The flashing neon lights of Reno harbor a ghastly past. With its wide-open gambling, divorce laws and around-the-clock casinos and bars, the Biggest Little City in the World was a rough and wild town with a turbulent history. Victims of Priscilla Ford’s Thanksgiving Day massacre haunt a downtown street. After a disappearance and death shrouded in mystery, the spirit of Roy Frisch still lingers near the location of George Wingfield’s home. Lynched by a mob for a death that never happened, the angry ghost of Luis Ortiz still walks the bridge at night. The queen of haunted Nevada, Janice Oberding, unearths the goulish history that put the “sin” in Nevada’s original Sin City.
I liked this, but I think it could've been a bit more in-depth. I know of more places or areas in Reno that are supposedly haunted that weren't mentioned, or stories related to places or people that were kind of glossed over (like the Reindeer Lodge or Levi Strauss's connection to Northern Nevada). However, this was still a fun, quick read.
I LOVED every single story in this great book about the ghosts of Reno. I grew up here and still live in the area. I knew almost all of the Haunted Spots...but the Author told the tales in a very real and authentic way, mixing in historical fact along the way.
I learned a lot of Reno history reading this, beyond just the spirits. Many familiar names. Known as the Biggest Little City, that title still holds true. Easy read, quite interesting.
This is a good book if you are interested in learning Reno history. I've lived in Reno for almost 20 years, and some of the stories are new to me. I can't rate it higher because, as ghost books go, it is weak. Proportionately few anecdotes and lots of speculation. Too many of the stories end with "some people say..." With the author's experience with local history and interest in ghosts, I expected more from the book.
Only took me like 2 days to breeze through this cause there's really not that much going on in it, though there is some good local history. It's hard to give this a fair rating as it's all speculation and anyone can just say they heard a noise or saw some shadow fly by. It's not a bad book, just doesn't really go into much detail and not really what I was hoping for. I was at the Reno Historical Society the other day and got to hear some real good stories.
