My name is Ruby Carter. I was a normal teenage girl who only wanted what every other teenage girl wanted- love and acceptance. But when my parents revealed a painful secret I couldn’t accept, and my boyfriend broke up with me the night before my eighteenth birthday, I turned into something beyond average. Betrayed and broken, I tore off in my car, into the storm, and straight toward my death. I was sucked into a dark and terrifying world I never knew existed, changing my life forever. That’s when I met him…
My name is Guy Stone. I’ve been told I have no heart- a cold, ruthless killer. And I liked the perception others gave me for it allowed me to shut out my past and focus on hunting down every last Unfortunate Soul, seeking my revenge. But the night I found her lying amongst the flames of the battle, helpless and confused, I caved, finding myself drawn to her dark innocence, unable to follow the rules. And by that one decision, not only did my life change forever, but I found myself falling for the one thing I despised the most: A vampire. My enemy. An Unfortunate Soul.
Jade M. Phillips, aside from being an author, can play guitar, do a frighteningly accurate portrayal of a spider monkey, and has the unique ability to vanquish entire armies of magical creatures with a flick of her pen. When she is not writing about daring journeys and lovable characters, she’s having nightly dance parties with her kids, blogging about whatever tickles her fancy at the moment, and testing new recipes on the stove (which coincidentally, usually ends up testing her smoke detectors as well.) Jade M. Phillips resides in Arizona with her husband, two children, and her crazy cat, William Wallace Braveheart Fuzzy McFarland the Third.
This book starts with Ruby's worse day, she just finds out her dad isn't her biological father. And to top it off her boyfriend and best friend brakes up with her. Totally devastated and upset she drives her car and crushes in a storm. The crash is meant to be fatal. But Ruby wakes up, convinced she just died. Instead she wakes up turning into a vampire. By her side is a man, Guy. Guy is a Fuse soldier who hunts vampires and the likes. But Ruby isn't fully turned yet, and he just can't bring himself to kill her. Instead he runs off with her so his fellow soldiers can't kill her. Also he really can't imagine why, he wants to protect Ruby.
Two people who should be complete enemies find themselves drawn to each other. Saving each other. Ruby's world is turned completely upside down, she can't go back home now, she can not stay with Guy, where can she go? What will happen to her now?
Soon they discover she isn't your normal vampire, once she is fully turned she doesn't turn into a killing monster, quite the opposite. She doesn't feel the need to kill humans or drink their blood. Slowly they discover more and more about Ruby.
Guy wants to drop her off to safety before he can return to his post as captain in the FUSE. On their way the encounter many adventures and fights.
But why is Ruby so different? Who has turned her into a vampire? And will Guy and Ruby be able to part?
There is so many different books about vampires, all with their own twists. And this one doesn't disappoint, adding something new to vampirerism once again. I really enjoyed the characters in this, a compassionate vampire, Ruby is just totally adorable. And Guy is very mysterious and dreamy.
It may not be a earth shattering book that will haunt me forever but I totally enjoyed the book. I am a sucker for anything paranormal and I just eat this stuff up. It had a fab surprising ending that leaves you wanting more. I for one can't wait to read the next book in this series, Broken Souls.
"What have you done?" A long moment of silence passed before he answered. "I rescued you."
This book had a brilliant concept and story line but the story telling was sort of underdeveloped, it lacked a consistent style, the characters changed in nature or feelings rather abruptly in turn left me in confusion. This is the story of Ruby/Faith and Guy Stone/Captain Stone and their journey towards finding a home for Ruby, a place where she can belong.
During the initial part of the story it was full with repetitive actions so much that it became boring. Though it was described differently each time, it was unbearable to read the same thing through out the first almost 30 percent of the book.
My nerves sent sharp messages through my body; messages indicating my bones were broken and muscles torn. But through the pain, an almost unbearable swarm of sensation bombarded me all at once.
At times when I read the book there was this sudden change in characters from cold to warm so sudden that it was ridiculous. There were also the some part that bare semblance to The Vampire Diaries, True Blood, Vampire Academy, Twilight and others put together in a very odd sense. On top of these the characters suddenly have knowledge and also understanding to things that just doesn't make much sense it only actually causes more and more irritation.
He no longer looked like the hard-as-nails Captain Stone, but a boy in love with a girl. A girl he was letting go.
Something like the sentence above how would a seventeen year-old know what a boy in love with a girl looked like. Since Ruby has only one relationship before and that to John who was in her own words a jerk and didn't treat her well. There was no mention of any other friend or girls she knew apart from her parents and John.
There were many instances in this book that were very good and had gave the story a very good twist but the characters, the story line and the writing style requires more depth and dimension so that it could be much more interesting and enjoyable to read. It was very underdeveloped and the ideas were like half baked and the story's transition was not good either maybe due to poor editing. If all these elements were put together rather carefully the story will flow seamlessly.
Ruby life ended and after that, she became a monster. She doesn't know how it happens. When she wakes up she finds herself among other people getting killed. Then there is Guy Stone who save her life. He's a killer who kills vampires, werewolf, and witches. Ruby was still human and after that Guy has been with Ruby through her change. After that Guy and Ruby are on the run not trying to get into with the FUSE aka Guy's also the captain of FUSE and needs to be back very soon. They both meet up with an old vampire Wilson, who is teaching Ruby to blend in with humans and is giving good complements for being a newbie and she going to a safe place to live with other unfortunate souls. Though its hard for Guy to let her go because he loved her and it brings him to his memories of the girl he loved taken away and gone. And Ruby finally knows her shadow which is very sad. Before taking their paths they kissed and finally parted their ways and something happens to both of them and leaves us hanging wanting for book 2 to see what happens.
I love this book it was non-stop day and night it was an Unforgettable moment with Ruby and Guy. They had each other back and saving each other. At last, they fell in love with each other and they couldn't let go cuz it was time to part of their ways I was crying that made me sad. And Ruby family who is Chris Shadow was that was the most part for me and for her I understand her feelings.
Ruby Carter was a normal seventeen year old girl, until the night that her world was turned upside-down. With her emotions on high, she drove in to an oncoming storm straight to her death. Someone, however, decided that her death should not be permanent. Guy Stone is a hard as nails Captain in the FUSE Army, whose sole purpose is to hunt down what they deem “unfortunate souls” and dispatch of them. Their worlds collide on, what will be, a whirlwind of a ride when Guy finds Ruby in the midst of her change at the site of their latest battle. He can’t bring himself to kill her, as he is supposed to, but what will the two of them do? This first book in the Unfortunate Souls series brings me back to the world of vampires for the first time in quite a while, and it turned out to be a pretty good trip back. This story was told from a two person narrative (Ruby and Guy) in the vain of Twilight, but has a very different story to tell. The author does a great job of fleshing out her characters and giving them their own voice. I felt that this book laid a very solid foundation for the series, and am very happy to have been asked to review it. If you are a fan of stories in the YA PNR genre, I feel that you will enjoy this book.
An exciting new series. It's not your typical vampire story. The author approaches the genre from a different angle while still including some of the elements vamp fans enjoy from other popular series'. The story grabbed me from the first chapter, kept me turning pages and left me eagerly anticipating the second book.
Cover/Title: The cover on this book is beautiful. The title doesn't tell the reader much ahead of time but does fit once you read the book.
Characters:Ruby is an interesting person. Not your typical vampire for sure. I like that Guy is very open-minded.
Plot: Ruby's whole world is crashing in around her. Understandably upset, she drives off in a storm and crashes. She wakes up and finds herself confused and changing. This is where Guy steps in and they need to think about the future.
Overall: An interesting vampire tale. It is definitely an interesting start to the series and I am looking forward to reading more.
I loved everything about this book! The ending left me needing the second one. I would reccomend this to everyone with a love for vampire books like I do. I LOVE GUY STONE !!!!!!!
There is so much this book could have gone into! It has a great story line. Love the hunter falling for the huntee angle. Vampire novels have gotten stale and this story gives me hope that not all is lost in the way of these types of books.
A clean good read for both YA and young at heart. It was bit confusing at first but it revealed the answers as the book progressed. The ending was the clencher. Can't wait for book 2.
Out of the 100s of vampire books I have read, this is by FAR at the top of this list. Between giggles and adoration I found myself in tears. Phenomenal work and I so excited and anxious for more!!
Any one who disagrees with me can go suck it this was the best book ever there was a lot of adventure, love and, heartbreak I loved it I didn't mean to but I skipped to the end like five times because in was at loss of words. Honestly this was a great book.
Cliffhanger endings annoy me, but that's not why I gave this 2 stars. The writing was inconsistent, the characters were not believable, and the story lacked any real meat. I'm honestly not sure why I even read to the end. Disappointing.
