Beautifully illustrated with nostalgic illustrations of a range of beautiful blooms, this book includes a diverse range of poems, from verses celebrating the beginning of spring with the emergence of the snowdrops, daffodils, and bluebells to poems that honor the summer color of asters, the heady scent of jasmine, and the brazen sunflower. The classic poets are featured including Shakespeare, Alfred, Lord Tennyson, Thomas Hardy, Walt Whitman, Emily Dickinson and Seamus Heaney. There's also a range of rich poetry from less-famous names which have stood the test of time and which evoke nature’s beauty.
Interesting, well chosen wide range of flower poems. Lively illustrations. A nice hardback book, received as a present. So why only a one star rating? The font is tiny. The lines are close together. So it’s hard to read. Lots of white space round the text of most poems...readability even worse when text is on purple pages. Prime example of contemporary design compacting the words, and obscuring their meaning. This nice-looking small hardback is labelled “ National Trust” so sold in their shops. The editor’s name is not on the cover, nor anywhere inside the book. I suspect Samuel Carr didn’t like the way this good book has been ruined by tiny font.
One thing I love, is to find poetry that brings out the joy in my soul and to think about beautiful things like these flower poems. It has some unique and beautiful artwork inside to enjoy while you visualize the flowers written about. For me, the hardest part for me to enjoy was that many of the poems were written in the 1600-1800s and I was hoping to read more contemporary works. But that’s my own issue. This was a great book!
This is a beautiful book but is disappointing. The font , as has already been said in some reviews, is too small and the reader has to work hard to read it which ruins and breaks up the rhythm of the poems. Whether these poems are actually favourite Flower poems is for each reader to decide. Personally they aren't and are also not the best introduction to poetry and I love poetry. The illustrations are lovely but it really is a case of not judging this lovely book by its cover.
This is a beautiful book, for its collection of poems as much as for the pictures that accompany them. Although most poems were not really for me, I still loved reading and looking through it.
