Praise for Alexander Fullerton: 'His action passages are superb, and he never puts a period foot wrong' (Observer) 'You don't read a novel by Alexander Fullerton. You live it' (South Wales Echo) ‘The most meticulously researched war novels that I have ever read’ (Len Deighton)
Alexander Fullerton was a bestselling author of British naval fiction, whose writing career spanned over fifty years. He served with distinction as gunnery and torpedo officer of HM Submarine Seadog during World War Two. He was a fluent Russian speaker, and after the war served in Germany as the Royal Navy liaison with the Red Army.
His first novel, Surface!, was written on the backs of old cargo manifests. It sold over 500,000 copies and needed five reprints in six weeks. Fullerton is perhaps best known though for his nine-volume Nicholas Everard series, which was translated into many languages, winning him fans all round the world. His fiftieth novel, Submariner, was published in 2008, the year of his death.
Alexander Fullerton (1924–2008) was a British author of naval and other fiction. Born in 1924 in Suffolk and brought up in France, he was a cadet during the years 1938-1941 at the Royal Naval College, Dartmouth from the age of thirteen. He went to sea serving first in the battleship Queen Elizabeth in the Mediterranean, and spent the rest of the war at sea - mostly under it, in submarines.
Fullerton's first novel SURFACE! sold over 500,000 copies. Then he worked on the 9-volume Nicholas Everard series that made his reputation.
A very good finish to this trilogy about the SBS. Really enjoyed both the first and the last in the series. Have a great insight into what the do or did alongside the SAS.
This was a five star yarn brought low by diabolical editing. Handbook is shot through with mis spellings and a poor understanding of how English is written or spoken.
For my money, Alexander Fullerton was one of the finest thriller writers of the 20th-century, his war service as a Royal Navy submariner giving him unique insights into military life. Sadly, hardly any of his back catalogue is still in print and none of his works are available as ebooks.
If you can hold of them, the 'SBS (Special Boat Service) trilogy', Special Deliverance, Special Deception and Special Dynamic are terrific books.
In Special Deception a disgraced former SBS officer is recruited by British intelligence to lead a band of mercenaries on a clandestine mission in Syria. But all is not what it seems, they're headed for a deadly trap.
This is the best of the SBS books. Full of suspense, action and intrigue. And you learn a neat trick with a hand-grenade and a jam-jar.
