Compared with most YA, the story of Fall of the Dragon Prince is unraveled rather slowly, but that's a good thing. It is a well-paced novel with a fantastic story and awesome characters.

After the revered king Toran passes, he leaves the kingdom with five heirs, hidden from the world, spread far and wide. This story follows two main characters: Torith and Reann. I loved both of them. They are so oppositely different from each other and I think that is part of the appeal of this book. You have Torith, on one side of the kingdom, facing physical trials as he prepares for a cross-country race on dragon back. If that sentence on its own wasn't enough to convince you to read this, you also have Reann, a nosy know-it-all palace ward sleuthing around the palace trying to unravel the mystery of the heirs.

The supporting characters left me a little bit disappointed, but after events unfolded in the book, I am excited to see will happen to the main characters and how these supporting characters will play a role (or not) in the future. Because all of this was resolved, it still gets my five stars.

The ending wasn't all too surprising, but the way everything came together at the end was great. Often when I read YA, everything is left on a cliffhanger and it leaves me with more questions than I had at the beginning of the book. This one definitely didn't answer everything, but it had a clear ending that left me satisfied with the book's conclusion while making me excited for when the next book comes out.

This had all the makings of a fantastic high fantasy novel. A king who united five kingdoms into one dies and leaves behind five separate heirs that must be found, all while darkness is gathering? Dragons, heros, villains and and heroine is who is a librarian? Yes!

I was seriously disappointed in this one. It took me over a month to read--unheard of, I know, but I just couldn't get into it. The world-building is sloppy and all over the place. We've got this vague magic system of awakenings and rises and falls, and a backstory that flits about all willy-nilly. Toran, the dead king, has this crazy ex-fiancee who apparently stole something and is going to destroy the world...and yet isn't mentioned in the present time at all.

There are a ton of battles, swordfights, dragon races and dragon fights, all of which are tactically confusing as hell. The main characters are also frustrating. Terith is a champion dragon rider/warrior who is stringing along three women, and Reann is in a weird relationship with her "boss" (some dude she decided to help with a research project because he's interesting and hot). And Toran. Why, Toran? Why? You knew this was going to happen and you knew you were going to die with your destiny unfinished, so why didn't you tell anyone about, hell, anything??

I received this ARC from NetGalley for an honest review.

This was a great story, brilliantly told and very creative. King Toran who is now dead left a glimmer of hope for peace in the 5 realms. This book follows the story of Terith and Reann. I must say, Reann was my favorite of the two. She is the intellectual, Terith is the muscle & dragon rider. This book has lots of action and a complex puzzle to unravel. There are hints of a lost compass that can change fate and a dark evil coming. The more I read, the less I could put it down. I am anxiously awaiting book 2 of this trilogy.

Love the fantasy world that is described, especially the land of the dragons which I found very detailed and realistic. The book seemed a bit slow at the beginning, but that didn't last. Once it picked up, it moved fast and furiously to the end. Perhaps the best praise I can give is that I was extremely disappointed when I finished the book and remembered, it's the first book in a series.

Although he died several years ago, King Toran is still revered throughout the kingdom as the one who brought the five realms and eventual peace to the country. But without an heir to rule in his place, it is doubtful peace will remain.

In "The Fall of the Dragon Prince" by Dan Allen, 17-year-old Reann, a longtime servant in Toran’s castle in Erdal, is obsessed with the idea of locating one of the king’s heirs and installing him or her onto the throne. Although Reann has scoured the library’s books for most of her life in search of clues to the hidden heirs, she is far from her goal. Fortunately, a mysterious visitor comes to the castle, seemingly with the same quest. Reann just isn’t sure how much she can trust him and if his intentions are as true as hers.

King Toran is greatly admired for uniting the 5 realms and bringing peace to the land. When the King dies, his throne stands empty. It is rumored that he left 5 heirs throughout the land, however their identities remain a mystery.

The story is told from several character's point of view. Reann is a 17 year old ward of the castle that is working as a servant until her guardianship ends. She is the self-appointed librarian and has been secretly searching for clues to the lost heirs. She hopes that if she finds one she will gain a permanent position at the castle and not be cast out when she turns 18. A mysterious man arrives at the castle who is also secretly searching for the heirs, but can he be trusted?

Terith is a young dragon rider in a different part of the realm. He fights to protect his land from a horde of invaders called the Outlanders. Much of his story centers around the champion challenge. The winner is deemed the new ruler of the land and is also allowed first pick of the eligible maidens for marriage. The competition is fierce and he wants to win not only to rule, but to have first choice of the woman he loves.

The story starts off pretty slow and although there is some fighting and battles, they are more confusing than exciting. The worldbuilding is very slight and at times I didn't really understand everything that was going on. There is a horde of "Outlanders"that the realm must fight every year, but there is no information given as to who they are, where they come from, and why they keep invading year in and year out.

There are apparently 5 realms, but we only really read about 2 of them. The others are causally referred to when discussing the rumors of the location of the heirs. It is presumed that Toran is dead, but there is no real answer as to whether he is or not. There seem to be significant time jumps between some of the stories, but the reader is left to guess as to what these are. There is no information given as to why the castle is still running, who is in charge while there is no heir and how the realms continue to work together with no apparent government.

With regard to Terith, apparently the people that he lives with have some kind of magical power called the "awakening", but there is little description of what this is, what different kinds there are or where it comes from. There are several kinds of dragons but the descriptions of them raise more questions than provide answers.

Normally I devour fantasy books quickly, but it took me quite awhile to read this book. That's not a good thing. I do think the series has a lot of promise if the author can provide more worldbuilding in the next book. I will probably check out the next book in the series.

King Toran my have been dead for several years in the story he still revered throughout the realm and also a has big part in the story. The Fall of the Dragon Prince is an engaging YA fantasy and adventure story that will leave you begging for more. The characters are brave, heroic and constantly will keep you guessing on what is their part.

King Toran supposedly left 5 heirs. We already have 2 confirmed Princesses. While for Terith who is still making his mark in the world.

Characters: I like how the characters interact. The author made them semi-realistic as possible even in a fantasy settings. I am drawn to Lilleth and I think she is great for Terith. But Enala, ughh...I don't like her character much. Too clingy, too whore-ish for me. I thought my opinion of her may change once I finished the book but it didn't. Won't say the reason why, you have to read the book. She did something and Terith have to pay the price.

As for Reann, I like this girl. She is brave and has a noble heart. She is drawn to this Verick guy who is looking for the five heirs of King Toran. Let me tell you people, I sense something sinister to this guy since he killed a guy for a petty theft

Story: Story wise, it came out strong but gradually slows but not that slow. It has a constant pace. It's a good start for a trilogy. It made me want to read the next book to see what happens next. The changing of scenery and point of views was not as confusing as I thought.

Overall: It's a good start for the series and I applaud for the author on his first book. I seldom read books written by male authors (not being sexist but I noticed that I unconsciously read books written by female authors. Dan Brown and Christopher Paolini are the only ones I've read so far), but I like this book. Will look forward for the next since I am sucker for Dragons and Fantasy stuff.

Also I want to add this here. Fruit Dragons? Really??

Well that's my review for the ARC of the Fall of the Dragon Prince. I thoroughly enjoyed the book. So will wait for book 2. :)

The Fall of the Dragon Prince is beautifully written, with rich details, a complete and vast world, and compelling characters. I could not read it fast enough as both Reann, an orphaned servant, and Terith, a great dragon warrior with potential to be chief, discover the secrets of their pasts and how their destinies are interlocked with Toran, the legendary king who united the five kingdoms. The action and intrigue never let up, with an epic competition involving Terith and the other dragon-riding champions of Montazi, fighting to marry an eligible and for the title of chief, and the subtle, political maneuvering of Reann in Erdal as she attempts to piece together the mystery of the five lost heirs of Toran. This is the kind of book that leaves you desperate for more and not truly happy until the next book finally comes out.

Epic fantasy. Multiple storylines. Slow start, but caught fire fast. The leap from character to character was finely tuned. "Medieval" sea battles, dragon riders, magic, betrayal. The mystery of the heirs was foremost in the book. Great worldbuilding, protagonists wonderfully written. I voluntarily reviewed an ARC of this book from Netgalley.

THIS BOOK!!! Uhh, it took me forever to find the words to be able to write a review for it. It took me by surprise, and honestly, it's been years since I've read a book that has captivated me so much. I was hooked from the beginning of the book, and now that it's over, I don't know what to do with myself. I need the next book in this series!

Fall of the Dragon Prince is a wonderful fantasy with dragons. I have to admit, that was the main reason I picked up the book at first, because I love dragons! The story switches between a few different storylines, all within the same world, but making you fall in love with the stories, even if they never do intertwine.

At first we meet Toran, the King and the uniter of the Five Realms, as he rages through a huge war, ending in the birth of his son. Flash forward 26 years and then we meet Reann, a servant at the king's castle, but he's been dead for many years without an heir to the thrown. She's determined to find the missing heirs and get them to take the throne that has been siting empty for thirteen years.

Then we meet Terith, a dragon rider of the Montazi, and one of the best at that. He's preparing for a huge dragon race among many other champion riders, which will let him choose his wife among the eligible, along with the possibility of becoming the chief. But there is a darkened rider who threatens his survival in the race, along with that of the others. An invasion strikes them and the dragon riders battle what seems to be an impossible fight.

This book had me on the edge of my seat the entire time, going from one action-packed scene to another, throwing in the needed slow scenes to build up the tension again. I have to say, there were a few things I expected to happen, but then as things started changing, I was no longer sure what to think, making it hard to completely guess what was going to happen. After reading this book, it made me realize I haven't been completely rating books well by giving them 5 star reviews. In reality, this book makes up a 5 star rating, but I just wanna give it a 6 compared to those others. Stellar book and I cannot wait for the next one!!!

This is Allen's debut novel, and it is an excellent one. The world is easy to get into and the characters are well developed. There are multiple story arcs going on at the same time and they are well done and don't compete with each other. I loved it.

Brief Summary from Goodreads:

“Toran joined the five realms and tied their destinies to the survival of his secret heirs. But the king is now dead and his enemies gather.

Reann, a serving girl and self-appointed librarian of Toran’s estate, has a chance to unravel the greatest mystery in the realm.

On the other side of the kingdom, Terith and the other dragon riders fight to stop the invasion that would mean the fall of the empire. In this cross-country dragon race, Terith faces a black-hearted traitor with even darker purposes, to win the kingdom and the heart of the woman he loves. One rider will fall; one fate will rise.”

The novel alternates between the stories of Reann and Terith, but both stories have other important characters woven in. The diversity in characters is one of the things that drew me in the most and left me wanting to continue the trilogy.

Reann, a servant in the castle, is desperate to find one of the 5 secret heirs of Toran. She creative, sneaky, and cunning as she searches for clues to help her in her predicament. While she is young and makes mistakes, she is a character that's easy to like from the beginning.

Terith's story is completely different. A champion in a swamp-like realm where the warriors train and ride dragons, Terith hopes to earn his place as the future chief through marriage to one of the eligible daughters. Terith is a brave, honorable character from the start who puts the safety of his people ahead of all other things. He's a dream guy who sees plenty of action in the deadly swamp where he lives.

Together, the two stories are a perfect paring. Reann uses clues and secrecy to slowly uncover a mystery, while Terith faces tough challenges and saves his people. It's the best of both worlds rolled cohesively into one.

Rating

I loved this story and rate it a 4.5 out of 5. I would recommend it to anyone who enjoys a slow burn fantasy that's sure to turn into an epic series.

I received a free copy via Netgalley in exchange for a honest review.

I found some parts of this story extremely slow which then probably made the better parts feel actually better than they were.
The world building was poor, some of the character building was weak and in places the plot was totally unbelievable.
I can only hope the second in the series is better.

{I RECEIVED A COPY OF THIS BOOK FROM JOLLY FISH PUBLISHING IN EXCHANGE FOR AN HONEST REVIEW. THIS DOES NOT IMPACT THE CONTENT OF MY REVIEW AND MY OPINIONS ARE MY OWN.}

Do not judge this book by its cover! To be perfectly honest, I wasn’t expecting too much from this book when I first picked it up. But I pleasantly surprised!

The world-building is spectacular. Some areas, like Toran’s fortress, seemed familiar: castle, lords, ladies, servants, library, politics, etc.. Others, like the Montzai Realm, are extremely unique. There are mountains, the deep, bridges, cliff islands, tree pods, and more. It’s like a souped up elf village or something. I wish the map in the book took a closer look at some of the land; I would love to see the layout and intricacies of some of these places.

Some scenes lacked in explanation where I would have to double back to figure out what had just happened. But, for the most part, the detail, explanation, and description was evenly balanced, creating a perfect blend to keep my attention.

Another factor that led to my 2 day reading binge of Fall of the Dragon Prince was Allen’s use of anticipation. It wasn’t overt, like heart wrenching cliffhangers at the end of some books. His style was subtle, enough to keep me wondering and continuing to find out what happens next. The domino of events are all put in motion because of one man, Toran.

I gave this a 3.5. Overall I did enjoy the adventure but reading it was a mix of not being interested at all and being sucked in and flipping the pages. I think a lot of that is because of how slow it was at the beginning. Once you get about 3/4 of the way through and things start happening at a quicker page and the story is coming together it's really good. I will definitely continue on with the series.

This story does develop slowly but it's not just one story. It is two. You have the background story of the great Toran, who unified the realms. The first story is about Terith, who is a dragon rider. We follow him through his adventures and journey to become the chief of Montazi Realm, also what happens after the ride of a lifetime. The second story deals with a nosy servant, Reann and a mysterious stranger who comes to Toran's castle to find information only Reann has.

I give this book 3 stars because I felt like I got two half stories instead of a whole one. At the very first it was confusing trying to keep up with all the different characters and backgrounds and which realm I was in or if I was getting the background story about Toran. Towards the end, I fell more in love with Reann than Terith and wanted to know more of her story instead of Terith. I feel like it should have just been Reann's story. Then move on to the forgotten heirs. Let Terith's story be his own book.

King Toran was able to do the impossible and join the five realms. The destiny of each realm is tied to each of his hidden heirs. Now that the king is dead, his enemies are gathering to destroy any heirs. It’s now up to a self-appointed librarian to unravel the mystery.
I liked this book more than I thought I would. Everything was written in great detail. I loved being pulled into the story of Terith and the journey he went through. I look forward to reading the next book in this saga.
