Quick review:
Book:
The Last Knight.
Series: Pendragon.
Main Characters: Cara, and Lancelot. Let's not forget Arthur.
important Side Characters; Wyn, and Percy.
Genre: Fantasy romance. It also has Time travel, and a Psychological factor that made the plot a lot more interesting.
Recommend it? Yes!! Give this novel a chance because it's worth it
HEA?
Will I read the second book? If you've read the ending, you would know the answer, and that is a YES!

The Plot: Cara has nightmares that always come true, and she is afraid of those dreams. She's scared of herself, and doesn't want to become like her psychotic mother who's locked in rehab. Her dad is even more worried about her. She lost all her friends, and her ex-boyfriend hates her. Until Lance comes, and she notices how there seems to be something different about him. She meets Wyn and Percy, and they too seems different.

What I liked:

☛ I really enjoyed the plot for this story. If you are interested in psychology like I am, you would really enjoy this. The idea of this book was totally psychological, and then it slowly shifted to fantasy/Paranormal. It was very interesting. So, which mental illness did Cara have if this wasn't a paranormal/fantasy? Well, MPD, or DID. I loved the concept of this, and I have to admit I found it very intriguing because Nicola twisted it into something else entirely. If you don't know what DID is, well it is the famous mental illness that many psychologists still don't believe in. It's when a person has more than one personality or identity. However, Cara is NOT mentally ill.

☛ The second point is the fact that King Arthur is supposed to be her other personality.

☛ I loved the Time Traveling part. A lot!! If the book was about the time traveling, I would've rated this a 5 stars. I liked how the past connected with the future, and how everything played out.

☛ I liked all the characters, and I didn't feel annoyed by any of them. Except her ex. I loved all the connection the characters had, and I have to say, I enjoyed reading this a lot. Especially the last 50% of the book.

☛ I also liked how Nicola introduced the paranormal creatures to readers. The fantasy aspect of this novel was enjoyable.

 photo image.jpeg

What I didn't like:

☛After about 20% through this book, the pace slowed down a bit. Then, it picked up at about 50%, and it was enjoyable from there. This is my opinion, but it might not be yours since I was in a reading slump, and I pushed myself to go on. However, this was a great read.

I have honestly finished this book since last week, but I knew I had to post a review for it. I would recommend this to everyone, and I hope you enjoy!

I had such a great time reading this creative, adventurous retelling of King Arthur! The book opens up with the heroine, Cara, visiting her mom in a mental hospital. Cara seems quite depressed with the fact that her mom is ill. She also lives in fear that she will grow to be just like her mom because she experiences prophetic dreams and can't decide if she's crazy or not.

Cara meets a new boy at school named Lance and even though people have told him that she's crazy, he still shows great interest in her. She feels a strong attraction to Lance and just wants to be a normal girl. After some pretty horrific nightmares, her dad convinces her to see a therapist. The therapist uses hypnosis and cracks the barriers around Cara's mind. This sets off a chain of events that puts a ticking clock on Cara's survival.

Lance and his two brothers, Wyn and Percy, convince Cara to trust them and she takes off with them on a journey through England and Wales where she learns that magic is real and her destiny is intertwined
with the three knights that came a long way to assist her.

description

The time travel portion of this book was wonderful! The writing was very descriptive, making me feel as if I were there. The storyline between Lance and Cara was creative and intriguing. Wyn and Percy were good supporting characters, with both of their personalities shining through. The story was very fast paced - I never felt bored.

Great setting, great plot, great characters, great writing style.

I did feel like the last thirty pages or so ended very abruptly. I guess that's my only complaint. I did like the VERY end and what it leaves open for the second book. Very, very intriguing!

So.. how long until the next book

For Carowyn "Cara" Page, her dreams have a habit of coming true for as long as she could remember. Cara just wants her mother to remember who she is for once but alas that's not meant to be. Cara helps a handsome stranger to avoid getting detention. Lance Filwer is a new student that has many secrets. Cara sees Lance for who he is and trusts him like no other person she knows. Cara agrees to see a therapist for having woken up screaming. The therapist unknowningly unblocks Cara's memories. Cara is in danger the only person to help her is Lance. Everything spirals out of control magic is rule and so is Camelot. Cara has a hard time reconciling the past from the present. Will Cara be who she needs to be? Will magic be restored or forgotten? Your answers await you in The Last Knight.

This new to me author presented an Arthurian tale that I haven't seen in other books before. The characters are real, honest, unique, compelling, flawed, and down to earth. The story isn't typical of Arthurian tales which is refreshing in many aspects. I'll definitely read more of this author's work in the future.

The Last Knight was a fun, fast-paced read. It had a great blend of action, time-travel, fantasy, and romance with believable and lovable characters. I loved the modern day King Arthur spin, and what girl has never dreamed of a romance with Sir Lancelot? This is one of those pool-side reads perfect for the summer, and I totally recommend anyone looking for a modern day fantasy get-a-way to pick it up.

Perhaps my favorite part of Nicola S. Dorrington's story was her careful writing. Too often plot driven novels, such as this one, neglect to pay attention to details, yet Dorrington has obviously studied the craft of writing. She doesn't skip from scene to scene just for the sake of getting to the next action packed moment. She actually uses transitions, with the right mix of character development, dialogue, setting, pace, and adventure.

I may just have to pick up the second novel if it's available!

Met Nicola and purchased her book at a book signing at Southern Cross. This is an easy young adult read. She braided a girl's desire to find her Knight in shining armor with time travel and acceptance of being an odd duck in the eyes of others.

( I received this book free from the Author In exchange for my honest review )

After reading a slew of books that made my head hurt, this was refreshing. I was captured from the first chapter, no the first sentence. This story drew me in and immersed me into a beautiful, freighting world of legends, knights, honor, and kings. Before I knew it, the tale was over; and I was left with a bitter-sweet ending that left me wanting more.

Cara, to be honest, I wasn’t keen on her in the beginning, mostly beuase of how she was with her mother, and though I understood, it didn’t sit well with me. It wasn’t until she left, fell and cried that I felt for her, and all misgiving I had vanished with her tears. She was broken, but strong, she tried to keep her head up while keeping it low to avoid unnecessary conflict. It was heart-breaking to watch the bullying, even if it was only in the first few chapters.

I liked that this story didn’t dwell too much on school life; it got to the point fast, without making the story feel rushed. Sure it has a typical YA opening, with the new guy knowing more than the MC, but he wasn’t a jerk about it. He wasn’t concerned about others, he was there for one reason, Cara. Far too many times this same ideal is written, but the so-call hero gets distracted with mundane school problems that take away from the flow and plot of the story. He’s a knight of old, honor bounded to do his duty. Nothing about that annoyed me, I have always been intrigued with old mannerism and how over the years it’s been twisted and form into the lack of it we see today. Again, this was refreshing.

The plot and flow of the story was smooth and stayed on point. There was a mission, a task that needed to be done, and stopping wasn’t an option. Though, there was some transition issues in the beginning. One that stands out and confused me, was a scene were Cara was chatting with Lance. When the convo was over, it suddenly cuts of to her waking up in bed. I had to go back and read the scene before to make sure it wasn’t a dream she had. That sudden change, in my opinion should have been either a new chapter, or a break of some kind, that should have been added to separate that sudden change of scenery. Jump cuts do not work in the written word.

Getting back to Cara and Lance, I didn’t find that their attraction fell into the dreaded insta-love category as it did into a more deeper affection that was centuries in the making. Cara had feelings for him, which grew over the book. For most of it she as fighting what she thought was emotions not of her own. But there is a twist, that makes you understands that this love, is much more than a teenage romance. I had a hard time not falling more them, and placing them on my favourite couple list. Their story is bitter-sweet, and I don’t thing they’re going to have it easy. Plus, there was no stupid love-tringle.

I’m not going to go into detail on Lance or his brothers because it will spoil the story. But, I loved them. They had minds their own, and for once didn’t all fall for the one female lead. They had a job, a mission, to protect, to defend, to follow, and they did just that. Without the useless drama, just to make drama.

A real highlight for me was that Cara didn’t forget she had parents, good parents, and a father that was worried sick about her. She made it a point to make contact, even if he wouldn’t understand. It was heartbreaking to read, but I felt a twinge of happiness that she understood the pain and greaf she had placed and caused.

The ending was a bittersweet cliff-hanger. Again I can’t, no I won’t, get into it, because it will spoil everything. Reading this book yourself is the only way to know. So yes, I highly recommend this tales of old, brought into the modern world. It’s a fast past adventure that brings us in the old legends of when there was magic, knights, and kingdoms to save. This is the start a new legend, a new hero, and a love that has transcended time.

I would like to thank Nicola S. Dorrington for giving me the opportunity to dive into this world of hero’s that will never truly die

Happy Reading

*I'd like to thank the author for providing me with a copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.*

As a reader always on the lookout for something different, I knew I had to try this story. With the mythology of King Arthur as the base of it's plot, it looked interesting and I wondered how the author wove it into her modern-day tale. What I got was a story about fate, love, and mythology all in one.

The main character Cara was a sympathetic one. When we first met her, she was visiting her mother in a mental institution, and right away I was interested in her. This was especially true when her prophetic dreams came up in the story. I found that I liked her, because she was an honest person and loyal to those who meant a lot to her. However, sometimes I thought she was a bit slow to catch onto things, but then I suppose the circumstances Cara found herself in were quite unbelievable. Either way, I found Cara to be a good protagonist, and she was interesting to read about.

The male lead in this story was Lance. I liked him because he was strong and always did his duty. He also respected Cara, and protected her. However, he got a bit too overprotective, especially near the end. That issue was taken care of though, and i admired the way in which it was addressed. I always wanted to find out more about Lance, and by the end of the story, I was definitely routing for him and Cara. I believe they make a good couple, and that Cara brings Lance something other than duty in his life.

There were some interesting side characters in this book, as well. I really liked Wyn, since he was so sensible. He knew what certain people would do, and tried to stop them from making mistakes. At first, I thought he was a little odd, but as the end of the story drew nearer, I definitely liked him a lot more. I thought Percy was a nice character, in terms of a supportive friend and comic relief. There were a few other characters, but Percy and Wyn were the ones we got to really know the best, so maybe the next book will give more insight to other characters.

The plot of this story was interesting, though I figured a lot of the mystery out. Cara had prophetic dreams, and she had to figure out the mystery behind Lance, where her dreams came from, whether or not she was crazy, and what her true destiny was. What I liked about this story was that it was set in England and Wales, and it definitely made things more interesting, as America is a more common setting in books. The story was evenly paced, and different from your usual Young Adult paranormal tale, as there were no vampires, boarding schools, or love triangles. Not that I find those things bad, but I think this was refreshing and different. The only downfall of this novel plot-wise was the ending. The story was resolved, but there was one thing left hanging, and I don't quite know how the author will manage to solve that one thing and make everything in the next book interesting.

Overall, I liked this story. As I said, it was pretty easy to guess at most of the things that happened, however this book was a quick and enjoyable read. There was adventure which I really liked, some action, and an interesting love story. The author did a good job at putting all three of these elements into one book, and I read it in a matter of hours. I definitely recommend this for any reader seeking a young adult novel with adventure, a setting outside of America, and that also has a lot of mythology in it.

I was given a free PDF copy by the author from the group All About YA in exchange for an honest review.

For as long as she can remember, everyone that 17 year old Cara Page has come across thinks that she's crazy. At night when she sleeps, her dreams tell her the future and then come true.

After running into a mysterious guy at the hospital, where her mother has been for the past few years, strange things start to happen. Everything she thought myth and legend becomes real and the truth and Cara find herself smack bang in the middle.

With mythical wraiths following her and the evil Morgana Le Fay watching her every move, Cara isn't sure if she'll make it out alive. But with the help of Lance, Percy and Wyn nothing's impossible.
Will she be able to fulfill her destiny?

*WARNING, THERE WILL BE SPOILERS FROM THIS POINT FORWARD*

Let me start off by saying that, I haven't read a lot of books about the era of King Arthur nor have I learn't anything about the era. So, all I know is basically what I've heard about it.

With that in mind, I loved the book a lot. Words can't express how much!

Cara, our protagonist is bad ass. I felt so sorry for her and her mum because she and her father thought that Cara was going down the same path as her mother and you could feel the heartbreak is caused both her and her father. I especially admired how she didn't let the boys be her heroes and let them do the job for her, instead she showed courage, power and took matters into her own hands.

Lance, he showed interest in Cara since day one when he saw her in the hospital and then stayed by her side, even though when he started attending her school people tried to turn him away from her, he stayed. Although, we know exactly why he stayed.

Wyn and Percy, I loved them to bits! They were serious but knew when to be funny and playful at the right times and ugh, I just can't express how much I love them.

I love how Cara is the last Pendragon and I love how Arthur was a voice in the back of her mind. I love how he always offered Cara advice and tried to help her in the best way possible.

The romance wasn't rushed either, it was paced nicely and flowed well with the story. Although, at first, I loved the relationship between Cara and Lance and I love how they met back when King Arthur wasn't just a voice in her head. But, I dunno what happened after Cara and Lance had their 'little scene' I fel kind of uncomfortable and weird and as if the relationship was strained. I really hope that it doesn't feel like that in the next book.

Overall, I really liked the whole concept of the book and I can't wait to see what happens next!
I would recommend this for anyone who has interest in the era of King Arthur but with a modern twist and just for someone who's looking for a kickass adventure novel.

Full reviews in Daydreaming Books

**I received a digital copy of this book from the author via Goodreads in exchange for an honest review.**

This book was seriously superb! I didn’t expect much before starting this book but it blew my mind. The author takes the Aurthurian tales and twists it into something else. I’m sooo glad I signed up for this one.

The story revolves around a girl named Cara. She dreams of something and that ends up as true, always and there’s always this voice in her head. She knows she’s not crazy but her whole school considers her so because she once made a mistake of telling her ex-boyfriend the truth about her dreams. Until the one guy comes, named Lance who accepts her for what she is and makes her feel normal. But everything turns upside down when she has to leave her home and run away with Lance because she is not safe there or anywhere else until she finds out the whole truth about herself and accepts it.

The plot was uniquely woven. Cara finds out she is the last bloodline of the Pendragon dynasty and the descendent of King Aurthur. She has to find the Excalibur, the sword of King Aurthur because she’ll be only one able to wield it because of her bloodline and she has to defeat Morgana who’s son killed Aurthur and now she wants to rule the whole world.

I loved the characters. Cara was simply awsome. She handled everything maturely. At first she had a hard time believing the truth but eventually she came to her senses. She was accompanied by Lance, Wyn and Percy who were actually knights brought back to life by Merlin. Got any idea guys? Lance was actually Sir Lancelot, Wyn was Sir Gwain and Percy was Sir Percival. This was really an interesting twist to the Aurthurian tales. And the voice that Cara kept hearing in her head was King Aurthur’s voice.

Lance was really, really good. I loved him. Lance and Cara already had a previous connection but they finally reconciled when she remembered everything. I loved their romance, it was definitely sweet. And I loved Wyn and Percy, they were humorous characters and sort of brotherly types. I was really relieved to find no love triangle, those tend to get on my nerves.

The writing was pretty good and simple to understand. Not for once did I feel bored. The plot was exiting all along. I finished this in one sitting, I couldn’t sleep until I finished thus book, it was pretty addicting,

Overall, this was an awsome book, it kept me on the egde from the beginning, I was practically breathless because I wanted to know what happened next, and it did not dissapoint for once. The ending was sort of a cliffhanger and I can’t wait to read the next installment in this series. I think I’m going to check out all her works.

Recommend it?

Most definitely yes!

The Last Knight (Pendragon, #1) by Nicola S. Dorrington

DISCLAIMER: I was given a copy of this book by the author (via Goodreads/Shut Up and Read/Read It and Reap) in exchange for an honest, unbiased review.

ADVISORY: Mild sexuality and violence.

SYNOPSIS / SPOILER ALERT:

Caronwyn (Cara) Page is a 17-year old girl living under some difficult circumstances. Her mother has been institutionalized for the past five years with a mental illness that is not responding to treatment. And Cara herself has been having dreams for the past three years. Sounds normal, but unfortunately, some of them have been coming true, so Cara is starting to doubt her own sanity, especially since dreams were the precursor to her mom’s mental illness.

Her ex-boyfriend and former friends don’t make life easier with their constant torment. But things begin to look up with the new boy at school (Lance) starts paying attention to her, and sticking up for her when she is bullied by her ex. But when she accidentally touches him, she sees him in a different way, and it confuses her.

And her dreams are becoming more real – plus she’s starting to hear voices. She’s scared, and a visit to a hypnotherapist unwittingly opens some unexpected doors to the source of her dreams. Turns out she is the descendant of King Arthur, and is key to fighting the evil that Morgana Le Fay intends to unleash upon her world, as well as the magical world of Avalon. But she needs help from both worlds – including Lance and his “brothers” (who are actually Knights of the Round Table), Merlin, the Fair Folk, and even King Arthur and Excalibur.

But Morgana Le Fay has plans to reclaim Albion for herself, and sends Wraiths and other magical beings against them. Cara and Lance need to reconcile their feelings for one another, as well as the consequences of their actions – both in the past and right now – in order to stand any chance at a future.

COMMENTS:

It was fairly well written YA fiction, with an interesting approach to the Arthurian legend. I look forward to reading the next books in the series.

NITPICKY GRAMMAR-TYPE STUFF (meant in a helpful way):

There were some grammatical errors. (Not a horrible amount, but ones that would not be found using spell-check.) Some may have been due to difference in usage (British vs. American). Unfortunately, I couldn’t properly mark the errors on my copy, but here are a few: slopping (should be sloping), Merlin’s name seemed to change a few times: first Emrys Myrddin, then Myrddin Emrys.

How It Made Me Feel:
I received this ePub for free from All About YA and the author, on Gooreads in exchange for an honest review.

Are you ready to take off on an adventure spanning the medieval times of King Arthur and the current times of Great Britain and Wales complete with supernatural creatures and wizards? This book is a great adaptation of a time told story. It's a new take on the King Arthur story complete with some of your favorite characters in a completely different light. I loved the different approach this novel took. I wasn't even aware until I read a little further into the story, that it was even related to King Arthur's court!

The storyline is full of action, adventure, magic, time travel, and even some romance! Who can say no to that! I loved the current take on some of the well known characters. It gave me a different insight to the King Arthur story that I rather enjoyed. The book was easy to read and definitely kept my attention until the very end. It was high action and full of witty commentary from the characters that were easy to relate to and very believable. I can easily see myself reading more from this author!

UGH! And don't even get me started on Lance! Yeah. I can admit that I have a fictional boy crush. The dark curly hair and the blue eyes, his personality and want to protect Cara. I fell. I fell hard. Haha! But seriously. I hope there is a sequel in the works!!

What I Thought Worked:
I love it when books that take place in Great Britain/United Kingdom, use the British spelling in the books. Granted, our author is an English ex-pat, but I love seeing the words and the different lingo they use in their everyday conversation. It's different for me and I appreciate it.

What I Thought Didn't Work:
I'm going to be selfish here and say that I want a sequel. Haha! I didn't want the book to end. Which is cliche, I know. But that doesn't change the fact that it was way too short! I just wanted to keep reading and keep reading.

Rating

5/5

Why It Got That Rating:
This is a book I want to buy a physical copy of and put it on my bookshelf forever. I want to be able to visit this world whenever I want and rereading this book is the perfect way to do so!

Who Would I Recommend To:
I would recommend to anyone who loves King Arthur stories, young adult romance, characters who are easy to relate to, or someone who is looking for a book with some time travel!

So, let me start with saying that this review will probably contain some spoilers, so please read with this in mind. With out further adieu, Let's begin.

I bought this book because I love anything Arthurian and Knight related. It was a great twist on an old tale. It reminded me a lot of what Disney had tried to do with Avalon High only better. I don't know that it really is Five stars, but needed more than four stars, so I'm okay with five. I loved the story. I loved the way that the author incorporated the Legend but in a whole new twist. I love the way this author describes the scenery. I felt like I was riding with Cara and the knights trying to defeat evil. The only thing that I wished could have been clearer would be the description of Cara because I felt that the picture on the cover and the description in the book contradicted each other. The booked moved at a good pace, not too slow, not too fast. The characters were fairly well developed and not confusing at all. I just wanted more. Which is where my first negative comment comes in and its not even that big of a complaint. I wanted more, especially in the final battle. There was this build up to this fight with Morgana and then it was just over. I also wanted more in the time travel. I wanted to see the training with Lancelot. I wanted to see the romance blossom between Lancelot and Cara. He waited over a thousand years for her. I wanted to see the build up as to why. My only other complaint was the grammar in the novel. I understand that the author is originally from London, so I chalk it up to American grammar vs European grammar. This is not a bad thing, it is just something that takes a little getting use to. It took me about 50 pages to start just reading over some of the odder sentence structures. There were a few typos, though I'not completely sure all of them were typos (again American Vs European Grammar). Also, there were a few places that need some comma breakage. However, none of this really took away too much from the story. I have just started the second book, so I will leave a review with that book once I am finished. Overall, one of the better YA books I have read. I could see this making a good movie series if done right.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.

Nothing in Cara Page's life is normal, not her dreams, not her mom and not how she is being treated in her school. She used to have friends, a boyfriend named Anderson but she tried to tell him once that she dreams of the future and when she warned him that she saw his sister died in her dreams and it all came true, he blamed her for what happened and outed her on campus as a freak. Everyone believed him.

She feels she is on the verge of really losing her mind especially with what is happening to her mom and what it's doing to her dad. But when she met Lance, things changed. He is the exact opposite of Anderson. Having some sort of mystery about him and two brothers who turns out to be his friends or shall I say fellow Knights Wyn and Percy. While a bad boy character is someone I easily get attracted to, in this story it is truly Lance who captured my heart.

He is affectionate and understanding with Cara, a quality that is suited for her after everything she has been through. And just when I thought things are going pretty well, Cara will soon be introduced to different characters from the past who will help her in saving the future.

She will face magical creatures that are supposed to be the product of a colorful imagination but this time they are true and they are coming for her.
She will also meet Merlin and Arthur who plays an important role in her life.

This book is really special to me because it's the first fantasy book I read and I have to admit I really really liked it. I only know a handful of King Arthur legends so I cannot say I am an expert about it. But what I read here is something special because it included the past and the present time and a heroine is born. It is a charged up adventure that you won't get to put it down, not even a second.

I also always adore stories where there is deep friendship within the characters so Lance and his two friends Wyn and Percy are on my top list of 'Book Camaraderie'. And yes the romance is also way up there. Lance and Cara may have an unusual relationship but I admire how much risk they are willing to take to be together.

I can't wait to read the next book in the series!!

(I received a free copy of this book in exchange for a review).

(This review may contain spoilers).

Considering that I've had some different experiences with young adult books, although I really wanted to read this, I was also a bit hesitant, due to many falling into the same category.

First of all... there wasn't a love triangle involving Cara. Well, not exactly... but it was nice not to see a girl torn between two guys. Though I haven't read the synopsis for the sequel, so for all I know, there could be a love triangle there.

I blame being absolutely shattered yesterday for the fact that I missed some very obvious clues about the identities of some of the characters. There was nothing wrong with the writing... it was very much more because I was missing all sorts of things. I liked Lance, Percy and Wyn as characters. It was interesting to see that Cara could see things when she touched one of the boys... though I didn't actually clock the reason for some of those memories until much later and the explanation was one that I thought really worked well. The events towards the end of the book tied in really well to those at the start.

I liked Cara as a character and I could empathise with her really well. I had a lot of sympathy for her, due to her being treated as an outcast. It was nice to see her become friendly with Lance when he started treating her like a person and not a freak.

I found myself drawn really easily into the writing and I liked the fact that Cara didn't just believe everything off the bat. Her exchanges with the voice inside her mind were really sweet and I liked the opportunity to get to know more of this version of the characters and the legend. I was also really happy to see there wasn't love at first sight, even if there was some form of attraction.

This book did end on something of a cliffhanger, but it was good to see that a lot of the plot was resolved. I would be interested in reading the sequel to this book in the future... probably enough to purchase it when I have the money to do so.

The Last Knight was my personal favorite of Dorrington’s books. While I’ve really enjoyed following her vampire/werewolf series, this book just had a little something special. It had a feel that pulled me in, made me want to read more, and, yeah, when the book was done, I was kind of upset that the next one had not been released yet!
I love the way that this book draws from the Arthurian legends. There’s knights, swords, time travel, and King Arthur himself. I have to say I expected a certain thing-- a certain way for the book to unfold. I mean, we’ve all read books like this before, right? Only Dorrington’s done it in her own way, bringing fresh ideas to the table. Surprise, surprise, it’s not the same old King Arthur story.
The things I loved most about this book:
The romance. *Sigh* I really want to say more about this, but I realize I don’t want to spoil anything, either, so… the romance. Loved it. Wanted to marry it.
Arthur! Again, there are spoilers. But I loved Arthur-- who/where/how he was done.
The time travel bit. And I know this is kind of a spoiler, but most of this Arthurian story takes place in present day, which is also one of the things I loved about it.
Cara and her mom. I really felt it. I thought Cara was believable. She loved her mom and she was in pain over her mom’s condition. This is what made Cara’s character real for me.
This is clearly a YA story, but I completely enjoyed reading it, even though I’m not really the target audience. When I read this book, I just knew that it was the kind of thing I would have obsessed over as a teen. I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a romance, knights, and adventure, but especially to teens. I can’t wait to read the next book. And the next, and the next, and the next!

I have some mixed feelings about this. A few months back I got this one for free on Kindle and I started reading but I couldn't get into it- I dropped it 2 pages into the 2nd chapter.

Now fast forward a few months later, and I had nothing to read, all the other freebies were duds, and The Last Knight was free again on Kindle, so I decided to give it a second chance, I mean what's the worst that could happen? I could drop it again and keep on searching for other books, etc. And so I forced myself to get past the dreaded 2nd chapter.

At first, when I started the first few chapters, I was cringe reading. It started as the typical "girl is a loner/freak and the new hot guy in only interested in her" cliche that had me rolling my eyes and cringing as I read it. The premise has been overused and I really wanted to stop reading, but after Cara was told a few things and there were secrets that couldn't be revealed about and to her, I stayed around to see what the big deal was. Of course, all during this, even after it was all revealed by Merlin about who she was and her destiny she was fated to do, I admit I wasn't really invested in the story. I felt like I could put it down, live my life, and then come back after days or weeks and eventually finish it. In other words, I was in no rush to finish reading it as I do with other books.

But, it didn't really start to get interesting, imo, until she was sent back in time and she got to meet everyone back when they were alive a thousand years ago and when she came back the action started to pick up. After that, it caught my attention and I didn't realize I was nearing the end of the story until I realized that Lance was trapped back in Avalon and hadn't come back. And then it ended, leaving it open-ended and with just enough questions to keep the reader intrigued to read the next books.

** I received this eBook for free in exchange for an honest review. This did not influence my review at all. **

Are you ready to take off on an adventure spanning the medieval times of King Arthur and the current times of Great Britain and Wales complete with supernatural creatures and wizards? Than this fantastic adaptation of the time true story is for you. It's a brand new take on the story of King Arthur, complete with some of your favorite characters in a completely different light. I loved the different approach this novel took.

I've always enjoyed reading books that are set in The United Kingdom and I appreciated being able to read lingo and slang and conversations that would be heard if I stepped off a plane in London Heathrow.

The storyline is full of adventure, traveling through time, action, magic, and even some romance! I know I couldn't refuse. The author gave me a different insight to the King Arthur story that I rather enjoyed and seeing the characters in present time was a great surprise. The book was an easy read and my attention was piqued until the very last word. It was full of witty commentary from the characters that were easy to relate to and very believable. I can easily see myself reading more from this author!

Ok. Book boyfriend time. I will readily admit that I have a fictional boy crush. His personality, curly hair, blue eyes, and want to protect Cara? Who else could I be talking of than Lance?? I fell and boy, did I fall hard! Here's to me keeping my fingers crossed that there's a sequel!

Selfish time! I wish the book hadn't ended. I wanted just one more chapter once I finished the book. I'm definitely going to keep an eye on this author.

I gave this book 5 magical stars!

I just finished Nicola Dorrington’s young adult adventure, The Last Knight, and wanted to pass on how much I enjoyed it.

In this fresh take on the Arthur/Guinevere/Lancelot love triangle, modern-day Cara must prove she’s not crazy while staying alive long enough to defeat a supernatural Morgana Le Fay, who’s trying to turn the Otherworld loose on our world and destroy mankind.

The problem is, Cara’s an awkward 17-year-old who’s more concerned about the new boy in school. She also has to sort out whether he and his friends are really three of Arthur’s knights somehow thrust into her 21st-Century world.

Cara’s troubles start with her recurring dreams – dreams that have an unsettling habit of coming true, leaving her to wonder if her dreams are truly predictive, or if she’s just plain crazy.

Then a stranger comes to town and all hell breaks loose, literally.

The novel is plotted well, with romantic and dynamic tension building throughout as Cara struggles with her feelings for Lance while searching for the means – and the courage – to fight Morgana.

As with any knightly tale, the Chivalric Code is central, and Cara evinces that code in full measure, putting duty before self as unerringly as any of her knightly companions.

Fans of Susan Cooper’s The Dark is Rising series and Nancy Bond’s A String in the Harp will love this YA blend of romance, Arthuriana and the like-you’re-there descriptions of the British countryside.

The Last Knight left me with plenty to think about, and eager to read the next book in the series.

I received this novel in exchange for an honest review.

Imagine being a 17-year-old outcast because your ex-boyfriend told the entire school that your mother is in a mental institution, which she is, and that you're as crazy as she is, which you may be. Cara Page has prophetic dreams and those dreams become richer and more terrifying after she meets 18-year-old Lance Filwer. Lance convinces Cara to go along with him and his two brothers, Wyn and Percy, on a trip that will change everything. On the trip, Cara hears a man's voice in her head who turns out to be King Arthur Pendragon, and Cara is his descendant. Arthur tells her: "Cara, you know all this is true. It's in your blood, in your heart. Stop using your head. There is more to this world than you can see or touch. The old magic faded. People forgot. History became myth and legend, and I was forgotten, known only through fantasy and fiction," (87). It takes time but Cara ultimately accepts the fact that she is the last descendant of a line of kings; she is a Pendragon.

I don't read a lot of YA fantasy but I enjoyed The Last Knight, especially the budding romance between Cara and Lance. After Cara tells Lance that Arthur forgives him for his past betrayal, Lance says, "Perhaps, if I can succeed with you where I failed him, I'll be able to forgive myself." And Cara realizes 'a little chink appeared in the armour he held so tightly around himself," (74).

I would recommend this novel to anyone who enjoys the young adult fantasy/mythology genre.

Unbeknownst to her, Cara Page is a modern day descendent of the legendary King Arthur and Queen Guinevere. Her mother is in a mental facility and her father is barely coping with the situation especially when it looks like Cara is showing signs of the same affliction. Cara has been experiencing extremely vivid dreams – nightmares! – that seem to foretell future events. When she shares this with a boyfriend, she finds herself ostracized and labeled crazy! She’s starting to believe the rumors herself when a gorgeous new guy appears at school. Lance seems to really understand her problem and know what is happening to her. Along with his friends, Wyn and Percy, Lance arrives at Cara’s home late one night and convinces her that she’s in mortal danger and must leave with them at once. He takes her to the one person that can explain it all … Merlin.

Thus begins this new, young adult series building on the Arthurian mythos by Nicola S. Dorrington. The present day setting, the youth of the characters that we normally envision as grown adults, the suspense, and the romance all blend together for an immensely enjoyable reading experience. The resolution to the story also leaves the reader ready for the next installment in the series. I really enjoyed this book and I think others that have a penchant for tales of Camelot and young adult paranormal fiction will, too.

Thank you, Goodreads, for introducing me to a new favorite.

I received a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

This is an interesting update on Arthurian mythology, and one I haven't seen before. There's a lot of good points to this book: it's an easy read, the main characters are interesting, and the story keeps interest throughout. I'm also very impressed with the usage of the Arthurian mythology. Sometimes it seems like modern updates of mythology can be very basic, especially when it comes to Arthurian, but that is not the case here.

The execution runs into trouble in some places. Cara's mother suffers from "mental illness" as a convenient plot device, which is a little bit problematic in its representation. Percy and Wyn are a little interchangeable, especially at the beginning. (Nearer the end, Wyn is given more of a personality.) Cara will make a point, then make the same point the next page over. There is a plot device of a dragon that never actually makes an appearance. And there are several typos and punctuation errors throughout, as well as a few grammatical errors where I had to stop reading to figure out what was actually being said.

However, I did enjoy the book a great deal. Again, the mythology usage is top notch, and I enjoyed the romance between Cara and Lance. There is another book in the series, which I think could be worth checking out, based on this one.

I loved how this book took a different turn from your usual fairies/werewolves/vampires urban fantasy novel, heading into the ancient mythology of Medieval England.
Cara is a descendant of Arthur Pendragon, the original King Arthur. On her journey to defeat Morgana Le Fay, she fights bravely against the evil Wraiths.
The whole plot was action-packed, something I love in books. Every time I settled into thinking the story was heading for peaceful waters, WHAM! Something crazy happens.
To add to the saving-the-world drama, there's Lance, the reincarnated Sir Lancelot. Hey, that guy you like? Forget a two-hundred-year-old vampire, he's a medieval knight in an eighteen-year-old body who fought alongside and then betrayed King Arthur, your ancestor. (And, on a side note, that is much better than vampires.)
The way Nicola Dorrington resolved Cara's angst on that was magnificent. The plot twisted in the scintillating, complex way of a time-travel movie. The setting of Ancient Britain in the later part of the book was very well-written, a part which I particularly loved.

Who would I recommend this to?
Anyone who loves fantasy books which explore ancient mythology and looking for a fast-moving, exciting plot.

The story itself has a decently laid out plot with moderately interesting characters, but the whole thing is ruined by the excessive grammar mistakes.
What drew me in? The idea of an insane mother and the effect it had on her teenage daughter was a perfect hook. But then you bring in the love interest and it kind of felt forced. There are reasons for that, though, so it works. I liked it. I just can't give it more than three stars because the grammar was awful. Phrases like "He was stood" were everywhere. Homonym problems were laced throughout the entire book, and there was an excessive amount of missing or misplaced punctuation. In many places sentence structure was awkward and confusing. Despite all that, it certainly wasn't the worst I have ever seen.
With a good editor, this could be a decent read.

For my clean readers:
Language, but no f-bomb. Teenage rebellion in the form of running away. Violence is fairly mild, mostly pointed at mythical beings. Romance gets a little too descriptive in make out sessions, but is limited to that.

Magic! Dreams! Adventure! Merlin! Arthur and his knights!

‘The Last Knight’ begins a bit slowly but picks up when Cara meets Lance, Wyn, and Percy. Her strange dreams always seem to come true, and with her mother in a mental institution, her father brings her to a therapist when she can no longer sleep through the night. I enjoyed the dialog, the teasing and flirting, between the main characters, as well as homage to Arthur/Merlin legends. I found it refreshing that a romance developed slowly, rather than the all-too-common insta-love in YA novels.

The best part of this novel was the time travel portion; it was exciting and brought a new level of adventure and exploration to the tale. Cara’s character also matured for having taken this trip. The ending, however, was the least impressive part of the tale. The ending wasn’t so much a cliffhanger; it plainly many left things unresolved.
