**'Anyone who puts pen to paper can have a prose style...write about what really interests you, whether it is real things or imaginary things and nothing else..' Dreamy series! Nice introductory start to a good series:- because it was well written, had a nice pace, solid history of what it takes to being in the wolf population, intense action when needed, enjoyed everything that went on between both leads their passion, chemistry, the energy and sparks that they both bought out from one another because it happen the instant & minute they met--a human and a wolf having variations in their characters but well rounded in different personality and motivation. The author gave us the readers some very graphic sex scenes that were really steamy, hot and sure to make the average lesbian & woman reading this book blush. In addition this storyline had a good set of supporting cast who we grew to know and will maybe become main players in book #2--the ending do leaves us greedy readers wanting to know what happen so there is a cliffhanger and luckily this series is continuing-- very good sort of ending!
3.5 Stars. As I mentioned before, I am craving paranormal reads since Halloween is coming up. I needed to take a break from what I’ve been reading and get to a book that had been in my library for years. This was the only book by Frame I had not read yet, which is a little funny considering my love for paranormal anything. If I remember correctly it is actually the second book she had written. You can absolutely tell reading this older book, how much she has since grown now in her writing. This is not one of her best. If you look at the reviews they are all over the map. The way I approached this book was to just have fun with it. If you look at it strictly for entertainment purposes and don’t take it too seriously it is an enjoyable read.
Pin mentioned in her review this book is in the similar vein as Gill McKnight's Garoul series and L.L. Raand's (Radclyffe) Midnight Hunters series. I agree with that but this wasn’t on the same level as those books. It doesn’t quite have the imagination as those other books do, but it’s a solid werewolf story.
What had me actually rolling my eyes the hardest was the sex scenes. As others have mentioned they were a bit out there for sure. Plus the ending is really sappy to say the least. But even with the complaints I read this book in one sitting. I was entertained and it’s the kind of read I was looking for. I’m interested in reading the new novella that continues the series. Now that Frame has improved her writing, I’m curious to see if the next book is even better.
Werewolf books have been a trend for a while now. What is it about shapeshifting individuals that we love so much? Is it because we love dogs? Is it because they are super powerful? Whatever the reason is I am drawn to reading these types of books especially when it involves a romantic element. Enter Jenny Frame’s second book, Heart of the Pack.
Caden Wolfgang is the second in command of the Wolfgang pack. She has always considered herself a lone wolf. She has never felt the pull to settle down and find a mate with any of the other wolves in her pack. Caden feels she is destined to be alone and as sad as that makes her, she has decided to put the pack and its needs above herself.
Selena “Lena” Miller is an outsider in her family. Her family refers to her as the baby elephant, a-hole alert! She has been subjected to a lifetime of ridicule because she does not fit into her family’s “perfect” image. Her domineering mother has driven Lena to the breaking point and has chastised her time and time again about the size of her thighs and how she is consistently letting the family down. This anxiety ridden accountant decides to flee her family’s clutches and comes to Venator Industries in Wolfgang County to do an audit for her accounting firm.
I as a rule of thumb I try to always pick books that I have a general interest in reading. As the years have gone on I have found a few of the werewolf books in this genre to be very fun, adventurous and have a great romance to them. So going into this book I tried to let all the preconceived notions and past stories go. I liked Jenny Frame’s last book, not love, but I did like it. To me, Heart of the Pack was a bit of a letdown, I expected more from this one.
First off the story is a little clunky. It was clunky in the fact that the story just didn’t flow all that well to me. Another issue is that there is a backstory that’s at play, and for a minute I literally thought I missed a book in the series. Don’t laugh that has actually happened to me more than once! This backstory is immediately thrust onto the reader and I felt a little lost. Factor in now a human coming into a company full of werewolves, Lena knows that things are a little off but just can't figure out why Caden is so strong. Oh come on! The two, Caden and Selena are immediately at odds with each other, both harboring ill will because of their own personal hang-ups. The thing is that their interactions didn’t feel natural. Their relationship was stiff and felt artificial. I never invested in their story, and once they begin dating it got even worse. How is that even possible! Now for what really resonated with me, and honestly I wish I could eradicate from my brain is the sex scenes. If you have read any of L.L. Raand’s werewolf series you have read graphic werewolf scenes. No big deal. That is totally not it. What really sealed the deal, and made this book a solid NOPE, is when characters are in the throes of passion screaming “fill me up” or “fill up my belly” or “I’m going to fill you up mate”. What the hell, eww and total gross out. Why, just why. Who finds that sexy? Why the belly, no really why the belly!
So this book just wasn’t for me. It could totally be me in the minority on this one. This is just my feelings on a book. My observations aside, the rest of the book is pretty standard. There are conflicts, but I didn’t think any of them were anything that hasn’t been done before and seemed a bit contrived and didn't really add anymore substance to the overall story.
My personal rating a 2.5
I was given this book by Netgalley and Bold Strokes Books in return for an honest review.
Heart of the Pack is so to say a hybrid between Gill McKnight's Garoul series and L.L. Raand's Midnight Hunters series. I liked it more than Midnight Hunters, but less then Garouls. Jenny Frame is a quite good storyteller with a vivid imagination, and this first Wolfgang County novel promises an exciting series. I read Frame's first published novel and some of her online ficton, where it is obvious that she loves very distinctive butch-femme (even very butch - very femme) relationship dynamics for all of her main characters. This may be off-putting to some, so beware of that. It is known that wolf shapeshifters romance novels are ideal for that kind of pairings, so we can expect more of the Wolfgang pack dynamics in the future.
Aug 2018 : With the release of Soul of the Pack, I decided to re-read Frame’s earlier books “The Real Housewives of Wolfgang Co.” an early online short/novella story (now unavailable) that Frame re-wrote in “ Heart of the Pack” adding Caden & Selena’s storyline. I enjoyed Heart, maybe more than the first time around. I’m increasing my rating to 3.75 rounding up to 4 Stars. Just because for me Frame is so readable.
3 Stars This is a paranormal-werewolf book. Salena (human) is hired as an auditor/accountant to Wolfgang Co., a company that is owned by a werewolf pack (Wolfgang). Caden Wolfgang is second in command for the Wolfgang pack. She considers herself a lone wolf after not able to find a mate and it was foretold by her grandmother that she would never find a werewolf mate. There was interesting world building but I couldn't help by compare it to Jae's Second Nature series and Gill McKnight's Garoul series. Unfortunately if fell a bit short, especially compared to Second Nature. However, the book is very readable and I really liked both lead characters. In August 2018, Soul of the Pack, Part 1.5 which features Kyra Wolfgang will be available. I'm definitely reading this. No surprise, I read all of Frames books and stories.
A dark threat lurks into the shadow. Someone want to destroy the pack, a deadly enemy. Meanwhile a strong bonding develops between two main characters. A bonding that can be a burden but also something amazing. Plenty of actions and mayhem. I loved how the pack has their own infrastructure, their own environment within the world of humans. They are all one family and stand up for each other. All the characters are well shaped and I felt immediately immersed in their world. I really loved Eden and Dante. What a great mated pair. Caden is a tough challenging and mesmerizing character. She is my hero. I definitely enjoyed all the steamy scenes, all with passionate sex. The lead are strong women, the story well plotted and beautiful written. It's about love regardless of ancestry or future prospects. It got me instantly and I didn't want it to end. Please give us a sequel Ms. Frame! Check out this book. I highly recommend this to all of you.
Loved it! I liked Caden and Selena's characters very much, there was strength as well as weaknesses in both women that made for good chemistry between them. Though Caden was a dominant she still possessed weaknesses brought on by the lost of her parents and the hatred she held close, also for the feelings she tried denying in the presence of Selena. As for Selena the thought of her family and their feelings towards her made her weak and insecure and those insecurities were threatening her own feelings for Caden, together they conquered those weaknesses and came out on top. Looking forward to reading more on the Wolfgang Pack.
I think this book is one you either love or you don't. I am a huge fan of werewolf books and was very excited when this book was available. Maybe a little too excited because as I was reading I quickly became disappointed. I loved the idea and concept especially having Selena with anxiety which I thought would bring an interesting aspect to the book.
Unfortunately I just struggled with the characters. I felt there wasn't really a good plan on the character relationship. It seemed like things were done just cause and not planned where things unfolded throughout the story (I hope that makes sense). The villain was a complete disappointment.
I am very sad about not enjoying it as I had read a number of reviews that made me very excited about reading this book. Unfortunately this one just wasn't for me.
I was given this book by NetGalley for an honest review.
I like this book! Tbh, i rarely read a book with werewolves. It’s not my kind of book. I know i’m going to enjoyed it but i just dont have that urge to read any of it when i see one unless when i feel like want to try different setting once in a while. And here i am.
I enjoyed this book alots. Both main characters were adorable together and their chemistry were up the notch. The villain also brought the intensity to the story as well. It kind of brought me on edge. I was kind of confused a bit on how Dante got to made Eden pregnant since both of them are female, but it’s going explain afterward. So all good. I found it’s cute when Caden didnt seem to know how to deal or act around Lena. Like she picked Lena up into her arms when she said she was tired. And Lena asked back what was she doing. Their love making scenes were quite hot and steamy. But it kind of weird me out when Lena told Caden to ‘fill up her belly’ during doing it. I cant stop myself from making a face and bury my face in my bed. Urghh now i made myself feel awkward here. Nevermind!
I received this book from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
Just couldn't get into this one. First of all, it starts off as though it's part of a series, I was a few pages in and actually went to the author's page to see if I'd missed the first book. The backstory between Dante and Leroux (and by extension Eden) felt like it must have already been established somewhere else. Honestly, this book may have made more sense if it was a sequel, because without the actual backstory Leroux's motivation seemed weak, and cartoonish.
Cade and Lena were also not great protagonists. Mostly because Lena was one of the weakest leads I've had the misfortune of having to read in quite awhile. Obviously there are stories with lead characters who have horrible families, but this is a woman who continually allows her mother to refer to her as a baby elephant. Lord.
I also had trouble with the sex scenes once we got there. I don't mind the whole dom/sub thing, but the 'fill my belly' thing was beyond gross. What the hell? And Cade constantly referring to Lena as 'goddess' also set my teeth on edge. Just, no. The only thing I did like about their relationship was that Cade was constantly reinforcing a positive body image for Lena, even if it was in some dubiously squicky ways sometimes.
I don't think I'll be revisiting this pack. Jae's Second Nature series and Rad's Midnight Hunt series are better shapeshifter/werewolf type stories if that's what you're after.
Difficult to decide between 3 and 4 stars for this one. I thoroughly enjoyed 85% of this book. There was very little world building in the beginning; the reader is dumped in the middle of a complex community so it took a little bit of work to sort a few things out.
The vernacular was a problem; I wasn't a fan of 'mater' and 'pater'. Also, so many authors use a strict dominant/submissive paradigm. I just like some wiggle-room there. It's such a limiting character base. Admittedly, Frame writes some excellent characters while using this system, it's just a shame they are constantly referred to by their rank/place.
Otherwise, a good read. I liked seeing Selena's growth. It was interesting to see her self-confidence wax and wane as I find this more believable than a sudden boost and everything's fine. Her family is completely over the top. They could have been toned down a little while still remaining a heavy, negative influence. Watching Caden struggle was well written - humourous in parts and frustrating in others.
4.5 stars I received a copy of this book from Inked Rainbow Reads in return for an honest review. This book was fun, with an engaging, energetic pace that kept me turning pages. I enjoyed Selena's journey from anxious and beaten down to confident and proud. I also liked watching Caden find someone to end her loneliness, to give her the home and family she so desperately craved. This seems like the first in a series, since Leroux survives not only the first encounter with the Alpha Dante, but also the second confrontation at the end. This indicates further strife between the two packs. The fact that Leroux still lives is rather vexing, but if there are further books to the story, I suppose it would be okay. The story is good, and I loved reading it, but at the same time, some of the writing seemed a bit simplistic. It felt like this was a first novel, definitely the first foray into this genre, and the depth of characterization and setting just missed being there. I was a little surprised by that, having listened to Frame's first book in audio, but I truly enjoyed the book, and am looking forward to her next release.
Caden is the second in command of the Wolfgang pack. She longs for a mate and family but believes she is destined to be alone. Caden also doesn't trust humans due to a past tragedy. Selena takes a job with the Wolfgang pack which gives her a break from her family's constant criticism. Caden and Selena have to work closely together sparks fly between them from the very beginning.
I loved everything about Wolfgang County. The pack dynamics were very interesting. I liked that being a leader in the pack depended on strength and dominance not gender. Also that all mating pairs were celebrated not just male/female pairings. The mater/pater relationship made this wolf story feel fresh and new.
The story had action and was well paced. I can't wait to find out what's up next for the Wolfgang pack. This is my first time reading a book by Jenny Frame but I definitely plan to read more.
I received this book from Netgalley for an honest review.
I liked the story, wouldn't mind if it was made into a series. Unfortunately it was not worth my 9,99 dollars. It's more of 5,99 or 6,99 book.
I had some small issues:
1. the use of gestures to greet de alpha and second of the pack. It was not the usual lowering of the eyes or showing throat. It was a combination of things we're used to and some other new ways to greet that I found weird, irritating and a bit bothersome to read.
2. Calling the beta of the pack second, was also weird.
3. Calling the dominant female and submissive female parents, mater and pater was for me also bothersome. it's like you're trying to let go of the heterosexual and heterogene labels and societal expectations, but you still can't quite make a break from it, so we settle for mater and pater. It would have been better to make up a totally new word for it's use and not use an even more masculine sounding substitute for mother and father.
All these little thing detracted from my enjoyment of the book. For people who can ingore this, they might find this a great book instead of a good or ok book
I haven't read a paranormal for a while so I was looking for a good lesfic paranormal book. BTW I really want to read a good vampire novel, so if anyone has any recommendations for a vampire book (preferably lesfic) then please hit me up! While I really enjoy the paranormal genre, recently its been very hit or miss for me. While this was a very easy read and enjoyable book, it can't say it is the most breathtaking or original take on werewolves. It leans much harder on the side of predictable and insta-love for the romance, but it is still undeniably a fun and entertaining book. So I guess if you are looking for pure entertainment factor rather than technical aspects and a unique plot, then this would still be a great book to pick up.
I think the writing of the book in general was quite stiff and hard to really enjoy. While I don't mind in general if the writing was like this, it also translated to the romance. The romance between Kaden and Selena felt a bit forces and very much tell rather than show. Especially once they ended up together, everything just went super fast and any aspect of believability was kinda thrown out the window. In saying all these things, it might seem like I didn't like the romance but that really wasn't true at all. Even though it was very predictable and felt artificial in places, some part of me just really enjoyed it and rooted for the couple anyway. This is the reason why I would still recommend this book and enjoyed it overall, despite finding that it had quite a few technical and plotting problems.
There is a wider story in this book with villains and the like. The paranormal aspects (purely werewolves if I remember correctly) was good but again quite predictable. Probably if you are a die-hard paranormal fan, the lack of development and complexity with the paranormal aspects may be a bit frustrating. But if you just want an enjoyable, light-hearted and easy read then I would still recommend this one.
3.4 star rating There are not too many ways out there to infuse something new into the wolf and vamp genre so obviously lots of repeats. That said, memorable repeats are the ones that produce characters worthy of remembrance. This was close and enjoyed.
Selena and Caden sitting in a tree, k-i-s-s-i-n-g...
The first time I read this book was 4 years ago. It was my third lesfic book and second from this author. I fell head over heels in love with Byron and Amelia from Hunger, so I sought out other books by Frame and found this one. Four years later, I could probably recite to you all my favourite moments in this adorable shifter tale.
I can remember the first time reading Heart and how it took me about a third of the way into the story until I warmed up to Caden. She was different from the previous characters I had read. I couldn't get a read on her for some reason and I found her not interesting. Selena aka Lena was the one who pulled me in and kept me there. She was an anxious young woman with very little experience in, well, anything in life really, but she was intelligent, sweet, and beautiful. All her life she had been beaten down by her "stick up their asses" family and it affected her mental well-being to the point where she saw herself as nothing, a nobody. However, after moving to Wolfgang County and working alongside Caden, she, in the words of Caden "grew some teeth" whenever Caden's natural dominance came out and started ordering Lena around. With her family, Lena bowed down, with Caden, she was ready for a throw down right there in the office. I enjoyed their verbal tussles and how it ruffled the dominant's fur, which naturally, amped up the sexual tension between them.
I didn't give up on Caden, I gave her a "Second" chance (see what I did there?) I read the story again, and after, I understood the attraction the second time around. Caden had been a lone wolf all her life with zero hope for a mate, a wolf mate, that is. She longed for love, someone to make a den with, someone she could come home to and feel that warmth and safety of having a mate. By not having that and being surrounded by her pack who were all mated, Caden's personality on the surface was gruff and tough. She hated humans, and for good reason, but when Selena came along, her natural DNA, her wolf, called to Selena because it knew that was her mate, but Caden refused to believe it and treated Selena less than favourably. Over time, though, Caden started to give into her wolf's needs and desires, and warmed up to the beautiful human.
Caden and Lena's courtship was so cute. Just utterly cute. There was a lot of sexual tension, but their slow moving relationship reminded me more of two teenagers fumbling with each other. Caden had never experienced love before, but was no virgin given that she was a wolf, and shifter fans know that wolves are rather randy. Then there was Lena who's self-esteem was in the gutter when she met Caden and didn't think anyone, let alone a woman like Caden who was tall, strong, and sexy as all get-out, would be interested in her. Like I said, a lot of fumbling. Caden's love, however, and her words of encouragement, lifted Lena's spirits and confidence that she started to believe in herself.
I don't like spoilers but I guess it's no secret that Caden and Lena fall into bed together. The sex--was in a word that only I can describe as--hungry. They were ravenous for each other. And I must say, that I liked the little spin Frame added to that whole, "how female dominant wolves have sex" thing. I read older reviews and some were complaining that a clitoris didn't work that way. Well, no, in our world they don't, but in a world where there are shifters where female dominant wolves can get other female wolves pregnant, then yes, the clitoris works that way. It's called magic, open your minds ;)
Frame wrote a darling shifter tale that was more focused on the romance aspect of it while the villain/revenge portion took a backseat, as opposed to some shifter stories that have an even balance of both or the villain part of it dominates the romance part. I liked that we got more time with Caden and Lena, it was necessary. And did I mention how adorable they were? I recommend you read this whole series. 5 stars.
Amazing Emotionally abused by her family, Selena jumps at the chance to get away by taking a job for Venator in Wolfgang County. Caden is second in command at Venator and is none too happy to have an outsider come to work for the company, especially in her department. As Cade gets to know Lena she begins to have strong feelings for the girl and it is not one sided. With a mortal enemy on the loose and looking for revenge, can Cade and the others keep their families safe or will tragedy strike before Cade and Lena can begin a relationship? What will Lena say and do when she finds out the secret of Cade's and all of Wolfgang County? To find out you must read the book and I will tell you that you will be glad you did, its a great story.
I could really feel the pain Lena's family inflicted on her. She was so insecure and self loathing, full of anxiety and yet she was strong enough to break away and stand up for herself when she feels like Cade is trying to control her. I also really like how quickly the lone wolf took to Lena, doing her best to help the young woman's confidence while desperately fighting her attraction.
The secondary characters were wonderful as well. They were so important to the story. They offered support, love and helped Lena settle into Wolfgang county, showing her how different this place was to any other. A place where she was free from the disapproval of her birth family and where she was treated as a member of the community, accepted by everyone.
There really isnt anything I did not like about this book, including the open ending that leaves room for a sequel should Ms Frame desire. I am very happy to have added this book to my collection.
I really don't know what to think about this book. From the word go I as confused, I am pretty sure that the prologue was not edited let alone the rest of the book. I read the prologue and asked myself, " What the hell just happened?", so I read it again...still nothing. After deciding to move on from there I started to have tentative liking of the story. I found it to be very much like the midnight hunt series but I enjoyed it more than that series, it was also a bit like Jae's shifter series...basically it is like a lot of shape shifter series out there. Frame seems to like to go to extremes with her characters personality's, as she said their are protectors and carers, which I usually have a problem with but I think the puppy dog like behavior of Caden made me like her a bit more than I would have if she had started to control Selena, as I have seen authors like Robin Roseau do in there novells, which is a real turn off. Hopefully there is a follow up because if not my three will have to drop to a two because this is definitely not a stand alone book.
I have been reading this author's work for a couple years and she keeps getting better and better. This book originally started as a short story I believe, with the focus on the Alpha and Mater. I was concerned when I heard that it had been rearranged. But as usual, Jenny brings it all out, slaps it on the table, and you have no choice but to fall in love.
The dynamics of a wolf pack can be complex, yet simplistic. What I mean by that is once you understand your place in the pack it becomes obvious how vital each member is for each of their distinct skills and how that holds the pack together. For those that like a slower burn, you will be happy, for those that like dominant/submissive stories, you will be happy, and there is a bit of intrigue and death thrown in just for good measure. I must say, I cried for Dante & Eden. I have yet to read something by this author that I didn't enjoy. Give her shot, it's worth the money! Keep writing, Jenny, because I am hoping for a sequel to this!
Selena "Lena" Miller moves to Wolfgang County to get away from her family and gets a job working for Dante Wolfgang. There she meets Caden Wolfgang, the second in command in the pack. It's hard for Caden to trust Lena as a human killed her parents in a drunk driving accident. Sparks fly in more ways than one between the two characters.
I wanted to like this book more than I did but I couldn't just quite get into the story that much. I thought it was an okay development of Lena and Caden's love story as they clashed too much at the beginning. Even though Caden meant well in giving orders to Lena, Lena was trying to get away from people controlling her life.
I haven't read any werewolf romances before, but had enjoyed the romance in Jenny Frame's "A Royal Romance", so thought I'd give this one a go. Unfortunately I think perhaps werewolf romances are not for me.
The butch/femme relationship was more pronounced in this book, with the wolves defined by a Dominant/submissive dynamic that allowed for the introduction of magic lesbian pregnancy-causing Dominant clitorises. Again, if the character had identified as trans it might have seemed less intrusive, but she was a female werewolf.
I found the timidness of Selena annoying and the misunderstandings between her and Caden a bit silly, especially all the insistence that Selena eat fattening food coming over as odd and uncomfortable, rather than body positive. And it is, of course, because Cade is a werewolf and Selena doesn't understand her werewolf ways.
I really enjoyed this book and all these amazing characters and even the plot, but I feel as if the ending was super rushed... and that bummed me out since it’s what’s more fresh in my mind. I have so many questions still and i have so much I wanna read about this couple still... Did Caden manage to get Lena pregnant? What more did Eden’s blood do to Lena? Can she heal super fast now too? I honestly just wanted a few more chapters to read about a more proper ending for this amazing couple. I know there are more books but from what I’ve seen they are for different couples. I honestly hope the author will someday write a short story about this couple to let us see what they are up to and what happened after the mating happened.
This book was...ok. It wasn't unreadable. It wasn't particularly great either. Both MCs felt kind of flat and static. All the side characters were one-dimensional. The antagonist was a cliched caricature of a villain. Honestly, the entire plotline with the antagonist was completely unnecessary for the rest of the book. Like, if it had been taken out...the book would have been completely the same.
The romance between Caden and Selena was...problematic for me. They went from antagonistic toward each other, constantly sniping at each other, to being madly in love with barely any like actual work being done. Neither changed themselves or anything about the other, but suddenly the person that drove them crazy and angered them is the most perfect person. I could kind of believe it from Caden's perspective with the whole fated mates thing, but Selena falling for Caden just made her feel weaker, and less important as a character.
There was no third act breakup. There is no real drama between them once they become a couple. Very flat romance overall.
I never ever imagined I’d be reading a werewolf story. I only picked up this book because I’m a Jenny Frame fan. But I absolutely loved it, and not only for all the things I love her other works, but even more so for the werewolf parts. If you’re familiar with the author’s style, but aren’t sure about the paranormal stuff, I think you’ll have a good time reading this story. It’s your usual Jenny Frame story, but in a different setting. It’s a good entertaining read.
