2.5 stars. I am honestly glad this was a novella. This coming from me? ... It says a lot. Did I hate it? No. Did I love it? Resounding no. After reading the story, I can tell you that I still don't know anything meaningful about either of our protagonists aside from the bare basics. I certainly don't believe they know enough about each other to be in love. Let's talk for a second about pacing. Or in this case the distinct lack of it or of any graduated effect of what little bit of it was actually present. Cecilia loses her memory in a vaguely described incident. They decide lying and pretending is the way to go. She and Adam have few interactions. All very formal. He kisses her once. She regains her memory. Bam! "Make love to me". Yeah... Ok. Not to mention the ending! I legit glared at my Nook willing it to give me something that was just... more than what it was. The climax of the story came and went and my pulse, heart, emotions, hell I don't even think my lashes were moved. I think I need a break from historicals. I usually love them but lately they've been duds.

The Unforgettable Hero by Valerie Bowman is a 2016 St. Martin’s Press publication. I was provided a copy of this book by the publisher and Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.
This novella length historical romance moves at a super swift pace, and as a result the characters are nowhere close to being fleshed out properly. Still, for a quick lunch break read, I found it a nice distraction.
Cecilia, a wannabe novelist, desperate to sell her manuscript in order to afford medical care for her sister, becomes the victim of a hit and run carriage accident, resulting in a loss of memory. Adam Hunt rescues her and cares for her until her true identity can be discovered. But, all the while he can’t shake the idea that the young lady is in danger, nor can he deny his attraction to her. But, Adam is trying to find his place in the world, without help from his super successful brothers.
This story is very light, told with a touch of whimsy, and a dab of danger, with a surprising action packed happy ever after. This is not the author’s best work, and I wouldn’t expect it be, since the story is obviously meant to be short and sweet, and mostly just a nice diversion. To that end the story does what it set out to do and is enjoyable enough.

Valerie Bowman is a go to author for me. I love this author's mind and the tales she weaves are gripping and entertaining. THE UNFORGETTABLE HERO, a novella in the Playful Brides series is no exception to Ms. Bowman's lively repertoire of romance.
Miss Cecilia Harcourt has been her younger sister's caregiver since their parents untimely passing. They both are under the thumb of their unlikeable Aunt and Uncle, who have plans for Cecilia to marry their disagreeable son, Percy. An aspiring author, Cecilia plans to be an independant woman and take her sister out of their uncle's clutches by selling her novel. But Cecilia's plans go awry when she is almost run over by an out of control carriage. She is saved from her demise by handsome Lieutenant Adam Hunt, who quickly takes over and takes the unconcious woman to the safety of his family home.
Younger son, Adam Hunt has been away in service to the crown, but when his brother sees him discharged from the military and hopefully out of danger's way, Adam is disgruntled and eager to find his own way without his brother the duke's influence. Saving the mysterious woman in effect puts a stop to his plans, when the confused lady awakens and believes he is someone he is not. When the doctor tells him and his family to play along with her convoluted tales of her identity, the mystery thickens. What is he supposed to do with this woman who believes that Adam is her betrothed? Discovering "Lady Magnolia's" true identity is a very interesting path that should not be missed.

I thought this was a very sweet little novella. I haven't read the other books in this series, but had no problem at all following the story.
Cecelia is desperate - her parents have passed away. She and her younger sister (who is very ill) are at the mercy of her aunt and uncle. Her relatives have decided that she will marry their son and Cecelia is adamantly opposed to this idea. She has written a novel and hopes to have it published and to make enough money to support herself and her sister.
She meets with the publisher, who tells her that he can't risk publishing her novel. She is devastated and wondering if there is anyway she can write another book before she is forced to marry her cousin. As she is walking home she is stuck by a carriage and rescued by Adam (the youngest brother of the duke of Claringdon). As luck would have it - the accident happened right in front of his brother's house.
Adam takes Cecelia in his brothers home and then goes outside to pick up all the papers that she was carrying. Cecelia wakes up - but thinks she is the heroine (Lady Magnolia) of her novel and that Adam is the hero Peter, the duke of Loveridge, who is also her betrothed in the book.
The story takes a very humorous turn at this point - with everyone playing along with Cecelia's delusion per doctor's orders. Adam/Peter is very sweet and protective of Cecelia/Lady Magnolia aka Maggie. He is at a crossroads in his life and doesn't want to be dependent on his brother. He feels that he is the least important of the three brother and feels worthless. He doesn't know what he is going to do with the rest of his life and is embarrassed by the adoration that Cecelia bestows on him. He tries to find out who she really is by looking at the papers she was carrying. Except he can't find them. Turns out Lucy (the duchess of Claringdon and his sister in law) has taken the pages and is reading the story. This is when they realize that Cecelia is living out her story.
When Cecelia finally remembers who she is, she sneaks into Adam's room the night before she is going home and hopes to share a night of passion with him before she has to marry her cousin. Adam agrees to spend the night with her - up to a certain point. The next morning Adam sees Cecelia's sister Mary and misunderstands Cecelia's intentions for coming to him.
Three weeks go by before he comes to his senses and by then it is almost too late.
This was a well written, fast paced story with likable characters and a very sweet HEA. I would happily recommend this book.

Anything Valerie Bowman writes I want to read. I just recently discovered her with the “Playful Brides” series and I just absolutely love her. I find her to be such a clever and witty storyteller! Even the stories that I did not love I really enjoyed! She is a very original and unique author and her characters are always memorable to me!
“The Unforgettable hero” is a novella about Cecelia Harcourt. Poor Cecelia is in a very dire situation. Her and her sickly sister are all alone. Their parents were killed in an accident and they are now at the mercy of their uncle and aunt. To make Cecelia’s situation worse they are determined to marry her off to a horrible cousin named Percy. Cecelia is not only desperate to escape her relationship with Percy but also to afford medicine that her sister needs and that their aunt and uncle won’t buy. She tries to take matters into her own hands and decides to write a romance novel. She is determined to sell it and make enough money to help her sister and hopefully fee her from her upcoming marriage to Percy.
Unfortunately, luck is not on Cecelia’s side and while returning from a failed trip to get her book bought and published she receives a blow to the head and doesn’t remember who she is. To her rescue comes Lieutenant Adam Hunt. (Adam is the brother-in-law to Lucy and brother to Derek from the first book in the series.) When Cece sees Adam she believes that she is the heroine in her story -lady Magnolia and he is the hero- the Duke of Loveridge. Adam because of the doctor’s advice pretends that this is reality in an effort to help her gain her memory.
While this is happening, Cece’s sister is desperately looking for her and Adam is dealing with his own search for himself. There are also very brief appearances from Jane, Cassandra and Lucy. In classic Bowman style, the characters are funny and memorable. There are some unexpected twists and turns when Cece finds herself at the alter and ready to marry Percy. This was a cute and fun novella. Now off to read “The Untamed Earl” which is the next in the series and is absolutely fantastic-review to follow soon!

This book contains: amnesia, romance novels, war heroes, unnecessary lies and comfy homes.
I think this novella had potential to become a nice full-length book. I really liked the amnesia and romance novel aspects in this, and I think if it was well developed these elements would have made a great story. It felt underdeveloped and all the lying from the family members was weird and unnecessary.
I liked the characters, but they were undeveloped so I don’t have a lot to say on that subject. What really didn’t work out for me was the romance. Nothing happens romance wise most of the book, and then all of the sudden they decide to share their feelings? It was super weird and the timing was very off.
I don’t know… I’m kind of losing hope with this series. Part of me wants to keep up because I want to finish the series, but is it worth all the time I’m spending on it? This is the fifth book I’ve read and only one of them was a 4 star read.

I enjoyed this novella a lot. It was well written, entertaining and a bit different with good historical details and set in the Regency period. Cecelia, a romance writer, has been hit by a carriage and has lost her memory. Adam rescues her from the street and takes her to his family's home to recover. When she wakes up, Cecelia has amnesia and thinks she's now the heroine of her novel, which was refused publication minutes before she was struck. Lots of amusing scenes ensue. The H/h are fairly regular people, although Cecelia has a Viscount for an Uncle. She and her sister are dirt poor and Adam is a soldier. His brother was recently appointed a Dukedom for being a war hero. This is obviously part of a series (the later part I suspect), but can be read as a stand alone. There is a steamy-'ish' romance scene near the end. I look forward to reading more books from this author. 3.5 stars.

This was a quick read and very enjoyable. Cecelia Harcourt wrote a romance novel and was hoping to get it published in order to keep from marrying her horrible cousin Percy. When her parents died in a carriage accident, Cecelia and her sister, Mary went to live with their aunt and uncle. Mary had a lung disease that required a special, expensive medicine. It was no secret their uncle had fallen on hard times and only wanted Cecelia to marry his son so he could get his hands on her dowry. By publishing her novel, Cecelia wouldn't have to go through with the marriage and could afford to get herself and Mary a place of their own.
Unfortunately, the publisher is unwilling to risk taking on a woman author. At least not one who's written a romance. If she could write an adventure novel then he might be willing to chance it. Cecelia does her best to argue her case but to no avail. She leaves and on the way home gets run down by a carriage. She's lying in the street unconscious when Adam Hunt rescues her and takes her home.
Adam is the youngest of three brothers, therefore doesn't carry a title. His oldest brother, Derek, a war hero, bestowed some money on Adam, but he's reluctant to use it. He wants to make it on his own. When he witnesses Cecelia being run down, he rushes to her aid. He takes her to his brother's townhouse where he's currently residing. He's shocked when she comes to and believes she is Lady Magnolia Makepeace and he is her betrothed, Peter Perigrine, and that he possesses a title. He comes to find out she has a head injury and thinks they are the characters in her book.
I found the characters in this to be very appealing. Cecelia was such a sweet person, warm hearted and caring. Adam couldn't help but be drawn to her. He tries to resist her, knowing full well she isn't who she says she is, but the more he's around her the more difficult it becomes. Adam was an honorable man who was struggling with his own identity. Not in the manner of Cecelia but needing to find his place in the world. He thinks he needs to stay in the military in order to make his family proud but his heart really isn't in it. At the same time, he doesn't want to use his brother's money. Until an idea pops into his head to publish Cecelia's novel and thus help her care for her sister. But what happens when her memory returns? Will she still be interested in him, a man without a title and one who has no idea what to do with his life?
Like I said, a very entertaining read and one I would recommend to historical romance fans.

I’ve enjoyed Bowman’s full length novels before so I was surprised and disappointed that I didn’t really enjoy this novella.
It wasn’t a bad story per say, I just felt that it was rushed and underdeveloped. An amnesia case isn’t really fit for novella length because no matter how talented a writer, it just isn’t enough time to give the character with amnesia a chance to form an attachment to their significant other, especially if, like in the case of Adam and Cecelia, the characters have never met before and have no history. The amnesia romance is like having to repeat the “Get to Know You” stage twice. Once as the amnesiac and a second time when the character recuperates their memories and that takes time do to, time that isn’t found in novellas.
I felt that Cecelia and Adam didn’t have a chance to get to know each other the way they should have in order to have me believing in them as a couple and once Cecelia regained her memories there should have been a period where Adam got to know her as Cecelia instead of “Lady Magnolia,” the woman Cecelia thought she was.
I did enjoy the appearance of previous characters even though I’ve yet to read the first two books in the series (I have my fingers crossed that I can get to them soon) and the dash of humor that Bowman puts in each story.
Final Verdict: The Unforgettable Hero just didn’t give me a chance to get to know either character separately, much less as a couple before it was over. As disappointing as this novella was, Bowman remains a new favorite at least when it comes to full length novels.

I did enjoy the appearance of previous characters even though I’ve yet to read the first two books in the series (I have my fingers crossed that I can get to them soon) and the dash of humor that Bowman puts in each story.
Final Verdict: The Unforgettable Hero just didn’t give me a chance to get to know either character separately, much less as a couple before it was over. As disappointing as this novella was, Bowman remains a new favorite at least when it comes to full length novels.

I enjoy very much unexpected characteristics in historical romances; here the heroine, Cecilia, is a writer and as a matter of fact I like writers in romances, this is a point on its favour. The event that brings the hero, Adam, and the heroine together is very smart indeed, but at the same time here comes the problem that most of the novella have. Following my idea of love, there is a minimum amount of time (which I'd say is longer than a week or so) needed for such a strong feeling to be developed. Otherwise I call it crush, which is much more ephemeral, and significantly harder to empathises with. More so if the heroine falls in love with an idea, although charming, of the hero, and not really with the hero himself.
This is theoretically an interesting plot but it is not developed enough to be credible, in my opinion. Cecilia, starts falling in love with Adam believing him to be someone else and when her memory comes back she realises she really loves him. She didn't know him before the injuries, I believe that if I were to be in the same position as hers, I would have been highly shocked and certainly I would have need time to process the whole matter, my previous feelings, probably, would have been "unrealistic". All this happens in a very short period of time. On the other hand, if presented in a novel, everything would have had the necessary time to happen in a plausible amount of time. And I would have probably liked it a lot more.

This was a very funny and cute book set in Regency times. The story line involved two people who had decisions to make about their lives. Cecelia Harcourt is set on selling her novel to a publisher for money she needs badly. She and her ill sister are alone in the world since her parents deaths. Cecelia is trying to escape a forced marriage to her utterly despicable cousin she loathes. On her way home from the meeting the publisher, she is struck down by a coach and is rescued by a man. Since the accident happened outside the home of his brother, Adam Hunt, takes charge of the unconscious woman.
Adam knows head injuries are serious and sends for the doctor. He asks for help from his family to look after the beautiful woman. When she awakes, she thinks Adam is her finance' and her name is Lady Magnolia. The doctor says to go along with the woman and not to distress her because memory loss is tricky.
Adam is a wonderful man who thinks he's not really the hero Cecelia needs in her life. When her memory returns, she knows what she has to do. She has to marry her cousin for the sake of her sister.
When Adam finally realizes his love for Cece, he wonders if he will be too late to be the "hero" she needs for a happy ever after!!

MY THOUGHTS
I always enjoy Valerie Bowman stories. This one is no exception. Novellas or full lenghth novels she has never disappointed this reader.
This one is a novella and still has enough depth that it is truly enjoyable. Be prepared to finish it in one sitting. The characters are as usual, well developed. It does help to have read at least part of the previous books in this series as there are repeat characters involved.
I give this sweet, sexy novella a 4.75 stars!!

What I liked...
Let's begin with the fact that I'm a huge fan of historical romance. I love the brooding dukes, the whimsical ladies, and the scandalous stolen kiss that results in a forced marriage because God only knows what a kiss could mean.
Note: None of the above happened in the book being reviewed in this post but there is a protective hero and a lovely heroine.
I guess what I really liked about this book aside from the genre is the premise of it all. A woman under the protective care of a handsome man. The attraction between both characters. The temptation for Adam to give in to his desires of caressing Cecelia but not doing it because she thinks he's someone he's not and she is clearly not stable enough to handle the truth. It's exactly the type of cheesiness I like in my romance novels because who wouldn't want a man who's so protective and loving??
Without spoiling too much, I also really liked the intimate scenes between Adam and Cecelia. I mean, sure, it felt kind of random and rushed because they've only known each other for a week at most and already she's climbing eagerly into his bed but Valarie Bowman writes some steamy scenes. It was some good stuff despite being random.

What can I say about The Unforgettable Hero. First off, if you haven't read the previous books you will be fine. This story focuses on Adam Hunt and Valerie doesn't delve to deep into what happen to Adam. Basically, Adam is trying to move forward from his mishap and try to figure out his way when he stumbles upon Cecelia Harcourt who happens to get hit by a carriage. Now she's in the care of Adam and his family, and she can't remember who she is and believes she's her character from her story. Plus, she believes Adam is her intended.
Okay, cute story, but a little farfetched. I guess the story could have been dragged out a little longer, but I think it's probably for the best that it was a novella. I do love Valerie's work, I would say that this wouldn't be my favorite. Like I said its a cute story, but I'm looking forward to her next book. This story was able to give Adam purpose, find a wife, and give filler to the series. Overall, not bad.

This is book 4.5 in the "Playful Brides" series. I have been jumping around in the series so I would easily say this is a standalone book It is also about 100 pages which I like when I am in the mode for a quick read that I don't have keep coming back too. I have enjoyed the series and can't wait for the next book in this series.

Cecilia and her younger sister Mary have been at the mercy of their rather overbearing relatives for two years. It is Cecilia’s dream to come up with a way to earn enough money to provide for Mary and remove them both from their relatives clutches. With that in mind she pens a book, offers it to a publisher, is hit by a carriage and loses her memory. Adam Hunt sees the accident, comes to her rescue and then becomes her in more ways than one.
This is a fun, well written, quick read that deals with expectations, family, wishes, and needs and while doing so also provides a bit of romance. The final scene was a show stopper with a surprise twist and a happily ever after...I do think that some got off without being made to pay for their behavior but then again…maybe karma will get them if the police don’t. There wasn’t anything really new in the story but it definitely provided me with entertainment this afternoon.

Adam Hunt is walking and witnesses the accident so rushes to Cecelia's aid, he takes her to his brothers house, sends a servant for the doctor and then goes back to pick up her papers. When Cecelia awakes she thinks she is the heroine in her book and that Adam is her Fiance.
This story is heart warming, emotional, brings out friendships and love. I loved how Adam looks after Cece and does not let on about anything as he does not want her to be frightened. A thoroughly enjoyable read and I can not wait for the next in the series.

Lieutenant Adam Hunt, recently discharged from the army, lends her his assistance. The problem is that Cecelia has lost her memory and she views Adam as the hero from her novel. (It's Adam's brother, the Duke of Claringdon who is the hero and who is pulling strings that Adam doesn't want him to.)
Cecelia unwittingly takes on the identity of the lead woman in her novel, and gives herself a name that the Hunt's don't recognize as part of the ton. In the interests of Cecilia's healing, under the doctor's advice the family buy into her story, which leads to a whole new set of problems and mysteries.
A fast paced, fun novella. Suspend reality (like Cecelia does) and this is an endearing read.

Sweet little novella involving an heroine with amnesia and a hero who doesn't consider himself as one. As always Valerie Bowman was able to depict an entertaining story that leaves you happy than before.

This was a cheesy feel good story. I really liked Cecelia, she was trying her best to survive and save her family from ruin. As for Adam, he was having a hard time finding a place for himself. Things had changed for his family so fast and he couldn't find his footing. However, with Cecelia's help he found his purpose and his calling. I read this story in one sitting and loved it.

Ok, so while I thoroughly enjoy this series, I kind of felt that this fell short. Yes, in general it was short because, well, it's a novella, but it's really because of that that I think it did fall short. Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed getting to see Adam and Cecilia's story, but I felt like it either could have been expanded on to give them a full length story (dig deeper into Adam's time as a spy, Cecilia and Mary's life before/after their parent's accidents, etc) or just worked it into one of the other books. Their romance really suffered due to the length of the story. It was really rushed and went from "this girl is mad" to "I can't figure out why I miss her so much".
I did like the fact that Lucy and Derek were there to give Adam the kick in the pants he needed to find his path. I did get frustrated that he was so set on not accepting anything from Derek because he "didn't want to be a failure". Yes, ok, they obviously had a father who wasn't the most caring person and who clearly thought the only way to be successful was the military, but really? Why would Adam not get to the "Oh, I'll take the money and then pay you back" thought process before Derek pointed it out? Like, that was really 90% of the reason he was frustrated with Derek. Because he viewed what Derek was doing as a permanent chain that he'd be stuck with forever rather than a stepping stone. Of course, when he finally realized it, I really liked the path he chose.
I can't decide how I felt about Cecilia. I did like the fact that she was bound and determined to make a life for she and Mary, or barring that, a life for Mary, but she spent so much time thinking she was Lady Magnolia, I couldn't really form an opinion on Cecilia herself. I will admit that the parts of her we got, I liked.
All that being said, I hope these two make appearances again!

They have no idea her purported identity is actually a fictional character.
Verdict: This story had a cute set up, however I did feel that some of the heroine’s actions came out of the blue and the misunderstanding near the end was a little unrealistic (given the hero knew she felt as if she might be in danger, he should have questioned her rather than jumping to conclusions). Also, it was a shorter story so there wasn’t a whole lot of depth in the character development. I have not read other books in the series and this read fine as a standalone, although I suspect some secondary characters were likely featured in an earlier book.

So here I am reading books out of its series order, going against my internal OCD instincts of starting from the beginning.
I’m here coz I wanted to read an HR amnesia trope and I heard this is a good read. It’s an average read, quite short, and a bit of insta-love (2-3 days?)
If you’re into that then this is the book for you- Cecelia who’s in a destitute place and forced to marry her portly cousin Percy is trying to sell her novel, but ended up getting hit by a carriage and losing her memory. Enter Adam Hunt, youngest son of a Duke and I think rejected spy? He sees her, rescues her, and played along with her when she tried to cover up her memory loss with the plot in her novel- she being the heroine and he the hero.

You gotta love an Amnesia novel! This one was a cute, fun read. Yes you have to take into account this is fiction and somethings wouldn't necessarily happen in real life. (going to a ball after being struck in the head by a coach?) But all in all it was sweet story.

Had to use my trusty Kindle to read this novella in the series. It is numbered 4.5! It tells the less complicated story of how Adam Hunt, Lord Derek's little brother meets his fair lady and finds a career for himself. Always an enjoyable read.
