Grandparents are so clever, and Grandpa has wise advice that Henry finds comfort in and follows, with great success. Unusual illustrations with line drawings on burnt yellow pages include photos of real objects, such as clothespins carefully placed on triangular fabric to look like waves.
I received a copy of this title from Simon & Schuster Australia for review.
Ten Second Synopsis: When Henry loses his favourite stuffed rabbit, his granddad suggests imagining that the bunny is still with him.
“Secret”-y business aside, this is a warm-hearted and comforting tale on the oft-used theme of “favourite toy lost” (such as in the actual classic books Dogger, The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane and Knuffle Bunny: A Cautionary Tale). After Henry imagines he has Raspberry with him, and falls asleep cosseted in the assuagement that his imagining brings, the postman finds Raspberry the rabbit in the path and delivers him safely home….thus proving the incredible power of the imagination to act upon the fabric of reality apparently.
The illustrations are quite atmospheric and feature a combination of simple line drawings overlayed with photographic elements. These do add significantly to the concept of imagination – I quite enjoyed a page featuring clothes pegs posing as snapping crocodiles – and the interplay between the photographic images and the drawings is satisfyingly subtle and effective. The earthy colour palette complements the gentle pace of the tale and the overall impression is of a carefully thought-out production.
As it stands, The Power of Henry’s Imagination is a quality-looking work and will no doubt achieve the effects of comfort and reassurance that go hand-in-hand with a “lost toy, found” story, for many of its young readers.
"Henry had so much fun imagining his many adventures with Raspberry that he completely forgot Raspberry was lost in the real world. In fact, when Henry went to bed that night, he fell asleep as quickly as he did when Raspberry was in his arms." Who is this author kidding?
Why is a "mailman" (prefer the non-sexist term "letter carrier") wandering around at night? The description of Raspberry in the text doesn't match the illustrations of Raspberry. The mixed-media art doesn't always support the text.
a book about losing a loved one and having great memories or imagining great adventures with them to help ease the pain of them being gone. In this book Henry loses his beloved rabbit. He imagines all the things they would have done that day and falls asleep that night without a real issue because of his incredible imagination. However the mailman had found the rabbit and returns it before Henry wakes the next day.
Henry does everything with his stuffed rabbit, but one day the rabbit is lost. After they look everywhere for it, Henry's grandfather suggests Henry just imagine the rabbit is with him. Henry is able to do that and they play all day and even go to sleep that night "together". Then, someone finds the stuffed animal outside in the dark.
I thought this was a cute story about using your imagination to take your mind off of something lost. The pictures weren't my favorite and I felt often did not go with the story line of the book. The story about the boy losing his rabbit but it being found in the end was okay but definitely not my favorite. I probably wouldn't use this book in my classroom!
I liked the advice that Henry's grandpa gives Henry advice about imagining his pet bunny "Raspberry" and the bad thing is Raspberry goes missing.I got this book since my school has suggested this book for me.My favourite character is Henry since cares a lot for his friends and pets and never stops searching for them if they get lost.
In today’s times children don’t play like I did as a child. They’ve got electronic devices, phones, iPads, and gaming systems. This book gives a fresh inviting twist to power up children’s imaginations. It’ll be in my read aloud to my fourth grade students.
I'm really torn with how I feel about this. On the one hand, I love Henry's relationships with his grandpa and his rabbit. The grandpa's advice to visualize the outcome he wants is something that feels a little too strange.
A good read for children - however, should spend a little longer on each page than skimming across in a rush to finish. A thoughtful story on the power of imagination and how the thoughts impact the results we receive
I read this back to back with Oliver Elephant, not knowing they were both about boys missing their lost toys. This one featured line drawings mixed with partial photos of real objects, as seen on the cover. Clever illustrations.
This one just didn't hit the mark with me or the kids. It's a great and creative little tale about a boy with a powerful imagination... but maybe it's the art style or something else. Just wasn't a winner.
Another love at first sight. A piece of art. Heart stealing illustrations(especially the night sky) with a story on the power of imagination! What's not to love?
Great book if your child has lost their favorite toy or lovey. It always helps my kids to read about another child handling an obstacle in a positive way.
