I dread to type the following words but here goes; I can actually see this book made into a pretty spectacular movie. Why the dread? Cause it is by now such a cliche. Every second review I read has those exact same words in them. Rest assured. Not every 100 reviews I have written has that sentence in it so I hope that carries some weight.
The book is easy, likeable characters, clear, clean devision between good and bad, a touch of romance and dare I jubilate over this? I dare. NO TEENAGE ANGST,
Our Skye is a cool kid. Has more reason than most to mope but apart from a well deserved one liner here and there the girl has her priorities straight.
This is a first volume in a series. In the opening volume the title character battles the Rupublic that killed her family. It's basically the story of a single person who organize an army to rebel against an evil empire.
Skye is an unexpected heroine, strong, but gentle. And the cast of friends she draws to herself is diverse and sometimes funny. But don't underestimate this team.
The premise of the book is good, but the grammar was not. Words were missing, and there were extra ones injected in the wrong spots. Needs a really good clean up. Also, the story line has potential, but the writing style just made it bad. The author made one of the biggest mistakes in writing by telling the story instead of showing. It made the characters fall flat and left me feeling nothing in the way of emotion towards any of them. I found my mind wandering often, and had to skim parts to get through because I was falling asleep. The only engaging portion of the entire book was during the race. Everything else was just so emotionless it didn't stand out at all. Plus, the writing tense was awkward. I felt like I was reading the script for a movie instead of a novel.
The words "state-of-the-art" and "whatever I/you have to do" was massively overused, as well as the word that. I started rolling my eyes at these phrases half way through.
I think if the author got a good editor and rewrote the story it could be a good one, but I can't in good conscience give it a good rating.
For my clean readers, Includes language and violence. No sexual scenes.
I was really looking forward to reading it, the synopsis sounded super cool. I have this love-hate relationship with Sci-Fi books where I never have the need to pick them up but when I do I enjoy them immensely, but this book didn’t quite meet my expectations. I love the characters and how different each of them are, but everything happened really quickly. The relationships between all the characters just escalates (especially Skye and her love interest in this book) and the plot just keeps whipping in and out despite the lack of world building. The author has written this epic adventure of a story but it just wasn’t planned thoroughly. I feel like everything was rushed, including the writing. It wasn’t bad or anything, but it just needs some tweaking (grammar and punctuation wise).
Apart from that, everything else was fine. The story overall had its flaws, but I enjoyed it! This book has so much potential, and I hope the sequel gets better! I recommend this if you’re a fan of Dystopian & Sci-Fi. I feel like fans of The Maze Runners Series would highly enjoy this!
From the very first chapter I was taken there and transported right into Skye's world, feeling her emotions and the drive she has for the ones she loves. She is a great character with a true heart and compassion for others.
Skye has lived her life sheltered and staying hidden from the rulers of the One Republic. She has abnormal strength and abilities that the government wants to exploit. When the enemy comes to her door, her world changes and she must run and learn fast about the rest of the world outside of her previously protected life on the island.
This book is action packed, kept me on my toes throughout, totally believable and leaves you with that 'what if' feeling.
I loved every moment and I seriously cannot wait to get started on book 2. I'll definitely be looking out for more from this author. This for me was a really easy 5 stars, I'd probably give more if I could !
Living in the time where genes are being modified makes this page turning book even more urgent. The heroine of this book is quite compelling. Those of you who don't tolerate violence won't want to read this, but it does illustrate the widening gulf between the 'have' and 'have not'. How much control will we release to our government? Are we like the proverbial frog in the pot of heating water not even aware of what is heating up around us? Plenty of food for thought.
Unfortunately for me, this book didn't do it for me. I tried, and I really do like this type of novel, but the writing style and the way the characters are portrayed just didn't entice me enough to finish the book.
Good story, with heroes and action. It would have been better after a good proof reading and fixup. I almost dropped it to two stars, yet could have been four star material.
