Continuing the story of Nikki and Eric, 'The Starkest Truth' delves further into the mind of a mad man. While 'The Sordid Promise' revealed Eric for the serial killer that he is, this book takes it a bit further, exploring his past and dissecting the events that made him into the man that Nikki both loves and fears.
Newly married, ghosts from Eric's past continue to try and create problems for the couple. Nikki has her fair share of doubts about her husband, and every time she turns around somebody else is adding more fuel to the fire. Eric's secrecy only makes her doubts multiply.
Nikki loves him, but knows that their love is unhealthy. Nothing brings this into perspective more than the discovery that she is pregnant. While Eric is ecstatic over the revelation, Nikki is terrified.
I continue to like this series, but there is something missing. The writing feels disjointed and at times confusing. More time spent transitioning between events would have been helpful, so that the story didn't jump from one to the next without any logical progression.
Overall, it continues to be an okay read for me. It has the potential to be a great, dark story, but needs some fine-tuning. I will be reading the third, and final, book next to see how this story concludes for Nikki and Eric.

Holy. Cow. I'm still trying to wrap my mind around this read after finishing and sleeping on it for one night. If anyone is capable of writing a story that sends your mind into doing cartwheels, it's definitely Courtney. At this rate, I want to know what's it like being inside her head and how she conjures up with plotlines that should be sending me running for the hills but yet I'm glued to the ground and begging for more.
The Starkest Truth is the continuation of the first one, The Sordid Promise and we delved further into the lives of Nikki and Eric post-marital. If you've read the first one already, you should know by now that these two are living far from the ideal fluffy cotton-candy romantic kind of a blissful marriage. Nope, this is NOT a romance story. Their relationship is a dysfunctional one, they're both damaged in their own ways but they're hooked onto each other like it's their drug.
Where do I even begin with this read? It's still as crazy and as insane as the first one. But if I really had to compare, I loved this one much more. Mainly because we finally got Eric's POV and oh boy, me finally being inside his head was like a kid who finally got her candy fix! It wasn't just about prying into his twisted, dirty mind (honestly my pervy self ain't complaining) or unravelling the ghosts of his past. Tapping into his psyche revealed another side of him that we've been all wondering about: was he actually capable of love?
But don't be fooled by the idea of getting dual POVs would give the story more clarity because if it's any indication of Courtney's brilliance, she just succeeded in making you doubt everything you THINK was going on in this read!! Between all the truths and the lies, there is just simply no way to tell them apart. Who's the good guy? Who's the bad guy? Are these people all insane? Or am I, the reader, is the one going insane?
I don't know how Courtney does it everytime but she has her wicked ways with planting seeds of doubt into your mind and trickle feeding you with half truths and half lies. Every time I thought I had it close to figuring it out, nothing is what it seems. The level of depth she puts into each character is done so intricately and keeps you second-guessing their motives. This is one book that constantly puts you on the edge and I loved it.
Completely unputdownable and addictive, this was an absolutely riveting read that toyed with my sanity and left me begging for more. After reading a couple books from this author, Courtney Lane surely makes it look like putting out a dark read is like a walk in the park for her. She does it like it's her second nature and every book of hers till date has still stumped me in all ways imaginable. Clearly this was no exception.
I will flat out just say this: This book surely isn't for everyone. There are themes in this book that many would find objectionable, the characters are those that you'll find difficult to grasp with and to simply put it, it's just all kinds of messed up. Again, this is a no romance read, it's a psychological thriller that really puts your sanity to the test. If none of that bothers you, by all means, this is a book not to be missed.

5 LOVED IT Stars!
This is the second book in The Breaking Insanity Series. You know the one that comes after The Sordid Promise. The one we all thought we were never going to get any more of. I was on cloud nine when I seen that CL was giving us more of Eric and Nikki! I loved it!!
TST starts off with Eric and Nikki married. Nikki is still fighting her issues with social anxiety and Eric is still trying to make her forget by fucking her. lol AND damn does he fuck her. Who needs to walk after sex? Not me and apparently not Nikki either. Haha!
There's not much I can tell you about this book. It's just as twisted as TSP was.
CL takes us back in time and we get to see more of how Eric came to be with Nikki. How Nikki's mom wanted Eric to protect her. We also go back in time and see what made Eric the way he is today. Eric's childhood was messed up and my heart broke for him.
Eric and Nikki's relationship is not unicorns and butterflies. They both had me saying..
I felt like I was in a tornado while I was reading. I couldn't help but feel bad for both Eric and Nikki.
You don't know who to trust, who's playing games. Im not even sure about Nikki anymore she once again had me screaming...
Eric is twisted as fuck! Everything he's known all is life is turned upside down because of Nikki. Everyone he associates with is...
If you think you are going to read this book and get answers from the last book you are sadly mistaken. This book takes you even deeper down the rabbit hole. You will be like me sitting over here chewing your nails waiting for the next book to come and praying you are going to get answers.
I want the next book now and I can't wait! I pray that it comes out on Dec 3rd like CL tells us at the end.

Nikki was weaker and more emotionally fragile in this book than she was in The Sordid Promise. She was still battling with addiction in this book as well as coming to terms with the death of her mother. While I enjoyed some of the drama that unfolded, most of it felt too contrived and the male lead character was very OTT. He made every woman he came into contact with cry or become tearful while in his presence. It was just too unbelievable for me and I became annoyed with him after a while.
Some of the writing was very choppy: in one scene the characters were at a restaurant, but then in the next sentence, they were at home. Also, this book was bursting at the seams with erotic scenes--almost to the point of being too much! Between the disjointed writing, the weak heroine, and Eric's hyped-up persona, this wasn't my favorite story. I liked the cliffhanger ending and will read the final book in this series.
Altogether, this was a fair read.

I have to be honest, I didn't connect with these characters in the first book. It had been so long since I read, I couldn't tell you why. Maybe I evolved as a reader, who knows. I just know, I was shocked, enraged, and hooked to Eric & Nicki after I finished. None of it mattered, this book was a pull of sick, depraved, and pure insanity. I loved it. I'm fast becoming Courtney Lane's biggest fan. This one was no different. She writes a Anti-Hero like no one I've read. There's that "Jack In The Box" effect when it comes to her stories. You know it's coming, but it still catches you off guard. Eric is unpredictable, dark, and crazy. I didn't know if I wanted to kill him or marry him. I have a better understanding of the characters, or at least I think I do. It seems we've just scratched the surface. I have a feeling the plot will thicken in book three, and leave us gasping.

Courtney Lane weaves a web, catches you, and you wait to be bitten by the spider. You want to be bitten by the spider.

★★★ 3 'NO TRUTH' STARS!
I'm addicted with this series. Couldn't put it down and need to know what's going on. Eric still has big question mark in my mind and Nikki is still trying so hard to believe him after all the secrets he kept. But, the closer their relationship, more truth revealed and threaten their life. In the opening Starkest Truth, Eric and Nikki already married for weeks.
** BEWARE! MAYBE CONTAINS SPOILER! **
✔ IMO, their marriage is dysfunctional. They're poison to each other. I don't know what they saw in each other. I marked their insta-love from the first book. I still couldn't hook with their chemistry except they're so twisted and fucked up. Nikki couldn't function without Eric. He's already become her medicine. Eric claimed love her no matter what. He still trying to 'fix' Nikki with her disorder and suicide tendency.
✔ When they're still trying to figure out their 'weird' marriage, Eric is trying to make her pregnant. Without her consent as his wife. Not only Nikki who surprise with Eric's compulsion, but I AM! Really?? I don't think bring baby into their messed up relationship and unstable emotion do any good? In the end Eric finally explain to Nikki (after some struggle to getting out his feeling and denying) that he still want a beautiful and normal family. Maybe he's trying to redeem himself? Because really, Eric has dreadful and disturbing past as a child.
✔ I don't expect to see more drama. But it isn't like a soap opera show. The conflict includes some people new and never mentioned in the previous book. I think there are some people with high power around Eric and Nikki. I don't know if they're good or bad either. It's like a big bad cartel/mafia family feud. What the hell Nikki's mother gotten into before her sickness? Still unanswered.
✔ Again, the sex is out of my comfort zone. It isn't only for feeding their needs, but mixed with angry lust and desperation. Their sexy times always rough, raw and intense as fuck. Mostly they use sex for avoiding conversation, question and feeling. Typical. But... I couldn't deny Eric's dirty mouth and pervert ways to fuck her ;D
Unfortunately, I hardly enjoy The Starkest Truth because some issues. Mostly around Eric and Nikki. They're still playing cat and mouse game with the truth. I didn't find any important truth in this book because never ending lies and deceit. Communication is the biggest problem here. My heart break along with Nikki. How Eric didn't handle his emotion well and choose not to 'digging deeper'. Honestly, Eric scared me at that times. He's become feral and aggressive. But another thing that surprise me is Eric remains faithful with Nikki and his marriage. The story told with 2 POV between Nikki and Eric. It's so great that I could see inside Eric's mind.

ERIC HAD A WAY of penetrating me in two ways; his words were a mental erection plunging deep inside the dark abyss contained within my mind. His body was a perfect and primed resource that could make me feel pleasure and pain when and however he wanted it. When he was inside me, my thoughts and desires were his. There was no end or divide between us—we were a singular entity.
✔ Again, the sex is out of my comfort zone. It isn't only for feeding their needs, but mixed with angry lust and desperation. Their sexy times always rough, raw and intense as fuck. I didn't find any important truth in this book because never ending lies and deceit. Communication is the biggest problem here. My heart break along with Nikki. How Eric didn't handle his emotion well and choose not to 'digging deeper'. Honestly, Eric scared me at that times. He's become feral and aggressive. But another thing that surprise me is Eric remains faithful with Nikki and his marriage. The story told with 2 POV between Nikki and Eric. It's so great that I could see inside Eric's mind.

It was Wickedly Complex, Twisted, Gritty and Dark!!
So many players this time around Eric and Nikki are basically the pawns...
Eric was hands down one of the cockiest most sadistic, manipulative, narcissistic SOB's
I've had the pleasure of reading about.. He's the type of Asshole you'll Hate to Love..
He'll have you creaming your panties while scaring you straight!
Eric was this beautiful demented man..
In The Sordid Promise he was untouchable, cunning and fearless..
We definitely got to see the Ethan side of him through his nightmares and what bits and pieces he fed Nikki of his damaged past..
He somehow managed to get snared in one of the many webs he's weaved - literally stuck
Oh what tangled webs we weave!!
That ending!!!
So much left unanswered, so many new players...
We were left with organized chaos..

*Insane book hangover! I apologize in advance for my ramblings and long review*

First and foremost, you must read Sordid Promise, book 1. Sordid Promise is a very sexy, very juicy prerequisite to TST. Sordid Promise sets beautifully the foundation of Eric and Nikki's delicious and dysfunctional relationship.
TST is an EPIC READ! I've loved Eric and Nikki from the beginning and they've yet to disappoint. In TNT we are rewarded with a deeper look into Eric's (formerly known as Ethan) psyche. Ethan, uh Eric, is a tortured soul. This guy endured unimaginable torture as a child at the hands of his family. He survived and repurposed his life and identity. In this story we are made to see what and how Eric considers and show love. We are given the opportunity to delve deeper into not only his life but his intricate and dysfunctional relationship with his wife Nikki, his uncle Victor (We learn ole uncle Vic is a mobster!!! One guess who is loosely affiliated with uncle Vic's uh team....), and last but not least, the cray crays of all time Preston, April, and Janet. Every can of whoop ass Eric opened on Preston is richly deserved! Dude has a warped soul! The emotion, the energy, and the mind fu*k Eric executes with each of the poor souls(yes even Nikki is privy to a gulp) will leave you utterly drained.
"I am your eternity and fu*k you are mine" Eric tells Nikki....damn that scene is soooooooooooo HOT! So beautifully dysfunctional! There are sections in this story you will highlight for leisurely consumption....this scene is definitely a scene for a splash of fluorescent pink and leisurely consumption! The sex scenes.....well let's just say every sex scene in the book is highlighted! E and his wife epitomize kink!
So in summary allow me to reiterate.....this is a dark novel! Nikki has severe mental issues(AGAIN read book one) and those issues are opened, revealed, and intricately documented throughout the story. Eric is a bad boy. An alpha male. A serial killer. Yes. A very talented serial killer. Eric in one word.....a beautiful tortured monster. Ok so yeah....Eric can't be described in one word.
Nikki is dark and has secrets..serious secrets. Eric is darker and the world revolves around him....literally. Their marriage is dark. Their sex life is darker. There is no HEA, thank goodness! First and foremost, you must read Sordid Promise, book 1. Sordid Promise is a very sexy, very juicy prerequisite to TST. Sordid Promise sets beautifully the foundation of Eric and Nikki's delicious and dysfunctional relationship.

When I heard Courtney was releasing a sequel to The Sordid Promise I was not so patiently waiting to get a copy.
Courtney has a way of writing that will pull in to the darkest depths possible.
This book has it all, darkness, twistedness, and mind numbing.
We continue on in Nikki's and Eric's world, after getting married you would think that things would be a little more plain sailing, well more plain sailing that could be in their world.
There are more issues revealed, definitely more twisted and dark events than you thought possible. The sizzling sex scenes make you think how did Courtney ever come up with scenes like this. Eric is as foul mouthed as ever, and we see more of why he is the way he is today. Nikki, has some sort of reliance on Eric, as he seems to bring her out of the world she was in before she met him.
the book is written in both character pov's and that is a better way of finding out what lies beneath each character.
This book is more twisted and dark than the previous, and I have a feeling that the next is going to be darker.
I love Courtney's books and I cannot wait for the next dark, twisted read she releases. She brings me into a world that is soul searching, dark and twisted.

This was the followup to A Sordid Promise which was a 5 star book in my opinion. This sequel however, didn't seem necessary and I was disappointed at the direction of the story. There seems to be a bigger conspiracy happening but the story is too convoluted. The h is also raped in this story and that should not have happened. I think the author added unnecessary drama. Plus, all the screaming and ranting by the h was a total turnoff, especially when she did it in front of people. They would be at each other's throats then kiss and make up. It was like a plane crash, train wreck, and bus accident all in one. I didn't like how the H was able to manipulate every woman he came across bc of his looks. Then he would brag about the size of his "thing" and how he could pleasure a woman with such skill. He did this too many times, I found myself rolling my eyes. I hope this couple finds a way to remain together so I'm off to read the last book.

Book two in The Breaking Insanity series. Unbelievable... this book was just as wickedly intense if not more than the first. I couldn’t put it down. It’s hard to put into words the the characters of Eric and Nikki and their crazy relationship. Many layers and characters with this story so it’s very easy to loose track, which I did but no worries I’m confident it will all make sense in the end. A well crafted, well written story. Loved it.

The boy won the girl despite the odds and now they should disappear into the sunset for their happily ever ever after but for Nikki and Eric things are never destined to be so normal. Continuing the mind mashing story of a manic depressive and a doctor of death what happens next when your addiction spirals out of control? Eric has become her drug of choice but throughout this story he callously subjects her to two extremes overdose and withdrawal with no respite. Eric has fallen victim to his own game as he too is addicted to his wife having made the mistake of actually feeling something for her. How can these two beautifully broken monsters exist with each other?
Told from a dual POV we also get a little insight into the journey of Ethan becoming Eric. Shedding a little light on the torments the boy survived and how he became the cold calculating master of manipulation he is today. His desire to own and control Nikki goes above and beyond all concepts of reason and yet his inner motivation is as pure and simple as it gets - love.
Nikki struggles with her relationship with Eric aware she is not living the truth and her dependency on him is unhealthy. Fueled by her own tragic experiences she wants full disclosure and to be able to be trusted by the man who claims to love her. Unfortunately for our slightly insane couple there are bigger plans for them and their unique talents, falling prey to the circling vultures that want to pull them apart.
This story ends shockingly, with no happy ever after in sight and honestly with no redemption possible for Eric either. He has sunk below the depths of despair and is currently residing in the darkest of lied of the human psyche. Nikki is left reeling, struggling to accept where she has ended up...
This is a cleverly, devilishly written story that leaves more questions unanswered and your mind spinning. I feel the deck is stacked and the winning hand is yet to be revealed. Who are the pawns in this game I think when the King is revealed I'll be surprised! More secrets, lies, smoke and mirrors...

I've been planning this review for days now and I'm still at a cross roads as to what to write. You know those books that when you finish, you just lay there and think WTF just happened??? Yea that was me. I knew what I had just read. I understood each and every word, I absorbed them, I cherished them and I analyzed them. BUT you must first understand Eric is THE master manipulator and Nikki is his perfect pawn or was she or was I?(yes I felt like I was there!) The writing in this novel is second to none and no one does this genre justice like this author. You will feel, yet you will doubt every emotion you have.
I do not want to give away anything so I will leave with you a note that if you love a dark, twisted, psychological thriller with an alpha male that will have you questioning your darkest desires and your own sanity this is a MUST read.
Eric and Nikki's story began in The Sordid Promise and to truly get the intensity of The Starkest Truth you will need to read it first. Once you finish The Starkest Truth you can join in my book hangover until the release of the final book in the series The Darkest Descension.

I just have no words for what a ride this book took me on. I thought after reading The Sordid Promise that things couldn't get more twisted for Nikki and Eric but boy was I wrong. So many more layers are revealed throughout this book and we're subjected to even more mind twisting chapters that by the end, leave us wanting, no NEEDING, more.
Nikki and Eric both come from messed up pasts and hold many secrets that neither can imagine. The sex scenes are off the charts hot and leave nothing to the imagination. Eric has to be my favorite character of Courtney's even though at times, he gives me reason to wonder why I love him so much. His dirty mouth is just so hot. It's understandable why Nikki can't help herself around him. There is no character like him in any of the books I've read. He's a twisted individual but so is Nikki from a different perspective. I enjoyed getting his POV in this book and a look more into his past. Poor Nikki, she just can't catch a break and every look into her mind makes you feel the exact emotion she is going through. If you want a dark, mind twisting read, this would definitely be a go to series.

OMG… Phenomenal… Absolutely phenomenal. This story had me on the edge of my seat, white knuckling the cushion, holding on for the most terrifying mind F%$#’s EVER and I LOVED IT!!!
I knew Eric was sinister when we first met him in The Sordid Promise but in The Starkest Truth you truly get to see that he is the most CALCULATING MANIACALLY MANIPULATING BASTARD you will ever meet. You will love him and hate him. Desire him and despise him all while holding your breath with each turning page.
Courtney Lane can excite your senses and bend your imagination to where she needs it to be. Every story she has written tends to pull you in, make you think and implores you to find the truth. I have enjoyed everything she’s ever written and cannot wait to see how this story ends. I’ve read other psychotic thrillers and this by far has to be one of the best!!!

My heart
Courtney did it again, yet my heart is breaking for both nikki and Eric. This has everything twists turns so very dark. Very well written. This had Eric's pov as well as nikkis, it was wonderful knowing what was going on in Eric's head. I am so obsessed with this story. Need book 3 to pull myself back together again hopefully.

The Starkest Truth, the follow up to The Sordid Promise, is dark, sexy, twisted, and absolutely captivating. Courtney Lane really outdid herself with this story. The Sordid Promise was up there as one of the most insanely twisted books I've ever read, and this book actually topped it.
Courtney Lane is a genius at delving into the human psyche. Her characters are so layered and so incredibly complicated. There are no one-dimensional characters in this story. You don’t quite know who to hate and who to root for, which is a testament to the author’s brilliance. Even the supporting characters have layers to them that you want to dig through. She does a fantastic job with the element of suspense, as you never know what is coming with Eric, Nikki, and the secondary characters around them.
I don't know whether to hate or love Eric more. He is seriously one of the most complicated and intense characters I've ever read. He is so twisted, manipulative, and a master and mind-fucking everyone around him. We didn’t get his perspective until the very end of The Sordid Promise, so I was so pleased that we got his POV throughout this book. While the storyline was unpredictable, one thing that was consistent was the crazy hot sex between Eric and Nikki. The sex scenes between him and Nikki were so incredibly intense, kinky, and steamy. The book ends with things hanging precariously in the balance for this couple. I have no idea where the author will take things with book 3, but I can't wait to find out.

Well I have to say this second book was well worth the wait I am really glad Courtney decided to release it.
Fantastically, written. The characters have a depth to them. Nice to get some parts of the background into Eric’s past.
Poor Nikki in this one her head is still so messed up she doesn’t know what is Truth and Lies anymore I don’t think she trusts anyone with what they say anymore.
Eric totally confused me in this one he seemed a bit all over the place I couldn’t make out if he believed what certain people where telling him. But i suppose you plant the Doubt there it does play in you mind.

5 twisted stars!!! I couldn’t put this book down, it sucks you in and takes you on a psychological joyride!!!
Book two picks up where book one left off. Nikki and Eric are now married and trying to move along that way. And just like the first book, this book takes you on another crazy @ss ride of epic proportions. Eric is still the foul mouthed, dominant man as he was in the first, maybe a little more dirtier though. More secrets and lies come to the surface, which of course causes more turmoil in their marriage.
I think Courtney Lane is fast becoming one of my favorite authors!! I’m a huge dark romance fan and she knows how to write a good dark romance!! It’s sexy, disturbing and so twisted. Can’t wait to see what happens next.

The love story continues with book 2. The chaos of all the emotions from this read is mind blowing. As Eric is there for Nikki to help her through the death of her Mom and how she came to pass. Now with a baby on the way, these two must accept their feelings about the pregnancy, their future and where this road is going to take them.
Eric is on cloud nine with the news of being a father. His world will need more control now to keep Nikki and the baby safe. When the past shows up, this puts Eric into a spiral of emotional hell.
Nikki is stressed, she is scared of what is going to happen to this baby, with her mental weakness, she doesn't feel she can be a good mother and doesn't want to bring a baby into their life, their chaos, their instability.
The unease with Eric and Nikki takes it's toll on their relationship. Both fighting for and against each other. Their emotional vulnerability that peaks it's head up, puts these two in a whirl wind of hurt feelings, betrayal, assumptions and the controlled chaos finally erupts with both fighting to survive.

Wow!! I just finished and I am at a loss for words! Loved it! This was one of the most insanely hot, intensive, gripping reads since The Sordid Promise. Courtney had definitely outdone herself with this sequel.
Just when I thought I could finally see a redeeming side of Eric, he destroys it . I didn't think it was possible, but he's even more ruthless, deceitful, and manipulate than before. Nikki has to take the full brunt of his deviant ways, all the while fighting her own demons.
" Women always came to me with a mask of sanity. When I was done with them, the mask was torn away, showing the disfigured, insane ugliness hidden behind pretty faces and false overconfidence."
"... when no one else sees the monster you see, they are going to paint you as crazy."
" Thing is, I can’t let you go. Neither side can. Don’t know what the fuck to do about that.”
We also get to see more of Victor and Preston, and learn their roles in this sordid game they all seem to be playing.
I'm on pins and needles waiting for the conclusion of this amazing series!

I have been waiting for this sequel for a long time and let me just say that it did not disappoint! Was it hard to read at times? Yes. Did my heart break for Nikki? Yes. Did it break for Eric? Absolutely. If you have read the first book that last answer may surprise you, but traveling into Eric's past was hard. It shed some light on how he became the man he is today. The man who equal parts want to protect and hurt Nikki. This is not an easy journey and in the end I'm still trying to sift out through all the secrets and lies. Eric is no hero and Nikki is no heroine, they both have demons to fight and do things that will piss you off. I am just hopeful that in the next book Ms. Courtney puts a little of my heart back together again.

Courtney Lane once again shows why she is the QUEEN of twisted romances! The Sordid Promise is my favorite book of Courtney's and I was so excited when I found out this would be a trilogy. I loved the The Starkest Truth. I loved that we got both Eric and Nikki's POV. I loved that we got to know more about Eric's past. As you can see I just loved this book. I have absolutely no idea where this story is gonna go but I can't wait to find out. Bravo Courtney on another roller coaster ride of a book. I'm addicted and I want more!
