"THE WORLD" A STAND ALONE, all-encompassing look at the wider world of EAST OF WEST. Part atlas, part encyclopedia, part timeline, and part apocrypha, EAST OF THE WORLD is the must-have one-shot companion to the spellbinding series. EAST OF THE WORLD will contain pivotal plot and character info that will not be in the regular series...so don't miss out! The Apocalypse is illuminated in EAST OF THE WORLD.

A rarity in comic book series as this is a one-shot that is very much worth reading and integral to truly enjoying this series, with a short story on the three Horsemen followed by two highly informative summaries of the each of the seven nations. The cherry on top is a timeline from the Fire In The Sky event that led to the emergence of the seven nations and the key historical points up to the Second Apocalypse days of the 2060s. Now this is what I call world building! 8.5 out of 12. I recommend reading this after reading volume four to absolutely remove any chance of any spoilers. 2021 read, 2019 read
Companion to the series, gives a timeline on the 7 states and how things happened, also a brief bit about the horsemen at the start, and info on all the states regarding power levels (economy, military, leadership, and future stability)... Kinda seems a wee bit o a cash grab...not important unless you're really into East of West...
A companion source book to East of West. It opens with a short with the Horseman and then becomes more of a text book, with a classic Hickman timeline graph taking up the back.
East of West is a little hard to follow at times when you read it in monthlies, so this book is handy to have to keep track of things.
If I had bought this on its own I'd probably feel ripped off. But since it's part of Volume 4 it feels like a nice debriefing. If you like worldbuilding as much as me it's a lot of fun learning about all the stats of each nation and empire. Particularly the Endless Nation- who have really captured my imagination as of late. It weirdly kinda spoils what happens to Texas on chapter 16 tho...
Long live the conquered state of Texas. States on the front cover source book/Atlas/Encyclopedia/time lines/Apocrypha. It's just what it says it is. An excellent source material to follow along with while you are reading the series. Helps sort things out and keeps things in a bigger picture as you move along.
THIS IS A STAND IN REVIEW FOR EAST OF WEST YEAR 3. (Also kind of the series as a whole)
I finally finished East of West, and I'm so happy I sprung on this series, cause it was every bit as amazing as the first volume made me think.
I've never been a huge Western guy, but a couple years back I watched Westworld and got a whole new appreciation for the setting, and the people of those stories. Jonathan Hickman did a very similar thing, but to a much, much greater extend. Not for a single second wasn't I one the edge of my seat. Around every corner and in what seemed to be every issue I got answers to questions asked since the beginning, but I also got more questions! All of these were questions I didn't need answered, but I was dying to have answered non the less.
Hickman understands long form story telling unlike most other writers and East of West might just be the perfect example of that. The twisting and turning of the prophecy, whilst never breaking it, but always staying surprising was incredible. I bet if I read this thing issue to issue as it was coming out, I'd have had a million theories and I wouldn't have been right about a single one.
That's not to say that there isn't anything bad about it as well. Personally I though the story could've easily been 10 (maybe even 20) issues longer. The final couple of issues felt like they were rushing the story along for a bit. This made some final confrontations comparably small to some lesser confrontations of the series, which was a little disappointing.
East of West is one of the few stories I've had to pace myself with. Not because it was hard to understand, or I needed to mull something over, but simply because I was enjoying it so much I wanted it to last just a little longer.
Finally this whole review would be pointless, irrelevant and laughable if I didn't mention Nick Dragotta. He does such a unique almost anime-inspired style that is absolutely perfect. I give a lot of credit to Hickman, but East of West would've never been the masterpiece it is without Dragotta. His characters are so full of life and just from glancing their figures you can tell them apart. The move differently, they display their emotions so vividly you could almost follow the story just by looking at the pictures. And there are SO many characters in this story, and he manages to make all of them so damn distinct! I don't think I mistook one character for another at any point, which is amazing for me.
Honestly I could keep praising this series to the end of time, but just know this: East of West is one of the most epic, well told and consistent creator owned book I've read.
This is a one-shot guide to the East of West world, subtitled "Sourcebook | Atlas | Encyclopedia | Timelines | Apocrypha." It serves as a reference to the convoluted history and politics of the series, as well as an intermission before "The Apocalypse: Year Two," the next big story arc.
It's clearly intended for people who are already fans of the series, and should be very useful in keeping a perspective on the players and events. I don't think it really gives any new information, but it's nice to have it organized for easy reference. I'm looking forward to having it available when I resume reading the series.
Random teaser issue that gives a little bit of background into the world of East of West. I thought this would be a little more substantial and have more artwork- possibly some sketches, but it unfortunately left much to be desired. East of West is one of my favorite comics though and I relish any extra bit of information I can get. Can't wait to see what's in store.
If this was meant to pull me into the series, it failed. It was interesting as a study, but didn't give me quite enough to make me want to learn more. Felt more like I was reading a set of annotations, a companion. I suppose that's what it is meant to be, so including this in the humble bundle left me puzzled.
Not a must read for East of West, but it helps give a little background on the world. It's short and I would recommend reading Book two of the trades (I think?) before looking at this one as it spoils a few things. That was a little disappointing as I had only read book one.
