Last Girl

Rate this book
When Beatrix ‘Trix’ Daley loses her twin brother Bo in a tragic accident, she inadvertently gains his best friend, Penn, whether she wants him or not. Penn is the exact opposite of her brother. Obnoxious. Cocky. And out to sleep with as many women as possible. But he knows. He gets it. Because he lost Bo, too.

Penn’s been going out of his way to piss off Trix since he was six. Twenty years later, and getting under her skin is still his favorite pastime. And Bo’s still the only thing that keeps them tied together. Even if he has been dead for eight years.

For better or worse, Trix and Penn have been the constant in each other’s lives, and the line between love and hate continues to blur at a steady rate…but Trix is the last girl on earth a guy like Penn should fall for. So there’s no telling which side of love and hate they’ll wind up on when all is said and done. And whether they’ll wind up there, still together...or not.

Dog Lover who likes her pastries full of cream and sugar...oh...and I write some ;-)

Aside from being an author, I am also a mom to a beautiful little girl. I tell everyone I named her after my great-grandmother (because that's the mature answer), but really, I named her after my favorite princess - just so happens I got lucky and they had the same name...If I wasn't a writer, I would work on a horse ranch - I'm an animal lover (in addition to dogs, horses are at the top of my list). I wear flip-flops pretty much everywhere I go. I would rather stay awake until 5 am than get up at 5 am (years of bar tending have left their mark), if I can, I'm going to the beach AND I will always be nice to people who bring me chocolate...or coffee...if you bring me both, I'll probably love you forever.

I write the way I live, following the story wherever it may lead, always ready to start the next one. This is clearly reflected in my body of work which to date includes everything from Children's Lit to Thrillers.
I happily reside in sunny Florida (for now) with my daughter and three dogs.

I had to take a bit of time before doing a review of this book. At the beginning I was drawn in and completely invested in the story of Penn and Trix. I was thoroughly enjoying the book and when I finally reached the epilogue I was an emotional wreck but happy with the ending. However, the epilogue was not the end of the story, there was a further chapter to the book and that one chapter absolutely killed my enjoyment of this book, it totally ruined it for me and I don't understand why the author did this. I would have given this book 4 stars but because of the twist I had to drop it to just 1.5☆. I am left feeling extremely disappointed.

Absolutely unbelievable.

I don't feel like 5 stars is enough for this book that took me through so many emotions and so many tears. There is no way to even do this review justice without giving away something that I wasn't expecting.

Beatrix "Trix" Daley's twin Bo died 8 years ago and a part of her still struggles with the loss. At her side is Bo's best friend Penn Cavanaugh, whom she has a weird relationship with. Both have been present in each other's lives for 20 years but they aren't really friends.

Yet, beneath their "annoyance" for each other something more is present but will the memory of Bo bring them closer together or farther apart?

I love all the characters in the book. The friendships that Trix and Penn have with other people are so pivotal and give the characters strength and guidance when they need it most. Trix is such an amazing woman who is trying to find her own way to deal with the grief of her brother's loss as is Penn but they need to really figure how to do it.

I honestly can't say enough amazing things about this book without ruining something but this book will stay in my heart and mind for a long time. Just incredible.

Oh my god I couldn't put this book down! It was more of a 4.5 close to 5 star rating but I didn't like the fact that they had to kept reminding us she was deaf. I can even say how hard I was crying at the end, it was just so much at the end. I had to put the book down a few times and just cry for a bit. Wow, just wow

Took me a little bit to get into Trix & Penn's story. In the end, I was a hot crying mess (for me it means the author did an AMAZING job if I'm emotional reading her/his story). It is NOT a predictable love story type book.

While I didn't see the twist coming, nor do I need a HEA, it completely obliterated the book for me. Too much time invested for that kind of ending.

How do I even begin to review this book?!

I fell in love with Trix and Penn from the start. I knew their story was going to be full of trauma and healing but holy hell. So much happened in between.

There was so much beauty amongst all the pain. I really felt it all. Their friendship, their bond, their love.

I was warned that there was a plot twist that would knock me off my feet. That I would never see it coming. Half jokingly i actually guessed the ending and I’m so sad I was right.

This book absolutely destroyed me and I can’t recommend it enough. 👏🏼😭

Beatrix 'Trix" loses her twin brother, Bo, in a tragic accident when they war 18 years old. Bo's best friend Penn has been someone that Trix has fought with since they were children. Now she is stuck with him, because even though their relationship is contentious, each of them is the only other person who really knows what it was like to lose Bo. As time goes on, they realize that their relationship isn't exactly easy to define and may be more than either of them anticipated or wanted.

I got hooked into this book pretty quickly and then read it straight through. There were some things I didn't expect, that I found to be really interesting developments to the story and kept me engaged throughout. Trix is an easy character to care about. She is a smart, and driven person who is trying hard to live her life after the death of her twin brother. Penn is a cocky guy who is actually really easy to like as well despite some of his overt behaviors. It is clear that through all their bickering and fighting they both care about each other in a very complete way. It is unclear whether they could ever have a relationship beyond the one they forged out of grief and necessity. As they both start to acknowledge what they both really want from each other, everything starts to fall into place in a wonderful way.

I don't really want to give anything away, but I'll mention that I was really emotionally invested by the end and I was certainly experiencing a variety of feelings but the end of the book. There is a thing at the very end of the book that I'm not quite sure how I feel about. I think whether you love it or hate it, it will give you something to think about.

I enjoyed this book and would gladly read more by this author in the future.

This is a really good book , very well written with an amazing story and great development . it's the first book i've read that is very deep , intense and emotionally charged . the story itself is very touching and the plot is so heart warming , and i felt like i could relate to the main character since she is deaf and i have a
Quite a bit of trouble when it comes to hearing myself . and it's been an issue for me ever since i was very young . so to have a main character that isn't perfect and has some kind of disability is what i like the most about this book . because people aren't perfect and they will never be . every book that i've read has the main character as some kind of perfect angel but not this one , she's just a normal girl with struggles just like any of us and that is very relatable .

moving towards the end of this book you'll find a very big and
unexpected surprise that i particularly didn't see necessary . However it can easily be ignored . Just skip it !
But for those of you who like to be surprised i highly recommend you
read it .

DNF @ 55%. Man, I'm ready to get out of this book funk! I couldn't go on. I think I've concluded that I really dislike starting a story when the mcs are already in love (and either know it or don't, but the feelings are there). I need that development of the relationship in order to feel the connection...and that's just it -- I didn't FEEL it, but I was told about it instead. To me there is a major difference between the two, and while it makes me struggle with books -- others might not have an issue with it. Because I didn't feel the connection, I ended up becoming bored and wanting to skim. I ended up skimming after the 55% mark, and while there were some big developments for the couple (especially with the doozy of an epilogue) I am still glad I just added it to my dnf shelf...sorry

Get the tissues out ladies. Big ugly cry book here. To the author - thank you but I hate you. :) I was not expecting that.

Full of surprises, the story is told in dual POV mostly between Trix and Penn. They hate each other, but love each other. Makes sense, right? Characters were well developed. Story was very well told and easy to follow. Scenery descriptions are ok. Build up between the two makes sense as they've known each other since childhood. Hang on to your hats the further into the book you get. It just seems to get better and better and then just when you think you have it all figured out - whammo! The author hits you with a surprise. Loved it!

This book is a stand alone. It does have an HEA, sort of, but then again not......

This book was a train wreck..... But in the end, aren't all things that destroy us beautiful? Hurricanes cause destruction yet are a sight of such beauty to behold.

This book was tricky in the beginning, as it was a touch boring. Though after one third of the book, I fell for Penn hard. Trix upset me to all ends of the earth with how she held back from loving Penn, until she finally relented.

When she did, love was everywhere. The author made it possible for you to feel it.

But then I reached the epilogue, and my heart broke. It's not what you expected. Even the last chapter before the epilogue isn't what you expected, but man when you get there, it hits you hard.

I enjoy books like this that draw you in, and then leave you breathless.

Whether or not you would consider it a happy ending or not, it was, just in its own way!

I can honestly say I read this book because of the whole sister falls in love with brother's best friend. However, the ending! I can't believe it, when Bo's name came up I was so confused and mad. He was talking to Lori (who he said he dumped) then he was married to her especially when Trix hated her! You first think Bo died then you find out Trix and Penn really did. It was definitely a surprise but I am not sure how I feel about it after I invested into Trix and Penn's story.

Beatrix loses her twin brother Bo to a tragic accident. When he passes she gets his obnoxious best friend that is a pain in her butt for the past 20 plus years. Can she deal with him or will she tell him to go?

95% of the book was pretty good and I would have rated it 4 stars. Towards the end it felt like the author just kept adding drama after drama and then the ending which really put it over the edge. Last 5% was a 1 star for me.

I have NEVER cried over a book as much as I did this one, and that's saying a lot considering the books I've read. This is NOT a brother's best friend romance. This is a case study on grief and survivor's guilt. Maybe it should have been marketed as such. Who knows? It was hard to rate this, but the feelings that this book brought out of me made it a 5-star read.

If you're going to read the book, go into it knowing that the book isn't what you think, and it isn't what it was marketed as. I hate that so few people have read it. I wish I could talk to more people about it.

Now let's talk about the ending. I know some people bashed this book because of it, so spoilers ahead.

Well, I got what I wanted. I got alone.

OUTSTANDING ride of EMOTIONS!
This read truly was amazing and incredibly heartfelt with a tear jerking twist. It kept me wanting more as the suspense kept sending the story spiraling out of my control making me pick up the pace needing for a shift to happen that when it does chaos sends it spiraling again keeping me on edge playing with my emotions from beginning to end. The chemistry is filled with angst and exciting passionate hot romance. To read this story was emotionally straining and incredibly beautiful but the ending was the worst part of all and so unexpectedly twisted it tore me apart sobbing in pure pain filled agony. It was truly the best and worst saved for the last(you saved the best for the last) and the most memorable part that I will always reflect on when it comes to recapping any thoughts I have on remembering this amazing read. I loved this well written read and highly recommend it without an ounce of hesitation.

The story follows Trix and Penn and their lives after Bo, her twin brother and his best friend died after being run over by a car. Since Bo was gone they each survived in their own way - she as a nurse who went on stints with Doctors without borders and he as a fireman. But she always comes home to him and he always waits for her. They stay connected through their hurt about Bo's death, or do they? Are there something more and will they have the courage to discover the possibilities. This is a heart wrenching story and the twist at the end just caught me unaware. Very well written and left me in tears.

Have you ever read a book that just stole your breath away? This one did to me. The three musketeers, Bo,Trix and Penn have so much of their lives to live. I felt their pain throughout the book. This author has a gift that few are able to express with words in a story. This story is about love and loss. There are some funny moments and intensely sexy moments. I’m not spoiling anything about this book but just remember that I told you after you finish this book it will take you some time to get back to reality. It affected me so much I sat and told a guy friend all about the book and cried. It’s an amazing book. Thank you !

The last love but with a major twist at the end

Last Girl took me on a roller-coaster that was both exhilarating but also heart stopping emotional. I have read several books by K.S. Thomas and have liked them so I was not quite prepared for this story-line. I am of mixed feelings after picking this story up and putting it down several times. The main story was nicely done but there were some twists, including the ending, which just sucker punched me and not necessarily in a good way. Overall I think this story was just not a good fit for me but it may be really wonderful for other readers.

I received a free ARC of this book in exchange for my honest review. My opinions are all my own.

I liked this book. Then almost dnf it. Then loved it. Then hated the ending. I don’t necessarily need a hea every book but Bo’s chapter was just SO out of left field that I literally had to go back a couple of times the first paragraph to see if what I was reading was real. I get it, SHOCK value was definitely shocking but I think this story would have been better as a hea. The author could have 100% wrote a sequel from the point of view of that last chapter and just gave us Bo’s story. I think that would have made for a better duet than what I just read. 4 stars up until that last chapter. 1.5 with it.

Emotional damage

I'm completely torn on reviewing this book. If I was reviewing it up to the point BEFORE the epilogue, then it would have been 5 stars. If I'd known before I started what the epilogue was like, I'd have never started reading it 🙈

It definitely has the shock factor and I've been sat thinking WTF for the last half an hour.

It's hard to properly review without giving away major spoilers. I'm going to pretend I never read the epilogue and then I can go about my day happily 😂

Trix's brother Bo dies in an accident. His best friend Penn has always looked out for her, even as he does his best to tease and piss her off. This is a very emotional story as their relationship changes, just a roller-coaster - grab the tissues. I enjoyed this book - great characters, easy to read. Right up until the epilogue. And now I'm totally confused.

Oh my gosh...just read it

I ugly cried because of this book. It was beautiful and sweet and nothing like I expected. I’m still crying. I loved Penn and Trixie. I felt their loss and pain and grief and joy and happiness. Then the ending. Blew. My. Mind. Beautiful words to a beautiful story. Stories really do have all the power. Thank you for the read! I will be reading more from this author.

This was recommended to me by a friend of mine,

“Let me know if you ever want to read a book that has you sobbing on the floor with a huge twist” - The recommendation in question.

She was not wrong. I am very emotional, and can’t see straight from the tears. So, if you want a book that will literally have you going through the motions and waves of literally every human emotion possible, this is perfect for you.

5⭐️ no doubt.

i seriously was not expecting this to be so goddamn sad. i could have lived with bo being dead but killing trix and penn in the last couple pages and revealing they were the ones who actually died that night while bo lived was CRUEL AND UNUSUAL PUNISHMENT. even worse was finding out they were both inlove with each other the entire time and never got to tell each other. it’s so heartbreakingly depressing that im just staring at the wall sobbing now

The book itself was amazing but the epilogue made absolutely no sense. The author had an amazing writing style and i loved the world building and the fact that the main character was deaf but the epilogue completely ruined it for me as it made no sense that the brother would marry the girl his sister and his best friend hated. Having Bo be the one to be alive and have this be a story within a story threw me off.
