The World of Poldark

Rate this book
The World of Poldark explores the characters, the compelling stories and the era that Winston Graham's Poldark novels- and the television series - set out to recreate, the England that Ross Poldark returned to from the American War of Independence. England, and especially Cornwall, was then marked by social unrest and a deep division between rich and poor. It was a place of tin mines and shipwrecks, of new money versus old, of harsh justice and great kindness.

Amid the turmoil of eighteenth-century Cornwall, Ross comes back to a home in ruins, his father dead and his childhood sweetheart engaged to another - his own heart as battered as the country around him.

Experience the great houses and the glorious landscapes and follow the cast of characters as their stories play out against the backdrop of Cornwall's wild beauty, through interviews with the actors, behind the scenes insights and in-depth information on costumes, props and locations. Packed full of behind the scenes photographs, The World of Poldark is the ultimate guide to the popular series.

Have spent the last week working through this one in preparation for tonight start of the new season. Loved everything about it, from the pictures which were glorious, to the history of the area. Views of the main characters, the plight of the copper worker, makeup, costumes, insights from the author of the books that make up this mini series, where he got their names from. Incredibly interesting for those who love this show. Feel like I will be watching tonight with new eyes.

Palečky za to, že se kniha nezaměřuje čistě na natáčení, ale taky na dobové reálie v oblasti hornictví, nářečí, tradic, lékařské péče, ekonomické situace etc..

This is a beautiful must-have book for fans of the remake of Poldark. I watched the first series in the 1970s and dreamed of seeing Cornwall for myself one day, so it was thrilling to be in England when the first season of the remake was being made. By sheer luck we happened to be in Corsham (Truro) on a day of filming. Later we drove all over Cornwall to see the many beaches and unique port of Charlestown. Many of the abandoned mines still dot the landscape. This book is full of wonderful photographs of much of what we saw and includes a lot of history (I learned many new things.) Cornwall is a wild, romantic, incredibly beautiful area that surpassed my wildest dreams and the new series is truly an outstanding production worthy of the Poldark stories.

If you love the Poldark Saga as much as I do, this is a must read! It really gives a great overview of the historical and cultural times of Cornwall in the 18th century. This series is close to my heart and I adore all the characters that Winston Graham created. Currently watching the fourth season!

This book only covers the first season of the show.

This gorgeous book is an excellent behind-the-scenes look at the making of the 2015 edition of the TV series Poldark . The book is divided into chapters, each chapter summarizing an episode of season 1 and describing the characters, actors, the history behind the story, the sets, costumes, music and of course Cornwall! The book is printed in full color with whole page photos of the gorgeous Cornwall scenery, photos of the actors on set and smaller photos of some of the created sets. I especially liked the historical sidebars and the section on costumes. I had questioned why Demelza always wears red and green and the answer is because her clothing choices reflect the colors of Cornwall. The costume designers even dyed and faded some of the fabrics to reflect the Cornish landscape. Also, those colors look wonderful on Eleanor with her flaming red hair. I also enjoyed learning about Ross's scar and how much work was done to make handsome Aidan Turner look even more gorgeous and Ross-like. There are some period paintings to show how the designers were inspired to create certain hairstyles and clothing. I still question some of the choices but they didn't want to be slavishly accurate. They should have known there would be costume historians watching and nitpicking! At least the costumes are better than the weird clothing styles Winston Graham attempted to describe (and failed badly).

This book sadly only covers season 1. I would like an updated version to learn more about Caroline, Morwenna, Sam and Drake. This book is a must-read for fans of the show.

If you like the TV show Poldark, you will definitely want to check out this book. It had tons of behind the scenes information about the cast and crew. The pictures and photography were excellent. There was information about what was happening politically during that time period. A lot of information about costumes and how the cast got into character. This book also included what was happening during this era. There were tons of tidbits about how coal mining was during that time period, and how people like the Warleggan's came to have such power. It is a must read, the book does cover the first one or two seasons of Poldark, so if you haven't watch the show there are spoilers.

A lush book about the adaptation of the first season of Poldark. Being so deep in the series myself, having finished book 8 of 12, it was rather nostalgic to go back to the events of the first two books. Interviews with cast members about their roles (not their personal lives, huzzah) and notes from the production team made me appreciate the work and detail that went into adapting this expansive series for the small screen.

Keepers of Cornish history were an important part of the process. The music sung in the series is authentic--from Demelza's songs to Jud's drunken tunes. Dancing and folk instruments were also true to Cornish culture, with local groups filling in as extras in wedding scenes.

Catrin Meredydd has the coolest job ever. As production designer, she oversaw the locations and flowers and props and all that fun stuff, meanwhile researching late 18th century Cornwall and its material culture. I'm chuffed to no end to learn that the color scheme was chosen based on the 30-year weathering chart of copper.

With a series as long as Poldark, it's impossible to do it justice in one book (alas, my beloved Morwenna), but this is a wonderful look at the method of adaptation, and brings 1700s Cornwall to life as much as the series itself does.

I picked this up on a whim because I noticed it at my libary. I seem to have a magnet for all things Poldark. This is one of my favorite book series with a stellar television adaptation. Unfortunately the final tv season and last few books belong in the Cornish sea. The World of Poldark was a sweet little coffee table book detailing the first two seasons of the BBC show. They had plenty of BTS, photos, and historical context all about the wonderful world of Cornwall. I was a little bummed that it only featured the first two seasons of the show. I understand they want to capitalize on the popularity of the show, but why not make a collection including all 5 seasons? This was a cute little book but I absolutely would not spend $25 on it. Thank you to my library for making that sacrifice so I don't have to break out my own wee bunny wallet. I love Poldark and this series means so much to me. My favorite babydoll, Verity Poldark, got her own little chapter and that's all I needed. We didn't even get a sighting of Caroline or the Carne brothers, but I'll survive. That cast is too beautiful and I need to give my eyes a rest, right?

I saw this book in my local library and, after having watched the Poldark series, I couldn’t resist having a read.

The World of Poldark is an insightful and enjoyable read. It focuses on series one and is divided into eight chapters, one for each episode of the series. Each chapter starts with a summary of the episode which I found helpful as it had been a little while since I watched series one!

Marriott also includes short interviews with the cast. It was interesting to read the actors and actresses’ opinions on their characters and their thoughts on playing them. There were so many things they learnt that I hadn’t really considered. Horse riding lessons are perhaps more obvious but I never thought about the need for a dialect coach as Eleanor Tomlinson, Phil Davis and Beatie Edney all needed to get to grips with the Cornish accent. I also had no idea that Robin Ellis, who played Reverend Halse, was the original Ross Poldark in the 1970s adaptation as I have only seen the new series!

As well as interviews with the cast, there were also interviews with the crew: the costume designer, music composer, make-up and hair designer, production designer etc. These interviews struck me in particular as it made me realise just how ignorant I had been to the amount of effort and research that had gone into making Poldark both historically accurate and as true to the original novels as possible. It also made me appreciate all the details in the series that are often overlooked, from the bigger details such as location and costumes, to the smaller details such as the making of Ross’ scar and the use of wigs and beauty spots.

The interviews in each chapter were also accompanied by summaries of the relevant historical context which were equally fascinating. They included subjects such as putrid throat, medicines, Cornish music, gambling, Methodism, the pilchards and how they were a vital catch, duelling, Cornish mining and so on. This really made Poldark feel alive and relevant to me as I could see how the show reflected real life in eighteenth and early nineteenth century England.

Lastly, I enjoyed looking at the photos and sketches which showed how Poldark was brought to life from paper to screen. It also showed some behind the scene photos, such as Demelza and Prudie taking a selfie, which I just loved. I particularly liked seeing photos of the portraits that inspired the crew for the image of certain characters such as Ross and for features such as Elizabeth and Demelza’s dresses.

Overall this was a brilliant behind-the-scenes extra for the series that has made me want to both watch Poldark again to look out for details I may have missed and to get stuck in and read the novels.

If you liked the series, this is a must to read! I would like to read another one covering the second season.

It describes different aspects of the production, and history of Cornwall during that time period. It talks a lot about the land of Cornwall, since the people of the time had to work the land and much of their lifestyle was driven by it.

It covers things like the main characters, their costumes, the sets, etc. The most interesting me was an interview with the production designer, that sounds like a fun job!

It has covers activities and work of the time like gambling, working a in a mine, cooking, shipwrecks, riots, healthcare, religion, crime, dueling, society, the American war, economics, parties, politics.

I thought it was interesting to learn about wigs; how people of different occupations had different styles of wigs and how overtime they went out of fashion. During this time period really only top officials wore them.

This book is an excellent companion for fans of Poldark. The book covers details of the show such as actors, plot details, filming locations, costume design as well as hair and makeup design. The book also provides history about the time period that the show is set. It provides details about mining and what life was like for the wealthy and poor people who lived in Cornwall. There are many beautiful photographs of the cast and of scenic Cornwall.

A very amusing addition to the tv show, to get to know more behind the scenes! It also includes bits and pieces of history about Cornwall, mining, the period itself and cultural life in the 18th century. It goes over the first season so you dont have to wait to read this after you finished all the 5 seasons to prevent spoilers.

I picked this up intending to just flick through it, and ended up reading the whole thing cover to cover. Sure, it's a little dated now, given that it only covers the first series of Poldark, but it was fascinating reading the interviews with the production designers and seeing all the research and detail that goes into sets and costumes that the viewer probably won't even notice. I particularly enjoyed a quote from Beatie Edney, who plays Prudie, explaining how she convinced the costume designer to let her have a bum pad under her dress despite it not being common amongst the working class: "I said that Prudie would go for anything with a cushion, so she could sit down at any opportunity." (Of course, whether one could call Prudie working class is another matter...) There are lots of historical tidbits scattered through the book ("Pubs were the local banks, where you did business. The logos of banks are often similar to old pub signs.") as well as pages devoted to essential background information on smuggling and mining. Oh, and the pictures of Cornwall are stunning!

I was less keen on the fact that nearly all of the younger actresses had their specific ages given ("26-year-old Heida Reed" ... "Eleanor Tomlinson, only 23" etc) yet the writer clearly didn't think it necessary to provide the same information for any of the male actors.

I recently watched the first season of this series, and I was pleased with this book that gave an account of the history of the story and the creative process for creating the show. The book includes plenty of pictures of the actors, set, and historical art that served as the inspiration for the show. I also enjoyed some of the backstories of how the actors came to the show, how the music reflects the time and mood, and of course, my favorite, the work behind the costuming.

As a fan of the show I had to read this book just to get more insight. Definitely worth it. We get a bit more back story of what Cornwall was like in the time period from actual pictures painted and journals entries from then. We learn a bit more about the actors and actresses and how they fit their roles so well. It's a fun, quick read with loads of amazing photography. I would recommend it. 5 out of 5 stars.

It’s funny that I ordered this and was so happy when it came because I realized it was a photography book as well. I spend much of my pandemic last year deep diving into Poldark. All the seasons and everything. I haven’t loved a series in so long. It just is one of those things that came together so perfectly. Which is why I found myself ordering random books about it after I got all the Winston Graham novels.
It’s a good book to have if you love the series. Gorgeous pictures of the filming and of Cornwall. I did find the history interesting in each chapter and also the behind the scenes bits.

A companion to the PBS tv series "Poldark," based on the historical novel series by Winston Graham. The book gives insight into the characters and the actors who play them. It also gives insight into what life was like in eighteenth century Cornwall, when and where the story takes place. Behind the scenes information on the tv show is shared. It includes numerous photos throughout. It is a fun read and well worth a read by any fan of the tv show.

Interesting companion to the first season of the BBC television hit series. Plenty of gorgeous photos of both the actors and the spectacular scenery as well as interview snippets of cast and crew. There are also historic details about the Cornwall location, government, pastimes, mining, medicine, and fashions. A feast for any Poldark fan.

Very Informative

At first I was hesitant to purchase this book. Having read 11 of the 12 Poldark books I was not ready to start the final book. Being addicted to Poldark led me to read The World of Poldark. I found this book extremely fascinating and resourceful.
