Caitlin Kittredge

Caitlin started writing novels at age 13. Her first was a Star Wars tie-in. Fortunately, she branched out from there and after a few years trying to be a screenwriter, a comic book writer and the author of copious amounts of fanfiction, she tried to write a novel again. Her epic dark fantasy (thankfully) never saw the light of day but while she was struggling with elves and sorcerers she got the idea of writing a story about a werewolf who fought crime.

Two years and many, many drafts later, she pitched Night Life to a bevy of agents and one of them, Rachel Vater, sold the series to St. Martin’s.

Caitlin collects comic books, print books, vintage clothes, and bad habits. She loves tea, loud music, the color black (especially mixed with the color pink) and ghost stories. She can drive a stick shift, play the violin and knows more English curses than American ones.

Caitlin lives in Olympia, WA with two pushy cats.

Really good ending to a cool series.

description

And by really good ending, I mean it could have been a bit less rushed. But if you consider that Kittredge was (I believe) planning for this title to go on longer than it did, it was actually excellent. All the loose ends were tied up, and there was quite a lot of character growth that I wasn't expecting - especially from Eve's mother.

description

I was very pleased by not only the explanations given about the past but also the new mysterious rash of killings that were happening in town. The new sheriff turned out to be a good edition, with everything in the story coming full-circle about him in a way I didn't actually expect at first.

description

If you're looking for a relatively short but good paranormal title, I'd definitely recommend Coffin Hill.

This last volume of Coffin Hill is the one that I enjoyed the most.

description

I’m not sure if it actually provided all the answers, because the first two volumes were so confusing at times that I can’t even remember the questions. It’s a bit of a puzzle, and I feel like I put all the pieces together, which is good, but the complete picture remains somewhat hazy.

description

This volume is the most conclusive in the series, I think. Even though there are again a few things happening off-page, which at times led to question marks popping up above my head. Transition from one scene to another still isn't always good. But overall I could follow this one more easily.

I didn’t really expect that Kittredge would introduce even more plot strands in this last volume. But apparently it wasn’t clear from the beginning that the story would end with volume 3. At least that’s how I read her afterword. If that really was the case, then she did a magnificent job to wrap this up. We don’t end on a cliffhanger, but with a nice feeling of closure.

description

Haunted Houses mainly revolves around a couple of kids that slaughtered their families, and around Eve’s equally crazy ancestors, dead or alive.

description
description

It was spooky, gory and entertaining. I liked it.

Inaki Miranda’s beautiful artwork is the star of this series. But character development and storytelling got better as it went on. I feel almost sorry that it ended after only three volumes.

Now I'm curious to see what my reading buddy thinks of this last volume. It didn't really look good in the beginning.

Caitlin Kittredge, writer, and Inaki Miranda, illustrator, ramp up the horror and the gore in the third and final volume of Coffin Hill, “Haunted Houses”.

The body count is higher in this as the Coffin Witch gains strength. We’re talking whole families being slaughtered in this issue, so be forewarned: this series isn’t for the squeamish.

In this issue: we learn a little more about Eve’s mom’s relationship with Lorelai; we find a hidden room; we get to see a glimpse of Hell; and Eve figures out away to stop the Coffin Witch for good and hopefully save all the trapped souls in the Coffin House.

To go into more detail would be spoilers, and I won’t do that.

An excellent conclusion to a superb horror graphic novel series. My only complaint is that I didn’t want it to end, as I have grown attached to Eve Coffin and would love to see more of her in subsequent adventures.

I'm so disappointed this is the final volume of Coffin Hill. This is a great horror comic with stunning visuals.

Kind of ambivalent about the plot. I skimmed most of this. The artwork was allover the place. Sometimes good, sometimes quite bad, with characters looking fairly different compared to the first two volumes.

Bottomline this wasn‘t really worth it for me. The plotting of the three volumes was just too chaotic. The artwork was mostly good, with a distinct downturn in some of the panels in the third volume.

I feel slightly duped. The final wrap was supposed to make up for the so-so ratings of the first two and finally explain what the whole deal was with the Coffin witch. I was so confused and couldn't care enough to try and re-read to see what I may have missed. I was just grateful I was done with this series. I was confused with which victim was which, the timelines that kept jumping back and forth, and a mystery that made no sense.

A solid ending.

What’s it about?
That would be hard to describe to those who ain’t already into Coffin Hill, skip!

Pros:
The story is still very interesting. It’s always interesting to see how a story you’re really into ends.
The art is pretty good.
The characters are good, well written characters.
The horror stuff in this volume! The creepy stuff and gore are turned up even more in this volume and since that’s definitely some of what I want from a horror story, I like it!
This book is very suspenseful.
The ending is a good way to wrap up the story.
The little author’s note at the end is nice.

Cons:
This volume seemed slightly more confusing than the previous two IMO. I mean I still mostly got it and all but yeah...
This volume seemed slower paced than the other 2. Not boring, just slower.

Overall:
First of all, I made the right choice reading this series for Halloween. I’d suggest anyone looking for good Halloween reads for these last few days in October definitely look at this series!
While this final volume has a couple minor issues IMO, it’s still great. A very interesting plot, good artwork, suspense and even more good horror stuff than the other 2 volumes!
I highly recommend this series!

Didn't like this volume quite as much as the second one. I'm not sure if this series got cancelled or if it was supposed to only be this long, but it FELT like it got cancelled and they were scrambling to wrap everything up in only a few issues. I liked that we got to see more of Eve's mom's past and the art and visuals were stunning as always, but it definitely got pretty convoluted there for awhile and then everything just sort of wrapped up very quickly. Definitely a more unique and interesting series than it looked at first glance, but I would have liked for it to go on a little bit longer just so everything could get the space it really deserved.

"You look like crap."
I can't believe how many times they've used this line over and over throughout the entire series.
We get it. The Coffin Witch case is so big that people involved barely sleep.
The many characters were drawn too similar, in my opinion. At times, it was hard telling each apart. Adding more to the already confusing plot.
In short, I regret giving this series a try.

This did have a decent ending, but overall I thought the second volume was the strongest of the three. At least we did get a definitive ending rather than something rushed, although I do think the writer had more to tell if the series had continued.

Overall a good Vertigo horror series, especially for readers into witches and witchcraft.

Overall, I am still really happy that I read this series, it was really good BUT the ending got really convoluted and rushed. It didn’t necessarily end in a way that I didn’t like, all of the loose ends were tied and the story was done but it was just rushed. I read in the acknowledgements that this author, Kittredge, planned for the series to go on a bit longer than it did so I can say she did her best getting it finished in a neat way when that wasn’t the original plan.
The reason why I felt like it was convoluted and somewhat “messy” to get to the finish line is due to the character count. In the previous two issues we were moving along nicely being introduced to each character as they came and getting some info on them and in the last couple issues there was a huge mass of characters, I was forgetting who was who especially all of the Coffin family women and it did get a bit hard. I feel like I need a reread on this series to fully grasp the ending.
All in all it was a really cool crime/horror story and of personally recommend it to a friend, just wish there was a way for comics to be completed to their entirety, seems like too many get cut short.

Took forever to get around to ordering the ILL copy of this last volume. Not sure what the deal is with the library, but they never seem to carry the final volume of certain series ("Rachel Rising" is another series I can think of that I can't seem to find the 'last' volume anywhere).

Despite not remembering a lot of details, it was a pretty good final volume. The art is great and the horror effects were pretty cool. I like the concept of a witch haunting the town through the descendants of the families that hung her, and I enjoyed the different twists that appeared in the different families. I could see this becoming an action-horror movie.

Coffin Hill Vol. 3 Haunted House collects issues 15-20 of the Vertigo Comics series written by Caitlin Kittredge and art by Inaki Miranda.

Eve is out of prison and must face her family's dark past.

I personally think this book is ridiculously bad, but it has its moments. The saving grace is the art and some of the ridiculous plot points. I think there are large portions of the book that don't make much sense. This is another book where lot of readers seem to have differing opinions than myself so I encourage you to make your own conclusions.

The saga of festering evil and bad blood in the Massachusetts woods concludes, and for all that events are clearly accelerating as they reach an endgame, and Kittredge's afterword confirms that the book was cancelled out from under her, there's not the same sense of incoherent rush that has blighted the finale of too many short-lived Vertigo books since the imprint lost its shine. Satisfactorily creepy and cathartic.

A Smashing Finale

Now that's a great ending to a pretty solid trilogy. Each book just builds on the last and as a fan of what is today now considered classic urban
paranormal fantasy, this is definitely a story that leaps off the pages and buries itself in that part of your psyche that believes the darkness alive but can be fought. Netflix should pick this gem up!

Review for the series as a whole.

So, first, this series was absolutely gorgeous. If I was reviewing based on artwork alone, I'd give it 6 stars. Absolutely gorgeous panels mixed with horrifically gory ones and all done with such precision, you can't help but stare at double page spreads for much longer than it takes to actually read them. As well, the writing was absolutely fantastic. Wonderfully confusing and heartbreaking and creepy in equal measure. You can tell Kittredge really knows how to turn a phrase, and although the introduction of the trade I read said she'd never written a comic book before, I'm not sure I believe that, because the pacing of the plot is perfect throughout all 3 volumes, which I know can be hard for first time comic writers, since the act of writing and timing for comics is so different from books or even scripts.

So why did I rate it simply four stars instead of 5? Just stupid personal preference. I like my horror stories a little dark, not super dark, and the horror got a bit darker in places than I find personally comfortable.

So don't worry about that. If you are the kind of person who likes proper horror, this series is definitely for you. Go on, go get a copy. You know you want to.

Another great volume! So I have been reading this series since the beginning and still stays consistently good in this volume! So Volume 3 continues on from the cliff hanger they left us on in Vol 2, we have a new interesting villain, who is very badass in her own right! This time around with Flashbacks it focuses not on Eve but her mother, which i quite liked, mixing it up a bit! The Mom was introduced at the beginning but they really built her character in this one! In the end its another great volume in a consistently good series!

This is the final volume in this horror graphic novel series, and there's not much I can say about this one without spoilers. What I will say is that the art continued to be good, the plot interesting, and the conclusion quite satisfying. This would make a great series to read during Halloween.

The final collection of the Coffin Hill comics and it was the best of the lot. Because this was an ongoing story, and because the structure, over all three books, was so complicated - it jumped back and forth in time, following different generations of Coffin Hill inhabitants, both living and dead - it could sometimes feel a little bitty. In this, the final volume, however, all those hanging (ha) story elements are pulled together, and the whole thing coalesces into a really solidly told story. I don't think it's much of a surprise what actually happens to the house, but the focus on family relationships echoing and echoing through the timeline mirrors the structure in a really interesting way.

And that cover is fantastic. I mean the art's generally very good, but the cover is outstanding.

Eve Coffin's curtain call!
I enjoyed this volume quite a bit. According to the other reviews, readers felt that it was rushed and/or tied up too clumsily. I can see where they're coming from but I think that it's a bit in keeping with the tone and pacing of the series, overall. Maybe I'm biased, having loved the first two volumes, but she (Kittredge) did the series finale some justice. I will say I share some readers' feelings about the jumping from time to time and see how it may not sit well with some readers (flashbacks seemed more paced out in the first two volumes). It seems like Kittredge had a lot she would've put into additional volumes had they come to fruition and had to lump it in before the final curtain call. I enjoyed it for the most part, though.
I will come back to these three volumes with a lot of fondness and enjoyment in the future!
Happy reading! 💖

Good ending, but I have to say I found myself a little confused many times when reading this. However, there was still a lot of things I loved about this volume. Art was great as always and there were a lot of incredible panels I wouldn’t ever get tired of looking at. I enjoyed seeing more of Eve’s mom and I think this issue is where I liked Eve the most. The new characters were a nice addition too. I like the way things wrapped up in the ending. Overall this was a pretty good series. I usually don’t like when stories go back-and-forth between past and present, but I mostly enjoyed it in this series. I wasn’t a big fan of Eve at first, but she grew up on me as the story went on. Definitely need to find more stories about witches because they can be very interesting!

Like my review of the first volume I am not going to say much, except that if you like supernatural stories with lots of mystery and really interesting characters and plot developments you need to read this series.

If someone in Hollywood who has the power to pitch and develop television series you need to snap this one up right away. This would make an excellent and riveting television series.

This was a much better offering than last volume and leaned in on the horror elements of the book. The Coffin Witches should be the stars/antagonists. The cop backdrop should be just that, backdrop. Sadly, the series ends with this volume. The art here was very good and extremely creepy at times. I really enjoyed this book.
