Special Agent Ryan O’Connor’s life is exactly on track—she’s with a wonderful woman, and she’s doing something she loves. Sure, her boss can’t stand her, but she figures if that’s her biggest problem, she’s pretty damn lucky. She should have known it was too good to last and that when fate finally slapped her, it would do so hard enough to leave a mark.
When Ryan’s ex-girlfriend, Special Agent Allison Reynolds, suddenly reappears in New York, her carefully constructed world is thrown into chaos. As they’re forced to work together, Ryan is compelled to confront several realities that she wishes she could avoid. One of which is that it’s terrible to mix the past with the present. The other is that it’s not only the past that paints the present with lead.
Kara A. McLeod is a badass by day and a smartass by night. Or maybe it’s the other way around. Or quite possibly neither. It really depends on who you ask. A Jersey girl at heart, “Mac” is an intrepid wanderer who goes wherever the wind takes her. A former Secret Service agent who decided she wanted more out of life than standing in a stairwell and losing an entire month every year to the United Nations General Assembly, she currently resides in an RV with her straight best friend and two ferocious dogs searching hither and yon for the meaning of life, the nearest comic con, and the world’s best margarita.
'Netgalley ARC provided by The Publisher in exchange for my unbiased review'
**! A very disappointing read:- no spunk,no spice or fire in the writing. The storyline just drags on & on and was way too long in the details, when coming to the partners the author could not seem to developed any kind of chemistry or connection with them. Now back to the writing which was a little off and not up to par(boring) plus the series/storyline and plot twists did not make any sense because it just felt a bit disconnected in addition both the information and the research that was needed for this book (investigation) did not seem to jell together when come to the writing.
Ryan and Allison are both secret service agents based in New York. After an amazing love affair and an even more spectacular break-up, Allison moves to DC for a coveted position protecting the president. Ryan stays behind and immerses herself in work and finds a new 'girlfriend'. Things begin to feel like she has finally moved on. But when Allison returns for an assignment in NY and specifically requests to be partnered with Ryan, memories of their intense and all-consuming relationship haunt Ryan all hours of the day. What does Allison want now? Is it just work or is Allison attempting to rekindle the old flame? She can't possibly be expecting the 'good old times' after the way she unceremoniously dumped Ryan and left without looking back. And where does that leave Luce, her current. And what are they exactly, she and Luce? For the first time in two years, after the Allison affair, Ryan is finally going steady with a girl. But can any relationship ever compete with an "ass-over-teakettle, rocket-ship-to-the-moon, heart-stopping, nerve-wracking kind of love"?
Before I started this book, I couldn't help noticing the multiple low ratings on GR and cringe, omg, did my fave lesfic publisher just drop the ball again, lol. I still shudder at last month's cringe-worthy Murder at the Rocks, and promptly braced myself for a similar experience. (A Netgalley book can't be returned, unfortunately :) Much to my surprise, I very much enjoyed this book. Chapter after chapter, I kept waiting for it to get worse. It was like, so many reviewers couldn't be wrong, could they? I had such low expectations, lol. It didn't though and it even finished with a nice, kick-ass ending.
The thing I loved the most about the book was the constant, just-simmering-below-the-surface angst. This is due to the first person point-of-view the book uses. Since we don't see other pov's, we see the world through Ryan's eyes and suffer with her through all the past hurts and present confusion and indecision. I didn't have trouble at all getting inside Ryan's head and heart. And while Allison turns her emotional world upside down, Ryan has to navigate nasty bosses, teach cocky rookies a lesson, and work, work, work.... Somewhat unfortunately for the book, secret service protection is mostly mundane and boring and very unglamorous work. And while I applaud the book's authenticity, it does nothing for the excitement. This is clearly not a thriller, even if the cover seems to suggest something dark and gritty. Fortunately, the romance and drama more than carry the book. And the ending suggests that the second book may be more of a thriller....if Ryan actually gets to do something 'thrilling'. Yeah, this reminded me of the Cops and Docs series--lots of cop talk, but no cop action. :)
As for my affection for the book. I think the author pretty much had me at "that particular brand of bliss that's ass-over-teakettle, rocket-ship-to-the-moon, heart-stopping, nerve-wracking kind of love that simultaneously hijacked and destroyed your entire existence...." (at 4%). There's something about that kind of scorching hot love that calls to me. It's like flame to a moth. In can burn, but it's oh so beautiful. In the book, the author carefully balances Ryan's two relationships so you can't really tell which one she's going to choose. But there's no doubt who I'm rooting for, no matter which way the plot was going to turn.
I really liked that the author took great pains to avoid the 'misunderstandings that could have been cleared up by a simple text/conversation' trope. It doesn't work perfectly, but at least it's something...much better than the usual nonsense we encounter in lesfic. Some other things I really liked--most of which happens towards the end--I thought the author's depiction of a secret service agent's day-to-day routine was realistic. There's no over-the-top cheesiness or silliness or self-importance, although, Ryan's abilities does seem Mary Sue-ish at times (she's too good in everything).
Technically, there is nothing wrong with the writing. But the book could use much heavier editing, mostly to speed up scenes by weeding out details here and there and maybe cut out an unnecessary subplot or two altogether. For example, I'm not sure why the book needs to spend so many pages making Ryan show up some cocky newbie agent except to show us how amazingly fit Ryan is. So what if she is? I get it that the author is painstakingly following the 'show-don't tell rule' but maybe showing us some abs is enough, lol.
With all her talents, Ryan is totally wasted as a secret service agent, who is basically just a glorified security guard. I'm sure some other more exciting agency like the FBI can find a better uses for her talent. I hope she gets loaned to them in Book 2 and actually does something interesting.
Actual Stop would be a much better book without cca. 15,000 words -- all of them related to the tedious job of Secret Service agents. That's because this is not an intrigue & thriller cum romance as it says on the publisher's site, but a romance as properly tagged on NetGalley. Still smoldering old flame is back in town after more than four years since the breakup. This is when it all begins -- love triangle, passion, jealousy, deceit, angst, drama, fear, insecurities... The aforementioned promised an interesting romantic part of the story, which in fact is the case. The romantic part is done well regardless of the use of some common tropes and a not very convincing explanation at the end. Contrary to that, the part of the story related to the job of main characters is boring as hell. Virtually nothing interesting happened regarding that, except towards the end . And that is only so that the romance could end up in a satisfactory manner . Four stars for the romance, one and a half star for everything else, bonus half star for the debut. All in all, a solid three stars, because I am primarily a fan of romances. I still need to think it over whether to continue with this series or not.
3 1/2 Stars. Even with this book having such mixed reviews, I was dying to read it. And I'm glad I did because I enjoyed it. I must admit, yes there are reasons for the mixed reviews. Parts of this book were very frustrating. I was just able to get past a lot of the issues and enjoy myself. I very much liked the semi flawed character of Ryan, though I wish she wasn't the narrator of the story. I did enjoy her girlfriend Luce, until the author made her crazy all of a sudden. The ex Allison, I had trouble with. I did not like her and found myself upset that Ryan was so infatuated with her. Allison did kind of grow on me towards the end, I'm still up in the air about her. The secondary characters, where not so great. They were kind of thrown in a random, never really letting you get to know them. When it came to the mystery/crime of the book, I thought it was better than other people gave it credit for. I was following the breadcrumbs and became extremely suspicious of Ryan's I just read P. Industry review, and she put the clues together much better than I did and I think she is pretty darn right. Read her review if you want to know more about the mystery. My biggest disappointment, was of course the end. While it wrapped up the romance, it totally left the mystery hanging. While I think I know sort of what is going on, I guess we have to hope for a book 2 to find out. So while yes this book was frustrating at times, I still enjoyed it. And I really hope a book 2 is coming and coming soon.
3,5 stars I have some mixed feelings about this book. I enjoyed it but there still are some questions open to me, but that's maybe because it's the first book in a series. It seems like almost every character which will play a role in the future books has his appearance in this one. I liked Ryan as a character but she and the other two MCs in this book, Allison and Luce have some terrible miscommunications and misinterpretations, which could be solved with some real talking. But I will take on book two, I'm wondering where this journey will be going.
I received a copy of this book from Netgalley and Bold Strokes Books for an honest review.
Insert here my standard 'this is the first work I've read by this author' statement.
In praise of this book and this author: the author appears to be capable of writing a coherent, competent, clear book with relatively detailed characters.
In the opposite of praise of this book (though not of this author): baring a few minor characters, I somewhat grew to rather dislike the characters. To a deep level of dislike. Plus, while the book appeared competently written, there were a few issues I had with it on a structural level as opposed to substance level.
There were several occasions in which the author spent time creating build up, and then not delivering. Specifically referring to:
(1) a great deal of time and energy was put in by the characters to get ready for the president of the USA to visit NY, it is the reason why the main character's ex-girlfriend was in NY - for that visit of the President. And then . . . nothing. Mind you, I wasn't exactly expecting much. Heck, I'd have lived if there was just a line that said roughly 'the president entered the car and was driven to the hotel'. Instead we got build up and then . . . the after party. The story-line went something like 'the president is coming' to 'Wheels up' (in other words, the president has left). It is not a huge issue, just felt like something of a let down. Though I didn't specifically deduct any 'points' for this issue.
(2) for some unknown reason, a real jackass of a man popped up in the book. Ryan's boss (Ryan being both the main character and only POV) asked Ryan to 'put him in his place', or words to that effect. Because he is being a real arrogant asshole. The storyline went from having that boss asking Ryan, to Ryan at her desk looking tired. As in, none of the actual event takes place in the book. I've no idea why this scene was in there in the first place, there's no inherent reason for it's inclusion, and then the action part of the scene (like the action part above) got cut.
(3) for no known reason, Ryan's direct boss (different guy than in 2, who is a higher up guy), is a real asshole. Towards many, but especially towards Ryan. I've no inherent problem with this characterization. Nor do I have any inherent problem with the 'why' being left blank. My problem has to do with how a 'mystery' got generated around him. That was never answered.
(4) I have no real inherent problem with the build up and then lack of follow-through in four. Though it follows a pattern, so I included it
(5) Meaghan (Ryan's partner). (a) She acted kind of pissed every time Allison (Ryan's ex) turned up; (b) acted very suspiciously at the end of the book
On the substance level: every character, for the most part, had a good bit of characterization stuffed into them; but were quite loathable. Loathsome. Unlikable. I didn't like any of them.
Mystery: the only real book long mystery involved that guy who had passed counterfeit money and possibly had ties to terrorism. That played a big part in the beginning of the book, but very little the rest of the way.
Action: except for one specific scene at or near the end, there was a lot of build up for action scenes, then the actual action scenes got 'cut' (again, except for the last action sequence).
Romance: Let's see. Love triangle. Cheating. Assumation of cheating. Etc. I didn't particularly like the relationship between Ryan and Lucia (the two were dating at the start of the book). Ryan was quite dismissive of her, and refused to call the woman she had been dating for six months her girlfriend. Lucia seemed quite lovable and deserved anyone other than Ryan .
I do not really get the Ryan-Allison relationship. It really read like an abusive relationship. Ryan loved Allison. Allison showed a certain amount of affection. Allison did not wish to publically acknowledge the relationship. Got pissed at Ryan if Ryan crossed a line and showed too much affection (or even, at times, was in the same room). Got pissed at Ryan if Ryan didn't show affection. Basically Allison was a massive bitch to Ryan, and Ryan was psychologically abused. I'm not actually sure if we are talking about love here or Stockholm Syndrome.
None of Allison's 'reasons' for her actions, which get revealed at the end, are the kind of thing that would give her a pass or otherwise . . . . um . . . forgive her. And, quite frankly, I've heard the abuser in an abuse relationship saying some of the same things Allison gave.
Boiled down: I'd give this book some rating nearish 2.8 stars, rounded up to 3. In thinking about whether or not I'd read this author again, I reminded myself of how many books I've DNF, or rated lowly, by authors I'd given a ton of 5 stars to. (I believe the author with the most books I've rated 5 stars is also the same author I've DNF'd the most books by - Georgette Heyer). Point being, sometimes the same author will create love/hate inside of me. So yes I'll probably read something else by this author.
Heck, I'd recently read a book in which something like 99% of the readers gave a super low rating, or DNF'd the book (no, I'm not talking about this book here). I also gave that book a low rating. And then, not immediately but eventually, I read another book by that same author. Authors that can create emotions in me will be given plenty of chances to interest me. Well, 2 to five chances.
And yes, there are parts of this book that enraged me. Many parts. - Like the part wherein Ryan got pissed at her girlfriend when her girlfriend got angry at her for canceling yet another date. Without actually remembering to call to cancel.
- And the several occasions in which Ryan did improper things (interviewing a counterfeit suspect, as a favor, when she had no power to do so (power? authority. I mean authority); ironically, or not ironically, by doing so she found a reason, a justification but that was after the fact), some of which are illegal (driving while texting/talking on the phone).
Re: improper. I'd put that one in my status updates: Seriously, what the does she expect to accomplish here? I thought of that before she even entered the apartment. (A) she's let a possible criminal know the 'government' is onto him; (B) gained no information for her troubles (from the interview, later learned some things); (C) if she had gained information . . . what was she going to do with it? She wasn't authorized to be talking to this guy.
hmm. The book was/is a lot more coherent than my review.
This is one of those books that the cover actually sold me on the book. I like a good cop procedural but sometimes it has too much crime. (That’s probably an oxymoron, right, too much crime, but you know what I mean, you read romance novel too!) I will confess the romance is what I want, catch the bad guys sure, but let’s have more smoldering romance than chasing villain’s, okay. Special Agent Ryan O’Connor is a secret service agent that works the on the Protective Intelligence Squad handling threat cases. Ryan has finally got her life back on track after having her heart shredded by the love of her life. Ryan uses oodles of duct tape and pieces back her heart to finally begin dating again. She has entered in to new relationship with a one of NYPD’s finest. The only problem is Lucia feels way more attached that Ryan does.
Enter the heart breaker herself, Special Agent Allison Reynolds. This is secret service agent is one of Mr. President’s own guard. She is calm, cool and collected in a constant storm of chaos. Ryan is her weakness though. You can tell as soon as they come back together to work a detail to guard the President as he travels into the city. The old flame is back, but what is it she’s after?
So my thoughts on this one are mixed. I really, really liked it, well most parts of it. What I love specifically is the angstiness of it. Ryan and Allison have chemistry. HOT!!! It’s obvious as soon as they see each other again after their four year hiatus. To me as the reader the attraction and dynamic these two had just jumped right off the page. I loved the parts of the story where these two were together and trying to navigate how to be friends and colleagues.
What I was not a huge fan of is too much detail about the Secret Service. Too much procedural stuff, details that are important to the line of work sure, unglamorous at times, but still just a smidgen will do. I understand why it was there it just became rather dry. This is what may turn some reader off, but if you can look past this there is a diamond in the rough.
For me Kara A. McLeod’s first novel Actual Stop is a big hit. I thought this book had emotion and I loved it. The feelings Ryan has for Allison is dynamic, the emotions and intensity of their attraction just pulled me in chapter after chapter. While reviews maybe mixed, I quite frankly loved this one.
4.25 stars. I was given this book by Netgalley & Bold Strokes Books in return for an honest review. My Blog: theromanticreaderblog.com
This is good but not great and I think it's because it's the first in a series. It feels like just about everybody who is going to play a part in the series has been introduced in this book. I really like Ryan as a character but I'm not sure about Allison as her prospective partner. There is a lot of angst and tension between the two which I seem to be in the mood for at the moment.
Essentially I'm trying to get to book three but need to get through the first two. I'm intrigued enough to want to continue and I did enjoy the way it was written.
This book grabbed me in and wouldn't let me put it down. I found both characters compelling, their chemistry was great, and the story feels like it has just started. I'm so glad the next two books in the series have already been published. I'm diving right into book 2.
This book was simultaneously great, and frustrating
Ryan O’Conner is a Secret Service Agent working out of the New York office. Allison Reynolds was “the one who got away” – but not before brutally dumping Ryan and taking off with no contact for six years. Now Allison is back, planning the Secret Service’s precautions for a presidential trip to NYC and requesting Ryan as local backup. But Ryan has her own troubles; a grumpy boss, a huge caseload (both Secret Service and Joint Terrorist Task Force), semi-private investigations on the side, and a new girlfriend. How will all this play out?
I’m going to say straight up that I loved this book. It is beautifully written, pretty well edited, and gripping all the way through. The characters have believable angst - and Ryan is properly distrustful of her ex. (Normally I hate this kind of thing (check out my reviews on books on my "problematic" shelf if you don't believe me) but the distrust displayed by Ryan is an important part of the growth both her and Allison go through in the novel, so I am cool with it.) The book has a real sense of time, the chemistry between all the characters is palpable, and their motivations are believable.
I also want to say that all the reviews out there are correct. All of them - the ones with high scores but a written review that screams of frustration; the low-score reviews that complain it feels flat; the reviews that moan about the Secret Service parts of this novel dragging this out; the ones that state there doesn’t seem to be any real “thriller” part to this novel? Those are completely correct, and also not correct. Their impressions have to do with the weight given to the romance vis a visthe "cop" part of the novel, and not helped in the slightest by the bizarrely abrupt ending.
So that’s my review for the book if you haven’t read it yet, because everything else this review is going to say effectively are HUGE spoilers. Okay? Seriously, it's about two pages of stuff - I got onto a rant roll and kind of lost track of scale. If you don’t mind spoilers, or have done and dusted with this novel, then read on.
In conclusion, I loved the novel – stayed up until 2am reading it cover to cover, really keen to find out what happened next. The problem was that the stuff I stayed up for was never addressed. Regardless, I did stay up, and it provoked many feelings.
Four stars.
EDITED for spelling in the wall of text. EDITED 2 to add in some points from the discussion in the comments.
Special Agent Ryan O’Conner finally feels that everything is ticking along for her. She feels like she’s getting over her ex, has a newish girlfriend but nothing too serious, and loves her job. Working for the Secret Service, she investigates the threats against various politicians and visiting dignitaries, and handles protection for them when they visit town.
Ryan’s ex-girlfriend, the one who trashed Ryan’s sense of self, has been promoted to “the show”, as the Secret Service like to call the Presidential Protection Detail. Before the President blows into town, it is Special Agent Allison Reynolds’ job to make sure the President will be safe.
Of course, her only choice for the job of assisting her amongst the locals is her ex, turning Ryan’s job into a terrifying misery of anxiety and attraction.
This was a lot of fun. What is really apparent is how well McLeod knows the subject material. Reading the blurb at the end of the book, I can see why, as McLeod was a Secret Service Agent. I found that aspect of the book fascinating, and refreshing. There are a lot of agent or cop romances on the market, but none about the Secret Service and none written with such deep knowledge and understanding of the job, and the people who work it.
I really liked the main character. Ryan is very likeable, a bit of a smart alec, but also hard working, diligent and supportive of her co-workers. She isn’t perfect, but she is a great lead character and is perfect for the story.
The other main character, Allison, takes a bit longer to get to know. She’s not as well fleshed out, and there are definitely some misunderstandings that come from poor communication, but there wouldn’t be a story without them.
What is really well written is the seething attraction the two women share, and how that makes even the most mundane tasks a sweaty mess of anxiety and lust. It is squirmingly fun to watch how McLeod puts Ryan through the ringer, but she handles it so well it is a joy to read.
There is a secondary plot the characters have to deal with regarding their day jobs, but I won’t spoil it by going into detail. I will say that this plot strand is very minor compared to the romance between the characters.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. This was a lot of fun and had enough thrills to keep it ticking over at the end. I didn’t expect it to be this good, but I’ve put the author on my “watch” list and I’m really looking forward to reading anything else McLeod writes.

Secret Service agent Ryan O`Connor had problems with her boss but other than that things were going well. That is until she had to work with her ex-girlfriend Allison after not seeing her for years. Allison's return complicates things for Ryan.
I liked Ryan and Allison also liked their chemistry together. I didn't like that it took so long for an explanation of why they broke up before.
The explanations of how the Secret Service does their job was interesting. I didn't realize how much work went into protection detail. The story had enough action to keep me reading and want to continue to the next book.

I am still trying to work out why it has taken me so long to read this series. From the first few pages I knew this was my type of book. I thought Ryan was witty and fun to read about providing a good balance between series and humour. I found myself laughing at the most series of times because of the inserted humour that played such an important role to Ryan's character.
I will admit Allison didn't really win me over in this book and am hopeful she will in book 2.
An honest review thanks to NetGalley. I liked this book; I devoured it unable to put it down. I do wish I had more about Allison and Ryan's relationship before they broke up. The romance and chemistry between them as well as the plot line. Ryan was amazing, and I couldn't get enough of her. Just a warning if you read this you will immediately start the second!
So, I get where some people may have a few issues with this read. I for the most part enjoyed enough that I immediately went for the next one in the series. This isn't really a police procedural type book. More of a romance where the main characters are Secret Service agents. There is a lot of angst. At times a little too much. But again, overall enjoyable.
3.5 stars There are a lot of things to like in this book, although there are a couple of things that are a bit lacking. I like McLeod's style of writing, and the flow made it easy to keep turning pages. I found the details of her Secret Service job interesting, and liked hearing about the various different departments that we don't usually hear about. However, I found Ryan to be a little immature. She's still hung up on her ex, Allison, a fellow agent who dumped her, but she's been seeing Lucia for the last six months, and doesn't consider that a relationship. Obviously, after Allison, feelings aren't her strong suit, but I find it annoying that anytime anything 'feelings' related came up, Ryan shoved it all to the back burner and ignored it. Definitely not a way to not hurt the person you're involved with. With that type of introspection and lack of self-awareness, I don't find it surprising at all that Ryan hasn't moved on at all in the four years since Allison left. Nor that she has no clue what Lucia really feels for her. At the same time, she castigates and self-flagellates enough for her shortcomings that you'd really expect her to try to resolve some things. I will say that there were several unresolved issues at the end of the book that definitely tie into book two. It isn't quite a cliffhanger, but definitely ways that you can see where the next book will go. I'll withhold my own suppositions and suspicions, but would gladly pick up the next book in the series. I'd like to see how some of those threads are tied up. Pretty good for a debut, and I can only expect things to get better. I received a copy of this book from Inked Rainbow Reads in return for an honest review.
Thanks to netgalley.com, Boldstroke Books and author Kara A. McLeod for the advance ARC for my honest review.
'Actual Stop', was my first read from author Kara A. McLeod, found it interesting yet very boring, started it several times, only to pick it back up and retry too read it. The real problem with this book for me is that it goes no where fast, overloaded with boredom and the overall story line is just plain dumb. Plus just with the author words you got a better story buried in this one.
I liked both Special Secret Service agents Ryan O'Connor and Meaghan Bates, they're assigned to the Protective Intelligence Squad, share an office, they have chemistry, and easily the author could have built the story around them.
Found the whole thing with Ryan pining about Allison to be dumb, with the shooting on another assignment Ryan was on and just makes it seem like this is short story segments pieced together and it doesn't work.
A better story would have been the following. When Ryan's ex-girlfriend Special Agent Allison Reynolds comes back to New York too work with her. To protect Ryan, they originally fake that she's in a relationship with Meaghan, ultimately the two end up falling in love, Allison's actually pregnant, then keep some of the original storyline and can't forget Meaghan dumps her fiancée.
While I didn't like this, can see why other readers would like this and will give the author Kara A. McLeod another try.
Agent Ryan O'Connor is feisty and very hard working. And she's still broken after her first love left her. And after years she still had a hard time opening her heart. Even though she got a really hot "not so girlfriend" at present (Lucia) her heart still ached for her past love. Enter Allison, the ex who left her. After so many years, it's still her and will always be her no matter what. I also hate her Boss. He's really mean and annoying. Everyone loves Ryan. Well.. except her boss. What's with him anyway?
Okay, so I liked Lucia on the first part of the book. She's understanding, sweet, etc. and suddenly she became the cheater and the psychotic ex girlfriend. I just wish she remained a good character even though we all know she will not end up with Ryan.
Allison is described as the "golden child". Her career is always the priority that's the main reason of their break up because she chose her dream job over Ryan. She's also a closet agent.
Often times, I got confused on some parts. Maybe because the timing is sometimes off? I dunno. I changed my rating from 3 to 4 because I'm still interested to read the sequel.
Special Agent Ryan O’Connor reminds me so much of myself it was almost scary to read. Aside from us having totally different jobs I relate to her. She is smart and works hard, but she isn’t really aware of her own feelings.
She gets asked to do a favour for a friend, this lands her in de middle of something sinister. You can just feel it developing. It doesn’t get resolved in this book but I assume the case gets solved in the next book(s). Ryan’s partner/ friend Meaghan is a little bit sketchy but I somehow like her. She seems to dislike Ryan’s choice of lovers and isn’t to keen to talk to her towards the end of the book. Even though she appears pretty chatty in the beginning. I think this will also come back in the other book(s). I can also understand Allison (Ryan’s love interest), struggling with coming out at work. Not wanting to show any PDA, focussing on all the “wrong” things. We all get in our head too much from time to time and that is something that really gripped me about this book.
I read a lot of bad/ mediocre reviews but for me this was one of the better lesbian romance books I’ve read this year.

**2nd Reading** I decided to reread this one so I could finish the series. I have the next two just waiting to be read. I enjoyed this one maybe more the 2nd go around. I think this is a great read, and I started book 2 immediately after finishing this one. I am excited for the next two books. **
This author is new for me, but she had me at cop character. We love cop books, so I couldn't resist. I actually really enjoyed the book. I assume the way it is labeled more will follow, and that makes me happy. While Allison confused me, I actually liked her best. We all grow up and have things we regret and hope to make closure with, and I think the author did a fantastic job of writing Allison's character. Lucia, while an interesting character, really got a raw deal. Everything about that character made me sad. Ryan I didn't much care for until perhaps the end of the book. I have decided she is alright and she can stay. While not my favorite book, it wasn't bad and honestly I will read more in the future.
I wanted to like this book sometime to much information can be bad some areas just get right to the point. The main character was settling when she was with Luce because her heart still belong to to her ex Allison. To me there was no chemistry at all and even towards the end when Luce and Allison did together at the end it still did not feel right. Maybe the second book will be better.

3.5 stars. I really enjoyed this. However, I wish it had focused a little more on its secret service plot, which seemed to hum quietly in the background rather than take a starring role. I also wish it hadn’t ended so abruptly. I get setting up a sequel, but to do so by leaving major plot threads unresolved is frustrating for the reader.
Pretty early on in the read, I was struck with the sinking realization that this would be setting up some long drawn out series. And sure enough...
I'm not really sure what went on with this title--whether it was planned throughout the writing process that this would turn into a series or if it was a last minute push from the publisher-- because it's a mess of setups with no payoffs and little actual action-driven story. It's a shame because there is some actual potential in the main character Ryan O'Connor as a smart ass Secret Service agent, but she's the only one with anything resembling a spark of life. That's roughly where the potential starts and ends.
If this was intended to be a "romance" novel in any way, it's a sharp fail. While there is something of a love triangle somewhat established, there's absolutely no chemistry between any of the sides. For the triangle to work, the reader would need to be somewhat invested in one of the two pairings. Ryan and Luce (current g/f) are lukewarm and are described as together for six months but not girlfriends and no I love yous. And then there's Allison, Ryan's ex. One reviewer described that as sounding like an abusive relationship; I completely concur. Despite Allison being described as the love of Ryan's life, nothing about her felt trust worthy. There was a lot of touching/eye-sexing, but Allison holds all of the power all of the time. Their backstory is described as being force closeted by Allison, but with absolutely no reason why. I'd understand if there was any supporting line about problems with co-workers dating, not being eligible for promotions, or hell just being closeted in professional life, but no reason at all was given. So those are the two relationships we're supposed to rally behind. Um, yeah no.
When I start a series, that perfect initial entry is one that's satisfyingly stand alone, but with a small tease at the end of more to come. Instead, the entire book is setting up what I could only assume would be covered in future installments: -great descriptions about a boss' pirate fixation -general questionable attitude and actions of the aforementioned boss -introduction of upwards of 15-20 characters with little use in the current story, yet long descriptions of history and characteristics -an opening counterfeit investigation that wasn't authorized to begin with -Ryan's sister and their over-described, pretty much going no where other than to be an extremely obvious convenient device pay off relationship
And then there's the pacing. Unless you're riveting by constant "platonic" touching and eye-sex, the "action" in the story doesn't hit until the last 30-40 or so pages. Just as quickly as it starts, it's over.
Finally, I understand that the author is herself a retired Secret Service agent, but man, for us mere mortals, she played fast and loose with the acronyms. To anyone else reading this--good luck both keeping up and keeping track of them.
3.5 rounded up to a 4 star rating. If you're interested in a fun romance, look no further. Actual stop is definitely that. The secret service angle is new and different. But, on the other hand if you're buying this thinking you're getting action adventure and/or a mystery, keep on keepin on. To me the cover is deceptive. It leads me to think this will be a law enforcement procedural. In some spots it does do that and the author has a deft way of including insider information about the life of a secret service agent. The tough part is that all that great groundwork for an actual plot leads to absolutely nowhere. There's even a shooting and lots of stuff but nothing is solved or even mentioned again once the romance jumps to the forefront. I really felt like this was a two parter and the author forgot to tell us. I hope there will be another book and that one will have a beginning, middle, and an ending.
Not a bad effort for a debut. And the chemistry between the leads is very good. The romance is hot. Sadly, the evolution of the main plots are not.
I received a copy of this book from Net Galley for an honest review.
Ryan O'Connor is a Special Agent and currently has a girlfriend. Everything is dandy except for the fact her boss hates her and until her ex-girlfriend appears in New York. Ryan and her ex, Allison Reynolds, will have to work together.
I expected to read more about details of what Ryan O'Connor's job entails and its various aspects since it is the first book and I didn't mind it at all. Ryan's boss does seem a little fishy, I wonder what that's all about and hopefully, it will be answered in the next book.
I enjoyed the angst involved in the story between Ryan and Allison and thought that had believable chemistry. I thought that it was well written how Ryan was distrustful of Allison, as she had good reason to.
Looking forward to reading the next in its series.
I absolutely loved this book! Heartbreak, laugh, drama, suspense...it had it all! I am a sucker for a book with characters that work in what society would usually consider a man’s line of work because as I know from experience, it can be tough. I also love that the characters are written so strongly, that non of that really seems to matter because they have the support of those around them. Can’t wait to read the next one!
I am so happy I stumbled upon Kara McLeod. This series reminds me alot of Max Ellendale’s Four Point. It is so hard to find good WLW books, that meet all the criteria. But kara does that. I couldn’t put this book down, and can’t wait to read the rest.
I didn't intend to read this until I wanted to read book 4 and it would not have made sense to start there. So I decided to start at the beginning and read my way through. It took me a while to read myself into it, but when I got there I enjoyed it.
Ryan (secret service) seems to work at a couple of different, related jobs - sort of different departments. She has an ongoing 'arrangement ' with Lucia a cop. Lucia wants a serious relationship - Ryan is still unsure that she, herself, is relationship material. Allison (also secret service) is her ex. She moved area to a different post and ended their relationship.
Allison arrives back to do a specific job - and has to work with Ryan. This sort of puts the cat among the pigeons of Ryan's life. They still have chemistry. They reunite. They talk and iron out some of their previous difficulties and misunderstandings. Allison has to leave to go to the next job - and Ryan is unsure where they stand. There's a lot of secret service tasks and jargon and a shooting - Ryan is injured and someone else killed.
Written by someone with a secret service background I find interest in all of the mundane tasks that are completed in the story - the admin and things that need to be done in order for everything to run smoothly.
This might sound confusing - but I am confident I have enough knowledge to move on to book 2 - which I am now reading and enjoying.
