After many years of struggling through learning Chinese characters, this book connected everything together. It was an aha! moment in Chapter 1, 'components'; Chinese characters number in the thousands, however there are about 200 'components' that make up the characters. It turns out if one learns the most frequently used 100 components, you will quickly know over 80% of Chinese characters. Hmm, memorize 1,000's of characters, or learn 100 components ...

The remainder of this short book provides some examples and that is it. After reading it, I went off on a different tangent, hunting down the components, learning them and the stories behind them. Chinese characters went from memorizing them (not terribly exciting) to being very interesting.

As a further comment, perhaps other books did mention 'components', or, perhaps I was just not reading the right books, likely I missed an instructor's comments about them; regardless, this very short book connected everything for me. Happy I found it.
