Everything, as far as Dee could tell, was a laugh to Hazel and Abbie. They were just the kind of friends she needed. When Dee's traumatized family start a new life, she is relieved to find two uncomplicated, fun-loving friends. But with the onset of problems for one, and a controlling boyfriend influencing the other, Dee notices frightening parallels with her own troubles. Is she seeing things clearly, though? And will her efforts to help mean revealing family secrets—secrets they so desperately want to keep hidden?
Hmm, I really did not like this one. Firstly what is with constantly changing characters at the most inconvenient moments? It was wildly confusing and really annoying. Also what happened with the plot twist? It totally fell short with 1 page explaining it with little detail but an ungodly amount of build-up! I don't think I once entered this dystopian society because of how clunky the writing was. The characters were also lacking depth and plain annoying in some cases (Abby!). I feel we could have got more explanation from the dad or grandparents but it never happened. I did enjoy the theme of DV in the case of a woman abusing a man, again could have been explored more. It had such great potential but fell short in various ways. 2 stars.
