A romantic historical adventure, this novel takes the reader from the starchy world of Victorian New York across the untamed country of the 19th century. With lots of twists and turns and a couple of thwarted lovers to root for, this is a fun read…
Indigo Sky is the perfect combination of history, adventure, and romance, all wrapped up into one page-turning story. We vicariously experience wild and untamed 19th Century America through the eyes of Leila, a feisty but unfailingly loyal wife to Hank, a two-timing egotist. Leila honors her marriage vows, even as the wonderful and handsome Rork makes his feelings for her known. Yet Leila is no pushover - she has a mind of her own and embraces a more modern woman's thinking. As she chases across the country in a time when travel was difficult and dangerous, we experience every emotion. A truly great read.
The book seemed to be first draft with lots of differing plots and was confusing to follow. Also some issues with placement of quotation marks made it confusing. The idea and story have a lot going for it, just wish it was edited and cleaned up better.
Leila seems to have trouble wherever she is. Married to Hank, living the good life, she almost drowns and thereby meets Rork. The story crosses the country during the Civil War. There are too many fantastic events and dialogue is too modern.

Indigo Sky : Gail Ingis
This is a historical fiction featuring adventure and romance, set after the Civil War. The female protagonist must make choices that could change her life forever. A diverse group of characters make this story flow. The author crafted a visual story for the listener. I hope to find more works from her in the future.
The narration was well done. The characters were well portrayed.I enjoyed it very much.
Gail Ingis' novel, "Indigo Sky," is love-at-first sight story that is seemingly doomed from the start. Yet, from the minute the beautiful Leila and Rork meet, I couldn't wait to see how the author would bring their complicated lives together. Gail Ingis' landscapes and characters come to life on the page with exquisite details painted into every scene. Picturesque descriptions transported me to a time of historical turmoil, but also to the tender moments of Leila and Rork's captivating love story. Their passion is palpable, and the romantic saga is reminiscent of "Gone With The Wind." Set at a similar time period, the heroine, Leila, reminded me of the determined Scarlet, without the spoiled attitude. Her faithfulness to an abusive husband, and her compassion for others, made me want to see her find happiness with the handsome artist who falls in love with Leila when he first spots her. What makes the story all the more compelling was learning that the characters were based on real people, enhanced by the author’s creativity. “Indigo Sky” was inspired after Gail Ingis viewed the painting, Domes of Yosemite, hanging at Lockwood-Mathews Mansion Museum. If the trailer doesn’t sweep you into this epic romance, this novel will do just that. See for yourself: http://bit.ly/29xUJ1H
A sweet read for lovers of early American history, adventure, and romance.
A sweeping adventure that takes the reader from the opulence of the 19th century New York social life to the dangers of an untamed West. I won’t give a synopsis of the story, but I loved the sweet romance between ever-faithful Leila—married to a cheating snake of a husband who is only in the marriage to get his hands on her family’s fortune—and Rork, the honorable business partner who falls hard for the beautiful young socialite. Although I would have liked to have seen Leila and Rork act on their feelings much sooner, the ratcheting tension between the two, the action-packed journey, and the wonderful descriptive language of the story, kept me turning the pages to see what would happen next. Nice job, Ms. Ingis!
Indigo Sky is a sweet romance full of action and adventure. I loved the male protagonist's name - Rork - manly, different, perfect for a romantic hero. All the characters are introduced skillfully, not so many to be difficult to keep up with. Ingis engages her readers from the beginning. Descriptions of the draft riots in New York to the inclusion of the historic character Charlie Parkhurst are deftly woven into the narrative to ground the reader in time and place. In the end, this is a satisfying tale of two lovers, Leila and Rork, who are thwarted by Leila's inconvenient evil husband Hank. Their adventures roll across the Old West, and through those adventures, Leila will be tested. Highly recommend Indigo Sky for readers who love their cozy romances served with a helping of history.
I need to start reading more historicals. I only hope I find more stories as engrossing and poignant as Indigo Sky. I loved Leila, even when I wanted to shake her. I spent the whole novel rooting for her - and Rork of course! Just when I thought the story was winding down, the author threw another curve in the road. I'd love to see Leila in another book. Her character evolved so dramatically throughout Indigo Sky, I can't imagine where she'd go from here. Anyone who enjoys rooting for a couple of strong, likeable characters will be as delighted by this novel as I was.
Gail Ingis brought history to life in this story. Her description of travel back in the day with the fear and the adventure brings the west to life. This story of a group traveling thru Indian attacks and a war, but also about how society overlooked the behavior of men/husbands but harsh on the women.
I enjoyed reading a bit of American history so expertly written.
