When The Tide Goes Out is quite different to the usual style of books I read. It is a thriller but of the environmental kind.

Having just spent our summer holiday in the Canary Islands I have to say I am glad I did not read this book before or during it.

The authors description of the islands are very picturesque and idyllic. He very much brings to life the scenery which was wonderful, saying that though he very much brought to life the devastation that is caused and left behind by a natural disaster. This for me was quite uncomfortable in parts to read but was very well written.

The story itself is set over 6 days and flicks between quite a few different characters. My favourite characters were Tom who lives in a remote part of the island with his dog Daisy and Consquela who is estranged from her husband and is trying to make a fresh start.

Through the characters current lives, the reader sees the chaos of loss and devastation as it starts to happen. It certainly makes for some tense reading in parts as you have no idea which, in fact if any, of the characters are going to survive.

When The Tide Goes Out is a thrilling and tense read. I can’t compare it to any other books as have read nothing similar but if you love films like 2012 and The Day After Tomorrow you will certainly love this book.

This is a well written novel, with enough info to educate, but not bore the reader. It takes place in a limited area, The Canaries. I do highly recommend this book to everyone.

It was a change from usual disaster books. No preppers in sight. Just a straightforward story about a natural disaster.

The writing was good and the plot believable and the pace is rapid.
The resulting disaster is only localized, whereas I was expecting impact to the coasts of America and Europe. Still it was a good read.

Good story

I enjoyed this story and the well-developed characters. It was also interesting to have the story centered in the Canary Islands. I am looking forward to his next book.
