The long-awaited seventh novel in the popular Roger and Suzanne mystery series is the second novel starring prize-winning dog Juliet as a featured character. Suzanne, with a lot of help from Bruce, enters Juliet and her puppy Romeo in several local hunt tests. Naturally, Suzanne finds a dead body at the hunt test venue her first time handling Romeo. Roger, recruited at the scene by an old friend from the local Sheriff’s Department, is asked to help in the murder investigation. It looks like an impossible case to solve. Roger launches a complex, multifaceted investigation, picks up a couple of paying clients and a new detective for his agency, and gets to learn all about canine hunt tests. There’s plenty of suspense as we join the dogs and the detectives hunting their prey while also peeking into the Southern California social scene and lifestyle. A must for German shorthaired pointer and other hunting dog owners, breeders, and handlers, dog lovers in general, and mystery fans. All of the books in this series can be read as standalone entries or in series order.
It was interesting to read about the hunt tests. I owned German shorthanded pointers for many years and with the passage of time i have no dogs. I lived in n. California and have been to many of the locations mentioned in the book. It was a pleasure to relive those times through jerry's imagination.
This book was great in letting someone know the ins and outs of preparing a dog for performing in dogs hunt test and the quality you would need in becoming a very good detective but the story itself was weak😴.
When Suzanne takes her new puppy, Romeo, out for his first official hunt test, his sensitive nose guides her straight to a dead body. Of course! Suzanne has a talent for finding bodies, so husband, Roger, and his team become involved in the complicated murder investigation. Suzanne and Bruce work to put hunting titles on their canines and keep their senses attuned to finding clues.
As a former participant in conformation and obedience dog shows, I enjoyed learning how hunt tests worked in between unraveling the sleazy background of the murder victim. The methodical detective work is well-told and many valid suspects are uncovered. I'm pleased that Roger manages to work in harmony with the police force, actually providing valuable support rather than conflict that so many detective programs on television foster. The victim was a real piece of work, a womanizer, a money launderer for the mob, and the worst kind of crooked real estate investor. Who wouldn't want to knock the guy off? Of course, it is necessary for Roger to find the real culprit and earn his large fee.
If you enjoy a police procedural, a complicated mystery, clever investigating that all takes place in an unusual setting, this book hits high on all marks. Although it is part of a series, there is enough information provided for a new reader to enjoy the story as a standalone book. I was provided a review copy of the novel in exchange for an honest review. I honestly enjoyed the book and recommend it highly.

Hunter Down from the Roger and Suzanne Mystery Series is written by Jerold Last. While participating in a hunt test with her dog Romeo at a club, Suzanne, who has the unfortunate knack for discovering bodies, finds the body of Don Leone. The victim was an unpopular realtor with many enemies. Roger is asked by his friend, Sergeant Hightower in the local Sheriff’s Department, to assist in solving the murder and the victim’s widow also requests his help.
Roger soon has his hands full following leads, while trying to understand how a hunt test works, and hires a former FBI agent to assist his investigation. The hunt tests keep Suzanne busy, but she makes a very valuable contribution to the case that has the Sheriff’s Department baffled.
Dog lovers will like reading Hunter Down by Jerold Last. The plot mainly focuses on hunt tests and provides in-depth information about the types of dogs that are used and how these entertaining tests are performed. It is not only the dogs who have to learn new tricks, but their owners too.
The murder investigation is very suspenseful, mostly due to the fact that Roger and his team often find leads or do their planning during a hunt or over one of the tempting meals, which are often described. The story is moderately paced and very nicely written, and the cover illustration is very attractive and appropriate. Hunter Down is Book 12 from the Roger and Suzanne Mystery Series and I enjoyed reading it.
You like dogs? You like detective stories? If the answer is affirmative, then you’ll enjoy this book. Hunting birds with pointer dogs is a completely new world to me and the detailed information provided by the author on this topic makes for fascinating reading. Training, trials, competitions, clubs involving pointer dogs and their owners all seem to be part of a very wholesome, healthy lifestyle, but, beneath the surface lurks lust, greed, organized crime and murder. When a member of the club is shot dead, Roger and his wife, Suzanne are soon in pursuit of the murderer. They follow an obscure, complex trail and eventually resolve what initially appeared to be an impossible case. The reader is ably guided towards a satisfying, surprising finale. “Hunter Down” is the first, but not the last, book I have read by Jerold Last. Although his writing style appears to be relaxed, he actually pays meticulous attention to detail achieving an original storyline with credible characters and situations. I’m glad I discovered this author and this book. I thoroughly recommend “Hunter Down” as a good read.
