I don't usually rate the books I read with my son, but this one deserves some recognition. Super cute book about finding the perfect name for a new puppy.
I (as well as my 2 year old) loved the illustrations and the story flows nice and easy for little minds to follow.
I don't own a dog, but if I did I'd love a Golden Retriever so this children's book was perfect for me. Beautifully illustrated by Simon Mendez it tells the story of a little boy named Ben. He gets a new puppy and is eager to choose the perfect name. But the puppy just wants to explore and play.
It's a fun story which is super cute and I'm sure children will love the illustrations and the adventure as much as I did.
“I don’t really mind what name you choose, as long as you give me lots of cuddles.”
Ben, a little boy, tries to come up with a name for his rambunctious puppy, while the puppy explores his new surroundings with muddy results. The puppy finds his own name that way.
Adorable illustrations. This is a popular one with my students.
I love dogs, I have two of them myself. Muddy Paws reminds me of one of my dogs and it is just too cute. I enjoyed the relationship between the boy and his dog in this book and how it allowed him to make friends. I think this would be a great first day of school book four early elementary.
I picked this book because I love how it makes you think about the world around you. This little boy looks at his environment trying to find the perfect name for his new puppy. I also like how the story is constantly bringing you back to the fact the puppy likes to play in mud.
Muddypaws, written by Moria Butterfield and illustrated by Simon Mendez, is a story about a little boy who gets a new puppy. Ben knows he needs to give the new puppy a name, but he has no idea what to call it. He figures he will take the puppy on different adventures to see if he can come up with a name. However, no matter where Ben and the puppy end up, the puppy always ends up getting into mud or dirt leaving him with muddy paw prints. Ben eventually picks up on this and decides to name him Muddypaws.
I really love the illustrations that Moria Butterfield did in this story. It is amazing to me how real Ben and the puppy look the whole time. The fact that Ben is a blonde hair, blue eyed boy makes me think that she wants the readers to be able to connect with him because most people know somebody that looks like that. The puppy seems to be a Golden Retriever, which I think is perfect because that seems to be a very common dog in the US just like the looks of Ben. I think the realistic nature of this books makes kids be able to picture it easier.
I think the tone of this story fits in perfectly with how it is written. I would say the tone of Muddypaws is playful. This seems to fit so well because little boys are always playful as well as little puppies. Although the puppy was causing a mess everywhere he went, it never seemed like there was any distress in the story. Ben's facial expressions always seem to be curious or happy looking showing that this is suppose to be a very lighthearted book that most children will like because it is a relationship between a young boy and his puppy.
This is a cute book especially for young ones who have pets at home! This book is about a little boy who gets a new puppy but has no idea what he is going to name his puppy! So after days and days of hunting for a name and several accidents of making muddy pawprints everywhere by tipping over a flower pot, jumping in the mud, falling in the pond and many more accidents, the little boy knows exactly what he is going to name his new puppy! Muddypaws!! I enjoyed the repeating line of "and that's just what he did!" This line lets the readers know that this dog is full of clever ideas that result in some incidents but since the little dog was the muddiest, funniest puppy there ever was Ben thinks his new name for his dog is perfect!
The illustrations are quite simple, with some washed out/light use of watercolor materials but I personally thought that they were adorable! The puppy was so cute and would make any little child tell hundreds of stories about what their dogs does! The design and layout of the pages is also unquie and adds a wonderful visual effect that goes along with the theme and what is occuring throughout the illustrations!
I thought Muddy Paws was a great story. The story is something that all children can relate to because most children would love a new puppy. Something that resonated with me were the illustrations they were very detailed and a child would love them. I was most drawn to the ending of the book when the family found their new puppy's name. My transaction was most powerful when the puppy brought in muddy paw prints into the house because my dog has done the same. I will carry with me how happy this book was I think it was very entertaining and children would love it. I would recommend this book because all children love animals. I would use this in my classroom for free reading time because I think it would be a child favorite.
Ben must name his new puppy, who's awfully interested in the dirt behind that pot, tree, backyard, etc. Oh that dog! He just keeps getting his paws muddy.
Cute book. Will be a hit with the K-2 animal/dog picture book fans. Friendly and nice. Although, the book's about Ben picking a name for his dog, so maybe it'd be nice if you didn't title the book the way you did. Just a thought.
Between 3/4 stars, depending upon how much you like dogs. Have you had a puppy and/or do you want a puppy? It's an automatic 4 for you.
In Muddypaws (2008), written by Moira Butterfield and illustrated by Simon Mendez, little boy Ben gets a new puppy but can't decide what to name him. The puppy gets bored with the search and does what puppies do...get in to things. Eventually, he earns his new name...Muddypaws.

My daughter told me to put this book on when I asked her about some of the good books we've read. I think she likes it because we have two new puppies at the house. :) I'm not sure it's "Award Winning," but it was a hit at our house.
An excellent picture book that tells the story of a young boy trying to find a name for his new puppy. I've read it to several school classes, and the students adored the book. I have a hard time keeping it on my shelves.
The cutest book ever. A little boy gets a Golden Retriever puppy who gets into everything! There are muddy pawprints everywhere! No wonder he gets named Muddy Paw. My favorite thing about the book is that the picture of the little boy and his puppy look just like MY little boy and HIS puppy!
Very sweet children's book that the kids enjoy at the preschool that I work at. I will be checking out more books like this from the library soon to read to them.
