The final story of the Chaos Series starts, well, chaotically. Cara is racing on Dubh to Brendan’s court to provide him a necessary antidote. Apparently, Brendan has been cursed into a coma-like state, a living death, by Yvette. Now, the Green King’s court is split between those who support Brendan and those who support Yvette, who declares that she and Brendan married at some point. Cara and Drake, along with support from MacKenzie and his army, have waited outside the boundaries of the castle to see whether or not Cara’s antidote, provided by Bart, will work.
See? Chaotic.
I was initially thrown off by the way the reader was thrown into the events. I felt like I was playing catch-up for a bit until, eventually, all the details start to come out. This happens after Cara awakens Brendan with the antidote and right before she runs off again to where the armies await.
So, months have passed in Cara’s world and lots of things have happened within the world of the story: Yvette has taken over Brendan’s court as queen, MacKenzie has made a deal with Cara (his army for her hand in marriage), Sorcha is apparently dealing with a difficult pregnancy, the blight has grown non-stop and Cara has somewhere along the lines decided that she loves Brendan and only Brendan.
For some reason, all of these tidbits catches me off guard, almost like I feel like I missed a section of an entire book. You know, like where was book 5.5? I want to know how Yvette pulled this stuff off and how she interacted with Cara (c’mon, you know you want to read that too). I feel like I missed out on so much! And despite being annoyed I have to give kudos to the author. She has successfully hooked me and created character I care about; they live in such an interesting world that I was to know how they got in their current predicament. Sure, I want to know what happens now, but I want to know that too. Kudos, Claire Farrell.
Still, though… it’s kind of a bummer.
Once Brendan awakes and the business of Yvette and then MacKenzie are dealt with, the search for the last treasure, the cup, must continue. Cara can’t let Chaos-bringers get her down, even if he is enraged by her backing out of their deal.
Not that I blame her. I mean, he’s one step away from being Sadler and there’s no way she’s doing that again.
First, though, she has to deal with Drake, who’s going through his own faery meltdown. As he was one of my favorite characters in the beginning, I found his storyline particularly painful. I know he made his choices, but I feel like he had legit reasons for what he did. In both Usurper and Blight, you get the idea that he was trying to protect Cara and Scarlet. He acted like a jackass, but I had thought things were on the up for him. Where did the super-cold animosity suddenly come from? It was like being back in Queen or Usurper again.
And I kind of have to dislike Cara for her part. Even Brendan notices how harsh she is to Drake, trying to make her realize how hard it is to see Brendan and Cara’s relationship strengthening. Cara doesn’t even try to hide it. At one point, Brendan has to remind her that she loved Drake once and while Drake did marry Sorcha, he did not do it because he loved her.
Eventually, Cara gets both her boys on track (barely sober) and their final quest can continue. It’s definitely been a build-up to the end and I won’t give it away too much. When it was all over, however, I was a bit disappointed at first. Not that the ending was bad, just that it was not what I expected.
Days later, as I thought about it more, I realized that it had continued to stick with the “faery tale” structure. The ending is bittersweet. The characters all have a bit of evil with their good and, upon making their choices, they have to live with them. Cara and the rest accept that the faery world is what it is and that the stories are not all fun magic and sparkly wings. Instead, it’s scary and dark. Sometimes, you have to make difficult choices and you have to give a part of yourself with that choice.
And then you have to live with it.
All in all, though, I did enjoy the series. It’s definitely been a whirlwind and there are moments when you love the characters and when you can’t believe when they act the way they do. I recommend it but… be prepared for some emotions!
Onward to the favorites…
Favorite Character: Dubh, Issy and Tris. Yay for faery animals! Oh and surprise: Sorcha. She understands Drake and it’s sad.
Favorite Runner-Up: Brendan. He stands up for Drake and he’s better than all of us, I swear. He makes being a king look like a Sims game.
Least Favorite Character: Donella. She replaces Sorcha as top bitch.
Favorite Fairy Tale Gone Horrid: What Cara has to do with the cup sounds disgusting…
Favorite Moment: MERMAIDS.
Least Favorite Moment: Drake visits the Chaos Court and there’s an innocent moment of mistaken identity. Talk about twisting the knife that’s already in his heart.
Favorite Quote: Brendan…seriously, this guy has class.
“You can’t bend him to your will or force him to be the way you want him to be. That’s exactly the same thing you accuse him of doing to you… Move on. Accept that he gets to decide what happens in this court, whether you agree with it or not… Choose your battles wisely, or you may be the cause of the things you fight against…”
Such a king, man.
