice but to continue since her brother could not handle the responsibilities of running the estate. Until everything comes to a head and she has to decide who she loves more … her brother or Richard.

There is also another mystery that still has not been solved and I am really looking forward to finding out what it is all about. Thorncliff Manor is a really interesting place and I am sorry that I haven’t read the other stories leading up to His Scandalous Kiss. The good thing is that it can definitely be read as a stand-alone and you won’t be lost in the least … you would have just missed all the other weddings leading up to this story. So, Ms. Barnes really has me interested in finding out just what did go on down in the tunnels and the secret rooms. With that said, I will really be looking forward to reading the rest of the Secrets of Thorncliff Manor and enjoying the wonder writings of Sophie Barnes.

I'm going to be honest. I had to quit reading. And I don't DO that. I was 250 pages in and just couldn't see it through to the end. It.was.so.boring.

Before I even start this review, I have a confession: I'm a quitter. I quit reading books I'm not enjoying because I have so many others to read. And I've also never been one of those readers that can force myself to read something I don't find interesting (lots of literature assignments were left unread in high school and college, let me tell you).

I previously read Lady Sarah's Sinful Desires and was rather underwhelmed. It wasn't necessarily bad, but the secret wasn't all that exciting and neither was the book. For that reason, I skipped The Earl's Complete Surrender altogether. Sophie Barnes is not a go to author for me by any means and I didn't feel any loss at not reading that second book. I don't feel like you have to read the first two books in the series to know what's going on in this one, which was nice. Sarah and Spencer (Lady Sarah's Sinful Desires) make appearances but all you really need to know (at least to the point I read to) is that they were in the first book.

I expected this book to be more of a Beauty and the Beast trope than Phantom of the Opera. Once I realized that, I decided to give it a go anyway because I have no experience whatsoever with the latter. Frankly, Richard just wasn't grouchy enough for my tastes. And so we come to probably my biggest issue with this book; the main conflict was external, and not overly interesting. Richard and Mary come to like each other almost immediately and the only things really keeping them apart are problems from the outside world. I personally prefer for my hero and heroine to not like each other much until they just can't deny their attraction anymore. Without that internal conflict, there's just not much to keep me reading. I finally gave up on page 186.

So incredibly boring. Yes, I complain about lolzy plot-pausing sex in the crop of newer Avons...but not this time. Instead I found myself wishing they would do the nasty & relieve such endless tedium of Nothing Happening. Damp fingers & raging boners would have been welcomed with open arms. Yikes.

Seriously, the first 154 pages consisted of nothing except conversations. Oh, & finding a cave with a diary in it. Yup. That's it. And if I had to read one more dialogue re: the hero...Richard, I think his name was?...burbling about his scarred face & nebulous plans for revenge, the book would have flown. STFU & SHOW ME PLOT PROGRESSION. There's no reason a Phantom of the Opera homage should be so dull.

In short: zzzz.

I grabbed this audiobook from the library on a whim, and ended up enjoying it quite a bit, despite never having read a book by this author previously. However, this regency romance was quite a bit tamer than most of those I've read recently. And it is is the THIRD book featuring a battle-scarred/injured hero that I've read in as many weeks, though not my favorite. (Tessa Dare reigns supreme again.) Usually when I read these novels, some type of illicit affair happens as a precursor to obtaining a special license to be wed, but everything in this romance was above board. Well, for the most part. ;0)

A light and fluffy take on a gothic romance. And if that doesn't confuse you, then it should. Because this was too fluffy to be gothic and too gothic to be fluffy. All the drama and angst resolved way too easily and there wasn't enough conflict to make the set-up feel worth it.

Honestly Historical Romances aren't really my go to novels but when I read the blurb for His Scandalous Kiss I was definitely intrigued and wanted to give it a try. Once I started I was quickly wrapped up in the world Barnes created and really wanted to know all the secrets of Thorncliff Manor.

Since I didn't read the previous books in this series I wasn't sure what to expect but I loved how the story starts off with a Masquerade Ball and provided in great detail the scenery. I really felt as if I was there alongside Richard and Lady Mary which was a plus for me.

Richard has been back from war and hidden away for five years. He is consumed with revenge and carries scars that he doesn't want anyone to see. The ball is the perfect way for him to step back into society without anyone knowing it's actually him including members of his family. Richard sees a young woman who is dressed simpler then the rest with her lovely locks down and is intrigued by her but getting to know her will be impossible for he doesn't believe anyone can look past his scars.

Mary has no desire to get married and wants to live her life on her own terms. She is kind, generous and has some secrets of her own she doesn't want to share but after meeting "Signor Antonio" she feels a deep a connection to him and enjoys his company. With stolen moments she gets to know him better and secrets begin to reveal themselves but one of Mary's suitors will stop at nothing to claim or destroy her reputation.

This story had remarkable details and interesting plot and took me on journey to the past where two people had secrets but found an everlasting love. I couldn't turn the pages fast enough as details started to come together. It was one of those stories that I needed to know how it would all come together.

Mary and Richard were a fairy tale dream couple who started out as strangers and made their way to friends to quickly falling for one another. In every interaction I felt their chemistry and loyalty to one another. Even when the times got a little tough I loved the devotion they both had and just knew this was a couple who would make it in the long run.

From what it looks like the mysteries of Thorncliff Manor will be coming to the surface in the next story and for once I can't wait to read a historical romance. Since reading His Scandalous Kiss I am invested in finding out the conclusion but in order to do that I need to go back to the very beginning. I am excited to say Barnes has a new fan and I'm looking forward to reading her future books.

If you're looking for a beautiful love story that has mystery, secrets and a HEA that will win your heart, His Scandalous Kiss is a recommended read.

House parties and matchmaking abound at Thorncliff Manor, where its guests inevitably find themselves embroiled in a search for evidence of a secret societies. This story is follows the same vein, but gives us new and unique characters to refresh a familiar plot line.

Five years ago Richard Heartly came home from fighting the war against France a different man. In his mind, he was so changed that he thought it better if society continued to think he was dead, so he has been living as a celibate hermit. He even refuses to see his family except for his father and brother, Spencer (from Lady Sarah's Sinful Desires). Richard has come to Thorncliff with his family, but he stays hidden away in his room. He finally ventures on the night of a masquerade as a favor to Lady Duncaster, the eccentric widow and owner of Thorncliff Manor. That is where he sees an enchanting lady in disguise.

Lady Mary Cartwright intends to avoid marriage as she doesn't believe a husband would allow her to continue her secret hobby/profession. She has also been helping her ne'er do well brother, Lord Cartwright, who seems to be gambling his inheritance away. Unfortunately for Mary, her aunt is determined to marry her off before they leave Thorncliff, and said aunt does not approve of the mysterious masked man at the masquerade.

I enjoyed watching Richard and Mary get to know one another, particularly as Richard stayed masked so Mary was forced to get to know him as a person without being distracted by his good looks (or lack thereof). I think wearing the mask also helped Richard to relax and be himself with Mary instead of being self-concious about his scars. Richard is one of my favorite types of heroes - a little broken and broody, but he's just waiting for that one person who can draw him out of his comfort zone to see that life is worth living. This is a clean romance, so don't expect more than kisses to be traded between our characters.

There are a couple of side plots going involving Richard's vengeance and the secrets at Thorncliff. Richard's vengeance became predictable as we read, but I don't think that detracted from the plot. We could see the obstacle coming and the dread added an anxiety element to the reading experience. The exploration of Thorncliff and its secrets in this installment was really cool. I don't want to say anything about it because I think its best discovered by the individual... but I really enjoyed this aspect of the story. I do wish that it would have been tied in better with the previous stories, but it was entertaining all the same.

I received an advanced copy of this book from Avon via Edelweiss in exchange for an honest review. 4 stars / 1 flame. Full review posted at Bambi Unbridled.

Another amazing addition to the Secrets at Thorncliff Manor by Sophie Barnes.

This is the story of an honorable gentleman and soldier. Richard Heartly hides himself away from Society and his family because of the scars he received during the war.. Everyone but his family thinks he is dead so that he can get his revenge by ruining the man who betrayed him.. He is so close to his goal when he meets a young lady at Thorncliff Manor that makes him question the life he has chosen to live.

Mary is taking a moment away from the noise and crush of people in Thorncliff Manor's ballroom. She is unaware of the man watching her from the shadows. She is at the Manor with her Aunt who is determined to find her a husband. Mary knows that is is impossible for her to marry because she has a secret that could ruin her whole family. When she spots the man in the mask watching her she is at first startled until she realizes there is something about him and invites him to sit with her and listen to the music. Oh did I forget to tell you, this is a Masquerade Ball and they are both wearing masks.

They both are drawn to each other and start meeting in secret, but Richard still hasn't revealed his idenity or his face. He is afraid that Mary will be horrifed by his scars and not want to be with him. But he has underestimated Mary's feelings and the lengths she will go to win Richard's heart.

There are so many layers to this story. More than one Villan, a mysterious underground Roman Villa, and intriguing secondary characters that hopefully will have their own books.

Sophie wrties a beautiful love story that is filled with the emtional peaks and valleys that draw you in to the story till the very last word. Her historical research is evident in all of her books mixed with her own version of some of the events and characters that make this a fascinating and compelling read. It always amazes me how much history I learn when I read Sophies books.

I am a big fan of her writing and recommend this book. You will love it.

Okay. This was a cute story!

No blatant sex if you don't like that.

But the kiss was not really scandalous.... so... false advertising? But a unique story based on a real Opera Singer!

Honestly the storyline was good, but they added additional information that was mostly unnecessary for this story but it built up for the following book which I don't plan on reading. It kept me entertained but I was disappointed because they built up so much sexual tension and then when you finally expect some spicy action but it's just "they joined together and it was like golden rays of sunshine".. like what? 😅

I have just recently gotten into this genre. I don't know why I always stayed away from it, because I'm loving it! That being said, I haven't read the previous books in this series. I still went ahead in reading this book because it's a different couple and let me tell you it's such a cute and shippable couple!

"You are the light to which I am drawn."
"And you are the darkness that lets me shine."

The story starts off at a masquerade ball, which I was immediately attracted to. Everything is described until the last detail! I love these type of balls in books, so getting a vivid description as if I was attending made it all the better for me.

We get introduced to Richard, who has returned from the war and has been hiding for five years. He has physical scars on his face that he doesn't want anyone to see so he shies away from any public appearance. Since it was required to wear a mask, Richard attends the ball and there he meets the lovely and elegant Mary. He knows he should stay away if he doesn't want her noticing his scars but he's so attracted to her finesse and her simplicity.

Mary is completely fine being single and is in no rush to get married. Her opinions start to change when she meets "Signor Antonio" (Richard). Even when her aunt prohibits her from meeting someone they don't know, Mary goes behind her back and meets in secret with Richard.

"I have always favored my own company, for it allows me the peace and quiet that my soul seems to crave."

I loved the message of this book: accepting oneself. Richard has spent the five years hiding, but Mary starts to change that. She starts to dig in deep and Richard slowly comes out of his shell. Richard starts to accept himself and he realizes that his scars aren't all that bad as he made them out to be. Mary and Richard both have well-kept secrets but their love for each other is so strong that it can overcome anything. I really enjoyed reading about their secret meetings. I would feel so giddy every time they would meet. Richard was a gentleman through-and-through. I was enthralled by his persona from the start until the end.

Also, this story has a little bit of mystery added to it that I wasn't fully aware of when I found out about this series. Knowing what I know now, I need to read the previous books because I'm intrigued to find out how everything unravels in the following book(s).

Overall,  His Scandalous Kiss is a cute and mysterious Historical Romance that will have readers completely won over with the romance and the mystery behind Thorncliff Manor.

His Scandalous Kiss is the third book in the 'Secrets at Thorncliff Manor' series by Sophie Barnes. I haven't had the pleasure of reading the first two books in the series, but after reading this one, I am definitely going to remedy that. Suffice to say though that this book can easily be read and enjoyed without having read the first two.

This is the story of Richard Heartly and Lady Mary Bourneville. Richard is a scarred man, both physically and mentally. He has been a recluse ever since returning from the war where he was tortured all thanks to being let down by a man in his regiment. It has suited his purpose over the past 5 years to let people believe he died at war. The close few that know he is alive despair for him because they think it's his scars alone that are keeping him hidden. The fact is that he needs one man to think he is dead, the very man who allowed his capture and torture to happen, the man that he is determined to see ruined before he shows his face to the world. It's been a very lonely 5 years for Richard, so when a good friend of the family holds a masquerade ball, Richard decides it would be the perfect way to be among people again without them knowing who he is.

Lady Mary is at the ball. She has had 2 seasons already and hasn't had any offers of marriage. She considers that a good thing though because she has a secret, she does something that is frowned upon by society, and would definitely not be allowed by a husband. Thanks to a miscommunication she attends the ball in a totally different style of fancy dress than the others there. Hers is a simple gown, and her hair is loose and flowing. She stands out in the crowd for once in her life, and the men actually start to notice her.

Richard is one of those men, he is mesmerised by her. Throughout the evening he gets to speak with her, rescue her from an admirer that won't take no for an answer, and by the end of the night they are both besotted with each other. Richard won't tell her who he is, but despite that, she hopes to further her acquaintance with him some how during the rest of the house party.

What follows is the story of their relationship developing, but with the added intrigue of both of them trying to keep their secrets. Can Mary help heal his mental scars, will he be brave enough to finally remove his mask? Can he prove to her that whatever her secret is, it won't make him think less of her? This book has romance, passion, danger, revenge, duels, laughter and tears. There's never a dull moment and once you start the book you won't want to put it down until you find out how everything ends.

Richard Heartly has been back from the war for five years, and only his brother and his secretary have seen him. He purposefully remains a recluse because he cannot bear to show his scarred visage to anyone. He is also planning a vendetta against the man who betrayed him, and anonymity better serves this purpose. However, a friend of his grandmother’s convinces him to attend a masquerade ball at Thorncliff Manor. Wearing a full mask and a hooded cape, Richard encounters a vision of beauty. Dressed simply as Eleanor of Aquitaine, therefore making herself more visible than she wanted, stands Lady Mary Bourneville. Richard escaping the crowded ballroom, happens upon a concert, where he encounters an enraptured Mary. The two strangers share a passion for music, and soon they discover, literature as well. Richard is convinced, he will never marry, while Mary doesn’t want to, fearing the loss of her precious independence. However, the intense intellectual connection they share makes Richard and Mary re-evaluate their former views on matrimony, if only they manage to deal with the secrets they both have.

Very loosely based upon Gaston Leroux’s Phantom of the Opera, HIS SCANDALOUS KISS is a very complex story revolving around appearances, honour, betrayal, greed, and of course true love. While Mary and Richard have secrets that initially seem to make a relationship impossible, it also allows them to appreciate the soul of the other, and their bond becomes a very solid one. Sophie Barnes’ sumptuous and evocative prose along with clever dialogues convey flawlessly how deeply Mary and Richard understand and respect each other, and their shared love of the arts is the ground on which a beautiful romance slowly blooms, and a magnificent romance it is. They eventually tell each other their secrets, and I must confess that I never anticipated the epic – and entirely plausible – plot twists that eventually surfaced. For once, nothing was due of silly misunderstandings or contrived elements, merely added for shock value; it’s all real.

HIS SCANDALOUS KISS is very intricately plotted and delightful historical facts are woven throughout the story. Mary and Richard are extremely appealing characters and perfectly matched. I love the care Ms. Barnes displays when it comes to propriety and Regency customs, and I applaud her delicate touch when it comes to the couple consuming their burning passion; it’s all done subtly and yet their passion is as palpable as if they were sexually explicit scenes. HIS SCANDALOUS KISS is a riveting story about characters and love I really believed in. A gorgeous and intelligent book that historical aficionados will devour!

Returning to Thorncliff Manor for a Masquerade Ball provides the perfect backdrop for intrigue, mystery and clandestine assignations. It’s also a wonderful diversion for Richard Heartly, a distraction from the endless time spent consumed with revenge. He’s been out of society since returning from the war, and with no real intentions to immerse himself, a ball is the best way to gather intelligence, gossip and dip his toes in. The house is, after all, the purview of his grandmother’s dearest friend, Lady Duncaster. Surely this is the opportunity he should not miss.

Mary Bourneville is utterly real and fabulous – thoughtful, generous, kind and wholly determined to live her own life on her terms. She’s also doing her utmost, with her own scandalous secret, to finance her elder brother’s life and home. She’s a wonderfully complex woman, full of moments that juxtapose her own innocence with the worldliness that comes from struggling to take charge of her own life without being hampered by a controlling family or husband.

Oh the secrets and revelations! Scandalous, deadly, shocking and even cowardly the layers of reveals and deepening of an underlying mystery involving a group of peers seeking to influence and control history, the story just glides from one moment to the next. Mary and Richard are delightful together – her far more confident and optimistic approach to life and the people she encounters are tempered only by her kindness and wish to cause no harm. Richard’s immersion in his quest for revenge and subsequent isolation from society, combined with his own fears of how he will be perceived with his injuries keep him on edge and carefully dissecting every utterance, insecure in his own approach to items that are not in line with his quest for revenge.

The story is slowly building to a conclusion of the underlying mystery at Thorncliff, with rumors of treasure and connections to earlier generations of the major characters in this story. Lady Duncaster, the current resident and owner, has brought the players together again, requested their assistance and silence, and hopes to close this chapter. A wonderful installment that keeps interest and excitement for the next book.

***I received this book for free from the publisher via Edelweiss in exchange for an honest review. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review, which was first published on book blog Will Read for Feels.

I’ve never read a book by Sophie Barnes before, and that means that I come into the Secrets at Thornhill Manor series a bit late in the day, with book 3. Still, the promise of intrigue and a Beauty-and-the-Beast scenario in His Scandalous Kiss had me keen to read this book, and I was fortunate enough to get a review copy.

Unfortunately, I found that rather than Beauty and the Beast, a story formula I’ve always enjoyed, this book was more Phantom of the Opera, a musical I dislike. The hero, Richard Heartly, hid himself from society and allowed the scars from the wounds he sustained in wartime to define his very existence, despite the protests and pleading of his loved ones. The heroine, on the other hand, was a woman with a rare and secret talent for singing, who was plagued by the financial demands placed on her by her family.

To be fair, I think this might be a good read for someone who does enjoy the Phantom story, but I found that, as with The Phantom of the Opera, I found myself bored in some parts and annoyed by the abundance of drama in others. It felt a little too contrived for my tastes, I’m afraid.

Moreover, while I found that the story can indeed be read as a standalone without much loss of cohesion, the same cannot be said for the novel’s feels, especially where the supporting characters are concerned. I was very conscious all throughout the novel that these characters had been featured in previous novels because they already had intimacies and inside jokes that went a bit above my head. It was a bit like switching to another school in the middle of the school year; everyone’s already picked their bosom buddies, and you don’t have a hope of joining anyone’s inner circle even if you do get to make friends.

All things considered, I found had to give this read a two-star review, even recognizing that some of the aspects of the book I disliked are likely to be right up other readers’ alleys. I just had a hard time engaging with the characters and the story, and I found myself hoping things would happen already (plus I spent a lot of the novel thinking, “Oh, great, now this is going to happen,” only to be proven right, which added to the yawn factor, I think).

I am stingy when it comes to which historical romances I indulge in. When I read the blurb for His Scandalous Kiss, I knew I needed to read this book! I have read others in Sophie Barnes' Secrets at Thorncliff Manor series and this was just as intriguing!

The book starts out at a Masquerade Ball and author Sophie Barnes spellbinds you with her words! I could clearly see what she was vividly describing! I felt like I was on the sideline watching everything unfold! I loved it!

Richard has been reclusive after returning from war. He carries scars he doesn't expect anyone to see. The Ball is the perfect excuse to step out with nobody knowing it is him. When a beautiful woman captivates him, he knows it would be impossible to get to know her because of his scars.

Mary is a strong woman who wants to live life the way she wants. She has no intention of ever marrying and that's fine in her book! After meeting Signor Antonio at the Ball, she feels some sort of kinship and wants to spend more time with him! When she has some clandestine rendezvous with Signor, she gets to know him better and secrets unfold. But there are those that want Mary's reputation slandered and will stop at nothing to achieve that.

I really enjoyed this take on beauty and the beast! Their journey was one of enlightenment. Both characters had secrets and they were so wrapped around the plot I didn't know what was going to happen next! I was zipping through because I needed to know how it would all play out! Such suspense and drama!!

If you love mystery, intrigue, and excitement all wrapped up in a fairy-tale type romance, this is the book for you!
Thorncliff Manor holds many secrets itself and its a wonderful setting for this series! This was a good addition and I look forward to seeing what interesting directions the author goes next!

From The Book Junkie Reads . . . His Scandalous Kiss (Secrets at Thorncliff Manor, #3) . . .
There was intrigue, mystery, plots within plots, deceptions, misguidance, and some masquerade foreplay. We have returned to the one place that holds secrets and intrigue for the masses. Where else can you be seen but not seen than at a masked ball? One came to uncover a plot. The other came to be seen but in a different light. The music attracted them both.

Richard Heartly and Lady Mary both have their own reason for wanting to attend the Thorncliff Manor Masked Ball. Each has a plan and will stay on course until it is complete. Neither was expecting to find commonality on the dance floor. There was much that unfolded in the time spent at Thorncliff Manor.

This one has been a good addition to the others of the series. It builds on the mystery, intrigue and suspense of the previous books. I would advise taking the time to read them all and in order. You will find so much more enjoyment out of this Historical Regency Romance.

His Scandalous Kiss was a lovely historical romance that started with a few shared moments at a masquerade and finished with a great HEA. Along the way our hero and heroine had a local mystery to solve while they kept their own secrets hidden from family and friends.

‘His mouth met hers, so full of love for this extraordinary woman who’d brought joy back into his life. He would give her the world if he could and he would cherish every second they’d been granted with each other.’

This truly was a passionate story filled with sweet romance and two strong protagonists who just had to find a way to be together. What struck me right away was how genuine both Mary and Richard were. Author Sophie Barnes did a superb job describing their emotions and showing that strong connection between them from the very start.

Having read as many books as I have, it's easy for me to make a decision on how I feel about a particular story and author writing style. Sophie Barnes made that harder for me with His Scandalous Kiss. Ms. Barnes is a masterful storyteller. Her imagery is so vivid that I felt like I was experiencing the story first hand. Thorncliff Manor proved to be the best setting for the unfolding romance of Mary and Richard. One reason is the place was as mysterious as the event that took place there. Another is that it added to the undercurrent of seduction between the two main characters. Secrets, suspense, romance and sensuality abound with this novel.

The Phantom of the Opera meets Beauty and the Beast. I liked this book the least out of the three I've read in this Regency Romance series so far. The beginning was good, but the last 80 or so pages were kind of a disappointment filled with cliches.

Note: I read the Swedish translation, but couldn't find that edition (which BTW has a lovely cover!) on Goodreads.

Fell out of love when the first meeting between h and H was as cold as an iceberg because they were going on and on about Austens novels, with some sophisticated language that was a bit too much, someone just chucked a bucket of cold water all over this situation.

This book has it all: stalwart hero, enchanting heroine, evil villain and an exciting plot. Richard and Mary are perfect together.

I want to start out by saying that I thoroughly enjoyed the first part of this book. When the main couple is first introduced and they started having nightly adventures together (not of the steamy variety), I was really enjoying myself.

But then it all kind of went downhill for me. The main hero is scarred and has not shown his face in public for five years. He starts to fall in love with the heroine and decides to let her see his face, which is something he struggles with. She's not bothered by his scars, of course, which is great. But after that, he decides he wants to marry her and, as such, comes back out into society with seemingly no more issues. He doesn't seem to struggle with the idea of everyone else seeing his scars, doesn't put it off as one would expect him to after locking himself away for five years. Nope, all of a sudden it's not a self esteem issue for him anymore, which I felt was a very abrupt change for his character. His brother was one of the few people who was allowed to see his scars when he came home, and we get several scenes with him and his brother during the book. But I was disappointed when we didn't get a scene where his brother is seeing him for the first time out in public - I think that would have been a touching scene and his brother would have been proud of him. All of a sudden, he's just out, having a picnic with the heroine and all of his family, like it's no big deal. I just felt like this would have been a harder struggle for him, even after he showed his face to the heroine.

Also, I'm not gonna lie, part of the appeal of historical romances for me is the steamy scenes, which this book has none of. It was emphasized multiple times in the book that he had been celibate for five years and he was constantly fighting the urge to ravish the heroine when they were alone together. But then, we finally get to the wedding night scene, and, let me tell you, I was really looking forward to the steam that was sure to happen. But no, they both get undressed and then it fades to black and skips to the next night where they're attending a ball together. I was very disappointed because we were nearing the end of the book at this point. But I was still hopeful that the author wouldn't leave the readers with absolutely no steamy scenes, so I pressed on until the end. And nothing. Let me repeat - nothing. No steam at all.

I really loved everything else about this story, but the author built up the sexual tension between these two people so much, so for us to get a fade-to-black moment as the only sex scene was very disappointing. And it confused me because the first book in the series had a couple of very steamy scenes, so I'm not sure what the author was going for in this one. I'll be honest, I skipped the second book due to mediocre reviews stating that the romance took a backseat to the mystery/spy story.

I was so excited for a scarred hero story - those are my absolute favorite HR books, but I was quite disappointed with this one in several ways.
