His Very Own Vampire

Rate this book

Vampire Truelock's job for the last several hundred years has been protecting the President of Archer Industries, a family-run company that has done very well for itself. Since the current patriarch, Desmond Archer, is getting ready to officially retire from the company that more or less runs itself, he sends True on a mission to protect his estranged grandson Lane.

Lane's mother stopped speaking to her father Desmond when Lane was only a few years old and has told her son that his grandparents are all dead. He has no idea that he's even an heir to a fortune. So when a handsome stranger steps in and saves him from bodily harm just when he needs it, he's both grateful and a little suspicious. That suspicion only grows when bad things continue to happen to him, all seeming to stem from True's arrival and his claim that he's been sent by Lane's grandfather to protect him.

The fact that there's insane chemistry between Lane and True doesn't help either of them untangle the mystery regarding the danger's source. Can they find the answers before Lane's unknown enemies manage to do him permanent damage?

Often referred to as "Space Cowboy" and "Gangsta of Love" while still striving for the moniker of "Maurice," Sean Michael spends his days surfing, smutting, organizing his immense gourd collection and fantasizing about one day retiring on a small secluded island peopled entirely by horseshoe crabs. While collecting vast amounts of vintage gay pulp novels and mood rings, Sean whiles away the hours between dropping the f-bomb and persuing the kama sutra by channeling the long lost spirit of John Wayne and singing along with the soundtrack to "Chicago."

A long-time writer of complicated haiku, currently Sean is attempting to learn the advanced arts of plate spinning and soap carving sex toys.

Barring any of that? He'll stick with writing his stories, thanks, and rubbing pretty bodies together to see if they spark.

A vampire as a bodyguard is a pretty cool idea. With all the strength and speed advantages, I imagine anyone hiring him could feel pretty safe. In this story, True has been in the same rich family’s services for a few hundred years, taking on each new generations as the old patriarch retired. The current situation is no different, except Desmond is putting him in charge of one of the grandsons’ safety, seeing as the mother broke off her relationship with him many years ago. Lane, said grandson, has no idea he has a living grandfather, having been told Desmond died, and knows nothing about his generous trust fund. What follows is a wonderfully humorous story as True introduces himself, saving Lane from a rather awkward situation, and Lane refuses to believe a word True says.

Lane is a realist and has a sensible head on his shoulders – most of the time. When he dabbles in BDSM and the Dom wants acts Lane is not interested in, the situation gets ugly, and Lane is saved only by True’s interference. Lane is understandably suspicious about a total stranger telling him things that can’t be true – Lane KNOWS his grandfather is dead, his mother told him! – and when bad events continue to happen, that suspicion doesn’t exactly go away. On the other hand, True keeps saving him…

True is an excellent bodyguard who takes his job seriously. He is also very good at it, and he is loyal toward his employer. So even though Lane refuses to accept his services, True persists. There is a strong attraction between them that True decides to ignore – until he realizes it may be a true mate bond that is forming between them. It makes getting Lane to safety even more important; assassins sent to kill Lane be damned.

If you like your vampires with a touch of humor and don’t mind a few assassination attempts, if two men who have never met before succumbing to the mate bond are your thing, and if you’re looking for a read that is very entertaining, sometimes funny, and contains lots of hot action between the sheets (and elsewhere), then you will probably like this novella.

A cute little read about a vampire body guard who is sent to take care of his bosses estranged grandson. It doesn't take long until someone is trying to kill Lane and the vamp has noted Lane is his true mate and is hustling him back to the heretofore presumed dead Grandfather's house, to determine one of the other grandchildren is trying to take out the competition for the fortune. But as someone noted, it's more of an outline with none of the loose ends really being tied up, what about the other grandson, being a mate, Lane being estranged, etc. *shrug* I always feel a bit like I'm left at the end of these going "that's it?". The quality is fine but they just seem kind of half finished.

Rethinking M/M Romance Intimacy that Reads Like Heterosexual Love

This story was a decent little novella of erotic romance, but what was really interesting to me was how it challenged some of the preconceptions I had about how women writing m/m romances manifests (particularly in sex scenes). My thoughts on the subject are posted here.

Review:

Tagline: Lost human heir inherits a hot vampire protector

A brief, entertaining novella that has a minimal but interesting story leading to a nice, heated payoff in the end. The set-up, a vampire serving a human house, is different and intriguing, although the story is so short I wanted to know much more about how "short-lived" mortals would keep a long-lived vampire in their service as a bodyguard for generations. The connection with a human heir who did not know his family led to some nice interaction with a drifter who suddenly finds a vampire out to protect him. Finally, the ultimate physical connection was nicely intense for me. Overall, it was short and nothing particularly bewitching, but an enjoyable little diversion in any case.
