It is time to strip away the mystery surrounding the reintroduction phase of the low FODMAP diet. This book brings clarity to a topic where knowledge, experience, information and skills are lacking. The book is written by a registered dietitian who has personally completed the diet and recently worked at King's College London researching the evidence behind the low FODMAP diet. The book will provide a structured re-challenging protocol to follow and expose the two main methods you can use to re-challenge individual FODMAPs. A set of tables are provided which detail the foods containing individual FODMAPs to be re-challenged, along with the appropriate portion sizes to consume. Explanations of FODMAP tolerance levels and FODMAP thresholds will help you understand your results. The second section of the book outlines how you can attempt to reintroduce FODMAPs back into your diet based on the results you obtain from your re-challenges. A further set of tables detailing foods that contain more than one type of FODMAP are included for reference. Following the process of re-challenging and reintroducing FODMAPs will lead to you following a modified low FODMAP diet in the long term. At the end of the book is an extensive Frequently Asked Questions section with many valuable answers to common problems encountered from the reintroduction phase. The reintroduction phase is most important part but also the most difficult part of the low FODMAP diet. To help manage your IBS symptoms and quality of life in the long term it is vital to complete the reintroduction phase. The ultimate aim is to self-manage a long term modified low FODMAP diet, consuming high FODMAP foods to personal tolerance without triggering IBS symptoms.
Suffering from IBS at 31 was not a walk in the park by any means. I had constant stomach pain and bloating and had no real idea why. Finally a doctor suggested IBS and I was stunned, never realizing how IBS can affect individuals differently. After learning about the FODMAP Diet and the elimination process I finally started to feel better. I was able to do that the first phase entirely free, by following some blogs and Pinterest. However, the reintroduction phase is an entirely different story.
I tried reading blogs; there wasn't enough information. Nothing on Pinterest. Nothing nowhere, except paying for a nutritionist, and I don't know about you, but my deductibles are just way too high. I discovered The Re-challenging and Reintroducing FODMAPS: A self-help guide to the entire reintroduction phase of the low FODMAP diet.
I bought the kindle edition, so I could carry my kindle everywhere and constantly remind myself of my options when choosing items to reintroduce. The book itself is rather short, but it is a lot of information, so you will need to go back to it, multiple times. I'm very glad I got the kindle book.
I have reintroduced about 4 of the high FODMAPS back into my diet, keeping a food journal for the first time in my life, to really keep track of my triggers, and I am just so grateful for this book to have helped me map all of this and make it through with very little ease.
If you need specific and clear information about how to adopt the low FODMAPS diet due to IBS or another GI disorder, this book is indispensable. The author is a Registered Dietitian who presents the “how to.” This book focuses on the second phase of the diet, Reintroduction, after you’ve successfully completed the Elimination phase and have minimal or no symptoms and are ready to test for your tolerance of the specific FODMAP components (eg, fructose, polyol, lactose, fructans).
Author mentions other resources to assist you with this journey for discovering your food intolerances and successfully resuming as normal a diet as possible. Note: this book is necessary but not sufficient for understanding your disorder, eg, IBS, and the FODMAPs. In addition to cited resources, I highly recommend the Monash University Hospital FODMAP app and associated well-monitored and administered FB groups. All info in these resources is based on scientific evidence without contamination by dangerous claims and fake “experts.”
After reading much conflicting information, this book demystified the FODMAP elimination diet and reintroduction process in a way that allowed me to successfully identify my FODMAP triggers. I highly recommend this book to anyone with IBS - knowing what I can eat has made me feel MUCH better and given me freedom to eat out with family and friends!
Extremely helpful in understanding the whole plan- especially the reintroduction phase which can be confusing because some FODMAP foods fall into two categories. This is the clearest explanation I have found from all the sources I have researched. This is concise and a quick read.
