Five stars for the new concepts melded in with the usual sci-fi/alt dystopian futures. So much in this to chew the fat over and ponder. For once I've not raced through a book but slowed my paced down to let things mull over and spark my synapses - it's not that often that I find a story that doesn't follow formula story ideas, though I enjoy a lot of the conventional horror & science fiction it's great to see an author melding genre plots. Some thoughtful quotes that I've highlighted throughout & hopefully will find time to enter them in here soon. Having said all that in places it needed serious editing (not typos etc) but structure was a bit random i.e. in memory flashbacks - some a bit too long, some took pages before I came to the connection to the present. But otherwise I really loved this one.
I was selected to read this in exchange for a review.. This was a very enjoyable read!!! A fast paced thriller where conspiracy theory becomes conspiracy fact!!! This read had elements of science fiction in a dystopian setting.. It somehow reminded me of Judge Dredd and The Matrix...
My Review: Let me start by saying I do not read a lot of sci-fi, so I did not know how I would feel about this book.
Let me tell you also this book blew me away. I was surprised with how fast I was pulled into the dystopian world that the author created because of the vivid descriptions of the writing and it was hard to be pulled back to reality. Great character development propels this story along with a wonderful writing style. This book is a gripping page-turner that is just the beginning to a series. I could not believe this was a debut novel. The story flowed so well and was so compelling I would have thought it was after years of writing. This book is a winner even if your not a sci-fi fan it will convert you. It has converted me.
Mr. Evans I hope your writing a sequels because I want MORE
I started reading this book back in December of 2015 and it took me nearly a year to get this book read. The formating of the book (from present to past to present) really threw me off. I would start getting into the whole "present" story and then get thrown into the past. When I was enjoying the past story, it would go back to the present. It could work for some but for me, it was just distracting.
The story is a good tale for post-apocalyptic genre and for body-enhancing. Of course, the body-enhancing is not due to human changes but through other methods. These methods, I won't tell because that's part of the uniqueness of the story you need to read about, helps the main character and a few like him (in the past) to become almost super-weapons or super-spies. They can work harder, run faster, hear/see better, and all that kind of jazz. When they go to investigate an incident in Europe where one of the talents has gone silent, the main character goes through a gun fight, steals a car, and just does some pretty nifty Bond-type moves. The lost talent is found and revived, but where does the madness end?
In the present, the world has been demolished by war and maybe a higher echelon society, but I'm not sure about that. There are mutants and drones and other things that itch to attack/destroy/eat. The main character, having survived his own past, now is the leader of a group trying to retrieve technology for the purpose of supporting their group. The further down they go into an abandoned underground city, the more his flashbacks come to call on him.
What happened in the past? Where is the group going to go (in the present and towards the future)? No clue. You'd probably have to read the next part of the series to get some final answers.
Aside the whole past-to-present-to-past thing, I had an issue with the grammar. There were times that I found incongruities with the grammar (location of punctuation). Not a major thing but it also distracted me. The change of spelling from one chapter to another was another thing that deterred me from thoroughly enjoying the tale. It wasn't a spelling thing about the characters names but minor words that came up every so often.
3.5/5 - Recommended as a library borrow. This is a good book to read, but there are distractions too (especially the "when are we" question). The story ends on a good cliffhanger but doesn't give any conclusion about the conflict that the past or present was/is having. The imagination of the author is awesome and the story well detailed, when it wants to be. I would like to read more about the main character and potentially the next book in the series.
Some stories lead along the garden path. Born Lucid by Christopher C. Evans takes you by the neck and throttles you into pleasurable submission. A great read, really! Peopled by Relics and humans, the former employing cyborg technology that serves an Authority in a bleak dystopian future, but that’s not all. The story contains so many subplots and connects and explores so many of the conspiracy theories of the 20th century that it is a remarkable research achievement. What is amazing is that the conspiracy theory subplots are done deftly without the usual baggage and polemic that usually accompanies. Get this: Hitler in Argentina after the war because of info found under Hitler’s Berlin bunker. This stuff gets threaded into the story as an aside conversation between Relics using their ‘siphoning’ skills. On the slightly negative side, the story slows down a bit in the middle with interminable battle scenes between cyborgs and the leader of a mafia Triad in Hong Kong but just when I was starting to give up a new twist surfaces. The Cyborgs, Relics, long for freedom from an oppressive Central Authority and the second half of the book expands on that development while tying together all of the loose ends of first part. I can’t imagine what the second book of the series will contain, but then I don’t have to because I’ve already bought it.
Incredible writing style and flawless plot development makes this book my favourite read of 2015. I was first drawn in by the stunning art of the front cover, then compelled by the description here on Amazon, sure enough, I was hooked into the story half way through the first chapter. I am rarely so impressed by the opening of a book that I spend the rest of my day reading it, but this clever, gritty and thrilling Sci-Fi set in a conspiracy filled present AND chaotic dystopian future doesn't disappoint on any page. I love the author's twist on the traditional protagonist, here we have an altogether quite regular mind, in control of his body, but living almost harmoniously with a mysterious and ancient "relic" implant that expands his perception of the world, it's energies, and hazards, allowing him to overcome almost all obstacles and combat on an indestructible auto-pilot, though he remains receptive to all his doings. The adventure through this story is original and compelling, with well developed characters, gritty descriptive writing, action, thrills, suspense, and villains you will love to hate. Filled to the brim with sci-fi quirks that are both original and exciting, I recommend this to any who enjoys good fiction, good writing, and/or a good book. 5 star brilliance!
Born Lucid is a dystopian book full of conspiracy and intrigue. In the author's own words, most of the information in his book are believed to be fact by a lot of people. Though I don't agree with some of these so called "facts", such as ancient aliens, it sure makes for good fiction! The book is chalked full of information and detail. Sometimes it seems to move a little slow because of that, but don't skip or skim, you'll lose the gist of what is going on in the story line as it takes you from past to presents, back and forth. Some of the secondary characters need to be fleshed out a bit, and maybe that is coming with book two. The main character is well written and the scientific information makes it all plausible. The ending... just ended. Not any real closure, nor a cliff hanger. I am definitely reading the rest of the series, whenever it is finished. I give it four stars. I really liked it. There were very few swear words, no sexual content, but disturbing images, including some cannibalism (though thankfully not in the detail as some other things). I can recommend for ages 16 and up. If you love conspiracy theories, you'll love it.
Born Lucid: Book 1 of the Born Lucid Series by Christopher C. Evans
This book had an Indiana Jones flavor leavened with some John Ringo type of violence. Ancient alien technology clashes with corrupt capitalism and a potential invasion for the plot of the book.
Lucidus, formerly known as Chris, is a Greenpeace type of advocate who while working on an expose' becomes exposed to an invasive alien technology. This tech changes his life and automatically enrolls him in the ranks of enhanced enforcers of a shadowy, greed ridden world wide conspiracy.
Evans jumps back and forth from a current guerrilla style of life to the development of the warrior who becomes Lucidus. Evans postulates all manner of evil to be laid at the feet of egomaniacs who dominated the world through power and money. It is a thought provoking book.
I recommend it.
I'm always shocked when I find an author without a website, particularly a scifi author, however I could not find one for Christopher C. Evans
Interesting story! Really liked the world the author created. Well written story. When it came to the story I really liked the present or future part of the story better. The flashbacks or parts when Chris is relieving the past were packed full of details and information and to me they were too much, it was like an overload of details.I do believe the "flashbacks" or the past was necessary for the story to be built and for the reader to understand more about Chris (the main character) and how he got his implant and also his work with the Agency. I would have really liked for the glossary to be at the beginning of the story since it would have been very useful to know a lot of the terms ahead of the story. Also some names were hard to keep track of since they all had 2 names, the relic name and their name, I lost track a few times and had to go back. A lot of information in this part of the story but all and all a good book.
“Born Lucid” is a very well-written book filled with equal parts action and mystery. Christopher Evans has a highly readable and distinct writing style that makes this book really stand out among the rest. I was hooked in by the impressive blurb and since it was only a dollar, I decided to give this book a shot. This novel is well-plotted and well-edited, making it an impressive debut I’d recommend to anyone. I’ve been really into dystopian novels lately and started reading a lot of them after watching ‘Mad Max’ in theaters. You will lose yourself in “Born Lucid” and get so wrapped up in it the real world around you will just fade away. This novel is gripping and an absolute page turner that impressed me from page one. Two-thumbs up for Evans! Woohoo! 4.6/5 stars.
Chris Trent is on an archaeology/journalism mission to uncover and expose a possible alien, archaeological site. What happens is he's taken by first an alien artifact and then a secret organization that now controls his life. But sometime in his future he manages to escape what we come to know as the Agency. Lot's of, what some might call conspiracy theories - others call history or government cover-up.
I enjoyed the book, it was fast-paced with good balance between action, science and well-done storytelling. The ending was a bit abrupt but this is a debut novel and that was the only thing that really bothered me. Looking forward to the next book. In the meantime I'm going to have to brush up on some of the history and science mentioned in this book.
After finishing this book, my first thought was that wow this guy has raw talent. His writing style reminded me of a young James Patterson orJeffrey Archer but with a Sci-fi twist. The book is thoroughly engaging from start to finish. Very few sci-fi/dystopian mystery books can successfully weave in the thriller/suspense aspect, but Mr. Evans does this with the ease of a master. The mood is set for each scene; there’s tons of imagery so you can immediately picture the sights and sounds of the locales. It’s fast paced but not so much that you lose the underlying theme of the story, and the main character is uber mysterious but highly relatable. And he gets things done. All in all a fantastic book with a surprising ending . Cant wait for the next one in the series. Kudos.
Book 1 of the Born Lucid Series exceeded my expectations. Chris Evans has weaved a fiction story into nonfiction history which had me racing to Wikipedia for more information.
As an avid lover of science fiction and video games like Mass Effect and Halo I was pleasantly surprised at how often I compared the two universes to this one.
Not only was I thoroughly entertained I am now heavily invested in what happens next. As a reader you become connected to the characters and the larger story being told. What the novel's protagonist is experiencing is no different than from what we all experience as we learn more about the inner workings of our society and, honestly, world.
Very rarely does a novel grab my attention as this one did. I can not recommend it enough.
Chris Trent, an archaeology student and activist is about to have his world changed forever. After the discovery of a “relic”, that has actually taken over his body, Chris is plunged into a world that confirms quite a few conspiracy theories for reality. The story is well written and kept me engaged the entire time. As the first book in the series Born Lucid is a definite keeper! You know you are reading a good book when you are still thinking about the possibilities and probabilities of what you read for the next few days. Good Job on a first novel!
'Born Lucid' combines the brilliant concepts of 'The Matrix' and 'Bourne Identity' and then adds a lot more, unique story concepts to this fast-paced action-packed SCI-FI thriller. The book is well-written with lots of guns and killings. The flow of the story and the plot is unpredictable and complicated - I don't like predictable books - and I love the 'master conspiracy theory' that was found. I look forward to reading the next book.
I downloaded this amazing book using Kindle Unlimited.
I started reading Born Lucid purely by chance, having found it on Twitter, but it’s a decision I do not regret. I loved the amount of attention given to detail in this fast-paced thriller. Being relatively new to sci-fi novels myself, I found this page-turner an absolute delight to read. The characters were relatable and the author did not bother to confuse novice readers with unnecessary high-level scientific jargon. Looking forward to Part 2!
This book was given me by Rebecca Hamilton in exchange for a fair and honest review . As a debut book I found this was an excellent start to a writing career. Although Dystopian books are not my normal genre I found this one was well written with good pace and plenty of suspense. There is good character development bringing a reality to the story. A thoroughly enjoyable read which j can recommend to readers of all genres.
I enjoyed Born Lucid, Loved Lucidus character and enjoyed his flashbacks when he was at the academy. it's a well written story with interesting alien technology , it has a good balance between action , scince fiction and history . Can't wait to read book two to know what happened next because this one ended suddenly . Thank you Christopher for the free copy of the book , loved it
