Can Mara win the love of a man she’s tried so hard to give to another?
Chicago, 1895
Mara Madison arrives at her sister’s doorstep after a decade of independent world travel. Having at last discovered the faith her family always modeled, she’s determined to make up for the years she’s spent indulging her own whims. Her sister Christa instantly recognizes Mara as a potential bride for her husband’s business partner, Benjamin Esherwood. But Mara has pledged herself to perpetual spinsterhood and charity work since no proper mother-in-law would accept her adventurous past. She also suspects her sister’s family governess is already in love with the handsome businessman, and sets out to use her own matchmaking skills to bring the two together.
So begins the matchmaker's match, a contest between the two sisters to see Benjamin happily married.
When her mother joins the matchmaking endeavor by arriving with Mara's first love, Joshua, in tow, Mara's resolve to remain a spinster is further challenged. Could the love that broke her heart and caused her to abandon society be reignited? Or should she surrender to her feelings for the man she's been trying so hard to match to another?
Maureen Lang has always had a passion for writing. She wrote her first novel longhand around the age of 10, put the pages into a notebook she had covered with soft deerskin (nothing but the best!), then passed it around the neighborhood to rave reviews. It was so much fun she's been writing ever since.
Most of her books are historical, with an emphasis on faith and romance.
What I loved was Maureen's attention to the setting of the book. Beyond the intricacy and slight humor of multiple matchmakers, as the reader you were drawn into the employment conflicts in Chicago.
The Matchmaker's Match, written by Maureen Lang, had me at the blurb! I was truly excited to read this book as it sounded like a great storyline! Once I started the book, it was interesting the first 30% as I got to know the characters. I loved how adventurous Mara was and was excited to see what, if anything would come from her meeting Benjamin! Then....it seemed to get rather tedious with a lot of stuff, but it just wasn't catching my interest, unfortunately. As I advanced through the book, because I wanted to find out what happened, I was finally grabbed from just reading the dialog back to reading it thoroughly at about 86%. I truly loved the ending of the book. Its not a bad book if you don't mind a bit a fluff from the middle. Beginning storyline and ending storyline were awesome!
This book had a captivating storyline, but it was a bit bogged down by extra details. I wanted to know welfare was happening, but kept getting frustrated with pages of extra descriptions.
All that said, I loved Mara's story and fell in love with all the characters (granted, Christa had to grow on me).
I really gave this book an honest effort, but there is only so much self pitying and whining that I can take. yeesh, how many times did she complain that her sister didn't love her and could never appreciate her the way she was and thought she was inferior? It was so obnoxious I had to stop reading before I found a way to enter the realm of books and slapped her for being so stupid.
I think i read this in a matter of 2 days time...I enjoyed the first two books, and really enjoyed this book as well!! I don't know yet if there are any others after this....if so, will be onto that one as well!! And or other works by this author. Thanks for the great read!!
I am a huge fan of MAUREEN LANG. As typically of MS LANG'S writing, THE MATCHMAKER’S MATCH is a unique story with great content.
