I received a free copy of Destruction from the author in exchange for an honest review.

I'm afraid this book just isn't for me. I love the fantasy genre but I've come to the conclusion that this type of fantasy isn't my favorite style. There was nothing particularly wrong with the book (hence my undecided rating), it just didn't mesh with me.

The writing style didn't work for me as it seemed to with some other people - I found the diary format to create a distance between myself and the main character, as her summary of events (after they unfolded) didn't immerse me in a scene the way I would have liked. I couldn't tell what she or the other characters were feeling, and the lack of emotional interaction between the characters simply made it hard for me to invest in the story, which is the reason this style of fantasy isn't my favorite. First and foremost in a story, I like to feel a connection with the characters and feel a connection between the characters. Otherwise, a complex plot and all the action in the world couldn't hope to do anything for me. I struggle to find enjoyment in action-and plot-based stories when I feel like I don't know the characters.

For these reasons, I will not be reading the next book.

It's like a remix of Game of Throne and Lord of the Rings and I love every single bit of it ! The story is about Helisah, a young elf girl starting her new school year in the kingdom of Callista like any college students. Until one day, her supposedly boyfriend Khal betrayed the land and helped out Thrakoth A Talurian lord to turn the city upside down and killing everyone. With the help of an assassin troup, Helisah will begin her journey to the road of revenge. I think this is the perfect book for any fantasy fan: it has magic, sword combat, funny lines, and amazing character's development. What I love the most about this book is Helisah and her twin brother relationship ( Aegras). The author succeeded to make us feel close to them. They were always united and no matter what happened, I knew that they will always have each other's back. The ending didn't disappoint either, a hint that there will be other stories to come and I cant wait for it to come out :)! Thank you to the author himself for sending the ARC of this book.

This was a very fast and entertaining read!

A story mixing, elves, dwarves, humans, and gunpowder is a mix I haven't read before. I have to say, that other than name I didn't notice a lot of difference between human, elf and dwarf. Though that didn't bother me, but it just felt right in this story.

I liked the main characters, though I personally am not the biggest fan of diary style books. But I got used to that pretty quickly and got sucked right into the story.

The one missing star is due to it feeling a bit like "Riding there - winning there. Then riding somewhere else and doing so again". It could have been a bit more epic in style and a bit more diverse in action. (And no, I didn't spoil it - there will be important characters dying too... It's not the "nothing bad can happen" kind of book. The two main characters were just a bit too perfect at fighting at times to be fully believable.)

Otherwise a really fluent story that kept me well entertained all the way through!

Happy release day to all!

This book is my own creation, so I am going to be a bit biased. With that said, you don't need to read the other series in this universe to understand this one, but you might get more out of it if you do.

I felt that the story is the summary of a greater one. The world, the complexity of the plot, and the diversity of characters could have made an excellent story. Yet it seemed to me to be lacking in emotions ; I couldn't really relate to the characters. Maybe the diary format made it this way, with brief and concise entries from the main character, Helisah. I couldn't manage to build a visual identity for any character or scenery, perhaps from the lack of description caused by a consistent journal format. Moreover we lack background knowledge and lore: why democracies ? where does the bad guy comes from? is it common knowlegde for the characters? how does their magic works? who's a thelepath and how? is it rare? what is the difference between humans and elves? are the different races equaly spread over the countries? (...)
Maybe I'll find some answers in the second book.

Nevertheless I will stay with the impression of a fairly good story that rushed too quickly toward its end.

(Let it be said that I received a free copy in exchange of an honest review. This is it.)

Destruction follows the story of Helisah Almai, taking the form of a diary (or journal) as she documents the events after her city is destroyed and civil war looms on the horizon.

I quite enjoyed reading this book; it certainly had its faults, which I will get to, but I felt th story was strong, generally believable, and really interesting. I received a copy of this book from the author, in exchange for an honest review. I finished it some time ago, but am now ready to write my review.

Due to the diary format the reader is mostly only seeing the ost action-packed sequences, this makes for a rapid pace that hurtles you through and just keeps coming. I like this style for this story; as the plot moves toward an almost military campaign, the diary entries keep the events simple, and keeps them moving. However, there is also a downside to this format, in that it keeps the reader at arm's length. We do no get many chances to connect with Helisah, and the moments we do get are brief. This prevents any true emotional impact during important events, most notably the attack and destruction of the city in the beginning, along with the murder of Helisah's parents.

Also in regards to the beginning of the story, I found that the introduction was just too short. We are barely introduced to the characters before tragedy strikes, so the full effect is lost on the reader. I felt no connection to Helisah's pain, grief or anger at the situation. I kept reading as I was curious to know what happens, but this could definitely be a problem for some readers.

Because of this lack of introduction I also found a couple of early scenes a little hard to believe. Since we are presented with Helisah as apparently an academic: she and her brother Aegras have moved to the city from home to attend college, I feel it is outrageous to think she would adapt and succeed at the training regimen set before her so quickly. In the space of about a week she does a 180 from scholar to soldier, with hardly any difficulty. A longer introduction used to set up the background of this character could have made this more believable. However, once past that, the book takes a huge turn for the better, and truly finds its stride.

For some more positive points, I truly liked the glimpses of Helisah's past experiences. They were effective for giving us little nuances of her character, and I certainly would have liked to see more of that. Also I enjoyed the development of Thrakoth as a villain. The reader progresses from only knowing his name in the beginning to slowing seeing part of his power in the end. There's a mystery there as well, in why he is after Helisah and Aegras specifically. A mystery I hope to see solved.

This book is a solid start to series that I plan to see through to the end. As a first instalment it has done its job well of getting me invested, and I look forward to seeing the development of the story and the characters. I think we tend to focus on the negative in a review, but I enjoyed this book despite the problems I had with it.

4 out of 5.

So this took longer for me to read through ... not because it was a struggle to read it, but I wanted to keep reading it while fighting my urge to sleep. This book, this story, is just beautiful. The narrative is just freaking beautiful to me--it's written in diary format, yet it painted such a world in what's considered (for me) a short fantasy read. Eric did a superb job with the diary format.

Helisah Almari is the voice of this story. Told through her eyes, it never faltered for me. I felt like I was there with her every step of the way. But, honestly, without spoiling it too much, her and her twin brother Aegras are telepathic; they escape the wrath of the first attack and fled with The Raiders--a group of assassins; the evil Telurian Lord Thrakoth is after her family and her friends with benefits (the one that fills her up with so much lust) led the first attack. Along with her brother, The Raiders and a group of citizens they travel through the known lands fighting against the Telurian armies and taking back towns/cities and what belongs to them.

Her entire demeanor through the entries was written so I never pitied her and I understood her thinking process throughout the first two years of war. I loved Helisah to death--her eyes through this war isn't pity, depressed or overly pure hatred, but with an attitude to fight back. That's what I enjoyed the most.

I wished I saw more of Aegras, but his presence in the book semi met my quota when I reached the end. The characters throughout Helisah's entries that were introduced came with brief introductions and few tidbits of background information, yet, you felt like you knew them. She wrote about them in her entries whenever she encountered them and her sense of telling her day in her entries made me feel like I was there in the present with her or reliving it as she wrote in her diary.

The fight is far from over, but where Eric ends the story gives you a since of peace until you pick up the next book.

I don't normally read sci-fi fantasy but I have made a promise to myself last year to work on reading some genres that I haven't read before or only read a few of. I will admit to really enjoying this book. It is written by the main character, Helisah. A strong female character. She and her brother Aegras are on a journey to save back their land after an invasion. At first I was a little confused on who was who and what place was what. There are tons of different names in this book and they threw me off a bit. Helisah is telling the story in a form of her dairy. She write about her journey of learning to protect herself and fight in battle. Then she is sent on her first mission to prove if she is ready for battle. Helisah also falls in love with a Captain during her travels. I found the book to be actually a pretty light read, I didn't feel that is took me into the story to deep but enough that I wanted to know how Helisah does and if they win their battle. I love also how the author the telepath into the story between the siblings.

I give this book a 3.5 out of 5 stars. I loved the strong female characters within the novel, there actually were a lot of females in the battle fields. The reason I can't give it a 4 was that I would have loved a bit more depth in character development at the start. Also the fact that I was totally lost on who was an elf, dwarf or human and which place was what. That could have just been me though as this is really one of the first novels in this genre for me. I would read book two to see what happens next with Helisah as I did find myself liking her character a lot. For a battle book I found this to be okay for preteens, there really wasn't any gruesome violent scenes.

The author sent me a copy of Destruction in exchange of an honest opinion so here I go :
I did enjoy this book but there was a few things that disturbed me...
First of all : the prologue. Prologues are quite to write so I understand that you know...
but this went to quickly, we barely even knew who was who, what was going on, that boom something major happened ! Her "boyfriend" betrayed the nation but this boyfriend she met him like two days before, we were told nothing about her feelings for him and then, we are told that he betrayed them but barely even mentions it, as if it was not really important and once again we don't know about her feelings, like she should be hating him, but she does't...
Then she and her brother are saved by "Assasins" (as if it was totally normal...) and they find out that their was (what a coincidence) a spy !
So the main character (Halisha I think..) starts a training to become a Raider (training that doesn't seem to tire her even though it looks quite physical..)
And then, we get into the proper book, which happens a year-ish after the prologue.
The story does get better even though the writing is not really the best..

But I think that, because the author asked to review this book, I was being more critical while reading it so even if the prologue was not great and that I would have liked to know more about the character's feelings (you know the rule of the "don't tell, show") this book was enjoyable and I will read the next ones.

I loved this book. The least I can say is that the action punches you in the face right at the beginning, coulnd’t ask for a better start!
This book is different from most of the fantasy I’ve read. Even if the background seems common for fantasy, there are some big differences as well. One of the things, for me at least, is that the accent is put on the character not on the race of the character (no cliché). By this I mean, once the character is introduced, you forgot about the race. You just follow him or her, discovering why they fight and how, their pain and their journey.
I have to admit that sometimes, I felt as if the way the story is presented stop us from knowing more from this world but that’s the problem with this type of narrative. And I would have liked to know a little bit more from the other characters orbiting around the main ones. Finally, a little bit of the last part felt rush to me and some details were missing. It left me wanting for more and scratching my head. So, I suppose that, what I would like now is having a complete story of those event… Not just the diary.
But I loved it. Couldn’t put it away to be honest. it’s not one of those long, epic stories, but I’m not always in the mood to read a Tolkien or an Erikson. Sometimes I need something short. This book was sharp, punchy, light and funny.

The United Kingdom of Callista prepares to celebrate their independence. But the celebrations are marred and exhilaration turns into anguish when the land is attacked by Telurian Lord Trakoth. Like other citizens, elf girl Helisah and her twin brother Aegras face the challenges of an apocalyptic war.

Destruction is a sci-fi fantasy that goes beyond its genre. It has most of the qualities that make sci-fi likeable but it has elements that might appeal even to people who are not very interested in fantasy. The plot is gripping and the language maintains the tension in the ambience of the novel. The depiction of battle in the story is quite vivid and magic unfolds just in the right moments. I found this book to be a perfect package. I admired Helisah throughout the narrative and she comes through as an ideal protagonist. However, I was a little confused after encountering certain situations in the book where the details are not very identifiable. But this might have been so for me because I’m not much of a fantasy fan. As someone who doesn’t often choose titles from the fantasy genre, I was impressed by this book. So, I’m guessing fantasy fanatics would love everything about it! I would definitely recommend this to the people who are always looking for a blend of magic, sci-fi and a tinge of romance!

I really liked this book. However at the beginning I was confused about what was happening. This book is set in a fantasy world not so different from our own (Apart from the elves, dwarfs and magic). The story begins when Helishah and her brother Aegras meet the King and Queen of Callista. They are telepathic. Later on in their stay at the palace they are invaded by the Telurians and Helishah is betrayed by a man she thought she loved. Everyone in the palace was butchered even the King, Queen and their parents. The siblings are rescued by the raiders (A group of rebels). They soon learn heir late parents weren't who they thought they were and they are trained in combat to fight and spy against the telurrians. They are very brave as they aren't very old. Later on the book does get confusing especially with all the names of places. The story is about fighting for what you believe in no matter what the cost and the moral repercussions of you actions. It is also about the dangers of weapons of mass destruction and war. I am 15 but I think the book is aimed at people older than me. However the book is gripping and a good read.

Intriguing introduction to this world inhabited by elves, dwarves and humans. A world on the brink of war.

It unfolds via journal entries by one of the main characters, Helisah Almari. Not a preferred style, but in this instance it worked rather well.

Interesting world building; magic, telepathy and a medieval feel to the people and their villages and city. The resistance movement, including The Raiders, attempt to thwart the megalomaniac Lord Thrakoth were a fascinating group to follow, and in their midst, the two young elf twins Helisah and Aegras, up to their own version of mischief on its behalf.

A great beginning to this series, a potentially epic fantasy series in the making. It's well edited and the author has a wonderful writing style and the story unfolds seamlessly.

A series well worth considering, packed with suspense, action and intrigue and even a little romance. A very enjoyable read about an intriguing world populated by unique characters.

I received a copy of Destruction in exchange for my honest review.

The story was interesting but I really struggled with the diary format of this book. It made it hard for me to feel invested to any character that wasn't Helisah, the one writing the diary. Getting diary entries to summarize the story seemed to allow for a quick pace of reading but at the same time I felt like i was missing details that could have allowed me to get into the story more. Towards the end I did find myself curious what comes next, so I do plan to read the next one (and it really did read fairly quickly once I got going).

If you can get past the diary format and become invested in story/characters, the series does have potential and is an interesting read.

I was given this book by the author in exchange for an honest review. I have to say that I am not a big fan of diary novels but for this story it worked. This is a good fantasy novel the story flowed well making it a quick easy and enjoyable read. I felt a little disconncted from the characters but I think that is a result of my bias towards this style of writing rather than the novel its self. I won't go into the details of the story here but if you like fantasy novels and you are looking for something unquie give this novel a go,

I was given this book last year for a review, and am finally getting around to it now. I tried several times to get into this book, but I didn't really enjoy the style of writing. I really wanted to give a good review because the plot seems interesting, but it's just not my cup of tea.
