The Valiant Hearts Romance Collection: 9 Stories of Love Put to the Test (2016, Barbour) is a collection of previously published historical Christian romance novellas. These stories are arranged in order by the year each is set in, and I liked the feeling of gradually coming closer to modern times. Some of these stories are set in or near wartime, which indeed calls for “valiant hearts!” I sailed through this collection and was introduced to several new-to-me authors that I enjoyed.

#1: By Dim and Flaring Lamps(2001) by Colleen L Reece: 5 Stars

originally published in Lamps of Courage(2001)

Set in Hickory Hill, Virginia in October of 1860 shortly before the War Between the States, and throughout the war

Dr. Luke Danielson’s daughter Lucy is a tremendous help to him in his practice. Jere Cunningham has “loved Lucy Danielson since childhood.” Likewise, Lucy has loved Jere all her life. Soon, the War Between the States disrupts their lives, and eventually we see Luke, Lucy, and Jere at the other end of it.

I’m a sucker for sweethearts-since-childhood stories, and I really loved this one.

#2: Misprint(2005) by Kathleen Y’Barbo: 5 Stars

originally in Golden Gate Gazette(2005), the credit in the book says Kathleen Miller Y’Barbo

This story opens on Friday, June 29th, 1860.

Helen Morgan, 27, is the quiet bookkeeper at the Gazette. Her late father was a politician, and from her point of view, politicians are “difficult to find in times of need.” Henry Hill is a lawyer who is aspiring for the office of mayor. He’s living in the limelight, and if he becomes mayor, he will continue to do so.

With opposing lifestyles, Helen and Henry are an unlikely hero-heroine pair. Due to a chance meeting and then a misprint in the newspaper which must be rectified, they get to know one another. I enjoyed seeing their courtship and how it played out.

#3: Beauty from Ashes(2012) by MaryLu Tyndall:4 Stars

originally in Central Park Rendezvous(2012)

Set near Williamsburg, Virginia in 1865 during the Civil War

Permelia Shaw has been corresponding with her sister Annie’s fiance William since Annie ceased doing so three years ago. William mistook Permelia’s signature for Annie, and she has never corrected him. Permelia is in love with William. William Wolfe fought for the Union and is coming home soon. According to Annie, he is “so successful, so wealthy, and so handsome.” Permelia adds “and honorable and kind and good.” William’s infatuation for Annie has deepened into love as he has written to her. Except it’s Permelia who has been writing.

I occasionally like a story where a suitor realizes that one sister is superficial, and comes to admire the other. But Permelia never tells William that she is the one who has been corresponding with him for three years and apparently does not tell Annie that William has been corresponding. I just really think that’s going too far. God is full of grace, and flawed Christian characters are a good way to demonstrate that. But I felt that Permelia was not the Christian heroine she should have been, especially since she was juxtaposed next to the more superficial Annie. However, given the premise, the characters’ actions seemed realistic and the story was well-written. With that, I feel the need to say MaryLu Tyndall is one of my go-to authors. She really captured my heart with The Red Siren, and I’ve been reading her material ever since.

#4: Buttons for Birdie(2013) by Darlene Franklin: 4.5 Stars

originally published in Calico Brides(2013)

This story feels like a Western, set in the town of Calico (in California?)

Birdie Landry, a former prostitute, is trying to earn enough for the necessities of life, selling ready-made clothing and raising chickens in order to sell the eggs. She has a very supportive circle of friends in her sewing group, but largely avoids the other townspeople, and has no thoughts of marriage. “Men wanted purity in a wife, and she had given that up a long time ago.” Mr. Ned Finnegan owns the general store and “treated her with respect, like any other woman who frequented his store.” In fact, Ned admires Birdie’s spunk and her courage to start her life anew. He wants to help her any way she will allow him to.

I like the strong Christian messages in this one, as well as some direct Bible quotes.

#5: Dreamlight(2006) by Janet Spaeth: 3.5 Stars

originally published in Mackinac Island(2006)

Set in Mackinac Island, Michigan, 1887

Francie Woods is staying with her aunt while her parents are on a mission trip to South America. Francie, her cousin, grandmother, and aunt have just moved from Detroit to her aunt’s summer home on Mackinac Island. Francie loves to spend time in their garden, and uses it for inspiration for her stories and drawings.

Bookish Thomas Carlton is the son of a retired, but much in demand minister. Thomas has been to college and has much book learning, but has no imagination whatsoever. “It simply didn’t make sense, this imagination stuff… But why - or how - someone would work for hours on a painting of a boat when he could work for half the time on painting the boat itself…”

Thomas is introduced to Francie by her cousin, who comes to his house for embroidery lessons from his mother. After touring the garden with Francie, Thomas muses, “He had spent exactly twenty-two minutes with the young woman… yet she had, with uncanny ease, made herself a part of his life.” I felt this statement was pretty hasty, and I didn’t feel like the rest of the story gave me a strong reason to believe in a love between Thomas and Francie. Also, I felt that Thomas’ character was overly stereotypical. However, the writing, setting, and all the other characters were well-done.

#6: Black Widow(2013) by Jennifer Rogers Spinola: 4.5 Stars

first published in Yellowstone Memories(2013)

Set in 1891 near Yellowstone National Park, which is mostly in Wyoming

Wyatt Kelly, 25, lives on his Uncle Hiram’s ranch. “Jewel” is the young Arapaho girl who skillfully trains horses for Wyatt’s uncle. Wyatt has been trying to teach her English at Uncle Hiram’s request, but he seems very shy around her.

Crazy Pierre DuLac obtained a large amount of gold years ago. He has died, and there is most likely a large gold stash hidden on his property. Wyatt worked for him a while back, and believes he may have a clue about where the gold is hidden. When he goes looking, he encounters Jewel there as well, and they form a partnership.

#7: Birth of a Dream(2012) by Pamela Griffin: 4.5 stars

originally published in The Midwife’s Legacy(2012)

Set near (and in) Portland, Oregon in 1905

Christiana Leonard, 17, is a midwife-in-training. At least six generations of women on her mother’s side of the family have been midwives. Nobody is home when Christiana receives an unexpected late-night caller and answers the door herself. Mr. Noah Cafferty, a newspaperman and a fan of progress, is in need of Mrs. Leonard. Or rather, his father’s second wife needs her, as she is in labor. And nobody is home at that house, either!

Christiana takes charge, and with Noah’s help, Mrs. Cafferty’s delivery is the first one she’s ever undertaken. As a result of this situation, Christiana and Noah get to know one another quickly. However, Noah feels delivering babies is a doctor’s job, and that midwives are no longer necessary. Since midwifery is extremely important to Christiana, this is a significant conflict, seemingly irreconcilable. The relationship aspect of this story felt realistic, which is something I always appreciate.

#8: Home Fires Burning (2001) by JoAnn A. Grote: 4.5 Stars

first published in Lamps of Courage(2001)

Set in October 1918, Fort Snelling, Minnesota

Glorie Cunningham is a WWI nurse on the home front, caring for wounded soldiers sent back to the United States. Lieutenant Johan Baker put himself in danger in an act of heroism, saving a fellow soldier from toxic mustard gas. Somehow, he was eventually rescued and sent home to the States for recovery at the military hospital where Glorie works.

The historical research is very well-integrated into this story. The reason I didn’t give 5 stars is that I needed a bit more detail to convince me of Glorie and Johan’s initial interest in one another. This story has a connection to By Dim and Flaring Lamps, the first one in this collection.

#9: Bayside Bride(2001) by Kristin Billerbeck: 3.5 Stars

originally published in Heirloom Brides(2001)

Set in 1929 in San Francisco, California, right before the beginning of the Great Depression

Josephine Mayer, 17, and her younger sister Claire are distressed at their father’s marriage to Agnes, the family’s housekeeper. Their father is gone a lot due to work and isn’t privy to how the housekeeper treats his daughters in his absence. Jo goes to join their oldest sister Marian in California, save up money, and wire the funds to thirteen-year-old Claire so she can join her sisters in California. Unfortunately, Jo is learning that it’s very difficult to find work. Glen Bechtel is a carpenter’s apprentice and currently works at the opulent Linton estate. Upon meeting Jo, he offers to introduce her to the housekeeper at the Linton estate in the hopes she can find a position.

I liked the premise of this story, but I was disappointed by Glen’s strong reaction to Jo being (from context, I believe only a few minutes) late meeting him for the cable ride. He says, “it’s not your tardiness that’s the problem. It’s your attitude. You’ve never worked a day in your life, have you?” Then immediately after this, “she felt something she didn’t care to examine further. A connection with the hardhearted carpenter she felt to her very soul.” Jo is just too quick to be interested in him, especially in the face of harsh criticism. The plot and writing are good, but the character’s thoughts/speech/behavior didn’t always seem quite right to me.

******************

Overall, I enjoyed this collection very much. I’d recommend it to fans of historical Christian novellas set in the United States.

Thanks to Barbour and NetGalley for the opportunity to read this book.

BY DIM AND FLARING LAMPS – 1/5. This one felt weird to me and I can’t figure out why. I know that the time period and romance felt like they were two separate things pushed together, so maybe that was it. All I know is that this one wasn’t my favorite.

MISPRINT – 4/5. This is a comedy of errors and lets you know quickly that it’s going to be more than second-hand embarrassment. I did find it slightly talky and the stakes are implied to be much higher than they are, but it’s a simple story that works well and is enjoyable.

BEAUTY FROM ASHES – 3.5/5. This had a character with PTSD/PTSS and it was done fairly well. I didn’t like many of the characters, but outside of that it was an ok story, so rating this is more subjective.

BUTTONS FOR BIRDIE – 4.5/5. This was a really sweet story that dealt with ministry being done in a ‘natural’ setting and how to balance business with delicate situations (on top of doing business with your crush). While the ending is not great, it’s a very sweet story.

DREAMLIGHT – 2.5/5. This isn’t the fun awkward like MISPRINT. It’s super awkward, but I appreciate the awkwardness of finding your person that is shown.

BLACK WIDOW – 4/5. Get rekt, Wyatt. The FemMC is amazing and I love her. It was “boring” story in that not much happened, but it was the good kind of boring.

BIRTH OF A DREAM – 4.5/5. (First of all, do you know how difficult it is to not make an edgy joke about Portland when the MaMC stated Portland was the hub of progress?) I appreciated how there was nice tension between characters about the application about what they believed while still being believably attracted to one another. It is a simple story that was fun to read.

HOME FIRES BURNING – 4.25/5. The toddler!Red Cross Volunteer has my loyalty and I would die for her. I want more characters like her. It’s hella sad, so buckle up.

BAYSIDE BRIDE – 2/5. Hot take: Glen is not a good person. If it had leaned more into the Bad BoyTM trope, it would have been better, but as it is right now, Glen is just pretentious.

Recommended 13+ for romance, situations not appropriate for younger readers, drinking, death, and other things I may have missed.

An enjoyable collection of historical romances! Featuring a wide variety of men and women who rise above their difficult circumstances to courageously face their fears and help others, selflessly and sacrificially in some cases. From the Civil War South, to the wild frontier of Wyoming and a young San Francisco, to the gentile Mackinac Island Grand Hotel opening, through World War One and up to the start of the Depression, the people and history made this an interesting set of short stories. Plenty of action, including sword and gunfights, drama, adventure, and romances laced with inspiration.

One of my favorites was Buttons for Birdie, with a kind shopkeeper who tries to help a former "soiled dove" in her brave mission to rescue others, with newfound faith and a few loyal friends. I also really enjoyed the Black Widow pairing a young greenhorn ranch hand, who preferred reading law books to punching cows, with a tough Arapaho woman who's a horse whisperer and a crack shot. Home Fires Burning was quite good too, connecting back to the first story with a family legacy of nursing, from the Civil War to WWI. I really enjoyed the characters of Johan and Glorie; their sweet romance had a lot of depth.

Recommend to readers who enjoy historical Christian romances!

The Valiant Hearts Romance Collection has nine stories that prove love is never easy. Beginning in the antibellum era and moving through to the Great Depression, these narratives describe love stories that came through the fire and survived. Sometimes the fire was war, sometimes it was more serious than that, but each time, love overcame every obstacle and triumphed.

Why do I read these stories? A friend once told me I like happy. It's true, I do. But there's something in me that NEEDS love to triumph every time. There is a love story that fights its way through wars, hardships, rebellion, and every kind of evil, and triumphs in a big way. At the end of all the struggle, a bride is dressed in eternal glory and presented to her savior husband, also dressed in eternal glory. Because love triumphed then, and triumphs still.

While I enjoyed most of the nine novellas in this compilation, there were one or two that I skimmed through because they didn't grasp my attention. The rest are fairly riveting and sometimes surprising. Solid Four Stars.

Barbour Books supplied this olio in exchange for my honest opinion. My thanks to them.

Complete honesty, I skipped the first story altogether. I tried 3 different times and couldn't get past the second page. The next eight stories in the book were enjoyable reads and a good way to relax at the end of a long day.

Really enjoyed 2 or 3 of the stories in this collection. A couple I didn't even read. I don't like war stories at all. BUT I am going to order in more books by some of the authors.

Valiant Hearts Romance Collection 9 stories of love put to the test

I received a free copy from NetGalley.com in exchange for a fair review. Reviews posted on Amazon, Goodreads, and NetGalley by Cindy Nipper

By Dim and Flaring Lamps by Colleen L. Reece

Rich young Jeremiah selected Lucy to be his bride when he was six years old! Against his father’s wishes, time has not made him waver in his pursuit of her love and affection! Set in the tumultuous time of the Civil War, Jeremiah has to choose to fight for his love Lucy or fight for his approval from his father! Lucy the daughter of a doctor also has to make a decision! Will the war separate the love of a lifetime or actually bring them closer together? Colleen is a new author to me, but I will look for more of her works to enjoy! Adding war period romances to my “to be read” list of mail order brides and western romances!

Misprint by Kathleen Miller Y’Barbo

Who can start a romance out of a misprint that blames the man running for mayor as the suspected murderer? Only Kathleen Y’Barbo can! This is a great sweet read! A shy tongue-tied newspaper girl is wooed by the handsome rich mayor want to be! This is a Cinderella type story that I truly enjoyed! As always, I am very pleased with all of Kathleen’s books! Keep them coming!

Beauty from Ashes by MaryLu Tyndall

Another wartime romance, MaryLu spins a tale of the truth of war and the changes in everyone both physical and psychological! William returns from war with a face mangled. Will his fiancé be repulsed or love him unconditionally. I am afraid I’ll give too much away, but this is a wonderful read! True Love conquers and character wins over riches and beauty! Well done MaryLu! Until next time!

Buttons for Birdie by Darlene Franklin

A beautiful story of a soiled dove who found God and acceptance by many women of the town of Calico. I have read many of Darlene’s books and a few other characters from this circle of women! This one stands out as the reader learns how to move forward to all God has for her when her past is pulling her backwards! I look forward to hearing how the rest of the women fair in grace and love! See you soon Calico!

Home Fires Burning by JoAnn A. Grote

This was a touching story of a nurse Gloria, her sister Grace, who is a Red Cross Volunteer, and the hospital they work at in the States during the end of the first World War. Johan one of the patients is a German-American and another patient Captain Smith takes all his hatred for the Germans out on Johan. There is just as much strife between the two officers as there are sparks of interest between Johan and the nurse Gloria. Love and compassion win in this romance despite the rough circumstances.

I honestly read and loved the whole book but got into the next story so strongly sometimes I didn't take notes and write a review for each short story! This is a wonderful, although long, read and I highly recommend it!

The Valiant Hearts Romance Collection: 9 Stories of Love Put to the Test

This collection of nine historical romances offers a variety of story-lines that span the years of 1860-1929, in Michigan, Virginia, Wyoming, Kansas, Oregon, Minnesota and California from the Civil War through the Depression eras. I enjoyed reading about these brave, strong, ordinary men and women whose lives have been disrupted by war and the rebuilding after, the depression, prejudices, challenges and injustices, hopes, dreams and faith. As men and women of strong faith they have hope, help each other as they are able and surprisingly finding love as they do so in the midst of tragedies and heartache. I appreciate the inspirational elements of the stories. As a retired nurse, I especially enjoy reading about the nurses during this historical era. There are two stories that have historical notes regarding their stories which I enjoyed. One story has a recipe included related to that story. A heartwarming collection.

The Valiant Hearts Romance Collection contains nine stories of love put to the test. Nine authors contributed to this book with nine novellas.

Beginning in 1860, Virginia with Lucy Danielson and Jeremiah Cunningham's story and ending in 1929, California with Josephine Mayer and the two men vying for her love during Prohibition. These stories are wonderfully written, though one I had a little trouble getting into to be honest. It ended well enough though.

The authors are Colleen L Reece with By Dim and Flaring Lamps; Kathleen Y'Barbo with Misprint; Marylu Tyndall with Beauty from Ashes; Darlene Franklin with Buttons for Birdie; Janet Spaeth with Dreamlight; Jennifer Rogers Spinola with Black Widow; Pamela Griffin with Birth of a Dream; JoAnn A. Grote with Home Fires Burning; and Kristin Billerbeck with Bayside Bride.
You will find that the couple in By Dim and Flaring Lamps return, somewhat older, in Home Fires Burning, which was nice to see. I like it when authors get together and write these types of novellas. Nice to see old friends again so to speak.

You can't miss when you read this collection of novellas. After all, look who the authors are. Give this collection of novellas a chance and you won't be disappointed. Enjoy!

This book was given to me for my honest review. The opinions stated are my own and no monetary compensation was received for this review.

Though still a romance collection and each story having a romance or element of romance, it was not as much their focus,. This collection focused more on the setting or the events... San Francisco politics and newspapers, gold hunting, civil war, freeing soiled doves in the west, etc. Sometimes the romance part started and ended in the last few pages, one the stories even ended before they told each other they liked each other, kissed or anything. Though i was disappointed that several don't mention what happened to the bad guys at the end! Fun stories for the historical context though, a great variety of settings and surprising love stories with couples you would not normally expect. A suave politician with a stuttering accountant, a fainting redheaded guy with an french Arapaho with perfect aim and no fear, a conservative shopkeeper with a independant ex-soiled dove... interesting combos and sometimes life does happen that way, nice to have the odd relationships represented too.

9 stories about brave young women fighting for their dreams, values - and about how they are finding love in the process.

There is something for everybody in the collection. I think this is a fine book to read under the Christmas tree or during the lazy summery day, when you are resting and want some nice story to drift you away.
While some of the stories are a bit simple for my taste, I can' t deny them a certain sweetness.

My favourite are these:
Birth of a Dream by Pamela Griffin - because I love how Christiana is herself without being rude, and because I love men like Noah who love truth more than their pride.

Home Fires Burning by JoAnn A. Grote - because this is the sweetest love story in the collection for me. And because the story manages to be that way even if it is actually full of pain, but the pain can get a real meaning here.

Bayside Bride by Kristin Billerbeck - because I love everything by Kristin Billerbeck :)

The Valiant Hearts Collection is a group of short novellas that tell about love, trials, and span through a part of history that must have been difficult to live in from civil war through the depression. These stories are great for reading when you have not much time to devote to a full length novel. They add just enough to give you a taste though some you wish you could have a bit more of the story. There were a couple stories that I had a hard time finishing but everyone has different tastes. Ashes was a great story by MaryLu Tyndall. Overall it is a great collection.

A copy of this collection was given to me by Barbour Books for my honest review.

An interesting collection of 9 historical romances. The stories feature women who live sacrificial lives through difficult circumstances. It is difficult to rate the book because I liked some stories better than others. From the Civil War through the Depression these stories were full of adventure and lighthearted romance. I would recommend this book if you are looking for short stories to encourage and inspire.
