"William Murray provides a unique perspective that should be read, particularly by America's youth, at a time central planners are once again promising utopian dreams at a cost to the most productive among us.” ―Governor Mike Huckabee Utopian dreamers are deceived and deceiving. Their “fight for the people” rhetoric may sound good at first, but history proves egalitarian governments and the cultures they try to create destroy freedom, destroy creativity, destroy human lives, create poverty and misery, and often spread beyond their borders to bring others under slavery. Utopians believe that through their own personal brilliance a better society can be created on earth. When the belief in man as a creation in the image of God is completely rejected, the use of slavery and mass execution can be justified in the name of the creation of a utopian state for the masses. Pol Pot, Vladimir Lenin, Adolf Hitler, Joseph Stalin, Mao Tse-tung―together these so-called visionaries through their fanciful policies are responsible for the deaths of millions of people. In Utopian Road to Hell William J. Murray, son of atheist apologist Madelyn Murray O’Hair, describes the totalitarians throughout history and the current utopians who are determined to engage in social engineering to control the lives of every person on earth. From Marx to Hitler, Murray explains the progression of socialist engineering from its occultist roots to the extreme madness of the Nazis’ nationalistic racism. From Margaret Sanger’s Planned Parenthood and Saul Alinsky’s Rules for Radicals , the rebellious desire to be free from morality drives the “at-any-cost” campaigns such as abortion on demand, no-fault divorce, same-sex marriage, and overreaching government provisions. From Woodrow Wilson’s “living document” distortion of the Constitution and his income tax to FDR’s New Deal to Obama’s executive orders, those who seek centralized power typically do so by proclaiming some utopian scheme that they claim will perfect mankind and eliminate competition, greed, poverty, and war. William J. Murray masterfully educates us on the utopians’ swath of destruction throughout history and warns us of the dangers of present-day utopians fighting to hold power. We must heed the warning of George Washington when he said in his 1796 Farewell Address that it is important for those entrusted with the administration of this great and free nation, “to confine themselves within their respective constitutional spheres, avoiding in the exercise of the powers of one department to encroach upon another.” We must reclaim the freedom of the individual to avoid the continued path down the utopian road to hell.
I highly recommend this book written, surprisingly, by the son of the atheist crusader Madalyne Murray O'Hair. In this 2016 publication, William (Bill) J. Murray surveys utopian ideologies such as Plato's REPUBLIC and Sir Thomas More's UTOPIA; utopian societies such as Francois Noel Babeuf's "conspiracy of equals" and Marx's "dictatorship of the proletariat;" and modern iterations of utopian philosophies expressed in cultural Marxism and Progressive politics. Highly relevant to the current rise of non-state powers such as the World Economic Forum and World Health Organization is Murray's subtitle: "ENSLAVING AMERICA AND THE WORLD WITH CENTRAL PLANNING." With this subtitle, Murray anticipated by 4 years the authority assumed in 2020 over vaccine and lockdown policies worldwide by the World Health Organization; and now asserted over economic and border policies of nations by the World Economic Forum and United Nations who boldly assert their central plan that "By 2030 you will own nothing and you will be happy." The utopian plans they are implementing will bring hell on earth as their "Build Back Better" policies inevitably collapse. An example is the Biden administration promise to "End fossil fuels," and replace with wind and solar power-- regardless whether this brings the economy to ruin. Murray's book will EXPLAIN how these powerful ideologues THINK, and warns citizens that we MUST RESIST or surrender our independence to servitude. Bill Murray writes with brevity, clarity, and sufficient historic detail to inform without overwhelming. This work is a good addition to any library, as a primer, as a review, as a reference, and as a call to action!
One of the things I have learned from dystopian novels and history is that living in a totalitarian regime is a nightmare. Once you fall into one of these pits of hell, it's nearly impossible to get out; as evidenced in Russia where two members of the group Pussy Riot spent almost two years in prison for "hooliganism motivated by religious hatred". Another member has been arrested for protesting just this year. There is a very real threat to freedom - we can see the threat in our current situation. It's possible in the near future all of humanity is chipped and monitored and enslaved for the betterment of the world. Someone's idea of utopia. A fanatical idealist is a dangerous person, be it a conservative or a progressive. They don't care what they have to do in order to fulfill their idea of a perfect society. Even if people die as a result.
William J. Murray does an adequate job of cataloguing past attempts to create a communist government. According to Professor Stephen Kotkin of Princeton University, communism has killed at least 65 million people between 1917 and 2017. That figure is staggering. Why? Why does an idea of an egalitarian society where everyone's basic needs are met actualize as a government willing to starve, torture, and kill its people? Murray doesn't have the answer to that question.
I think this book tries to simplify a complex situation and takes a far too conservative attitude. Murray is right that we have to protect our freedoms, but he doesn't understand the need for government to regulate some aspects of our lives. Just as an all powerful government is a threat to freedom, so is an all powerful elite.
Murray attacks Franklin D. Roosevelt, ignoring that FDR created jobs for young African American men to help them get on their feet while doing work that improved our country. Murray claims Social Security and Medicare are a drain to United States tax dollars while ignoring our bloated military budget, which allows us to impose our will on other countries in much the same way Murray says the United Nations does. I think Social Security and Medicare are noble programs. I gladly pay my taxes so that the little old lady down the street can buy food for herself and her cats, or so that families who have children born with disabilities receive assistance. I gladly support schools and libraries. Anthropologist Margaret Mead says that the first sign of civilization is remains found with a healed femur because it meant other people cared for that person until he/she healed. How much more civilized is a society that cares for its elders and disabled?
I must not forget that William J. Murray thinks the EPA and FDA encroach upon our freedoms. I, for one, don't want to go back to the days when a factory could dump toxic material where it will drain into my drinking water. Or what about the days when doctors could prescribe arsenic and mercury?
The Utopian Road to Hell doesn't stand up under scrutiny. If you're looking for a more academic refutation of communism, I suggest watching lectures by Clinical Psychologist Jordan Peterson. He does a much better job at explaining the sociopolitical reasons why a collective society can't work. I find his lectures fascinating. He does go on tangents that have tangents, but he understands the appeal of communism and socialism for compassionate people. We want the world to be a better place for everyone, not just a few select people.
It's about moderation. The middle road. In my heart I am a progressive but in my mind I am a conservative. And that's how governments should be.
Excellent read. I read it like a text book: read, review, think. The book is well documented with references. The history of the supposed utopian society is sad and very tragic. In the year of an election, 2020 for those of us in the United States, this is a must read. One must know the history of the political structure some of the presidential candidates are supporting.
I spent more time reading each page of this book than any other book I have read lately. No I was not forcing myself to read boring pages, I was pausing to reflect on so many pages that I felt like I was writing this book. I have made more than 50 notes on paper so as to not annotate this book (so I can generate fresh perspective when I reread it). He covers the socialist agenda from research that I have been following over the last 20 years. Some of his conclusions are different from my take aways, but all are faultlessly logical. I am a little miffed because this is the book I would have written from my research. But now I get to add his ideas into a greater tome. :>) Most modern people were raised with the concept of Utopia as a political system creating heaven on earth. Wrong! Utopia is hell on earth. This book explores all the ramifications of the fanatic efforts to create a perfect society. Perfect for whom? The rulers have their unstated goal – absolute power. But the ruled are crushed under the totalitarian boot – forever! The various forms of socialism through history from Plato, through the French Revolution guillotine, through the soviet, fascist, red, Khmer, and democratic socialism are examined. Hundreds of millions of people were sacrificed to the evil ideology of socialism attempting to create utopia. The ties with Satanism, perversion, environmentalism, propaganda, the U.N. and world wide cabals (George Soros) with successful socialist advances are surveyed. He exposes the foul lives of early totalitarians like Sanger (Planned Parenthood), Baldwin (ACLU), John Dewey (education), Rachel Carson (Silent Spring), Harry Hay (gay rights), George Soros and Saul Alinsky (Obama mentor and “Rules for Radicles”). He looks at some of the ideological gurus like Marx, Plato, Schiller, Rousseau, and Lycurgus (Sparta) – at their less than savory lives leading to their ideology. He also touches on fiction that describes life in totalitarian worlds like 1984 (Orwell), Brave New World (Huxley), Utopia (More), Philip Dru: Administrator…(Edward House) and Looking Backward: 2000- 1887 (Bellamy). Finally he shows the damage done by socialist presidents like Woodrow Wilson, FDR, LBJ, Clinton and (of course) Obama. Much of the news of the last 50 years that our media has whitewashed for us is explored. William J Murray does show us what the alternative to socialist slavery could be when he explores some writings by Tocqueville, Hayek, Friedman, Franklin and Washington. But then as we work through the potential damage, the lives already destroyed and the scary future of today’s politics the overall effect for me is sadness and despair. I can only offer my apologies to the future generation that has lost so much and is on track to lose all freedom that is left. Last note - in the last 3 pages he states “Canada has democracy but no freedom” – I agree. But I disagree that the US is any closer to freedom than we are. Much of his book probes the socialist take over in American Politics. Most incidents are reflected by Canadian politics and rulers – especially Trudeau 1 & 2. But he doesn’t make the case that our government is worse. The potential for a return of freedom are very bleak in all his not yet socialist country examples.
author proved with examples from history that "the road to hell is paved with good intentions" or "Hell is full of good meanings, but heaven is full of good works". The most dangerous man is the one who tells that he wants to make the world a better place AND who has the power to do so. Thus, while declaring his good intentions and using slogans such as "equality", "prosperity", "right to..." such leader can easily implement completely opposite system of oppression of an individual. The task of society is to identify when this type of changes in the system is implemented and not to fall for someones who's in power good intentions to make the world a better place.
Excellent book that highlights the dangers of government dependency. Author looks at the consequence of surrendering personal freedom and costs of tyranny in its many forms. Ultimately the author seeks to expose the growing dependency of the American people on the government and the risks of doing so. This is a well reasoned argument for personal freedom and responsibility akin to what the founding fathers originally intended.
I enjoyed some of the commentary about the threat that extremist collectivism poses to global health and freedom. However I found most of the narrative to be very repetitive and lacking in significant substance.
This was incredibly insightful! A good start into the differences between the collectivist ideology and liberty. Definitely a recommended read to anyone!
Summaries of multiple major organizers of political agendas. Leaders that limit individual freedoms by promoting their own agendas. Communist, socialist, marxist, and all power obsessed utopians who failed in bringing the benefits of their ideas to their followers. Written by the son of Madelyn Murray O'hare who raised the author as a Marxist. Chilling narratives.
