This was cute. For anyone who needs a recommendation or cross reference, this put me in mind of Dearest Rogue by Elizabeth Hoyt. Similar character tropes and set up. You have a hero who is a retired soldier (Highland Regiment) turned bodyguard who is tasked to protecting and helping a lost heroine, who happens to be a Princess, find her way back home from the wilds of Scotland. If you loved Dearest Rogue I think you’ll like this one. This had all kinds of tropes I love. The Bodyguard trope. Forced Proximity. Marriage of convenience (which was a lovely surprise). A yummy gruff Scottish hero. Need I say more?
OK, this buy probably wasn’t a great idea. I knew from the back cover copy that it was going to grate on one of my pet peeves, and sure enough, it did.
I read historical romance because I dig history. I want to learn something new about the period I’m reading about, or at least have the sense of really “being there” in the time and place of the story. So when we start off with a character who’s the princess of a made-up country, that tells me that the author is willing to make stuff up to fit her story, and actual history be damned.
But there's also some good news. The story comes close to making up for it by serving up a fair portion of danger and adventure. And guys in kilts.
I'm not going to detail the story—the back cover copy pretty much spells it out. Good news—hunk in a kilt, danger and excitement. Bad news—predictable and not so historical. End result…
HIGHLANDERS!!! Yes! lol This was a lovely little romance of a Highlander and a Princess on the run. So the quick of it is that Princess Mercedes found herself in a nightmare. She was heading home when her coach was stopped and all of her companions killed. She was able to make her escape and eventually found herself at a small pub in desperate need of help which was found in the form of a Highlander who became her champion.
I loved the set up. I fell for Daniel almost instantly. When Mercedes landed at the pub and asked for help nearly everyone laughed at her because really a Princess? No question about it. The chit was crazy. They were about to throw her out and Daniel stepped in and made sure she had a place to sleep, food, and new clothes provided. He didn't believe she was a Princess either but she was in need and he wanted to see her safe and cared for. I mean. I was like *swoon* lol Their journey of getting her from Scotland to London and her friends was entertaining. The slowly brewing romance, the friendship, potential danger as those who were out for her tracked her down again. They were likable characters and I just enjoyed their journey--both the physical and emotional ones. Warren effortlessly captivates and draws you into a wonderful world of love, romance, and adventure. I'll definitely be reading more from the series!
The Narration:
This was my first time listening to Justine Eyre. In the end I enjoyed her narration but it did take some getting used to. I know it's a weird thing to be bothered by but when she did breathless or whispering type moments it just drove me crazy. I liked her female voices, though, and her male voices grew on me rather quickly. She had a nice pace and pulled me into the story. It typically takes me a good two weeks to finish an audiobook since I listen to them on the side but I finished this one in less than a week. I do think her narration played a good part in that. I also quickly downloaded another of her narrations after finishing. So breathless whispery moments aside...not bad. Not bad at all.
It was sweet, and what I really liked was that the story focused on their romance we didn't spend too much time on mystery and back stories for the villain but there was still a mystery which was nice. i recommend reading .
Fun book with romance, humor and a bit of action. Mercedes is on her way to London from Scotland when her coach is attacked. Barely making her escape, Mercedes hides out in the woods until it's safe, then makes her way to an inn. Wet and bedraggled she is stunned when no one believes that she is a princess in need of assistance, and wonders what she is going to do.
Daniel is a former soldier on his way home to Skye. While stopped at an inn to get out of the weather he is surprised by the appearance of a young woman claiming royal blood and an attempt on her life. He doesn't believe her claims, but he does see that she is truly frightened, and after some soul searching agrees to help her get to London. It's a two week journey that turns out to be more dangerous than Daniel expected, to both his body and his heart.
I really enjoyed the journey as both Mercedes and Daniel learn a lot about themselves and each other. As a princess, Mercedes has never had to be at all self-sufficient. But when her coach is attacked, she has only herself to depend on. Her fear as she ran was very real, but she also had the intelligence to know that she couldn't outrun her pursuers and was able to hide. She had never had the problem of no one believing what she said, so her trouble at the inn was something she didn't know how to deal with. Her gratitude for Daniel's intervention was real as was her frustration at not being able to convince him of who she is. As they head south to London, Mercedes realizes that as a princess she has been sheltered from real life. There are some terrific scenes as she experiences new things such as gathering wood, cleaning and feeding a baby. I loved watching her grow from a slightly spoiled girl to a thoughtful and confident woman.
Daniel is dealing with his own issues of returning home after years at war. There's not much there for him as both of his parents have died, and there isn't much of a home to go to. His family's lands had been taken after Culloden and he has little in the way of resources. He steps in to help Mercedes because as a gentleman he can't just desert her. He doesn't believe her claims, but he will get her to her friends who can help her. He doesn't anticipate all the complications that result from his decision.
I loved the romance that developed between them. Daniel was attracted to her, but realized that she was an innocent and off limits to him. In spite of his disbelief over her claims, he was still very protective of her. I loved seeing him comfort her when she had nightmares about the attack, and how he tried so hard to keep his desire under control. As they made their journey he couldn't help but admire the way that she made the best of their situation. He starts to picture her as a permanent part of his life. He also knows that she has been thoroughly compromised, and uses that to convince himself that it's only right for him to marry her. As they get closer to London, there is another attack, and he realizes that she has been telling the truth all along. Now he is feeling the differences between them and fears that she will regret their marriage. Once they get to London, he thinks his fears will be realized, and tries to do what he believes is best for her. I liked seeing him stand up to her father, even though he gave in to the arguments. I also liked that he couldn't quite give up all hope and was there for her when she needed him.
I loved Mercedes and her development from sheltered girl to amazing woman. She is drawn to Daniel from the beginning, but at first believes it is just because he rescued her. She knows she is going to need help to get to London, and I loved watching her efforts to convince him. I loved the trust she had in him from the start, and really liked the scenes where he was helping her through her nightmares. She spends a lot of time getting to know him and that knowledge creates a change in her feelings from gratitude to love. It was also fun to see her awakening attraction to him and how it changed her. She did fall back into her old ways very briefly when they got to London, hurting Daniel in the process, but she realized her mistake quickly. I loved the ending and seeing her stand up for what she wants.
The question of who was after Mercedes and why was pretty well done. I liked seeing she and Daniel escape most of the danger thanks to Daniel's instincts and lessons learned in the war. I had no clue as to who was behind it until closer to the end, and felt that it was a realistic scenario. The final confrontation was really good, as once again Mercedes doesn't wait around for rescue but makes her own escape attempt. I also loved seeing Daniel earn the respect of Mercedes's father. There was also a nice twist at the end that made their future so much easier.
Her Highness and the Highlander promises exactly what you expect from the cover and blurb. However, if you’re looking for anything even remotely historically accurate, you’d better move swiftly on by.
This is the second in a series, and while I’ve read some reviews that said it was too confusing to start here, I’d disagree. The concept of a bunch of princesses from made-up countries, at boarding school in the Scottish Highlands, was easy enough to figure out.
The fact we meet our heroine, Mercedes (forgotten all her titles) on her way home from school should be an immediate indicator as to her maturity. She’s incredibly naïve and incredibly sheltered. I did really like that (at least at the start) she had all the airs and graces of royalty. They did disappear pretty fast, but at least at the beginning she didn’t just jump into regular life and immediately be competent at everything.
Quite a lot of this book reminded me of a Disney movie. It’s pretty, it has pretty characters, and there’s not really anything about it that resembles Regency Britain. It’s a fantasy of the early nineteenth century (as many books with Highlander heroes seem to be).
Additionally, don’t pay too close attention to the timeline, as our lead characters are married before they even know each other.
The anachronisms were many and spread from start to finish. It’s 1816, and characters are addressing each other by their first names – and right from the outset. The first night hero and heroine know each other (and the second and third and fourth nights, also) they share a bed because she has nightmares. Everyone speaks in very modern English with very modern concepts (for example, ‘personal space’ – a concept first described in 1966!) – and there’s such an overuse of gotten it became very distracting.
Also, for some strange reason, though English isn’t the heroine’s first language (we’re never told what it is, or anything else about the country she’s from), even when she is calling out in her sleep it’s always in English.
If you like old-school historical romance, with the young and naïve heroine, the big tough heroic man guarding her, fake nobility and lots of gallivanting about the British countryside, this is for you.
I wish I could say it was for me, but I suppose I need more of a feel of history in order to really like a book in this genre.
This one was slightly better than the previous one: Mercedes was a very girly princess, quite obedient, always respectful and polite. She had the potential to turn into a real bore. And surprise, circumstances force her to adapt brutally and to turn into someone better. I really liked the hero, as well, especially his behavior when finding himself disowned which was both very humane without turning childish or showing self-conceit.
Tracy is really good at taking premises that we have all read before and giving them her own twist. The slow progression of the romance between Daniel and Mercedes was cute and charming. I was really happy with Mercedes for adapting to the change in her circumstances. Going from a princess with privilege to someone on the run, her character was wonderfully developed.
While on her journey home to Alden from Scotland, her carriage is attacked. With her personal guard, maid, and even her cousin dead, she is the only survivor and is able to flee into the woods. Finally after some time, she reaches a inn, and tries to convey her situation to the locals, who has little sympathy and don't even believe her when she says she is a Princess. Then a handsome stranger defends her. Mercedes asks for his help as her bodyguard. Daniel, reaches out to this young woman who is obviously in fear of something and in need of a champion. Even though he thinks she is a bit addled in claiming she is a princess. However he feels that there is someone or something that has genuinely frightened her so he accompanies her to London. Through the journey back to London, he knows there is a real danger chasing them, but he fears he is in real danger of losing his heart to her. Her Highness and the Highlander is the second in the series by Tracy Anne Warren. I just have thoroughly enjoyed each and every one of this authors' works. So I knew when seeing this one on the shelf that I had to pick it up. When I read the Blurb on the back, I knew it would be one that I hoped was just as good as her other books. I mean a princess in need of a knight in shining armor, a sexy highlander in need of a good woman, and a exciting plot to keep its reader on their toes. Who wouldn't want to read it? I really enjoyed the characters...both Daniel and Mercedes I felt were perfect for each other. Mercedes I found to be very adaptive to each environment she is put in. For being a spoiled princess, there is a lot more to her than meets the eye. I really liked how she was willing to fight for Daniel and be with him no matter what. Daniel, is just so loveable, I couldn't help but admire him from the first few pages. There was something about the way he is with Mercedes that I just found delightful. The Plot was exciting from the first sentence. I was utterly captivated by the suspenseful scenes, the engaging characters, the sensual love scenes, and a brilliantly written story. LOVED IT AND COULDN'T PUT IT DOWN ONCE!!!!
Another cute story... Thank heavens for a strong man to help our heroine survive and thanks for the fealty they both showed to each other. Modern couples are so inclined it would seem. I totally appreciated the fact that this couple got married!! Woo Hoo!
I liked this one so much more than the first one. Emma just seemed like a spoiled child while Mercedes seemed much more mature. It made the romance so much better to read looking forward to reading the next one.
Mercedes and Daniel fall in love during an unplanned cross country journey together. Daniel comes to Mercedes’ rescue after her traveling companions are murdered. Although the story is not particularly unique, the author throws in the twist of Mercedes being a princess of a small European country. Of course nobody believes a stranded girl alone in Scotland could be a princess, so Mercedes experiences life as a common person for the first time.
I enjoyed the characters and a few story elements (like Robbie the dog), but for the most part I found the story slow and a little boring.
The only reason I am giving this book 3 stars is because I liked that the heroin was successful at escaping her kidnappers twice. Also the hero was good at protecting her.
This book is the second in the Princess Brides Series. Ms. Warren has once again done us justice in writing another wonderful book. What more could a reader want? You get a princess and her shining knight, A highlander needing a good woman to love and a storyline that keeps your interest from page one.
Mercedes' body guard, her maid and a cousin are all dead. She was on her way home from Scotland. They were attacked. She hides in the woods and now she is the only survivor. She finds her way to an inn, but the patrons and the locals don't believe she is a princess. They feel very little for her.
Then a handsome man, Daniel comes to her aide. Mercedes asks Daniel if he would be her bodyguard. Daniel can sense that she is afraid of something. He feels she is making up the part of claiming to be a princess. He does feel that someone or something has indeed scared her. He decides to go to London with her. On the journey back he feels there is a real danger headed right for them. Another danger he feels is falling in love and giving his heart to her. For being a spoiled princess she is a strong woman, willing to stand and fight for Daniel. The book had some wonderful characters, some sensual romance and some suspense. This book has it all. A little of everything that makes it so inviting and keeps your attention. You don't want to let go. You don't want it to end. So Grab a copy and enter the world of HER HIGHNESS and the HIGHLANDER. You won't be disappointed.
I would give this book 4 Crowns.
I was given a complimentary copy of HER HIGHNESS and the HIGHLANDER by Tracy Anne Warren from Manic Readers for my unbiased review.
This was a very cute story with a little kidnapping mystery on the side. The heroine was a very likeable, sweet, smart character. Not a spoiled, arrogant brat even though she is a princess. The hero was also likeable, kindhearted and protective. I felt that her emotions of fear during the night and wanting him to be near were sweet and believable. I felt the author also did a good job portraying the hero's feelings of sexual frustration each night while protecting her. I loved how she described them both turning their heads on the pillow towards each other to gaze into each others eyes, and then how it lead to kissy time. :) Another reviewer complained this was Disney with sex.... I'm not sure how that is bad, especially if you are up for a sweet, easy story :)
PS: This is book #2 in the series, and I did not feel lost at all even though I did not read book #1.
Another enjoyable historical romance. I love me a Scot so hearing his accents as I read was great. I enjoyed how Mercedes had to learn about herself so that she could adapt to the major change in her circumstances. Daniel was a heartwarming hero who couldn’t deny his desire and instincts to protect her. I almost wish we could have seen him at his home to see his interactions with the staff and townspeople and how much he cares for the them. I enjoyed the mystery, I just thought there could have been a little bit more of it. I almost felt like the climax of the story came and went very quickly. Very excited to read the last book in the series, even though I have to wait a year for it.
I enjoyed the book and the action that was in the book. I gave it four stars because I felt like their was something missing from the book. The only thing is I am not sure what it is that is missing. I think the characters meet the expectations of the book and that they were the perfect characters for this story line and look forward to other books. I also believe that anyone should try the book out and I would recommend it for anyone to try it and the reason I say that is that every person has to different opinions. I did truly enjoy it and found it hard to put down at times.
(Potential spoilers) I really enjoyed this novel. The characters were likable and engaging, the dialogue felt very natural and the plot / behavior of the players was believable. Mercedes' hesitation to acknowledge Daniel as her husband, and then her immediate regret of her lack of action rang very true. I liked that Mercedes was a strong lead, who is able to rescue herself and is a partner with Daniel, not his subordinate.
This was my first Tracy Ann Warren, but it will not be my last.
I really loved this book. It had a great mix the reluctant hero who can't help his attraction to the young princess. I enjoyed how the tale was woven into an interesting fairytale. There were a few things that bothered me. The antagonist wasn't properly built up, I thought. However, despite this I found the story well written and engaging. I loved the details that always seem to be a very important part of Tracy Anne Warren's books.
It's weird, because Mercedes and Daniel were perfectly nice characters and they were pretty cute together but that's all there was. Also, I found their relationship quite unrealistic on an emotional level, and the plot as well? I know HRs are meant to be unrealistic but this one was just.... particularly strange, plot wise.
I enjoyed this book. Reminded me of an old film my mother made me watch and now as I type it I forger the films name. Anyway this is a cute story of a princess becoming an ordinary person but still on the run from danger.
Should have known this would be alternate historical romance with a heroine named Mercedes and a fake country. Why bother writing historical romances when it's so obvious their is no attention to history. I call this alternate reality historical romance cause it's pure historical fantasy.
Please, please, please be better than your predecessor! I love Highland series if they are written right, so I'm at least hoping this turns out decent. Hmph.
