CHRISTOPHER GOLDEN is the New York Times bestselling, Bram Stoker Award-winning author of such novels as Road of Bones, Ararat, Snowblind, Of Saints and Shadows, and Red Hands. I know I loved this, but skimming through to see if I want to keep it I have no idea how it kept my attention as a kid with the writing style (not that's bad, just fits with other fantasy) and how I managed to pick the second book in a series and never realized it til now.

Διανύω μια περίοδο όπου αποφάσισα, όσο μπορώ τουλάχιστον, να αφιερώσω χρόνο για να ολοκληρώσω τις μισοτελειωμένες σειρές βιβλίων που περιμένουν υπομονετικά στα ράφια της βιβλιοθήκης. Μια από αυτές τις σειρές είναι εκείνη του "Εξόριστου", η ιστορία ενός νεαρού αγοριού που έχει γεννηθεί από μάγους γονείς ωστόσο, ο ίδιος δεν μπορεί να κάνει την παραμικρή χρήση της και μάλιστα, έχει τη μοναδική ικανότητα να διαλύει όποια μαγεία τον προσεγγίζει αφού δεν μπορεί να τον αγγίξει, πόσο μάλλον να τον βλάψει. Και αυτό μπορεί να φαίνεται απόλυτα φυσιολογικό σε μας, να μην μας προκαλεί το παραμικρό άγχος ωστόσο, δεν συμβαίνει το ίδιο στον κόσμο από τον οποίο προσπαθούσε ο πατέρας του, μέχρι που πέθανε, να τον προστατέψει. Στον κόσμο αυτό ο Τίμοθι είναι ένα επικίνδυνο βδέλυγμα που σχεδόν όλοι τον αντιμετωπίζουν καχύποπτα και δεν είναι μάλιστα λίγοι εκείνοι που θα ήθελαν να τον δουν νεκρό.

Την τελευταία φορά που ασχοληθήκαμε με το θέμα, αφήσαμε τον Τίμοθι και την παρέα του να έχουν αποκαλύψει τα σατανικά σχέδια του Μέγα Μάγιστρου Νικόδημου ο οποίος και απήγαγε ισχυρούς μάγους προκειμένου να αιχμαλωτίσει τις ψυχές του αξιοποιώντας τες προς όφελός του, τόσο για να αποκτήσει ακόμα μεγαλύτερη δύναμη όσο και αιώνια ζωή. Φυσικά τα πράγματα δεν εξελίχθηκαν όπως ο ίδιος θα ήθελε αφού ο μικρός Τίμοθι φρόντισε με την βοήθεια των συντρόφων του να τον βγάλουν από τη μέση, αποκαλύπτοντας στον κόσμο των μάγων την προδοσία ενός εκ των ηγετών του, προκαλώντας νέες αναταραχές. Ο φίλος του πατέρα του και κηδεμόνας του, αναλαμβάνει καθήκοντα Μέγα Μάγιστρου στη θέση του νεκρού πλέον Νικόδημου όμως αυτό δεν είναι αρκετό για να παρέχει στον Τίμοθι προστασία και ασφάλεια. Το συμβούλιο των μάγων αποφασίζει να ορίσει έναν εκπρόσωπο, έναν αστυνομικό, στον οποίο θα δώσει μεγάλες δυνάμεις και εξουσία και ως γνωστόν,η εξουσία φέρνει ευθύνες αλλά, μπορεί να οδηγήσει και σε ακραίες συμπεριφορές απόλυτης εκμετάλλευσής της.

Η συνέχεια της ιστορίας παίζει σε δύο επίπεδα. Το ένα έχει να κάνει με την φιλία, την αφοσίωση και την προστασία της τιμής σου, κρατώντας τον λόγο σου και προσπαθώντας να είσαι όσο το δυνατόν πιο δίκαιος ακόμα κι όταν φαντάζουν εναντίον σου. Σε αυτό το άκρο βρίσκεται ο Τίμοθι ο οποίος κάνει ό,τι περνάει από το χέρι του προκειμένου προκειμένου να απελευθερώσει τον Δράκυλο φίλο του, Βέρλις, που στην προσπάθειά του να βρει τρόπο να σταματήσει τον εμφύλιο πόλεμο στη χώρα του τη Δρακονία, πιάστηκε αιχμάλωτος από τον Γκρίμσο, φέρνοντας εκ νέου στην επιφάνεια την ιστορία ενός άσβεστου μίσους που τελικά, ίσως κρύβει περισσότερα απ' όσα φαίνεται. Το άλλο έχει να κάνει με την ίδια την ανθρώπινη φύση μέσα στα πλαίσια μιας κοινωνίας η οποία είναι ανίκανη να αναλάβει το βάρος των ευθυνών της, που κρίνει το κάθε τι επιφανειακά και αρνείται να δεχτεί το διαφορετικό εξαιτίας του φόβου της άγνοιας αλλά και εξαιτίας της παραπληροφόρησης με την οποία γαλουχήθηκε προκειμένου να εξυπηρετήσει απώτερους σκοπούς που συνεχίζουν να απλώνουν τα σκοτεινά του δίχτυα μέχρι και το σήμερα.

Το να συνεργάζονται δύο άνθρωποι για την συγγραφή ενός βιβλίου, δεν είναι εύκολη υπόθεση. Όσο κι αν υπάρχει ταύτιση απόψεων, οι ιδέες δεν μπορεί να μην συγκρούονται ποτέ. Ωστόσο, αυτό που πραγματικά έχει σημασία, είναι να μπορείς να βρεις την αρμονία, συνδυάζοντας αποδοτικά αυτά που σκέφτεσαι εσύ, με αυτά που σκέφτεται ο άλλος. Οι Christopher Golden και Tom Sniegoski φαίνεται να το πετυχαίνουν αυτό σε μεγάλο βαθμό και μάλιστα, σε μεγαλύτερο βαθμό από το πρώτο βιβλίο της σειράς δίνοντάς σου την αίσθηση πως πλέον έχουν κατασταλάξει, ξέρουν προς τα που οδεύουν και το που θέλουν να οδηγήσουν την ιστορία τους αλλά και την εξέλιξη των χαρακτήρων τους των οποίων οι προσωπικότητες είναι ιδιαίτερα ισχυρές, εξαιρετικά συμπαθείς και όσο τα πράγματα δυσκολεύουν, ακόμα πιο ενδιαφέρουσες και πολύπλευρες. Τα ηθικά ζητήματα φαίνεται να αποτελούν βασική προτεραιότητα για τους συγγραφείς, χωρίς όμως να αφήνουν τη δράση να γίνει θύμα μιας ηθικολογικής, δήθεν κατά βάθος, προσπάθειας προσφέροντάς μας παράλληλα και epic στοιχεία που ένας κόσμος σαν αυτός του Τίμοθι, χρειάζεται οπωσδήποτε για να επιβιώσει.

Το δεύτερο βιβλίο της σειράς του "Εξόριστου" διαβάζεται εξαιρετικά εύκολα κι ευχάριστα, ταξιδεύοντάς μας ακόμα πιο βαθιά στον κόσμο των μάγων, επιτρέποντάς μας να ρίξουμε μια πιο αυστηρή και προσεκτική ματιά στο κοινωνικοπολιτικό κατεστημένο της χώρας, στους θρύλος, τους μύθους και την ιστορία του τόπου αυτού και των μελών που τον αποτελούσαν στο παρελθόν και εκείνων που τον αποτελούν σήμερα. Οι περιγραφές είναι παραστατικές και λεπτομερείς, αποδίδοντάς μας με ακρίβεια την εικόνα που θα θέλαμε να είχαμε για τον μαγικό αυτό κόσμο, συνδυάζοντάς τον με κατάλληλες δόσεις δράσης και περιπέτειας, που όχι μόνο εξυπηρετούν την υπάρχουσα τροπή της ιστορίας αλλά, της προσφέρουν τα φόντα που χρειάζεται προκειμένου στο μέλλον να εξελιχθεί σε μια περιπέτεια που θα έχει ακόμα περισσότερα πράγματα να δώσει. Μια ιστορία που κατά βάθος, παρά το γεγονός ότι διαδραματίζεται σε έναν μαγικό κόσμο, είναι ανθρωπιστική και αποδεικνύει περίτρανα ότι το ανθρώπινο πνεύμα και η νόηση, μπορούν να ξεπεράσουν ακόμα και τη δύναμη της μαγείας.

I liked this book. It took me awhile to get into it. After reading it, I actually found out it was number two in a series. It didn't seem to matter too much to my understanding of the story. I put the others on my to read list for next year. I read this book for the prompt involves dragons. (hpootp 2025)

Now that the mess with Nicodemus is over, Verlis had hoped to get on with his original mission. But Constable Grimshaw, Parliament's appointed investigator, has taken offense to the Wurm and imprisons him beneath the sea. Now Timothy must find a way to free Verlis and get to Draconae before civil war wipes out Verlis's clan, and before Constable Grimshaw finds some excuse to lock Timothy up too.

Nichodemus is gone, but the fear and distrust he fermented is just beginning to boil over. Verlis falls immediately to that prejudice, leaving Timothy alone to battle his way through Parliament's accusations, Constable Grimshaw's machinations, and a bevy of engineering challenges. Threads from the first book develop here: the origin of the mysterious girl Timothy saw on the tower, the mysterious voice behind Nicodemus, and the war between the mages and the Wurm. It's a series of battles against prejudice, and although Timothy's reasons are sound, he's unable to make much progress against centuries of fear and hate.

This book was a good continuation of the first, although it leaves much room for sequels. The focus on prejudice was played up heavily, and given the point of view, leaves Parliament all looking like emotional bulldogs that won't let go of their grudges. Although the main characters and the ambiguous characters get plenty of development, Parliament in particular is so flat it can get annoying: no one speaks except the four or five members already identified. Grimshaw's backstory is revealed in a very awkward scene where his mind apparently can't help getting drawn back into those memories; it would have been better if those sentences about being forced had been left out, or even if bits and pieces had come out along the way rather than in one chunk.

I'm fairly positive I've identified the origin of the voice at this point, so it will be interesting to see if my guess pans out in the sequels. Overall this was as solid as the first book, with a plethora of mechanics that keeps it from becoming traditional fantasy. I rate this book Recommended.

I am sort of 2.5 actually but I gave it the benefit. I love the plot, the plot and the world are very good. I like the message (anti-xenophobia) but the book was hard to read because it is quite poorly written and in parts that just makes it swampy going. The language use itself I mean. I also found the characters stereotypical and badly needing some critical whiteness and critical masculinity thought about privilege in how the main character relates (benevolently but without equality) toward other races and the way all female characters however powerful are reduced to someone's wife, sweetheart or love interest by little needless innuendos. I feel the authors meant to do better than they did in reference to race and gender but honestly see the world through the eyes of the triumphant white male. I particularly didn't take to Cassandra as a character which was unfortunate because she was the only female that was more than background (barely). It didn't help that every time she appeared the writing turned to her appearance more so than anything she did or said, that she had no thoughts that we the reader could be privy to but when other characters speculated (all major male characters got to share their thoughts with the reader at some stage) or read her body language it was always about her chemistry toward Timothy rather than her ambition, motivation or intelligence. I really do think the world, concept and fantastically shaped plot(with a much better than average ending for a middle of series book)all show potential but are let down by these flaws.

Book 2 in the Outcast series. Timothy is a great character and once again succeeds in doing the impossible within a magical world. But, somehow, I feel this book is just a long segway into the next story. The first book made sense as a stand-alone book. This book introduced new characters of Constable Grimshaw - who clearly is the bad guy but is under orders from a mysterious master. We formally meet Cassandra, but her character is still as secretive as in the first book. Then we also meet Raptus, the Wurm general bent on getting revenge on the mages. Its mainly an introduction of these new characters along with the Wurms coming back to their world. Granted, I liked the story overall and will read the next one just to find out what happens with Timothy.

Even though Timothy has no magical powers, he was able to defeat the evil Nicodemus with his power of peacemaking. Timothy then travels to a dimension where war is raging. He hears two different sides to the same story and has to decide which story he can trust. Add to that disappearing mages (a crime he is being accused of) and the granddaughter of Nicodemus trying to claim herself Grandmaster of the Order of Alhazred and you have quite the story.

This is a great intro to middle school series for 6th graders.

The story of Timothy, the unmagician, continues. Timoothy is trying to repay a debt to Verlis, the Wurm. However, the Mages thought they had destroyed the whole Wurm race over a century ago and they liked it that way. Constable Grimshaw ties to block Timoothy and it looks as if he may kill both Timothy and Verlis in order to achieve that.

Good young adult series with lots of action. Most of the characters have at least some depth and feel fairly realistic. The story flows well and is easy to follow, but is not childish or silly. The books do deal with war, and death, and (to a lesser extent) prejudice, so may not be suitable for younger kids.

The saga continues...

Just as good as the first volume in the Un-Magician series.

Written for the Young Reader market, but the story is so strong it is able to grab the attention of any age group.

I look forward to the 3rd volume.
