In a world in which everyone has magic, Timothy not only doesn’t have it; he negates it. That’s made him an expert at mechanical inventions, to the benefit of his land as they prepare for a war with the dragons and need to mine a metal sensitive to magic for weapons. An upcoming war is not the only thing going wrong, though. Timothy’s beloved mentor, Grandmaster Leander, is behaving oddly right when the need for him is critical. When he betrays Timothy’s trust, Timothy finds himself stranded in the midst of a wilderness, in desperate fear of what might befall those at home who still trust the Grandmaster. And that’s just the start of his adventures.
This is the third book in the series, and while it can somewhat stand alone, it’s not very strong on its own. I think there’s a lot of imagination here and a lot of thought put into the world-building, and there’s certainly adventure enough for those who want a high-action fantasy. However, the characters seem pretty one-dimensional, and it drives me crazy when writers keep explaining what the characters are feeling rather than showing it—it’s just laziness. I also felt the writing was kind of clunky overall—felt a bit like the writing of a student who’ll be really good in about fifteen years. I also am scratching my head over Timothy’s robot. Creating something like that would take major knowledge of how to create AI—i.e. knowledge of tech akin to computers—and that’s not what Timothy or his world has; he’s a mechanical engineer. Maybe it was explained in an earlier book, but I’m not buying it unless there’s magic involved. Also, how old is Timothy? I thought at the start that he was twelve, but that doesn’t make sense with the rest of the book. And does everyone have a familiar? Why does Timothy have one? What’s the purpose of familiars in this world? Why all the Roman names if this is not our world in another form? (Okay, the longer I write, the more questions I have—basically, this is no 'Seraphina').

Timothy is trying to assist in the excavation of metal needed to make armor to fight the invasion of Raptus, the war general of the Wurm faction that wants to destroy the Mages as the Mages thought they had destroyed the Wurms over a century ago. Timothy has a difficult time working on this project as something evil is killing mages and worse yet the evil has taken over Leander, the Grandmaster of the Mages. Leander almosts succeeds in killing Timothy.
The book is written for young adults and thus is a little simplistic but still it is a fun, fast read.

And this Series gets even better!
A Dragon War is about to occur. Can't wait to read the next volume (it's that good of a Story).
Did find a couple of spelling errors which should had been caught by any decent Editor paying attention while viewing and reading over the manuscript before being sent to press, but the tale in itself outshines any minor errors.

My brother Jacob recommended this series to me and I like it a lot. It is surprisingly adult in its themes and storyline but wonderfully creative as most young adult fiction is.

The series as a whole I give 3 stars. It could have been a lot better if it wasn't for the clunky writing and plot points that don't go anywhere. (For example, in book 2, Dragon Secrets, Grimshaw steals some journals belonging to Timothy's father. This seems like it's going to be of some importance later on, but it is never mentioned again and the heroes never learn of it.) It is also a bit repetitive, like how they keep explaining how Malleum works every time it is mentioned.
I thought Ghostfire started off pretty well and I thought Karthagia was a cool set piece. But the lake people and Lord Romulus feel like filler to make the book longer. (Why even have Lord Romulus believe Alhazred is alive? He doesn't do anything to help stop him.) And I was completely baffled by the motives of the villains. Alhazred wants to become one with magic. He is literally moments away from his goal, but instead of remaining hidden like he has for a 100 years, he starts drawing attention to himself by harassing the heroes. If Alhazred had done absolutely nothing and let the heroes remain distracted by the Wurms, he would have won.
And why did Alhazred want Timothy alive? What use could a man who wants to be one with magic have for a boy who can null magic? Why would he even want Tim anywhere near him, especially after Tim briefly removed Lord Romulus' magic in the previous book. And if he wants Tim alive, why have Leander throw him from the sky carriage where Tim could have easily died?
I get that Leander had started to discover Alhazred, but why bother possessing him? Possessed Leander doesn't do anything that helps Alhazred, instead, Possessed Leander's actions expose Alhazred. And why have Leander attack the Voice? Nothing about Leander's plot line made any sense to me, especially when Alhazred could have just killed him like he did with all the other missing mages. There is even a great opportunity to kill him at the mining site and make it look like a wild animal did it.
I also wish they had shown what would've happen if Alhazred became one with magic. Like maybe have nearby mages, like Cassandra, start turning into mindless drones. I think that would have been cool and would have really reinforced the idea that Timothy needed to unplug magic.

Συνεχίζοντας την ανάγνωση προς ολοκλήρωση της σειράς "Εξόριστος", έφτασα στο τρίτο και προτελευταίο βιβλίο της σειράς και αυτό που μπορώ να πω με βεβαιότητα είναι, ότι λίγο πριν η αυλαία πέσει οριστικά, τα πράγματα παίρνουν τέτοια τροπή που το ενδιαφέρον μας γύρω από τις εξελίξεις αυξάνεται κατά κόρον. Εξακολουθεί να μην είναι "Harry Potter" ωστόσο, θα ήταν μάλλον άδικο κάθε σε σειρά βιβλίων με μάγους, ή και με μη-μάγους όπως στην προκειμένη περίπτωση, να μπαίναμε στη διαδικασία να την συγκρίνουμε με ένα από τα μεγαλύτερα, πιο επιτυχημένα και μοσχοπουλημένα best-sellers όλων των εποχών, στο χώρο της φανταστικής λογοτεχνίας τουλάχιστον. Καθώς λοιπόν ο Τίμοθι έχει καταφέρει να φέρει προσωρινά την ειρήνη στον κόσμο των μάγων, με τους μάγους και τους κατατρεγμένους από το ίδιο το είδος τους, Δρακύλους, να έχουν συνάψει ανακωχή προκειμένου να είναι έτοιμη για την επίθεση των τελευταίων, έχει να αντιμετωπίσει νέες ανατροπές πριν τον πόλεμο που βρίσκεται προ των πυλών.
Ο Τίμοθι, παρέα με τον Βέρλιο, τον Λέανδρο και μια ομάδα μάγων, σπεύδουν στο μαγικό τείχος που χωρίζει την χώρα των μάγων από εκείνη των Δρακύλων, έπειτα από την εξορία των δεύτερων από τους πρώτους. Όμως, όπως ήδη γνωρίζαμε από το προηγούμενο βιβλίο της σειράς, οι Δράκυλοι είναι έτοιμοι να διεκδικήσουν όλα όσα οι μάγοι τους στέρησαν άδικα και πάνω απ' όλα, είναι αποφασισμένοι να φτάσουν στα άκρα, χωρίς να λογαριάζουν τις απώλειες ή το αίμα που θα χυθεί σε μια μάχη σαν κι αυτήν. Οι μάγοι γνωρίζουν ότι το να εμποδίσουν το φράγμα να σπάσει είναι μια μάλλον χαμένη υπόθεση και έτσι αποφασίζουν να προετοιμαστούν όσο καλύτερα μπορούν για την αναμέτρηση, έτσι ώστε να έχουν όσο το δυνατόν μεγαλύτερο πλεονέκτημα απέναντι στους επιτιθέμενους, μειώνοντας τις απώλειές τους, με την βοήθεια ενός μεταλλεύματος που βρίσκεται προς εξόρυξη στα όρια των τειχών, που δονούνται από την οργή όσων βρίσκονται από πίσω, το οποίο και θα χρησιμοποιήσουν προκειμένου να φτιάξουν δυνατά και αδιαπέραστα όπλα.
Όλα τα παραπάνω είναι απλά ένα μέρος της ιστορίας και σίγουρα, δεν είναι το πιο σημαντικό. Το πιο σημαντικό είναι το γεγονός ότι ο Λέανδρος φαντάζει παράξενος, με μια συμπεριφορά η οποία δεν τον χαρακτήριζε στο παρελθόν, κάνοντας τους φίλους του να ανησυχούν για το τι μπορεί να του συμβαίνει. Η ανησυχία αυτή αυξάνεται όταν ο Λέανδρος αποπειράται να σκοτώσει τον Τίμοθι, αλλά και τον οδηγό του Καϊάφα. Η ανεπιτυχής όμως αυτή προσπάθεια συμβάλλει στο να ανακαλύψει ο Τίμοθι κάποιες τρομακτικές αλήθειες για τον κόσμο των μάγων, για τις ψυχές εκείνων που έχουν πεθάνει και για το πως η δύναμή τους αξιοποιείται προς όφελος θεωρητικά της μαγείας ωστόσο, καταδικάζοντάς τες να μην βρουν ποτέ την ηρεμία που αξίζει κάθε ψυχή που με τον θάνατο αποχωρίζεται τον σώμα της σε ένα ταξίδι χωρίς επιστροφή. Παράλληλα όμως συνειδητοποιεί πόσο χρήσιμες μπορούν να φανούν οι δικές του γνώσεις και ικανότητες, που μπορεί να μην είναι μαγικές αλλά είναι σπουδαίες αλλά, και πως το κακό που νόμιζαν πως είχε εξοντωθεί είναι εδώ, πιο δυνατό και διψασμένο για εξουσία από ποτέ.
Ένα από τα θετικά στοιχεία του βιβλίου είναι ότι οι εξελίξεις δεν περιορίζονται αποκλειστικά μέσα σε κάποιο κάστρο ή στην βάση της κοινωνίας των μάγων. Παράλληλα μας επιτρέπεται να παρακολουθούμε τις εξελίξεις σε διαφορετικούς χώρους, σε παράλληλους χρόνους. Έτσι η δράση δέχεται μια ισχυρή βοήθεια και αποφεύγεται η μονοτονία, τόσο ως προς το περιβάλλον δράσης ως και προς του εμπλεκόμενους σε αυτή χαρακτήρες. Γνωρίζουμε διαφορετικές συνομοταξίες μάγων, ήθη και έθιμα και μας επιτρέπεται με τον τρόπο αυτό να έχουμε μια πιο σφαιρική εικόνα του κόσμου αυτού αλλά και του τρόπου που τα πράγματα λειτουργούν μέσα σε αυτόν. Τα πράγματα δεν είναι άσπρα ή μαύρα αλλά πάντα, υπάρχει και μια ενδιάμεση κατάσταση και πρέπει να είμαστε ανοιχτοί στο να δεχτούμε πληροφορίες και να τις επεξεργαστούμε σωστά γιατί το να εθελοτυφλούμε ή το να μην βλέπουμε καθαρά μπορεί αν οδηγήσει σε αποτελέσματα με απρόβλεπτες συνέπειες.
Όπως και τα προηγούμενα βιβλία της σειράς, έτσι και αυτό, διαβάζεται εύκολα κι ευχάριστα. Μάλιστα, οι ανατροπές είναι τόσες πολλές και με τόσο σταθερό ρυθμό που δεν μας αφήνουν λεπτό να πλήξουμε, αυξάνοντας τις ήδη υπάρχουσες αντιξοότητες, κάνοντας τις καταστάσεις ακόμα πιο δύσκολες αλλά και επικίνδυνες. Ο θάνατος παραμονεύει στην ατμόσφαιρα και οι ήρωές μας θα πρέπει να ρισκάρουν αλλά και να πάρουν αποφάσεις που θα τους φέρουν πρόσωπο με πρόσωπο με κινδύνους και εχθρούς που μπορεί καν να μην τους είχαν περάσει από το μυαλό, ως κάτι αδύνατον και χαμένο στο χρόνο. Σίγουρα το ενδιαφέρον μου έχει αυξηθεί και περιμένω εναγωνίως να διαβάσω το τελευταίο βιβλίο της σειράς όπου ο πόλεμος είναι μονόδρομος και το μόνο που μένει είναι να ανακαλύψω ποιος και με ποιον τρόπο θα αναδειχτεί νικητής και κατά πόσο ο Τίμοθι, το αδύναμο πιόνι του μαγικού κόσμου μπορεί να τον αλλάξει για πάντα.

I picked this up in a book clearance for 49p from WH Smiths. The last time I bought a book for less than 50p in Smiths was when I was collecting Jennings in the late 70s! Sadly, I Did not realise this was book 3 of a series when I bought it, and that did not help my enjoyment of the story. The story was a little formulaic and not greatly enthralling. The idea of the protagonist being an "unmagician" - special for his lack of magical powers had undertones of O S Card's "Harts Hope", but this was a very different story to that one.
If I had started this series at book one I would have enjoyed this one more. But I also doubt I woud have persisted with the series. The intended audience may feel differently about it - but as it was in a book clearance - maybe not.
If I had started this series at book one I would have enjoyed this one more. But I also doubt I woud have persisted with the series. The intended audience may feel differently about it - but as it was in a book clearance - maybe not.

This whole book seemed pretty much a sidequest for the whole series. After reading the fourth one, I understand how it ties in, but there seem to be two it three main bad guys in this book . In this book, while the mages are mining for Malleum, a new traitor seems to be among their midst, but could it be Leander, who is acting strangely lately? This one wasn't really as action packed as the others in the series, mostly because of the problem above, but it is still worthy of a 3-star review.
