Clay Jacobs and Evie Meyers are on the run. Together. Being hunted is almost worth it, so long as that remains true. It’s too much to hope that it can last.
Only weeks after their reunion in Salem, his family strikes, and Clay is torn from his lover’s arms once again. Alone, his certainty in their love falters. Everything he thought was true is called into question. Could his family be right? Could he have been caught in Evie’s spell?
Clay’s obsession with finding the truth leads him on a hunt across the globe. The answer will either bring him closer to freedom or destroy the remnants of his shattered heart. His quest may prove more difficult than he imagines when some people will go to any lengths to keep the truth hidden.
Purveyor of words. Creator of worlds. Destroyer of feels.
Once upon a time, Michelle worked in a dreary office with only the voices in her head for company. Now, the voices in her head are characters on the page who will break your heart, lift your spirit, and make you feel like you have found new friends.
With the way book 1 'Besieged by Rain' ended, then book 2 of Evie's series "Daughter of Fire" ended, I couldn't wait to start book 2 'Among the Debris'. But then a phone update had me unable to read anything for over 24 hours, it was pure torture, so this morning, once I knew everything was working again I started reading 'Among the Debris' & was instantly enthralled! Being captured in the events surrounding Clay's life away from Evie as well as with Evie. 'Among the Debris' is book 2 in Michelle's "Son of Rain" series, please definitely read book 1 of the series first, or better yet read the books alternating starting with book 1 of the "Daughter of Fire" series. This is a companion series, Evies POV is in the "Daughter of Fire" series & Clay's POV is in this series, both series intertwine in the breifest moments, their journey's to one-another are so different that when they do get together it's done so you don't feel like your reading the same thing. It's pure bliss!
Leaving off where 'Besieged by Rain' finished, Clay & Evie are on the run from Clay's family, whom eventually catch up to them & then the unthinkable happens, Clay & Evie are seperated again. Dealing with a death & then Evie's leaving, Clay is left feeling responsible, devastated & fearful. Then a question, is his love for Evie true or a spell, has him on the mission of his life & see's him travelling all over Europe to find the answers he so desperately needs.
I really didn't want this book to end, Clay's mission kept me enthralled, his ups & down's, his questioning everything he'd grown up knowing, then the magical creatures he encounters when in Europe, also the ancient laws & stories he finds.... JUST WOW! What a journey Clay goes on, mostly staying out of contact with his family or the Rain. I couldn't put my ereader down even if I tried!! I felt like I was inside the story!
I absolutely FLOVED this installment in Clay's story, I can't wait for the next book not only in this the "Son of Rain" series, but in Evie's story "Daughter of Fire" series.
*I received an ARC in exchange for an honest review* ...but who am I kidding? I asked for it because I didn't want to wait for release day to read it.
This is a particularly complex story - even more so, as it's half of the events told from Clay's perspective, when I've already read Evie's account of these events in Rise From Ash.
It's not repetitive - Clay's story involved adventures that are distinctly different from Evie's, as his conflict is with his family and his own better judgement as events unfold.
This book is very hard to review without giving spoilers!
Perfectly paced, I felt Clay's internal conflict throughout his quest for answers...which are neither simple or easy to decipher. Such is the complexity of the mythology that binds both him and Evie.
Among the Debris is book 2 in the Son of Rain Series and is a companion series that runs parallel to the Daughter of Fire Series. The Daughter of Fire Series follows Evie Meyers, a not so normal girl, whereas the Son of Rain series follows Clay Jacobs, a soldier of 'The Rain' who is tasked with ridding the earth of anything that is not 100% human.
When I first learnt that there were going to be two series' running parallel, I was a bit sceptical. I was thinking that I was going to be reading the same story from two different POV's but these books are nothing like that. Yes, at points the books overlap but its rare and far between and when they do overlap, its done in such a way that its not like reading something you have already read.
I have really enjoyed both series but I would say that so far, Clay's books have been my favourite... I just love being inside his head.
Among the Debris picks up where Besieged by Rain ends and has us with a united Clay and Evie but with Clay's family on the hunt the pair are doomed. When the unthinkable happens, Evie flees and Clay is left devastated and fearful for Evie's life.
Questioning the love he feels for Evie, Clay embarks on a dangerous journey, determined to find out more about the woman who has stolen his heart. This is where the really fun stuff starts... travelling around Europe, Clay finds himself in London (big up my home town!) with a single objective in mind... recover the missing information about Evie's existence.
Of course, being a member of 'The Rain', Clay has much more to do than just recovering the information... he find himself battling a 'Black Annis' and a 'Boo Hag', forging new friendships with his London counterparts and hiding from his family.
Will Clay succeed in his mission? and what if the information he finds is not exactly what he wanted to find?
I absolutely loved this book! From the moment I started reading it I was sucked in and was unable to put it down. One of the things I love most about Michelle's books is that she is so descriptive with her 'creatures' that I can picture them clearly in my mind... that 'Boo Hag' *shudder!*
I also really enjoyed the introduction of 'Toni'... that girl is the shit and I could see her getting on really well with another 'Rain' operative (wink wink, nudge nudge lol).
Clay and Evie are finally reunited, but their reunion is short lived when Clay’s family tracks them down and tears them apart again. This time it’s Evie who’s running, leaving Clay alone, miserable and confused as to why she ran. Despite his conflicting emotions, he remains disenchanted with his family and the Rain and wants nothing to do with any of them. But he still needs information, so he convinces his family that he needs to get away to re-evaluate his life. They let him leave the country to work in their offices in England, which gives him free reign to track down a woman mentioned in Evie’s file and hopefully find the truth about the Phoenix/Sunbird.
While Clay’s family is constantly pointing out all the ways he has betrayed them, I suspect their betrayal goes way deeper-so deep and unimaginable that he can’t see it even though it’s staring him in the face. And if I’m right and when Clay finds out, I don’t know how he’ll ever be able to forgive them. At this point in time, I think Ethan is the only family member who has the potential to redeem himself. We meet Toni, the daughter of the Rain’s Oxford leader, who shares Clay’s belief that not all Others are evil and should be killed on sight. She has a dry sense of humour that was fun to read and gave Clay a reason to smile again. With her help, he’s able to retrieve the artefacts he needs to learn more about Evie’s heritage-artefacts that are hidden by the Rain in order to prevent their operatives from knowing the truth.
AMONG THE DEBRIS continues on from BESIEGED BY RAIN and runs almost parallel to RISE FROM ASH, book 2 in the Daughter Of Fire series. The Daughter Of Fire series is told in Evie’s POV, while the Son Of Rain series is told in Clay’s POV. Clay’s books don’t end at the exact moment that Evie’s books do, and I think it’s because of this I was a bit thrown by the timeline. It was easy with the first two books, but now we’re four books in so it took me a little while to get back on track as to what happened to who and in what book. But other than that, AMONG THE DEBRIS is another great read in both series. It’s so heartbreaking to see a couple that are destined to be together, yet they’re torn apart because others are so blinded by hate.
I was given this book in turn for an honest review.
Clay and Evie reunite; only for Clay's family to rip them apart, again! With his mind unable to find peace, Clay sets out to find the truth about Evie and her existence. Will the truth tear them apart or give Clay renewed reason to fight for the woman he loves?
Michelle Irwin blew me away with Among the Debris; she has an outstanding talent of writing a story from another POV, whilst keeping the reader captivated and giving the story a new approach for the reader to understand the world in which Clay and Evie live in. I have a renewed love for Clay Jacobs. This young man is willing to fight to the ends of the earth for Evie to live a 'normal' life; or he will die trying. If you have read the first two books of Evie's story, this book will give you an insight into the agony and heartache Clay faced in his time apart from Evie. After the fire, their time apart was much harder and mentally draining for Clay; his father shows his true colours and the lengths to which he will go for Clay to obey him.
Clay's circle of trust is limited; he has to put his life at risk time after time to gain knowledge about the Sunbird and discover who the Rain really are. We are introduced to new characters in this book and I hope to see one of Clay's allies again; she challenged and supported Clay when he needed it and she also had a great personality; their moments together gave the story a little light heartedness, breaking up the moments of despair and seriousness.
I loved this second book in the Rain series and I can't wait to read more from Evie and Clay; their adventure is far from over, with more secrets waiting to be discovered.
I recommend reading the first two books in the Daughter of Fire series and the first book in the Rain series before reading Among the Debris.
If you love paranormal romances, with suspense, action and twists, you will absolutely love the Daughter of Fire series and Rain series by Michelle Irwin.
There may be a few spoilers in my review so if you haven’t read the first two books in the Daughter of Fire series or the first book in the Son of Rain series, stop reading now. I don’t want to spoil them for you. Evie and Clay are still in love, but they’re also on the run. But they’re not trying to escape supernatural creatures that may do them harm. They’re trying to escape Clay’s family who want Evie dead or, worse still, they want to torture her before killing her. Now I will admit there are a few times I’ve thought of dropping these series. I couldn’t handle reading about all they had to endure in the name of love, but as soon as I pick up the next book I’m sucked in again. Not only do I want to find the answers to my questions, I want Evie and Clay to be able to live together like two ‘people’ in love should. But will their many differences and Clay’s family keep them apart? I don’t know, but I’ll keep reading until they find their HEA. I really hope they do. I gave Among the Debris 4 and a half stars. I took off half a star simply because I’m feel this story is starting to drag a bit and I want it to move forward faster. Written by Karen from A Thousand Lives Book Blog

This is the 2nd book in the Son of Rain series and Clay having lost Evie again goes in search of her nature. Once again Michelle Irwin takes you on a tale of love and adventure from Clay's point of view. Meet a whole new set of Rain operatives and those pesky "others" that need to be disposed of, all the while searching for information about the love of his life, Evie. This is a paranormal meets Romeo & Juliet story.
Another outside of my norm reading and let's just say this book is well worth it! Even though it's more paranormal type of read it still has the mystery feel to it as well! If you haven't yet, this is the time to snatch up this book and read it!
*** Gifted by the publisher for an honest review ***
This series is a companion series of Michelle Irwin's The Through the Fire which was the first to come out really intrigued me, with the premise of a Phoenix Supe, and the boy who has been brought up to kill all Supe's who falls in love with Evie, the Phoenix.
Its best to read them alternating, they follow the same story-line told in each of the characters POV, but they are not particularly repetitive because other than the times that the couple are together, the star crossed lovers are apart for most of the books.
I read this book after reading Rise from Ash and this book really delves deeper into the quest to find out more about Evie's Supe heritage. I found it fascinating, and I would often go off and check out the findings on the internet.
Michelle Irwin has done a lot of research into the myth of the Phoenix, and this is something I love about her books. These 2 series have really got me interested to where Michelle will lead our pair next.
It was nice to see Evie and Clay's brief stint at a somewhat normal life, and afterwards to see the guilt and despair he felt when Evie is hurt and then on the run.
Clay really has to go deep off the grid to escape the Rain's radar on his quest to find out if the love he feels for Evie is real or a 'spell' that 'freak' has cast on him as his family insist.
Will Clay's search give him the answers he needs, or will he get lost in the despair and misery of doubting the love between them is real.
The story takes Clay to Europe and England, and has Clay finding unlikely allies to help him on his quest. Of course there are a few monsters to keep us on our toes too, which gives us a great PNR Read that leads us back to where Rise from Ash left us.
I can't wait for Evie's next book to find out what the reunited lovers will do next.
Among The Debris, by Michelle Irwin, is my one hundred and fifty - eighth book that I have received and read from Goodreads. This is my first book that I have read from this author. I will be getting the first book in this series. The story starts out with Clay Jacobs and Evie Meyers on the run from Clays family. Evie and Clay are in love and all they want is to be happy togeather. Their reunion is short lived when Clays family tracks them down and tears them apart again. Evie is on the run again by herself. Clay sets out to find the truth about Evie and her existence. The truth will either tear them apart, or it will give Clay renewed reason to fight and stay with Evie. Clay has a very limited amount of people he can trust especially in his family. He has to put his life at risk unlimited number of times to gain the knowledge about Evies family, the Sunbird, and discover who his family the Rain really are. Clay is put at odds with his father. Clays father shows the lengths he will go to keep Clay and Evie from being together. I really enjoyed reading this book and will be getting the first book in this series. I will be reading more from this author. I would recommend this book to all teens and older. I would like to thank Goodreads and the author Michelle Irwin for the chance to read this book.
I always LOVE reading about what Clay is up to after Evie's depressing journeys. I love how these series intertwine, but what an abrupt end! I know what happens next, but I want more from Clay's POV. Since Clay is part of the Rain I'm always curious to see what adventure or creature will come along next. And I was not disappointed. I loved the Boo Hag with arthmomania, I also loved Toni! I hope to hear more from her in the next books, and the Fae. What is Evie's ex fae lover up to these days?
''Silly, Evie.'' I couldn't believe the stupidity of us both-we'd lost so many months of potential happiness because we'd been so scared of the doubt the other harbored.' Finally! Clay says what I've been thinking this entire time. Bad timing and communication. One day they'll get it right.
I love these book and I can't wait for the rest. PS. Every time I read about the Oubliette's I giggled because it makes me think of The Labyrinth. :)
After losing each other again, Clay and Evie come together in Salem at a witches convention. Rain is there to “save” the world of non-humans and kill innocent women. Clay loves Evie but when he is with his family again he questions Evie. Did she bewitch him? Could his family have been right all along?
In order to find the truth of his obsession he searches around the world to prove he was being lied to from his girl or his family. It is a journey to find Evie’s true nature but it seems getting answers is not going to be easy. He convinces his family and the rain that he needs to time away to get his head back in the game. He is allowed to leave the country and goes to England to find a woman in Evie’s file that may know more about the Phoenix and the Songbird.
It is amazing how much I have learned about the mythology surrounding Evie and others from this book. Michelle Irwin has me emotional and wanting to see Clay and Evie succeed. It is heartbreaking to think that these two keep being torn apart. The romeo and Juliet influences are not lost on this reader. It is amazing how reading these books have added such dimension to the series. I love how the books overlap but are not very redundant. I love how Clay has such inner turmoils. The characters are real and complex. I fell in love with Clay in book one with the dates and now with his protective nature I am smitten even more. While this book could be read without reading the Daughter of Fire series, it would be beneficial to the deeper knowledge the books are conveying.
