What does the Bible say about eating? Are there principles for general health to be found in scripture? In Treasures of Healthy Living, authors Annette Reeder and Dr. Richard Couey tackle the topic in a style that combines reference and Bible study.
This is a program in addition to a reference book. I'm reviewing this book, but there are additional books that make up the Treasure of Healthy Living program. There is a Healthy Treasures Cookbook, and a Treasures of Healthy Nutrition Manual that is available for the program. Throughout the book, the authors refer to topics to look up in one of these other books, as well as references to material on the website.
The program is divided into 12 weeks with each covering a topic related to nutrition and wellness. Those chapters are divided into daily assignments. Since I've only had the book for 2 weeks prior to the review date, I read straight through it without being able to actually take the time to do all the Bible study and do it as a 12-week program. It's also available with a DVD and CD program.
Topics Covered: • Health • Beverages • Grains • Vegetables and fruits • Herbs, Spices, Vinegar • Protein and Meat • Fasting • Sweets • Toxins • Stress and Forgiveness • Exercise • The fullness of Christ and health
Daily assignments include reading and interactive assignments of filling in the blanks. Friday is a little different from the other days. It's called "Fabulous Foodie Friday" and it includes activities to do with a friend who is doing the same study and is an accountability partner.
I like the layout and the length of the studies for each day. It covers a broad array of topics and everything is well documented. I find a few of the Bible study questions to be just regurgitating the answers already given in the scripture I just read, but some ask the reader to apply the material to his or her own life. The scripture references relate to concepts about food, seasonings (salt, herbs, etc.), fasting, and more. The book talks about the "Daniel Challenge" where participants eat the way Daniel did for 21 days (fruits, vegetables, grains, nuts, seeds, and water).
There are so many references to the other two books that it would have been helpful to have all of the materials in order to do a more complete review. This book in itself is not a weight loss book. Readers might lose weight be following some of the principles, but it isn't a diet book. It's more about examining what scripture says about food, eating and more.
It would be nice if there was a topical index in the back to make it easier to find specific topics in the book. But the chapter descriptions are helpful in relocating material that the reader wanted to see again.
Certain features are more helpful for the reader. The "digging deeper" sections contain additional assignments for ways the reader can continue to study the topics.
There are some topics in the book that readers will possible see as hot-button nutrition topics. For example, stevia and agave nectar. The authors promote both in the book, but I've seen research that shows these aren't the perfect foods either.
All in all, it's a pretty good book. The concept lacked a little pizzaz for me, but the content is helpful. The authors tried to lighten up some heavy topics by adding humorous anecdotes here and there. Since this book is just part of the whole program, I think I'd like to see the whole program in action to get an even better idea of what it's all about. I'd give it a 3.5 out of 5 starts (I rounded up since Goodreads doesn't have 1/2 points).
I received a free review copy of the book from Glass Road Public Relations.
If you were to experience the following symptoms, what would you do?
Blood Pressure Changes Fatigue Flushed Skin Headache Infrequent Urination or Dark Yellow Urine Light-Headedness, dizziness, and decreased coordination Loss of appetite Muscle Cramping
Was your first thought to reach for a glass of water or an aspirin? Have you ever had symptoms like these? Stress, headache, back pain, allergies, asthma, high blood pressure, and many serious degenerative health problems are the result of chronic dehydration. According to Dr. Batmanghelidj, all of these ailments can be easily corrected with water.
Is it really that simple and we, in our current lifestyles have complicated our lives and are literally making us sick? The answer is simply yes! This is NOT the way God intended us to live our lives and yet we find ourselves seeking medical care, more pills and still we are no healthier than when we started. The answers can be found in this wonderful Bible Study called, Treasures of Healthy Living by Annette Reeder and Dr. Richard Couey.
This is a week by week plan walking through both the Bible and our kitchens to put us back on a healthier way of life and give us back what we all want in our lives. If we feel healthy, then it affects the remainder of the relationships in our lives, or working relationships, personal relationships with family and friends and so much more.
I was so excited when I was offered the opportunity to review this wonderful new book, based on what God has in store for us through His word and how we are literally killing ourselves through what we are doing to our food, what we drink, how we live, what we store our food in and how we prepare our meals.
Here are some things to consider and are answered in the book:
1. What kind of cookware do you use to prepare your meals? You might just be killing yourself and making yourself ill with the utensils or cookware your using.
2. What is the best beverage to drink for healthy living? Sure we all know water is the best, but water are you drinking yours from?
3. What is the best balance of foods to eat to maintain energy, health and weight? You'd be surprised at this food pyramid and one I am changing immediately!
4. Do you really understand what is in the food you are eating, even though it says healthy? You might be surprised at what lines the cans of the foods you are buying and how they can be making you sick.
There is so much wisdom in the Bible so it only seems fair that in order to maintain the bodies God gave us, we should seek His answers to what we should be doing. I think this is a MUST read for all churches, Bible Study Groups, and those seriously looking to get back their health in the right way. We must stop letting society dictate how we eat because we are so much busier today than we were tomorrow. This book can put you on the right path today!
I received this book, Treasures to Healthy Living by Annette Reeder and Dr. Richard Couey compliments of Glass Roads Public Relations and Pleasant Word Publishers for my honest review and I can't wait to get started on this journey. I would easily rate this book a 5 out of 5 stars! It's never to late to start and I would love to start a Book Club/Bible Study Group using this book for those that want to join me. Simply send me an email and then pick up a copy of this book today! Let's take back our bodies and get healthy once again!
I haven't been this excited about a book in a long time.
For the past few years, I've been trying to learn about healthy eating - what God wants us to eat and why. Mostly, I've wanted to know how to help my children make good food choices so that they can avoid my family history of heart disease and diabetes.
Treasures of Healthy Living has all the information that I need - and much more - for this journey, all in one handy-dandy book.
Annette Reeder's family was suffering from lots of aches, pains, and other medical issues when someone suggested that she find out what God had to say about food. That launched her family's healthy eating journey, and this book shares what she learned.
Each chapter focuses on a different aspect of being healthy - a food group or issue - like proteins, sugars, or stress - and then breaks each topic down into segments of Bible study, short stories, and scientific explanation. The information is very easy to understand but clearly shows both the Biblical basis for the information and the science behind it. It's rare to find both.
This book is super detailed and yet concise - the information is broken down well so that it's easy to find the information that you need, and yet Reeder's explanations are full of scientific information so that most laypeople will learn a lot about each topic.
Following Reeder's plan for a healthy lifestyle in American culture would not be easy; chemicals, preservatives, and fake stuff are all around us, from our clothing to our food to our cleaning products, but whether you follow every step or make the changes that you can, you'll find many ways to become healthier in this book. Addendums in the back of the book make it easy to assess where you are in your health living journey and help you to reflect about what steps God might wish you to take to become healthier.
My only issue with Treasures of Healthy Living is that there is apparently a nutrition manual which is meant to go alongside this book. It is referred to occasionally throughout the book, and I would have loved to explore that, as well. There is also a Healthy Living class, but I don't have any information about it.
All in all, I love this book. I've already shared it with several people and plan to show it off to several more. If you have any interest at all in living a healthy lifestyle, this is a must-read.
I received a free copy of Treasures of Healthy Living from Glass Road Public Relations in exchange for an honest review.
Treasures of Healthy Living by Annette Reeder and Dr. Richard Couey
A Journey Unveiling God's Plan for Ultimate Health and Relationships
Treasures of Healthy Living is a 12 week study using the Scriptures as the pathway to healthy living. But Treasures of Healthy Living goes beyond food to restore us to health. ToHL focuses on the whole person – our relationships, our attitudes, and our outlook on life. When our life becomes healthy we become more balanced in all aspects of our life.
Body, mind and spirit must all be in balance to achieve health, but we can't find what we need in the culture of today or the fad of the minute. But where do you find the treasure map to the treasure of health? It can be found in God's Word and when we read and study His Word we will find the map that will lead us to the treasure we seek.
God created us in His image and He gave us the plan to follow and the tools we need to follow it. ToHL includes daily Bible readings to help us focus on that week's theme. Each week focuses on a different aspect of healthy living. The first week is focused preparing us for the journey we are about to take. Weeks two through six focus on the various aspects of our diet from the seasons we use to the beverages we drink. Weeks seven through twelve we learn how to guard the treasure of health we discovered in the first part ToHL. We learn the importance of reducing stress, forgiving, exercising, being thankful and laughing. When we find the joy in our life we are healthier – physically and mentally.
Treasures of Healthy Living includes an action plan for the 12 weeks, a health assessment chart so that you can chart your improving health, and the Daniel Fast Journal.
This journey will enable you to grow as a person, in your relationships with others and with God, and you will learn self-disciple. Treasures of Healthy Living is just the beginning of life-long journey. Are you ready to change?
I was provided a copy of this title for the purpose of this review by the publisher through Glass Road Public Relations Promotions.
I was very interested in reviewing this book when I was asked to partly because of my fibromyalgia and because of my need to stay up to date on research and avoid processed foods & also because I was curious about what Annette had to share from their perspective. I was very interested in the facts that they were able to remove their prescriptions from their life and also because they had such a dramatic result from the changes they made.
I was very impressed with the amount of research this book contains and I really liked how each chapter is broken up in to smaller chunks. Each chapter is made up of 5 days of a very indepth study in scripture and nutrition as well as fitness. The main focus of the book is to make God and the Bible your life foundation with food and nutrition falling into place.
Treasures of Healthy Living is designed for study groups from church, between friends and spouses and it can also be used by an individual. Just so you know some of the days study are very long and I would see myself breaking it down into much smaller chunks as I'm just not able to focus for the length it would take to get through that day's lesson. Some of the days (take week 1, day 4 is 12 pages long and it covers "Tools for the Journey" that you will need.)
There are DVD's to extend the lesson for bible study groups and the book I received is a combination bible study and workbook. You can find out more about the program at http://www.designedhealthyliving.com.
I received a copy of Treasures of Healthy Living to review on GivingNSharing. I was not required to give a positive review and no money exchanged hands.
This book teaches readers how to live healthy, happy lives through God. I think anyone could benefit from reading it. Treasures of Healthy Living is full of easy, delicious meals that left me with more energy and full for a longer period of time. Most of the recipes could be cooked by anyone, I’m pretty young and I could do it! After eating healthy and feeling good, I noticed other areas of my life improve. I noticed I could focus for longer and learn more. My friends said I seem more upbeat and I am accomplishing more. Treasure of Healthy Living lets you understand what is in your food, as well. Often, I thought I was buying good food, but really, I was making myself sick. Even the cooking utensils and tools I was using were not truly healthy. Reeder and Couey are helping me feel closer to God and be a healthier person. I give this book five out of five stars and recommend it to anyone who wants to live a better life, closer to God. Personally, I think that when you feel good and know you are caring for your body, it is easier to sense God’s presence in our lives.
I loved this bible study. It really showed the value of eating a balanced and nutritional diet by eating the foods God provided in as close to natural form as possible.
