I devoured this book.
It centers on Charlie, a daring aviator in World War 2. As the war is ending, he discovers an angel trapped and injured on the grounds of a military hospital. Charlie rescues the angel and before long the two develop a relationship. Meanwhile a hospital nurse, Evvie starts looking into the mysterious occurrences at the hospital.
This book is just as smartly written as anything else by Alice Degan/AJ Demas. The characters are fully fledged and the world immersive. She’s doing a delicate dance here because you know that angels=good, devils=bad, but she manages to maintain tension and interest regardless.
This book is heavier on the metaphysical than the last, so it may not be for all readers. I recommend it for those who like high angst queer romance.

This book is a little bit like catnip for me - metaphysics, pastoral figures in fantasy novels, romance, and written by AJ Demas under her real name. It was so good and also fascinating because this book absolutely makes an argument about both good and religion and one of the places where it comes down pretty hard is that belief/a calling/God CAN make you better if you let it use you rather than (just) using it.
And also Degan has noticed what much manga has noticed - the aesthetics of Christian theology make for epic set dressing if you are not particularly interested in battling out the different theological claims of different sects. (The question of the correct amount of sex and sects in a given novel is, of course, purely subjective.)

Honored to be the second review of this book on Goodreads! This is the best kind of sequel— where there’s immense payoff in knowing book l but the ideas and new characters are strong enough to be satisfying on their own.
