I don't even know where to start with how much I LOVED this book. The plot was flawless, and flowed beautifully. I never once felt the need to skim, but I sure felt the need to keep turning the page! The side characters were interesting and well written. It was a bit of a slow burn for me, with the sexy times not showing up until halfway through the book. The sexual tension before that was off the charts though. I would have also preferred a bit more of a time jump for the epilogue, but we will see more from this couple in future books.
Moon was so frigging hot, and sexy. He was the epitome of the perfect book anti-hero. I enjoyed Mak slightly less just because she took such a long time to get over her judgmental morals. It was understandable with her being a former cop, but she acted like a naive brat on a couple occasions and I wanted to hit her.
Overall this was an amazing read for me, and I need Alex's book like RIGHT NOW!
self note: just my personal preference. not into the herione looking like ow hero used to love and still does (even though it's not the same kind of love anymore )he not only loved her but had his wet dreams starred her (ow). but I'm hearing the hero is great so Maybe I'll give this a chance one day. idk if I can get over h looking like his past love. will see
Ok so my Gr friend gave more some more details on this and I am convinced to give this a try despite my own hang ups on the lookalike part.lol

Even with the repetitive parts, this book was awesome. A great mystery, lots of action and intensity. Fantastic characters. I HAVE to read the next book in this series!
Catch Xavier Moon. Known far and wide as the undisputed head of the Arizona crime syndicate though he's never been linked or convicted to any real crimes. A man Madison "Mak" Kinlock has no business being associated with despite the fact her lady parts scream otherwise.
When circumstances put Mak in Moon's debt it's not a surprise that payment due is in the form of having to spend time at his compound, in his bed. Not a bad price to pay if only Mak, ex-cop, didn't have to worry about the fallout that would occur should she be seen with Moon.

In a round about vague way, this book/new series has the flavor of Raphael and Cyn from D.B. Reynold's "Vampires In America" series. Moon is no Raphael but Moon's character parallels the unapologetic dark natured, ruthless cutthroat persona who isn't afraid to take a life should the need arises. Madison is by no means on par with Cyn but she is a kick ass ball buster individual who goes toe to toe with the big guys. The type of character who refuses to be a victim damsel in distress. Her motto could be: “I'm a damsel, I'm in distress, I can handle this. Have a nice day!” ~Walt Disney Company.
Told first person POV by Madison, this story drew me in as I found myself getting an insider view on the (fictional) treatment of women in the police force. Yes, the existing standards and on paper expectations are the same for women and men but there's no getting around peer relationships and those bigoted individuals who continue to feel women shouldn't be more than glorified secretaries, servants, or womb incubators.
As to the core romance. I'm on the fence. Yes, the heat sizzled between the two but the initial spark leading to all the five alarm toe curling bedroom action wasn't convincing enough to sell me on the two becoming a couple. Am I happy they did become a couple? Duh. It's just that I was looking for more than a resemblance to a previous love interest and physical attributes as a basis for the two to take a chance on love. That's all.
Adult content. If you've read a Holly Roberts book you know this author brings it. The relationship dynamic does have a D/s slant (fyi: Madison isn't the Dominant, hehehe) though certainly not in any BDSM way. I definitely would have appreciated more adult scenes between the two but can't fault the author for using the adult content to supplement the story line vs the reverse.
Secondary characters. All had a role in complimenting the central characters and story line. Readers will have their favorites and for me it was Cori. This is one girl I'd love to, absolutely love to, have a girls night out followed by a spa day and maybe a get together for a night of Zilch.
One word of caution for any potential reader. I did not tag this book as dark as it's not. The caveat though is that there are scenes that can be disturbing to those sensitive to mafia type violence/blood letting/crime. And, this author does not shy away from killing off important characters if her muse has convinced her it's in the best interests of the story. I personally have shared with the author why she might be feeling pain from the mythical arrows I've shot at her for doing this, but, she continues. Once again I whipped out my bow and shot a few sharp pointy arrows at you Ms. Roberts.
As to why I went with a four star rating.... While my heart said this was a ten star book I can't ignore my pesky brain that said a four star was more realistic. I can't go into my specific issues as I follow the no spoiler code of conduct. A vague reference that I can say is that there were details that weren't followed up on, scenes that had an incomplete feel, and a wrap up climatic scene that was rushed, condensed, and failed to give me (the reader) the satisfaction my blood thirsty nature demands.
This is a promising start to a new series that did have some issues but I loved it and can't wait for the next installment Sizzle: Heat, Sizzle, Burn which I see is tentatively scheduled for release July/2016. For those readers who enjoy the alpha male antihero and strong female female this is definitely a book to check out.
This book took me by surprise. I knew it was romantic suspense, and that the hero was more of an anti-hero, but I wasn't expecting it to make me feel as conflicted as it did. It didn't shy away from the darker side of criminal life. There was quite a bit of violence, and sometimes you couldn't tell if the "good guys" were so good after all.
Madison Abigail Kinlock, known to most as Mak, is a former police officer turned private investigator. She had dreamed of being a cop her whole life, so her career ending shoulder injury 3 years into her dream was a rude awakening. She's not really qualified for much else, and she can't afford to only work part time to finish school. But, a girl's got to eat, so she swallows her pride, and her disdain, and becomes a PI. Due to this decision, she's no longer welcome in her old cop circles. The blue line isn't fond of PIs, as it turns out. She lives in Phoenix, but her parents have retired to Florida, so she really doesn't have anyone anymore. But, she still isn't prepared for the trouble she's about to get into.
Moon controls Arizona's biggest crime organization. He's ruthless, scary, and not in any way "respectable". He's also sexy as hell. They even have classes on him and his organization in the police academy. That's how Mak knows who he is as soon as she sees him in person for the first time. Moon has no living immediate family, and so he treats his people as family. He's good to them, and they're loyal to him. Everyone has their own reasons for becoming who they are, and Moon is no different. But he doesn't use anything about his past to justify his actions. He knows he's a bad guy, and he's made peace with that fact. But, he wants Madison. Badly. And he works to convince her to give him a chance, though they come at the law from opposite ends.
Moon and Mak's chemistry was off the charts hot, and I loved their push-and-pull dynamic. She doesn't understand her reaction to him, as she's always believed him to be a killer and all around bad guy. This book is only told in Mak's point of view, so we don't know much about Moon's inner thoughts unless he decides to share them with her. So there's a lot of frustration on her end about her inability to stop thinking about him, and what that could end up meaning for her, and her life. There was also some brutal violence in the story, and that was often hard to read, even when it was only someone's history being discussed, much less when it was actually happening on the page.
The world created here, while dangerous and violent, is enthralling, and I found myself constantly wanting to know more. Things move quickly, but I was so there for the ride. One of my favorite side characters, Alex Gomez, Moon's right hand man, is the hero of book 2, which is definitely going on my list. It appears the first 5 books of this series are already currently available.
One of the things I loved about Moon and Mak, is that they're always honest with each other. Even when it hurts. Especially then. Moon never hides who he is, he basically just dares her to accept him. She never hides her dislike of many aspects of his life, and has him rethinking some things, and compromising on others. He'll never be a "good guy", but he lives by his own code of ethics, and he sleeps well at night. Mak has to figure out if she's willing to accept that or not. I, as the reader, had to do the same.
I really loved this book, and how it made me think, feel, and question things. It was so much more than I was expecting. Also, discovering the author's own history as a police officer made things even more believable. I definitely recommend this book to romantic suspense lovers, especially those that love a good criminal anti-hero!
ARC provided by Publisher in exchange for an honest review. Reviewed by Megan from Alpha Book Club
Things are getting hot in Phoenix and I am not talking about the temperature. Mak is an ex-cop having to leave the force because of an injury so she becomes a Private Investigator. While she is working on a case she meets up with some members of one of the largest crime syndicates in the country. She becomes injured so is taken to Moon's home, he is the head of Arizona's syndicate. They have an instant attraction that they both try to fight but Mak is in danger and Moon makes it his mission to keep her safe. The attraction grows as does the danger to Mak. This book had me hooked after the first couple of pages, its a love story in the truest sense of the work. It is one of those books that you just hate to see the last page when you get to it. I was given this book as as arc reader for an honest review.
Guns and sweat don't usually mix, but if you read more than the first couple of chapters of HEAT, you'll know they do. Oh yeah, they do.
It takes a lot for me to fall in love with a character, but these characters are well developed and Mak is hard not to love. Kick-ass with a sense of humor. But Moon...Oh. My. God. It's hard not to fantasize about this yummy man, crime syndicate or not. He's every woman's fantasy. Every rival's nightmare. Every cop's elusive arrest. Everyone has a dark side. And everyone, even villains, have redeeming qualities...
Or do they?
I won't spoil it.
You'll have to decide for yourself if love is worth crossing the line you can never uncross.
As for me? There's no question. And I'm so ready for Gomez's story in SIZZLE. Those gloves...ya know?
I received this as an ARC and knew I would enjoy it as I have her past books but it was better than I imagined. Just imagine that you know the world in black and white, you know right from wrong then all of a sudden you wake up and realize there are more than 50 shades of gray (without the kink). You have to make a choice put blinders back on or accept that what you thought of as right could just be a facade. That's the choice the heroine Mak has to make when she meets Moon. This book takes your heart on a journey that you have to follow from beginning to end. You truly become part of the story. It makes you wonder about what you would do. Awesome read.
Omg this book was amazing and it lived up to its name, I laughed I cried and I enjoyed it fro. start to finish. holly is an amazing author and she pulls you right in to the story she is telling and this time was no different I loved Mak and how she tried to fight her feelings even though she knew it was hopeless and then there was Moon who was just the best even though he is a criminal he is wonderful and caring to Mak, this is a must read for everyone. Thank you holly for another amazing book xxx
HEAT lives up to it's name! This is the first in a new series by Holly Roberts!!!!!! MAK, ex-cop, now a PI, and Moon, criminal (sort) make an absolute opposites attract couple! With her, Moon is tender, sweet, loving and MAK can't seem to shake her feelings! This masterfully written book! Humor, action, and, yes, some pretty hot sex!!!!! Excited to read the next!!!!!!!❤️❤️❤️ I received an ARC for a fair and honest review!
Ever have a book that you downloaded and then forget about and cant ever seem to want to read? Then you read it and go WTH? How did I miss this for so long?
When I started to read this I wasn't sure How to relate to the h...she seemed the quintessential girl...UGH Gag me. I like imperfections...I like the depth and usually perfect girls irritate me. Mak wasn't perfect in the long run. I actually thought I would get annoyed with her naiveté and her rosy outlook on crime and the criminal Justice system. Ms. Roberts surprised me. She took a pure white and black outlook and grayed it...I Applaud!!!!
Here is the quote that sealed the deal for me: " How can you fall in love with someone so completely that you're willing to leave all your principles behind?" Let hear it for messy inconvenient and HOT love!
Moon was an amazing Alpha read. I loved that he didn't hide himself from Mak and that he was unapologetic for what he did as a Crime boss and he wanted Mak to want him for himself. I loved that he went after her, but wasn't just physical for him. The end insight to his thoughts was a perfect cap on the story.
If you want a hot Alpha and a strong female who comes to the realization that lifes not always rosey. This is a book for you....Oh and the heat level...Well it is Phoenix in the summer!
The story of ex-cop turned PI Mak and crime lord Moon. Mak and Moon share an instant attraction to each other but he’s on the wrong side of the law. Mak holds off but ends up needing Moon’s help. The more the lines blur, the more Mak fights with her sense of what’s right and wrong.
How can you fall in love with someone so completely that you’re willing to leave all your principles behind?
Throw in a good dose of suspense and a lot of push/pull and you get a nice slow burn romantic suspense.
Moon is pretty bad as criminals go. This is not sugarcoated which I thought was good as it made him believable. His past and his kindness to certain people go a long way to redeeming his salubrious career path.
Mak is pretty straightlaced until her faith in the force gets her nearly killed. I liked her strength. I really got a sense of what it must be like to be a female police officer. This book was really well researched and believable. The author was a cop so it all makes sense.
I think I was just in the right mood for this book. I just enjoyed it. It was more suspense than heat but the hot bits were pretty good. I liked Moon’s badness and I liked Mak’s badassness. It did slightly annoy me that Mak always needed saving, but I get that it was part of the story.
You know how they tell you to never judge a book by its cover? Well yes and no. I started reading romance novels because I needed to research how to write a sex scene. Not a great one just a good one but I digress. Romance caters to a specific audience and normally it’s incredibly formulaic, most of all the cover. A romance cover normally shows a half-naked person in a state of lust and euphoria that is downright ridiculous. More ridiculous are the books where the covers don’t match the characters. A blond woman on the front and a brunette in the book. Come on, really?
In my mind, there was a long drawn-out argument over whether the cover should cater to the romance aspect or to the drama aspect. I see the romance version won and I understand why. That being said, this book is so much more than a romance novel. The love story is dark and commanding. The loss of naïveté and inexperience inevitable. The author clearly loves her city.
I don’t write reviews often because no one wants to hear my opinion. I say this only because I needed to write a review and I didn’t even care if anyone read it.
*I received this book free from the author in exchange for an honest review*
Madison Kinlock wanted nothing more than to be a police officer. A shoulder injury cut that dream short forcing her to turn in her badge after a few years. Now she is a private investigator dealing with mostly cheating scumbags. When one of her cases lands her in the wrong place at the wrong time and the guys take her in she has no idea where she is headed.
Moon is the head of a crime syndicate. When his guys bring Madison straight to him he is instantly drawn to her. There is nothing that Moon does not know about her. He knows that she is an ex-cop, very hardheaded and that she is capable of taking care of herself. He wants her so bad but has made a promise to protect her from her own danger.
Madison has no idea what she is in the middle of but this yummy looking man can make her stop in her tracks. She tries to talk herself into not getting involved but when Moon wants something he is sure to get it.
Oh, I really liked this book. The storyline is great, the passion is sizzling the pages. For being on opposite side of the law these two sure do know how to work together. That is once Madison realizes that she is in real danger.
I cannot wait to read the next book in the series!!
My Favorite Moment: I loved how Madison explained Moon’s name.
“Catch Xavier Moon. That’s Moon’s full name. I heard it in class but couldn’t remember. Chase the moon and catch the moon. His parents were romantics.”
My Favorite Moment: I love how Moon explains his career path to Madison. He stands for what he believes in no matter the cost.
“You don’t want those answers, Madison. Don’t ever think my kindness with you does anything but hide a dark, vicious heart. I live by a code that you will never understand, and I’ll die by that code.”
Heat by Holly S Roberts I was given this arc in exchange for an honest review.
Heat tells the story of ex cop and now PI Madison Abigail Kinlock (or Mak) and Mafia Kingpin Captar Moon (Moon). I was hooked from the opening chapter of Heat when Mak is confronting the soon to be ex husband of her client a cheat who likes to play rough with prostitutes. the rough play has brought him to the attention of Moon when he plays a little to rough with one of the lady's in his stable. Mak is caught in the fray between the love rat and Moons henchmen causing injury and thus begins this heated story.
Mak believes in black and white right and wrong there are no shades of grey when a career ending injury forced her retirement from the police making the choice to work as a PI which causes her to lose friends in the force. The rules she lived by helping her to make it through the loss of career and her legal system family. I loved the way Holly wrote Mak there were a few little niggles with her so righteous belief in right and wrong with how excepting she becomes in the end.
Moon is the enigma a good boy turned bad, turning to crime when cartels killed his family to mete out his own justice against the killers of his family he becomes a modern day Robin Hood with a little bit more bloodshed and prostitution in the mix. With Mak fighting her attraction to Moon this story is gritty and raw (HR does not shy away from the more gruesome aspects of the mafioso) her black and white world becomes a blend of greys.
A 5* read I will be on the lookout for more from Heat by Holly S Roberts is out 18th January 2016 and at an amazing £0.99p (price correct at time of review) and should not be missed. I will be adding Holly S Roberts to my TBR and hope to be reading Gomez's story soon.
I was given an ARC of this story for an honest review.
Great start to a new series, can't wait for more. It was obvious to me that this story was written by a former police officer. You can really feel what Mak is going through, from reminiscing about being a rookie cop out to save the world, to losing a job that defined her heart and soul, to the discovery that corruption hits closer to home than she could have ever imagined, Mak takes us along for the ride as she searches deep within her heart while she struggles to navigate a world that isn't black and white anymore but varying shades of gray.
How would your life change if true evil took from you the people who meant the most to you in your life. Would you sit back and wait for someone to bring the people responsible to justice, or go searching for justice yourself? Once you start down that slippery slope, how do you see yourself. Do you embrace the darkness and let it rule you? Or do you have a code of honor you live buy, even when you know most people will never take the time to see past the Criminal to the man of honor beneath? That's what Moon must decide and once he makes peace with his decision, how does love fit in that life he has chosen to live?
Come along for the ride and see if a retired Cop who still bleeds blue and a Criminal who has a code of ethics most people refuse to see can find common ground and see beneath the surface to the heart of the people they truly are meant to be.
Loved this story and can't wait for the next one, I'm hoping we will get to spend a lot more time with Gomez in the future
This was my first book by Holly S. Roberts, and I can say, without hesitation, I'm a fan! Madison Abigail Kinlock aka Mak, is an ex-cop turned PI after a career ending injury. Now her days consist of investigating cheating douche bags, but as she likes to eat, she has no choice. Moon controls Arizona's largest crime syndicate. Mak and Moon cross paths when both are trying to catch the same guy, and set sparks flying everywhere. She can't get over how absolutely hot he is, and he's decided he wants her. After Mak finds herself in danger, she must turn to Moon for help, as she can't trust the police. Will Mak be able to keep the blue eyed Moon at arms length the more time they spend together?
WOW! I LOVED LOVED LOVED this story so much! It started out with a bang, and I never caught my breath until I finished. The character development is great, with secondaries that I loved just as much. A fast paced, action packed, and very well written story line flows perfectly. Holly S. Roberts does a brilliant job in weaving layers of twists and turns that kept my heart racing, at warp speed, cover to cover. The well placed humor had me laughing until my sides hurt, and the sexy scene goodness is SCORCHIN' HOT! I'm very grateful that I had the opportunity to discover this talented author, and I CANNOT WAIT to read the next book in this Hotter than Hell series! HIGHLY HIGHLY HIGHLY RECOMMEND!
WOW! Don't miss this one. I mean it. I was given an ARC in exchange for an honest review, but I would have purchased the book anyway. This book grabbed me from the first page just like the first Holly S. Roberts book I happened on to (One Dom at a Time of the El Diablo Club Series). I'm not a blogger or professional reviewer, just a recreational reader, but I know my stuff...I proofread for a living. This author is one of the BEST I've ever read. HEAT will clearly be a top 2016 read. Like I said, she captures you from the first page and never lets go, all the way to the end. She develops believable characters that you feel are your friends by the time you're deep in the book. If you've ever wondered how a persons eye color changes with their moods, read this. If you've ever been faced with moral dilemmas, read this. If you like strong women and men who can be soft when the time is right, read this. I recommend this author all the time and this is no exception. You can get it on sale as a preorder and the release day, so act NOW. If you miss that, it's still way cheaper than a movie and it should be a movie, you will have hours of heart pounding enjoyment (with a few moments of "cover your eyes" scenes, but don't, it's all good, no great). Thanks Holly for another great read. I'll be rereading many times.
This is a fairly new author for me. I ran across another series by her a while back and completely enjoyed the one book I read in it. She became an author I made note of so I decided to come back for round two and I am so glad I did. Heat is the first book in a new series (and yes it is definitely a standalone) that will have your kindle steaming and you fingers flying across the pages.
This book was fantastic. Smart, sexy, suspenseful, intense, passionate with some laughs along the way, Roberts pulls you in from the first chapter of this fast romance. This book captivated me and before I realized it, I had to quit turning the pages because the book was over. This book definitely piqued my interest from the blurb but this book turned out to be so much more than that.
This is Mak and Moon's story. Two people who shouldn't want each other but they do. One is a criminal. One is an ex cop turned PI. And when their two worlds collide, it is going to break all of the rules. Mak is a woman you will find yourself rooting for. Moon is a man who will make you swoon and fall into the dark side. There is only one question... which side will you choose?
This is the perfect name for this book, Heat. Mak, an ex-cop by circumstances with a need to pay her bills, becomes a PI. She is tough, smart-mouthed but human based on the tears she sheds.
There is so much packed into this two hundred and forty page book; from Mexican cartels, drugs, guns, women of the night, violence, murder and sex. It is the convergence of all the evils in the world. Then there is love and Heat at first sight.
Written as though a narrative with the occasional conversation between the characters, it flows along and takes you on a journey of nerve wracking scenarios, humor and survival. Not a lot of fluff just details of thoughts, actions and emotion.
What really determines ‘good’ in this world more to the point can a criminal be a good person? Explore the possibilities by reading this book. I related to her style of talking, her inner struggles, her thought process and her courage in the face of so many different situations.
This, for me, was truly a good story, with characters that are real and constant excitement, on one level or another. The thing I enjoyed most was that it was a short read but it was packed with everything needed to be relatable!!
* I received this book from the author in return for a fair and honest review. * Holly Roberts! What more can I say??? I have read every one of Holly's books and expect a certain standard and I can say without doubt this surpassed even that. This is my favourite by far which I'm surprised to be saying because I was a bit hesitant about this. I mean the good guys are the good guys and the bad guys are the bad guys. What happens when good and bad mix?? EXPLOSIONS!!! That's what! I loved Madison's character, she's tough, sexy and sassy everything I like in a heroine. Moon is pure mystery, sexy, smart and bad to boot!! The book had its hooks into me from start to finish, the supporting characters where well written friend and foe alike, especially Gabriella (a special place in my heart for her). This book was an amazing read from start to finish and I can't wait for the next one. Thanks Holly for a great read.
Heat is a hot, dark romance about an ex -police officer. Madison is a private investigator, after being forced to retire from the police force due to injury her job prospects were slim. Being a cop was her dream job but a PI is just to pay the bills.
Her latest case has brought her to a dingy parking garage to catch a cheating husband with a hooker. She is able to get the pictures she needs but that isn’t the only trouble the dirty douche bag is in. Madison is sucked into the dark world of crime and his name is Moon. The problem is what if you start to like and crave the dark? Madison may just have gotten in over her head. This is dark and twisted. If that’s your kind of book this is definitely for you. I really enjoyed this book. The title is very fitting to this book. 4.5 stars out of 5.
This book is 99p for Amazon Kindle readers and is well worth the money.
*I received this book in exchange for an honest review*
The heroine is a judgmental cow!!! I hate to read her minds which keep looking down at the hero at the same time thinking about having sex with him all the time, also she accept his protection and happily lives in his mansion!!! Urgh...
Why is she looking down at him? Because she thought he is a criminal, eventho never been proved or caught and she is an EX cop! Yes ex, and what did she do now? Took pics of cheating hubs for the wives who want a divorce, yup amazing job!!
Madison need to ask some advice from Eve or Anya!!
Heat is such an apt word to describe this story! With humor dispersed throughout that make the characters so relatable to a love that's intensity scorches the pages. Both characters are willing to see life as it is and bend in ways that don't compromise their own ideals
I thoroughly enjoyed this book, the heroine became a little aggravating with her waffling but I over came it and a tiny bit of the Spanish could use some correction but other than that I thought it was a great story
Enjoyable story about an ex-cop and a crime lord in Arizona. Typical alpha couple with a ton of chemistry; likeable secondary characters and interesting backstory; dangerous moments and strong female characters are highlights. One downfall was how the MC's integrity changed over the course of the story, but it is what it is when you read stories with this kind of storyline.
