The author worked harder on her mystery this go around. Jill is spending more time with Grandma and less with her selfish sister, Kathy. Winky is still all sass, he's now been introduced to the twins. Fun play on words with the title!

Picking up in intensity a notch

Just so, though. I am now fully aware that the series is currently 30 volumes in... Not gonna lie, that made me cringe a bit. That's a looong commitment to a single character. However, fun story and smart plot!!

Very cute series

I am very pleased with this series, it is very uplifting and easy going. It is a simple read that my daughter (8 years of age) can read together. We find some humor in the book, Jill is neurotic but funny too.

This is just what I needed with the doom and gloom starting to really get to me. This series is a light, fun paranormal cozy involving a witch P.I., her one-eyed sarcastic cat, her fanatical knitter receptionist, a super-grumpy high witch grandmother, and various other quirky family members. A variety of cases and bursts of action round the stories out perfectly. In this installment the mc works on two different cases, continues to train with her grandmother, and faces an unexpected being.

Good, solid stories, but some details receive short shrift. If the author would flesh them out more completely, they'd be a much better read.

I want to like this series

I want to like this series. I have made it through 6 books so far. I dont think I have a 7th in me though. I like the setting of the stories, the witchcraft and I am genuinely interested in the cases and in the main character's love life. Will she end up with Jack or Drake? I also enjoy the easy going style of the books. They are a nice read, a perfect way to spend an afternoon.

However, the family dynamics are just terrible. Jill is a pushover for every member of her family and every member takes advantage pretty much to the point of abuse. It is distracting from the story when I find myself hoping Jill recognizes and frees herself from these toxic relationships. I also, hate the cat, I'm sorry to say. Winky is misogynistic and crass and brutal in his rudeness.

I also wonder about this dark one storyline. It started out strong but, has tapered off to almost nonexistence in favor of fights over segregated cookies and beanies. If there was an organization that had tried to outright kill you wouldn't that be more of a priority? Why doesn't her witch family fill her in? It is a glaring plot hole.

I started the 7th book but realized I had to put it down and write this review when Jill agrees to driver her cat to a dart competition and cant say no to the woman who insists on being her secretary.

Bottom line is this is a series I want to love but it makes me cringe too much to continue.

This is such an amusing little series. The perfect palate cleanser between heavier reads. A PI witch and her one eyed cat, Winky. These books always crack me up.

I know... I have a lot to say when a book upsets me.

But this book is the kind of book that restores my faith in books, after a bad read. I normally just put my 5 stars and think, "anything I write about this book is going to be embarrassing, compared to the talent of this author." But... I just wrote a very harsh review about a depressing book disguising itself as a light escape. So I'm going to try to do justice to this: my attempt at a five star book review.

Jill Gooder is happily single. She's interested in men, but she's got a good life on her own. (Psst... Adele Abbot, if you read this, could Jill and Daze please be a couple? Daze is SO HOT, and the men in the story are not treating Jill like the treasure we know she is.)

Jill runs her own business, brilliantly solves crimes, and finds time to study hard. She is generous, sweet, and kind, yet Jill stands up for herself.

Jill is always saying things that make me literally laugh out loud. (Jill outs me as a crazy book lady.) Jill is always THINKING things that are even more hilariously funny than the witty things she says.

Jill makes mistakes, owns up to them, and still loves the people (and animals) who endlessly tease her about them.

Jill is brave, clever, humble, and endlessly entertaining.

When I'm down, I step into these books and escape to a place where Jill is my friend, and she's sharing her adventures with me.

Thank you, Adele Abbot, for the gift of these stories.

Since I don't normally write reviews unless I have something specific to say, here's the break down of how I rate my books...

1 star... This book was bad, so bad I may have given up and skipped to the end. I will avoid this author like the plague in the future.

2 stars... This book was not very good, and I won't be reading any more from the author.

3 stars... This book was ok, but I won't go out of my way to read more, But if I find another book by the author for under a dollar I'd pick it up.

4 stars... I really enjoyed this book and will definitely be on the look out to pick up more from the series/author.

5 stars... I loved this book! It has earned a permanent home in my collection and I'll be picking up the rest of the series and other books from the author ASAP.

Entertaining

This series is very entertaining but like most series with supernatural beings, I find the obstacles put in their path to be very contrived. There is no explanation for why Hill couldn't just transport herself away from the danger, that's how she travels to and from Candlewood. And there are other situations that similarly, spells that she has learned seemed like they would have come in very handy, and made pretty short work of the problem. Her neighbor and his two year cancellation fee, since upping his fee, I would have thought she could have felt fine with causing him to forget she signed the contract. Also, she should have just said that she would have to charge him for the makeover.

A good comedic mystery

Jill continues to grow as an investigator and witch, while her love life seems to be heading a good direction as well. Two murders and they don't appear to be connected but something just doesn't sit right and Jill is determined to figure it out. Jack is back and Jill seems to be in his good graces for now. I laughed and really enjoyed the book, I only want the romance, any one of them, to pick up please!

This is the sixth book in the series, and Jill acted a little different in this one. At least the first half of it. She had another mystery to deal with, but she also had a lot of family drama as well.

This one is probably my least favorite of the series. I really hated how Jill acted in this one. It was beyond annoying, and I really wish she would just pick a guy to be completely interested in and leave the others alone.

How can I say this nicely. I liked the books at first, but I just got tired of the main getting so much abuse from her family and friends. They never once respected her boundaries. She has OCD and they make fun of her. They set her up when she asks them not too. They give her so much grief. I'm just done with this series.

A Witch P.I. Mystery book 6

This book was more serious than previous volumes, but still lots of fun. New characters are emerging, old ones are taking on new dimensions and the poor beanie mutilations continue.

"Witch is When The Penny Dropped" by Adele Abbott is the 6th installment in the series. While it has its merits, I'm still determining if I'll continue with the rest of the books. On the positive side, the series offers quick, easy reads, and a few characters manage to entertain. It's a great way to while away an afternoon.

One of the drawbacks is that there are a staggering number of books in the series (47 at the time of this review), making it feel like a significant commitment. Additionally, the main character, Jill, comes across as a major pushover, allowing various family members to take advantage of her, which can be frustrating.

The "The Dark One" plotline feels a bit contrived. It's somewhat puzzling that a character so dangerous doesn't draw more attention or effort from the witch community, especially given Jill's supposedly powerful grandmother. It leaves me questioning the consistency of the world-building.

On the positive side, I appreciate that not all the mysteries in the series revolve around murders, as this book includes a subplot about a struggling business. It adds variety to the storyline.

In summary, "Witch is When The Penny Dropped" has its merits with its easygoing style and occasional entertainment. Still, the long series and some frustrating character dynamics give me pause about continuing. If you're looking for a light and undemanding way to spend an afternoon, this series might be worth exploring but don't expect groundbreaking storytelling or character development.

Final thoughts
Not a lot really happened apart from her cases in this book which was nice to see her actually be a detective and not just happen upon these or finally figure them out. Instead she uses good detective work to figure it out who killed the sister and who is driving business away.
No real personal life happens.

The only thing I do not like about this series is the little teaser bit in the last chapter. I am not a fan of cliffhangers by ANYONE. If I just read up until the last couple of pages, this is a great book. I like how the author weaves detective work through with the paranormal and the larger plot that is going across several books. Even though that story is on going, you are not focused on it when you are in the books. And, if you had not read the ones before, you get a quick briefing of the character, and what is going on. The majority of the book is about the mystery (or mysteries) that she is trying to solve. In this one it is a murder, and a couple of minor ones. (They all seem to have more than one in each book). The minor characters are getting more well rounded, and of course her sidekick talking cat and knitting PA are great secondary characters. I will continue the series, but, again, wish the teasers were non existent.

This was my 6th book. I have to say I am really aggravated at the way everyone talks to this gal. She has to deal with an a-hole sister who forced the her to give up her beanie collection to her daughter. They have torn them to pieces and sewn them together. She has had to put up with a-hole neighbors, her grandmother, mother, aunt, cousins and on an on the list goes. Her dog, cat, hamster. It's constant.

She needs to develop a BACKBONE!!! She seems to be quite clever at witch craft and solving mysteries. On every side people are trying to screw with her! The list is really long. I just don't understand this author. Why have a weak doormat for a character?????

She has a quick mind and quick wit, but no backbone. Everyone walks all over her. I don't know if I should read anymore. It is really depressing. Not fun to me at all. Just sad.

I’m not really sure what the titles of these books have to do with the story, but I liked this one too! In this one, jill solves the mystery of a man and a woman (unrelated) who were killed on the same day. The brother of the woman staged a big plot to kill their other brother so he could be with his fiancé. Then he framed the dead brother for the killing of their sister and the landlord of the building where she was killed.
Also in this story is a challenge to find the best witch. Ma Chivers and Grandma compete and it ends in a tie.
Jill is progressing in her witchcraft, but not much in her love life. Out of her many men, she’s definitely closest to Jack.
Another cute story. Onto the next!

This book has a double murder that they do not realize are linked until Jill gets lucky. Once again Kathy is irritating - although perhaps not as much as normal. The twins however are getting a bit more so, and Jill is not standing up for herself at all with them, or with Grandma. Also, she's suddenly become ridiculously man crazy. She's imagining a relationship with her accountant, Luther avoiding Drake, and blowing off Jack. Not to mention playing peeping Tom to Jethro, and deciding the date she was on for a case was the love of her life. Hopefully the ridiculous man-crazies tone down soon... and Jill gets a bit more backbone. It seemed like she was growing one in earlier books, but there has been some serious back sliding in the last couple.

Something Off

I do not know exactly what is wrong, but there was something off. It felt like the jokes were old or recycled, the mystery I was able to figure it out early in the story, and the "danger" felt contrived. I still like the story and the characters but it just felt like this time the author was just going through the motions. I was really disappointed in the dragon part of the story, maybe because I love anything dragon, but it was not at all interesting nor did I gleam anything new to story canon. I still love this plotline and I think Ms. Abbott is a fantastic writer.

A Date for Jill

In this installment, Jill has a young female client, Dot Comm, who wants to find out who killed her fiancé's sister. As always, Jill's unique investigative talents take her on many unusual excursions. She has fun capers with her cousins, Amber and Pearl and the three of them try to avoid Grandma. They also witness the Elite Competition , whose results disappoint Grandma. Jill of course finds the murderer, and the book has a great surprise ending. You'll love it!

Finally Jill's detective process revealed!

It only took a few books but now we have her actual deduction process and her doing some real detective work without her simply bumbling into the conclusion of the mystery. I like that this book is finally lending her some credit and it seems that Jack is starting to respect that she has actual P.I. skills. I really enjoyed myself with this one! These are truly getting better every book and the stories are developed further and further.

Another delightful instalment!

I can't get enough of these books! They really are very good! Jill is a delight, literally bouncing between the human world and witch world. They are really funny in places! Loving the witch side and seeing how she progresses. It is also lovely to see all the other characters evolve as well. As for this one there is a double homicide and dodgy dating sites to put anyone into a spin. Unfortunately am going to have to take a break soon as I only have 7 of the books! Wish I could magic them up some how!

4/5.
The books are still very good, but the humour becomes repetitious. Sometimes it really steales attention from the plot and I can't help myself with a thought that the author stood up on a sort of conveyor of this series. Maybe I'm completely wrong.
But I do like the characters and especially the main character Jill and Winky the cat. Wondering where the story will lead, so giving a go to the next one!

Sometimes the main PI story gets lost in all the personal stuff, then it comes back with a vengeance.

These books are great and always end on a cliffhanger.

Grandma now has competition; from someone who is determined to be the star of the show. It's an interesting dynamic.

Sister Kathy continues to be annoying. The twins are just plodding along and getting into scrapes. Winky is so brilliant. As is Mrs V. Can't wait for the next book.....

An overstuffed book that seems very unfocused

There's a lot happening in this book. A lot. Too much, in fact. The plot meanders all over the place until some very deus ex machina conclusions. The “jokes” are consistently on the mean side, of course, for the continuing saga of some rather petty, childish main characters. The ending is good & makes TDO seem less like a mcguffin. Interesting world, but I'd like to some growth from Jill et al.
