Called in for a supernatural-crimes case, Buffy and Spike discover an incubus demon is targeting women in San Francisco. Meanwhile, Xander and Giles work on an exorcism that stirs up some questions about Ghost Anya.
Buffy the Vampire Slayer: Triggers is Issue Twenty of Season Ten. Buffy and Spike are called away from their usual business to do… well… their usual business. There is a demon that is attacking women in San Francisco that needs taking care of, Buffy and Spike are the perfect candidates to do so. This leaves Xander and Giles alone though, working on an exorcism. Which would be all well and dandy, except for the fact that Xander has been hiding some things from the group that an exorcism might bring to light. Once this exorcism is completed however, Xander is left with more questions than answers about the things he is hiding.
As stated in my last review for Buffy the Vampire Slayer Season Ten, sometimes side issues can be wonderful, little burst of joy for the nerd in us all. That was not the case for me in this side issues. Having just come off Issue Nineteen, Freaky Giles Day, the last thing I was looking forward to was another side mission that had little to do with the actual plot. The story that the writers were trying to tell was amazing on it own, but I kept on thinking to myself while reading, when are we going to get to all the good stuff? I preferred this Xander and Giles plot to the Buffy and Spike plot, but I found myself scratching my head as to why either of these issues in the group were being brought up at this time in the season.
Buffy and Spike have always had their issues, I don’t think that is something that is ever going to change, and quite frankly I don’t want it to. Their issues that they have as a couple and even when they are not a couple are human and that is what their plot line in this side issue deals with. Yes, there is a demon and yes, they do successfully hunt the demon but at the end of the day they exercise their own demons while killing the real ones. It is what makes them so great. I did love this story that was being told for Buffy and Spike in this issue, but I felt like it is one that readers and viewers of the show have seen repeatedly with this two. While I still enjoyed it, it was lack luster for me. I was hoping for something more.
Then we come to Xander and Giles, aka the reason that this issue even got four stars. Xander and I go through our ups and downs, sometimes I love him and sometimes I hate him. Throughout Season Ten he has been visiting by a ghost of a loved one. The loved was looks, talks, and acts like the person that Xander knew but there is something off about them, something that Xander quite put his finger on. This is put to the test when Xander and Giles perform and exorcism. I loved this plot and I loved what the writers did with it. Xander is a character who often, is heavily influenced by his emotions, they are what drives his decisions and choices that he makes. For something to play on that is perfect for the character of Xander. When all is said and done Xander has some choices to make and this left me dying to know what was going to happen and what choices he would make regarding the ghost and his own morals.
Buffy the Vampire Slayer always has a special place in my heart and I ended up giving this comic book four out of five stars. While I did have issues with their being another filler comic after readers just received one, I found the stories that they were telling to be fun and interesting. Sometimes fillers need to happen to tell the full story and it just so happened that there were two back to back in this season. I recommend this comic to anyone who has been keeping up to date with Buffy the Vampire Slayer Season Ten.
I am totally hooked on the comics now. Every sighting of Spike makes me happy, and when there is continuity and exploration of unresolved issues from canon, I'm even happier. Really getting into the story and looking forward to the next issue.
I liked the reveal that ghost Anya isn't really Anya, and of course the cats. But I really think they handled the elephant in the room with Buffy and Spike's relationship well, like they handled Buffy's pregnancy before it went all robot stupid. Looking forward to how season ten will end!
